Getting star ted 8 The microphone a t the top of the device is active only when y ou use the speakerphone or take videos. • Do not cov er the antenna ar ea with your hands or other objects. This may cause connectivity problems or drain the battery .

Getting star ted 10 Installing the SIM or USIM card and batt er y Inser t the SIM or USIM card provided b y the mobile telephone ser vice provider , and the included battery . • Only microSIM car ds work with the device . • Some L TE ser vices may not be available depending on the service provider .
Getting star ted 11 3 Push the SIM or USIM car d into the slot until it locks in place . • Do not remov e the protective tape cov ering the antenna, as this can damage the antenna.
Getting star ted 12 Removing the SIM or USIM car d and battery 1 Remove the back c over . 2 Pull out the ba tter y . 3 Pull out the SIM or USIM car d. T o r emove the SIM or USIM car d, inser t a finger tip into the hole and push the SIM or USIM card out of the slot, as sho wn in the image below .
Getting star ted 13 Char ging the ba tter y Use the charger t o charge the battery before using it f or the first time. A computer can be also used to charge the devic e by connecting them via the USB cable. Use only Samsung-appro ved chargers , batteries, and cables.
Getting star ted 14 • The device can be used while it is char ging , but it may take longer to fully char ge the battery . • If the device receiv es an unstable power supply while charging , the touch screen may not function. If this happens, unplug the charger from the devic e.
Getting star ted 15 Reducing the batter y c onsumption Y our device provides options that help y ou save ba tter y pow er . By customising these options and deactivating featur es in the background, y ou can use the device longer between charges: • When you ar e not using the device, switch to sleep mode b y pressing the P ower butt on.
Getting star ted 16 1 Remove the back c over . 2 Inser t a memor y card with the gold- colour ed contacts facing downw ards . 3 Push the memory card into the slot. 4 Replace the back cov er . Removing the memor y card Befor e removing the memory card, first unmount it f or safe remo val.
Getting star ted 17 F ormatting the memor y card A memor y card f or matted on a c omputer may not be c ompatible with the device . F ormat the memor y card on the device . On the Home screen, tap Apps → Settings → Mo re → Stor age → F ormat SD card → F ormat SD card → Erase ev er ything .
Getting star ted 18 Holding the devic e Do not cov er the antenna ar ea with your hands or other objects. This may cause connectivity problems or drain the ba tter y . L ock ing and unlock ing the devic e When not in use, lock the devic e to prevent un wanted operation.
19 Basics Indicator ic ons The icons displa yed at the t op of the screen pr ovide inf ormation about the status of the device . The icons list ed in the table below are most c ommon.

Basics 21 F inger gestures T apping T o open an application, t o select a menu item, to press an on-scr een button, or to ent er a character using the on-screen keyboar d, tap it with a finger . Dragging T o mov e an icon, thumbnail, or preview t o a new location, tap and hold it and drag it to the target position.
Basics 22 Double -tapping Double -tap on a webpage, map , or image to zoom in a part. Double -tap again to return. F licking Flick left or right on the Home screen or the A pplications screen t o see another panel. F lick up or down to scr oll through a webpage or a list, such as contacts.
Basics 23 C ontrol motions Simple motions allow easy contr ol of the device. Befor e using motions, make sur e the motion featur e is ac tivated . On the Home screen, tap Apps → Settings → My device → Motions and gestures → Motion , and then drag the Motion switch to the right.
Basics 24 Picking up When you pick up the devic e after it has been idle for some time or when the scr een has turned off , it vibrates if you ha ve missed calls or new messages. Holding to ear While viewing call, message , or contact details, pick up and hold the device to y our ear to make a call.
Basics 25 P anning to mov e T ap and hold an item, and then mov e the device to the left or right to move the item t o another panel on the Home screen or the Applications scr een. P anning to bro wse When an image is zoomed in, tap and hold a point on the scr een, and then move the device in any dir ec tion to bro wse the image.
Basics 26 T urning o ver T ur n ov er the device to mut e ringtone or pause media playback. T ilting T ap and hold two points on the scr een, and then tilt the device back and forth to zoom in or out.
Basics 27 P alm motions Use palm motions to c ontrol the device b y touching the screen. Befor e using motions, make sur e the palm motion featur e is ac tivated . On the Home screen, tap Apps → Settings → My device → Motions and gestures → P alm motion , and then drag the P alm motion switch to the right.
Basics 28 Air V iew On the Home screen, tap Apps → Settings → My device → Air view , and then drag the Air view switch to the right. P oint at an item with your finger to pr eview the content or view inf ormation in a pop-up window . When you poin t at an area on a w ebpage for a few seconds , the device magnifies the area.
Basics 29 A c tiva ting Multi W indow Use this f eature t o run two applications on the screen at the same time . • Only applications on the Multi Windo w panel can run. • When launching applications that c ontain multimedia files, such as music or videos, sound fr om both files will be play ed.
Basics 30 Using Multi W indow applications While using Multi Windo w applications, tap or and use one of the follo wing: • : Switch loca tions between Multi Window applica tions. • : Maximise the window to fit the screen. • : Close the application.
Basics 31 • P ower saving : Activate or deactivate po wer-sa ving mode. • Screen Mirroring : Activate or deactivate the scr een mir roring f eature. • Multi window : Set to use Multi Window . • W i-Fi hotspot : Activate or deactivate the Wi-F i tethering featur e.
Basics 32 Adding an it em Cust omise the Home screen by adding widgets , folders, or pages . T ap and hold the empty area on the Home screen, and then select one of the follo wing categories: • Apps and widgets : Add widgets or applications t o the Home screen.
Basics 33 Setting wallpaper Set an image or photo stored in the devic e as wallpaper for the Home screen. On the Home screen, tap → Set wallpaper → Home screen , and then select one of the follo wing: • Galler y : See photos taken by the device ’ s camera or images do wnloaded from the Internet.
Basics 34 L ocked scr een The locked screen pr events the device fr om unwan ted operation when not in use and also allows y ou to add conv enient widgets. A dding widgets T o use widgets when the scr een is locked, on the Applications scr een, tap Settings → My device → Lock scr een , and then tick Multiple widgets .
Basics 35 U sing applications This device can run man y different types of applications , ranging fr om media to Internet applications. Opening an application On the Home screen or the Applications scr een, selec t an application icon to open it .
Basics 36 Organising with f olders Put r elated applications together in a f older for con venience . T ap → Edit , tap and hold an application, and then drag it to Crea te folder . Enter a f older name and then tap OK . Put applica tions into the new f older by dragg ing, and then tap S ave to sav e the ar rangement.
Basics 37 Ent ering te x t Use the Samsung keyboard or the v oice input feature t o enter text. T ext entr y is not suppor ted in some languages . T o ent er text, you must change the input language to one of the suppor ted languages .
Basics 38 Changing the ke yboard type T ap and hold , and then tap t o change the keyboard type. T ap and hold and move the floating keyboard t o another location. T o switch t o the fixed keyboard , tap . Changing language ke yboards Add languages t o the keyboard, and then slide the spac e key lef t or right to change language keyboards .
Basics 39 C opying and pasting T ap and hold ov er text, drag or to select more or less text, and then tap Cop y to cop y or Cut to cut. The selected text is copied to the clipboard. T o paste it in to a text entr y field, tap and hold a t the point where it should be inserted, and then tap P aste .
Basics 40 A dding W i-F i netw orks If the desired network does not appear in the networks list, tap Add W i-F i net work at the bottom of the networks list. Enter the network name in Network SSID , select the securit y type and enter the passwor d if it is not an open network, and then tap Connect .
Basics 41 T ransf erring files Move audio , video , image, or other types of files from the devic e to the computer , or vice versa. The f ollowing file f ormats are supported by some applications. Some file f ormats are not suppor ted depending on the version of the devic e’ s sof tware or the computer operating syst em.
Basics 42 C onnec ting as a media device 1 Connect the device to the comput er using the USB cable. 2 Open the notifications panel, and then tap Connected as a media devic e → Media device (M TP) . T ap Camer a (PTP) if your comput er does not suppor t M edia T ransfer P rotoc ol (MTP) or not hav e any appr opriate driver installed .
Basics 43 Setting a pattern On the Applications screen, tap Settings → My device → Lock scr een → Screen lock → P attern . Draw a patt er n by connecting four dots or mor e, and then draw the patt er n again to v erify it. Set a backup unlock PIN to unlock the screen when you f orget the pattern.
Basics 44 Unlock ing the devic e T ur n on the screen b y pressing the P ower butt on or the Home button, and enter the unlock code . If the unlock code is forgott en, take the device to a Samsung Ser vice Centre t o reset it. Upgr ading the device The device can be upg raded to the lat est soft ware .
45 C ommunication Phone Use this application to make or answ er a call. T ap Phone on the Applications screen. Mak ing calls Mak ing a call Use one of the f ollowing methods: • Keypad : Enter the number using the keypad , and then tap . • Logs : Make a call from the history of incoming and outgoing calls and messages.
Communication 46 F inding contacts Enter a name , phone number , or email address to find a c ontact in the contacts list. As characters are ent ered, pr edic ted contacts appear . Selec t one to place a call to it . Mak ing an interna tional call T ap and hold 0 until the + sig n appears.
Communication 47 • → Con tacts : Open the contacts list. • → Memo : Creat e a memo. • → Message : Send a message. • → One -handed operation : Set the keypad for con venient use with one hand. • → T ransfer : Connect the first par ty to the second par ty .
Communication 48 Receiving calls Answ ering a call When a call comes in, drag outside the large cir cle, or pr ess the headset button. If the call waiting ser vice is active, another call can be made . When the second call is answer ed, the first call is put on hold .
Communication 49 Ending a call T ap End call to end a call. Or pr ess the headset button. V ideo calls Mak ing a video call Enter the number or select a contact from the contacts list, and then tap to make a video call. During a video call The f ollowing actions are available: • Swit ch camera : Switch between the fr ont and rear camera.
Communication 50 T ap and hold the other par ty ’ s image to access the f ollowing options: • Captur e image : Capture the other party ’ s image . This f eature ma y not be available depending on the r egion or ser vice provider . • Record video : T ake a video of the other par ty ’ s images.
Communication 51 C ontac ts Use this application to manage c ontac ts, including phone numbers , email addresses , and others. T ap Con tacts on the Applications screen. Managing con tac ts Crea ting a contac t T ap and ent er contact information. • : Add an image .
Communication 52 Searching f or con tac ts Use one of the f ollowing search methods: • Scroll up or down the con tacts list. • Use the index at the right side of the c ontacts list for quick scrolling , by dragging a finger along it. • T ap the search field at the t op of the contac ts list and enter sear ch cr iteria.
Communication 53 Impor ting and expor ting contacts Impor ting contacts T ap → Impor t/Expor t → Impor t from SIM card , Impor t from SD card , or Impor t from USB storage . Expor ting contacts T ap → Impor t/Expor t → Expor t to SIM card , Expor t to SD card , or Expor t to USB storage .
Communication 54 C ontac t groups Adding c ontac ts to a gr oup Selec t a gr oup , and then tap . S elect contacts to add, and then tap Done . Managing groups T ap , and then take one of the follo wing actions: • Create : Make a new group . • Search : Search for c ontac ts.
Communication 55 Messaging Use this application to send t ex t messages (SMS) or multimedia messages (MMS). T ap Messaging on the Applications screen. Y ou may incur additional charges for sending or r eceiving messages while you are outside your home service area.
Communication 56 V iewing incoming messages Incoming messages are gr ouped into message threads by con tact. Selec t a contact to view the person ’ s message . Listening to a v oice message T ap and hold 1 on the keypad , and then follow the instructions from your service provider .
Communication 57 Sending scheduled messages While composing a message , tap → Schedule sending . Tick Schedule sending , set a time and date , and then tap Done .
Communication 58 Google M ail Use this application to quickly and directly access the Google Mail ser vice. T ap Google Mail on the Applications screen. • This application ma y not be available depending on the r egion or ser vice pr ovider . • This application ma y be labelled differ ently depending on the reg ion or ser vice provider .
Communication 59 Labels Google Mail does not use ac tual folders , but uses labels instead. When Google Mail is launched, it displa ys messages labelled Inbox. T ap to view messages in other labels. T o add a label to a message , selec t the message, tap , and then select the label to assign.
Communication 60 Swit ching bet w een chats Scroll left or right. Deleting chat history Chats are aut omatically sav ed. T o delete the chat history , tap → Clear chat history . Google+ Use this application to sta y connec ted with people via Google ’ s social network ser vice.
Communication 61 ChatON Use this application to cha t with any devic e. T o use this application, you must sig n in to your Samsung account. T ap ChatON on the Applications screen. This application ma y not be available depending on the r egion or ser vice pr ovider .
62 W eb & net w ork Internet Use this application to br owse the Internet. T ap Internet on the Applications screen. V iewing webpages T ap the address field , enter the web address , and then tap Go . T ap to share , save , or print the current w ebpage while viewing a webpage .
W eb & network 63 Links T ap and hold a link on the webpage t o open it in a new page, sa ve , or copy . T o view sa ved links , use Downloads . (p . 103) Sharing w ebpages T o shar e a webpage addr ess with others, tap → Share via . T o shar e a par t of a webpage , tap and hold the desired te xt, and then tap Share .
W eb & network 64 Searching the w eb by voic e T ap the address field , tap , speak a keywor d, and then selec t one of the suggested keywor ds that appear . Syncing with other de vices Sync open tabs and bookmarks to use with Chrome on another device , when you ar e logged in with the same Google account.
W eb & network 65 P airing with other Bluetooth devices On the Applications screen, tap Settings → Connections → Bluetooth → Scan , and detected devices are list ed. Select the device you want t o pair with, and then accept the aut o - generated passkey on both devic es to confirm.
W eb & network 66 Samsung Link Use this application to pla y contents sav ed on various devices over the Internet. Y ou can play and send multimedia files on your device t o another device or web storage service. T o use this application, y ou must sign in to your Samsung accoun t and regist er two or more devices.
W eb & network 67 Managing con tents on a w eb storage service Selec t a web st orage ser vice , and then view and manage your files. T o download files fr om a web storage service, tap , select files, and then tap Done .
W eb & network 68 Joining Group Pla y • T ap Join group , select a Group Play session to join, and then en ter the passwor d for the group . Selec t a media category and the content that is curr ently being shared will appear on the device . • Activate the NFC f eature.
W eb & network 69 S Beam Use this f eature t o send data, such as videos, images , and documents. Do not send copyright-pr otec ted data via S Beam. Doing so may violat e copyright laws . Samsung is not responsible for an y liabilities caused by the illegal use of copyright ed data.
W eb & network 70 W a tchON Use this application to c onnec t to a T V to watch your fa vourite shows and movies . T ap W atchON on the Applications screen. Y ou must first connec t the device to a network and ensur e that the device ’ s infrar ed por t is facing the T V .
71 Media Music Use this application to list en to music. T ap Music on the Applications screen. • Some file formats are not supported depending on the device ’ s soft war e version. • Some files may not play pr operly depending on the encoding method used.
Media 72 T o listen t o songs at equal volume levels , tap → Settings → Smar t V olume . When Smar t V olume is activated, the v olume may end up louder than the device volume lev el. Use caution t o av oid long-term exposure t o loud sounds to prev ent damage to your hearing .
Media 73 Camer a Use this application to take phot os or videos. Use Galler y to view photos and videos taken with the devic e ’ s camera. (p . 79) T ap Camer a on the Applications screen. • The camera aut omatically shuts off when unused. • Make sure that the lens is clean.
Media 74 Shooting mode Several photo eff ec ts are a vailable. T ap MODE , and then scroll up or down the scr een at the right side of the screen. • Aut o : Use this to allo w the camera to evaluat e the sur roundings and det ermine the ideal mode for the phot o .
Media 75 P anoramic photos A panoramic photo is a wide landscape image consisting of multiple shots . T ap MODE → P anorama . T ap and move the camer a in one direc tion. When the blue frame aligns with the viewfinder , the camera automatically takes another shot in a panoramic sequenc e.
Media 76 Recor ding mode T ap → to change rec ording mode. • Normal : Use this mode f or normal quality . • Limit for MMS : Use this mode to lo wer quality for sending via messag ing. Zooming in and out Use one of the f ollowing methods: • Use the V olume button to zoom in or out .
Media 77 C ontrolling the camera r emotely Set a device as a viewfinder to contr ol the camera remotely . T ap → → Remote viewfinder , and then connect the device and the camera using Wi-F i Direct or NFC. T ap to take a photo r emotely using the device as a viewfinder .
Media 78 • Review : Briefly display photos taken. • V olume key : Set the device to use the V olume button to con trol the shutter or z oom function. • T imer : Use this f or delayed-time shots . • White balanc e : Selec t an appropriat e white balance , so images have a true -to-life colour range.
Media 79 Galler y Use this application to view images and videos . T ap Galler y on the Applications screen. • Some file formats are not supported depending on the soft ware installed on the device . • Some files may not play pr operly depending on the encoding method used.
Media 80 Pla ying videos Video files sho w the icon on the preview . S elect a video to watch it and tap . T rimming segmen ts of a video Selec t a video , and then tap . Move the start bracket to the desired starting point, move the end bracket to the desir ed ending point, and then sav e the video.
Media 81 Modifying images When viewing an image, tap and use the follo wing func tions: • Rot ate : Rotate the image . • Crop : Crop the image . • Colour : Adjust the satur ation or brightness of the image. • Effect : Apply effects to the image .
Media 82 T agging fac es T ap → Settings , and then tick F ace tag . A yellow fr ame appears around the recognised face on an image . T ap the face , tap Add name , and then select or add a contact. When the face tag appears on an image , tap the face tag and use available options, such as making calls or sending messages.
Media 83 T ap Crea te album → F rom suggestions . Selec t an album, enter a title f or the album, and then tap Crea te album → OK . The device will r ecommend mak ing stor y albums when you surpass the pr eset number of photos in a single day . V iewing stor y albums Selec t a story album.
Media 84 V ideo Use this application to pla y video files. T ap V ideo on the Applications screen. • Some file formats are not supported depending on the device's software. • Some files may not play pr operly depending on the encoding method used.
Media 85 Sharing videos T ap → Share via , select videos by tick ing, tap Done , and then select a sharing method. Using P opup V ideo play er Use this f eature t o use other applications without closing the video play er . While watching videos, tap to use the pop-up player .
Media 86 Sharing videos Selec t the video to view , tap , and then select a sharing method. Uploading videos Selec t your ac count, tap , selec t a video , enter information f or the video , and then tap UPL OAD . F lipboard Use this application to ac cess your personalised magazines.

89 Utilities S Memo Use this application to cr eate a memo using images and voice r ecordings. T ap S Memo on the Applications screen. C omposing memos Creat e memos with enr iched cont ent by dra wing sketches with your finger or adding images or voice memos .
Utilities 90 When jotting down a memo , tap once more to change the pen type, line thickness, or pen colour . When erasing the handwritten memo , tap once more t o change the eraser size or tap Clear all to clear the memo . Change the line thickness. Change the pen colour .
Utilities 91 T o change the view mode , tap → List view . T o cr eate a memo by importing a file, tap → Impor t . T o export memos as another file format, tap → Expor t . T o cr eate a f older , tap → Crea te folder . T o mov e memos to another folder , tap → M ove .
Utilities 92 S Planner Use this application to manage ev ents and tasks. T ap S Planner on the Applications screen. Crea ting events or tasks T ap , and then use one of the following methods: • Add ev ent : Enter an ev ent with an optional repeat setting .
Utilities 93 Attach a map showing the loca tion of the event. En ter the location in the Location field, tap next to the field, and then pinpoint the pr ecise location by tapping and holding on the map that appears. Attach a memo fr om S Memo. T ap Memos , and then compose a new memo or select one of the existing memos.
Utilities 94 Changing calendar type Selec t one from among diff erent types of calendars including year , month, week, and others at the right side of the screen.
Utilities 95 T o upload files to Dr opbox, tap → → Upload here → Photos or videos or Other files . T o open files in Dr opbox, select a file. While viewing images or videos, tap to add it to the fa vourites list. T o open files in the fav ourites list, tap .
Utilities 96 Clock Use this application to set alarms , check the time in any location in the world, measur e the duration of an ev ent, set a timer , or use as the desk clock.
Utilities 97 Stopping alarms Drag outside the large cir cle to stop an alarm. Drag outside the lar ge circle to repeat the alarm after a specified length of time. Deleting alarms T ap and hold the alarm, and then tap Delete . W orld clock Crea ting clocks T ap Add city , and then enter a city name or select a cit y from the cities list.
Utilities 98 Calcula tor Use this application f or simple or complex calculations. T ap Calculat or on the Applications screen. Rotate the device t o landscape orientation to display the scien tific calculator . If Screen rotation is disabled, tap → Scientific calculator .
Utilities 99 V oic e R ec order Use this application to r ecord or play v oice memos. T ap V oice Recor der on the Applications screen. Recor ding voice memos T ap to star t rec ording . Speak into the microphone at the bottom of the devic e. T ap to pause recording .
Utilities 100 Managing v oice memos In the list of voice memos, tap and select one of the following: • Share via : Selec t voic e memos to send, and then select a sharing method. • Delete : Selec t voic e memos to delete . • Settings : Change the voice r ecorder settings.
Utilities 101 Driving mode In driving mode, the device will read c ontent aloud when y ou have incoming calls , messages, and notifications so you can use the devic e without hands while driving. F or example, the device will read aloud the caller’ s name or phone number when a call comes in.
Utilities 102 Search scope T o select what applications to sear ch, tap → Settings → Phone search , and then tick the items to sear ch for . Google Now Launch Google search to view Google Now car ds that show the current wea ther , public transit inf o , your next appointment, and mor e when you ar e most likely to need it.
Utilities 103 V iewing files Selec t a f older to open it. T o go back to the parent f older , tap . T o r eturn to the root director y , tap . In a folder , tap , and then use one of the follo wing options: • Selec t all : Selec t all files to apply the same option to them a t once .

T ravel & local 105 Getting directions for a destination 1 T ap . 2 T ap , and then selec t a method to enter starting and ending locations: • My current location : Use current loca tion for starting location. • Con tacts : Selec t from the c ontacts list.
