Getting star ted 10 Installing the SIM or USIM card and batt er y Inser t the SIM or USIM card provided b y the mobile telephone ser vice provider , and the included battery . Only microSIM car ds work with the device . 1 Remove the back c over . Be careful not to damage y our finger nails when you r emove the back cov er .
Getting star ted 11 • Do not inser t a memor y card into the SIM car d slot. I f a memor y card happens t o be lodged in the SIM card slot, take the devic e to a Samsung Ser vice Centr e to remov e the memor y card. • Use caution not to lose or let others use the SIM or USIM car d.

Getting star ted 13 Char ging the ba tter y Use the charger t o charge the battery before using it f or the first time. A computer can be also used to charge the devic e by connecting them via the USB cable. Use only Samsung-appro ved chargers , batteries, and cables.
Getting star ted 14 • The device can be used while it is char ging , but it may take longer to fully char ge the battery . • If the device receiv es an unstable power supply while charging , the touch screen may not function. If this happens, unplug the charger from the devic e.
Getting star ted 15 Reducing the batter y c onsumption Y our device provides options that help y ou save ba tter y pow er . By customising these options and deactivating featur es in the background, y ou can use the device longer between charges: • When you ar e not using the device, switch to sleep mode b y pressing the P ower butt on.

19 Basics Indicator ic ons The icons displa yed at the t op of the screen pr ovide inf ormation about the status of the device . The icons list ed in the table below are most c ommon.

Basics 21 Dragging T o mov e an icon, thumbnail, or preview t o a new location, tap and hold it and drag it to the target position. Double -tapping Double -tap on a webpage or image to zoom in a part.
Basics 22 F licking Flick left or right on the Home screen or the A pplications screen t o see another panel. F lick up or down to scr oll through a webpage or a list, such as contacts. Pinching Spread two fingers apart on a webpage, map , or image to zoom in a part.
Basics 23 C ontrol motions Simple motions allow easy contr ol of the device. Befor e using motions, make sur e the motion featur e is ac tivated . On the Home screen, tap → Settings → Motion , and then drag the Motion switch to the right. Exc essive shaking or impac t to the device ma y result in unintended inputs.
Basics 24 T urning o ver T ur n ov er the device to mut e ringtone, pause media pla yback or mute the F M radio. Shaking Shake the device to sear ch for Bluetooth devices .
Basics 25 Notifications Notification icons appear on the status bar a t the top of the screen t o report missed calls, new messages, calendar ev ents, devic e status, and mor e. Drag down fr om the status bar to open the notifications panel. Scr oll the list to see additional aler ts.
Basics 26 Home screen The Home screen is the starting point to access all of the devic e ’ s featur es. I t display s indicator icons, widgets , shor tcuts to applications, and others . The Home screen can ha ve multiple panels. T o view other panels, scr oll left or r ight.
Basics 27 Rearranging panels Adding a ne w panel T ap → Edit page → . Moving a panel T ap → Edit page , tap and hold a panel preview , and then drag it to a new location. Removing a panel T ap → Edit page , tap and hold a panel preview , and then drag it to the rubbish bin at the bottom of the screen.
Basics 28 Adding widgets t o the Home screen On the Home screen, tap → W idgets . Scroll left or right on the widgets panel, and then tap and hold a widget to add it to the Home scr een. Put it on a location you wan t, resiz e it by dragging the frame if nec essar y , and then tap anywhere on the screen to sa ve the location of the widget.
Basics 29 Applica tions screen The Applications scr een displays icons f or all applications, including an y new applications installed. On the Home screen, tap to open the Applications scr een. T o view other panels , scroll left or right. Rearranging applica tions T ap → Edit , tap and hold an application, and then drag it to a new loca tion.
Basics 30 Sharing applications Share downloaded applica tions with other users via email, Bluetooth, or other methods . T ap → Share apps , select applications, tap Done , and then select a sharing method. The next steps var y depending on the method selected.
Basics 31 Entering upper case T ap before ent ering a character . For all caps , tap it t wice . Changing language ke yboards Add languages t o the keyboard, and then slide the spac e key lef t or right to change language keyboards . Basics 34 C onnec ting with S amsung Kies Samsung Kies is a computer application that manages media cont ents and personal information with Samsung devices . Download the latest Samsung Kies from the Samsung website . 1 Connect the device to the comput er using the USB cable.
Basics 35 Securing the device Pr event others from using or acc essing personal data and information stored in the devic e by using the security features . The device requir es an unlock code whenever unlocking it. Setting a pattern On the Applications screen, tap Settings → Lock scr een → Screen lock → P attern .
Basics 36 Unlock ing the devic e T ur n on the screen b y pressing the P ower butt on or the Home button, and enter the unlock code . If the unlock code is forgott en, take the device to a Samsung Ser vice Centre t o reset it. Upgr ading the device The device can be upg raded to the lat est soft ware .

Mak ing calls Mak ing a call Use one of the f ollowing methods: • Keypad : Enter the number using the keypad , and then tap . • Logs : Make a call from the history of incoming and outgoing calls and messages.
Communication 38 F inding contacts Enter a name , phone number , or email address to find a c ontact in the contacts list. As characters are ent ered, pr edic ted contacts appear . Selec t one to place a call to it . Mak ing an interna tional call T ap and hold 0 until the + sign appears.
Communication 39 Adding c ontac ts T o add a phone number to the c ontac ts list from the keypad , enter the number and tap Add to C ontac ts . Sending a message T ap to send a message to the number on displa y . V iewing call logs T ap Logs to view the history of incoming and outgoing calls.
Communication 40 Rejec ting a call When a call comes in, drag outside the lar ge circle . T o send a message when r ejecting an incoming call, tap Rejec t call with message . T o create the rejection message, tap → Call settings → Set reject messages .
Communication 41 C ontac ts Use this application to manage c ontac ts, including phone numbers , email addresses , and others. T ap Con tacts on the Applications screen. Managing con tac ts T ap Con tacts . Crea ting a contac t T ap and enter contact information.

Communication 47 Sending scheduled messages While composing a message , tap → Schedule sending . Tick Schedule sending , set a time and date , and then tap Done .
Communication 48 Google M ail Use this application to quickly and directly access the Google Mail ser vice. Communication 49 Labels Google Mail does not use ac tual folders , but uses labels instead. When Google Mail is launched, it displa ys messages labelled Inbox. T ap to view messages in other labels. T o add a label to a message , selec t the message, tap , and then select the label to assign.
Communication 50 Swit ching bet w een chats Scroll left or right. Deleting chat history Chats are aut omatically sav ed. T o delete the chat history , tap → Clear chat history . Google+ Use this application to sta y connec ted with people via Google ’ s social network ser vice.

W eb & network 53 Bluetooth Bluetooth crea tes a direct wireless c onnection bet ween two devices o ver shor t distances. Use Bluetooth to ex change data or media files with other devices. • Samsung is not responsible f or the loss, int erception, or misuse of da ta sent or receiv ed via the Bluetooth featur e.
54 Media Music Pla yer Use this application to list en to music. T ap Music Play er on the Applications screen. • Some file formats are not supported depending on the soft ware installed on the device . • Some files may not play pr operly depending on the encoding method used.
Media 55 T o listen t o songs at equal volume levels , tap → Settings → Smar t V olume . When Smar t V olume is activated, the v olume may end up louder than the device volume lev el. Use caution t o av oid long-term exposure t o loud sounds to prev ent damage to your hearing .
Media 56 Camer a Use this application to take phot os or videos. Use Galler y to view photos and videos taken with the devic e ’ s camera. (p . 61) T ap Camer a on the Applications screen. • The camera aut omatically shuts off when unused. • Make sure that the lens is clean.
Media 57 Scene mode Pr edefined settings make point-and-shoot photos easier to take . T ap → Scene mode . • Landscape : Use this to take phot os of blue sk ies and landscapes with richer colours. • Spor ts : Use this setting f or fast-moving subjects.
Media 58 P anoramic photos A panoramic photo is a wide landscape image consisting of multiple shots . T ap → Shooting mode → P anorama . T ap and move the camer a in one direc tion. When the blue frame aligns with the viewfinder , the camera automatically takes another shot in a panoramic sequenc e.
Media 59 Recor ding mode Change the recor ding mode. Select among various effects that are a vailable. Change the camera settings. Determine how much light the camera ’ s sensor receiv es. Indicates which storage is in use. Switch between still and video mode.

Utilities 72 Dropbo x Use this application to sa ve and share files with others via the Dropbo x cloud storage. When you sa ve files to Dr opbox, your device aut omatically syncs with the web server and any other computers that ha ve Dropbo x installed.
