Getting star ted 8 The microphone a t the top of the device is active only when y ou use the speakerphone or take videos. • Do not cov er the antenna ar ea with your hands or other objects. This may cause connectivity problems or drain the battery .

Getting star ted 10 Installing the SIM or USIM card and batt er y Inser t the SIM or USIM card provided b y the mobile telephone ser vice provider , and the included battery . Only microSIM car ds work with the device . 1 Remove the back c over . • Be careful not to damage y our finger nails when you r emove the back cov er .
Getting star ted 11 • Do not remov e the protective tape cov ering the antenna, as this can damage the antenna. • Do not inser t a memor y card into the SIM car d slot. I f a memor y card happens t o be lodged in the SIM card slot, take the devic e to a Samsung Ser vice Centr e to remov e the memor y card.
Getting star ted 12 Removing the SIM or USIM car d and battery 1 Remove the back c over . 2 Pull out the ba tter y . 3 Push the SIM or USIM car d until it disengages from the device , and then pull it out.
Getting star ted 13 Char ging the ba tter y Use the charger t o charge the battery before using it f or the first time. A computer can be also used to charge the devic e by connecting them via the USB cable. Use only Samsung-appro ved chargers , batteries, and cables.
Getting star ted 14 • The device can be used while it is char ging , but it may take longer to fully char ge the battery . • If the device receiv es an unstable power supply while charging , the touch screen may not function. If this happens, unplug the charger from the devic e.
Getting star ted 15 Reducing the batter y c onsumption Y our device provides options that help y ou save ba tter y pow er . By customising these options and deactivating featur es in the background, y ou can use the device longer between charges: • When you ar e not using the device, switch to sleep mode b y pressing the P ower butt on.
Getting star ted 16 1 Remove the back c over . 2 Inser t a memor y card with the gold- colour ed contacts facing downw ards . 3 Push the memory card into the slot until it locks in plac e. 4 Replace the back cov er . Removing the memor y card Befor e removing the memory card, first unmount it f or safe remo val.
Getting star ted 17 F ormatting the memor y card A memor y card f or matted on a c omputer may not be c ompatible with the device . F ormat the memor y card on the device . On the Home screen, tap Apps → Settings → Stor age → F ormat SD card → F ormat SD card → Erase ev er ything .
Getting star ted 18 Holding the devic e Do not cov er the antenna ar ea with your hands or other objects. This may cause connectivity problems or drain the ba tter y . L ock ing and unlock ing the devic e When not in use, lock the devic e to prevent un wanted operation.
Getting star ted 19 S witching to silent mode Use one of the f ollowing methods: • Pr ess and hold the Volume butt on down until it switches to silent mode . • Pr ess and hold the Po wer button, and then tap Mute . • Open the notifications panel at the top of the scr een, and then tap Sound .
20 Basics Indicator ic ons The icons displa yed at the t op of the screen pr ovide inf ormation about the status of the device . The icons list ed in the table below are most c ommon.
Basics 21 Icon Meaning Fligh t mode activated Error occurr ed or caution required Battery power level U sing the touch scr een Use only fingers to use the t ouch screen. • Do not allow the touch scr een to come int o contact with other electr ical devices .
Basics 22 Dragging T o mov e an icon, thumbnail, or preview t o a new location, tap and hold it and drag it to the target position. Double -tapping Double -tap on a webpage, map , or image to zoom in a part.
Basics 23 F licking Flick left or right on the Home screen or the A pplications screen t o see another panel. F lick up or down to scr oll through a webpage or a list, such as contacts. Pinching Spread two fingers apart on a webpage, map , or image to zoom in a part.
Basics 24 C ontrol motions Simple motions allow easy contr ol of the device. Befor e using motions, make sur e the motion featur e is ac tivated . On the Home screen, tap Apps → Settings → Motion , and then drag the Motion switch to the right. Exc essive shaking or impac t to the device ma y result in unintended inputs.
Basics 25 Picking up When you pick up the devic e after it has been idle for some time or when the scr een has turned off , it vibrates if you ha ve missed calls or new messages. Holding to ear While viewing call, message , or contact details, pick up and hold the device to y our ear to make a call.
Basics 26 P anning to mov e T ap and hold an item, and then mov e the device to the left or right to move the item t o another panel on the Home screen or the Applications scr een. P anning to bro wse When an image is zoomed in, tap and hold a point on the scr een, and then move the device in any dir ec tion to bro wse the image.
Basics 27 Double -tapping Double -tap the device to mov e to the top of a list of c ontacts or emails. Rotating While the screen is locked , tap and hold the screen, and then rotate the devic e to landscape orientation to launch the camera.
Basics 28 T urning o ver T ur n ov er the device to mut e ringtone, pause media pla yback, or mute the FM radio (when using the speaker). Shaking • Shake the device to sear ch for Bluetooth devices , or computers in Kies via Wi-F i .
Basics 29 T ilting T ap and hold two points on the scr een, and then tilt the device back and forth to zoom in or out. P age Buddy Use this f eature t o use specific applications based on your actions. P ages related t o your actions appear in the following conditions: • When you c onnect a headset or dock to the device.
Basics 30 • Screen rota tion : Allow or pr event the int er face from r otating when you rotat e the device. • Bluetooth : Activate or deactivate the Bluet ooth featur e. • Mobile data : Activate or deactivate the da ta connection. • Blocking mode : Activate or deactivate blocking mode.
Basics 31 Moving an item T ap and hold an item and drag it t o a new location. T o move it to another panel , drag it to the side of the screen. Removing an item T ap and hold an item, and drag it t o the rubbish bin that appears at the top of the Home screen.
Basics 32 U sing applications This device can run man y different types of applications , ranging fr om media to Internet applications. Opening an application On the Home screen or the Applications scr een, selec t an application icon to open it .
Basics 33 Rearranging applica tions T ap → Edit , tap and hold an application, and then drag it to a new loca tion. T o mov e it to another panel, drag it t o the side of the screen. Organising with f olders Put r elated applications together in a f older for con venience .
Basics 34 Help Ac cess help information t o lear n how to use the devic e and applications or configure impor tant settings. T ap Help on the Applications screen. Select an item to view tips . T o r eset help pop-ups if you have hidden them, tap Show help tip pop-ups , and then select items by ticking.
Basics 35 Changing language ke yboards T ap the input language key to change language keyboar ds. Strok e mode On the 3x4 keyboard , tap the stroke keys . T ap when you ar e unsure which str oke to enter . T o view mor e alternative char acters, tap .
Basics 36 Using the Samsung ke yboard Changing the ke yboard la yout T ap → P or trait keyboard types , and then tap Qwer ty keyboard or 3x4 keyboar d . On the 3x4 keyboard , a key has three or f our charac ters. T o enter a char acter , tap repeat edly the key corresponding to the char ac ter .
Basics 37 Handwriting T ap and hold , tap , and then write a wor d with a finger . Suggested wor ds appear as characters are ent ered. Select a suggested wor d. Entering t ex t by v oice Activate the v oice input feature and then speak in to the microphone .
Basics 38 C onnec ting to a W i-F i net w ork Connect the device to a Wi-F i net work to use the Internet or shar e media files with other devices. (p . 99) T urning W i-F i on and off Open the notifications panel, and then tap Wi - Fi to turn it on or off .
Basics 39 F orgetting W i-Fi net w orks Any network that has ev er been used, including the current network, can be forgott en so the device will not automatically c onnec t to it.
Basics 40 T ransf erring files Move audio , video , image, or other types of files from the devic e to the computer , or vice versa. The f ollowing file f ormats are supported by some applications. Some file f ormats are not suppor ted depending on the version of the devic e’ s sof tware.
Basics 41 C onnec ting as a media device 1 Connect the device to the comput er using the USB cable. 2 Open the notifications panel, and then tap Connected as a media devic e → Media device (M TP) . T ap Camer a (PTP) if your comput er does not suppor t M edia T ransfer P rotoc ol (MTP) or not hav e any appr opriate driver installed .
Basics 42 Setting a pattern On the Applications screen, tap Settings → Lock scr een → Screen lock → P attern . Draw a patt er n by connecting four dots or mor e, and then draw the patt er n again to v erify it. Set a backup unlock PIN to unlock the screen when you f orget the pattern.
Basics 43 Unlock ing the devic e T ur n on the screen b y pressing the P ower butt on or the Home button, and enter the unlock code . If the unlock code is forgott en, take the device to a Samsung Ser vice Centre t o reset it. Upgr ading the device The device can be upg raded to the lat est soft ware .
44 C ommunication Phone Use this application to make or answ er a call. T ap Phone on the Applications screen. Mak ing calls Mak ing a call Use one of the f ollowing methods: • Keypad : Enter the number using the keypad , and then tap . • Logs : Make a call from the history of incoming and outgoing calls and messages.
Communication 45 F inding contacts Enter a name , phone number , or email address to find a c ontact in the contacts list. As characters are ent ered, pr edic ted contacts appear . Selec t one to place a call to it . Mak ing an interna tional call T ap and hold 0 until the + sig n appears.
Communication 46 Adding c ontac ts T o add a phone number to the c ontac ts list from the keypad , enter the number and tap Add to C ontac ts . V iewing call logs T ap Logs to view the history of incoming and outgoing calls. T o filter a call log , tap → V iew by , and then select an option.
Communication 47 Rejec ting a call When a call comes in, drag outside the cir cle, or pr ess and hold the headset button. T o send a message when r ejecting an incoming call, tap Rejec t call with message . T o create the rejection message, tap → Call settings → Set reject messages .
Communication 48 V ideo calls Mak ing a video call Enter the number or select a contact from the contacts list, and then tap to make a video call. During a video call The f ollowing actions are available: • Swit ch camera : Switch between the fr ont and rear camera.
Communication 49 Sw apping images Drag an image of either par ty onto the other par ty ’ s image to swap the images . C ontac ts Use this application to manage c ontac ts, including phone numbers , email addresses , and others. T ap Con tacts on the Applications screen.
Communication 50 Editing a con tac t Selec t a contact to edit, and then tap . Deleting a contact T ap → Delete . Setting a speed dial number T ap → Speed dial setting , select a speed dial number , and then select a contact for it. T o remov e a speed dial number , tap and hold it, and then tap Remov e .
Communication 51 Syncing with Samsung C ontac ts T ap → Merge with Samsung . Contacts synced with Samsung Con tacts appear with in the contacts list. If a contact is added or deleted on the device, it is also added to or delet ed from Samsung Contacts, and vic e versa.
Communication 52 C ontac t groups Adding c ontac ts to a gr oup Selec t a gr oup , and then tap . S elect contacts to add, and then tap Done . Managing groups T ap , and then take one of the follo wing actions: • Create : Make a new group . • Search : Search for c ontac ts.
Communication 53 Messaging Use this application to send t ex t messages (SMS) or multimedia messages (MMS). T ap Messaging on the Applications screen. • This f eature ma y be unavailable depending on y our ser vice pro vider ’ s L TE network. F or details, contact your service provider .
Communication 54 V iewing incoming messages Incoming messages are gr ouped into message threads by con tact. Selec t a contact to view the person ’ s message . Listening to a v oice message T ap and hold 1 on the keypad , and then follow the instructions from your service provider .
Communication 55 Sending scheduled messages While composing a message , tap → Schedule sending . Tick Schedule sending , set a time and date , and then tap Done .
Communication 56 Google M ail Use this application to quickly and directly access the Google Mail ser vice. T ap Gmail on the Applications screen. • This application ma y not be available depending on the r egion or ser vice pr ovider . • This application ma y be labelled differ ently depending on the reg ion or ser vice provider .
Communication 57 Labels Google Mail does not use ac tual folders , but uses labels instead. When Google Mail is launched, it displa ys messages labelled Inbox. T ap to view messages in other labels. T o add a label to a message , selec t the message, tap , and then select the label to assign.
Communication 58 Swit ching bet w een chats Scroll left or right. Deleting chat history Chats are aut omatically sav ed. T o delete chat history , tap → Clear chat history . Google+ Use this application to sta y connec ted with people via Google ’ s social network ser vice.
Communication 59 ChatON Use this application to cha t with any devic e that has a mobile phone number . T ap ChatON on the Applications screen. This application ma y not be available depending on the r egion or ser vice pr ovider .
60 W eb & net w ork Internet Use this application to br owse the Internet. T ap Internet on the Applications screen. V iewing webpages T ap the address field , enter the web address , and then tap Go . T ap to share , save , or print the current w ebpage while viewing a webpage .
W eb & network 61 Histor y T ap → Histor y to open a webpage fr om the list of recently-visit ed webpages. T o clear the histor y , tap → Clear history . T ap → Histor y → Most visited to open a webpage fr om the list of most visited webpages.
W eb & network 62 Searching the w eb by voic e T ap the address field , tap , speak a keyword , and then select one of the suggested key wor ds that appear . Syncing with other de vices Sync open tabs and bookmarks to use with Chrome on another device , when you ar e logged in with the same Google account.
W eb & network 63 P airing with other Bluetooth devices On the Applications screen, tap Settings → Bluetooth → Scan , and detected devices are listed. Select the device you wan t to pair with, and then acc ept the auto- generated passkey on both devices to c onfirm.
W eb & network 64 Pla ying files on a remot e device Selec t a device or w eb storage , selec t a file, tap , and then select a device. • Suppor ted file f ormats may diff er depending on connected devices as a media play er . • Some files may be buffer ed while playing depending on the network connection.
W eb & network 65 NFC Y our device allows you t o read near field communication (NFC) tags that contain inf ormation about products. Y ou can also use this f eature t o make payments and buy tickets f or transpor tation or ev ents after downloading the requir ed applications.
W eb & network 66 S Beam Use this f eature t o send data, such as music, videos , images, and documents. Do not send copyright-pr otec ted data via S Beam. Doing so may violat e copyright laws . Samsung is not responsible for an y liabilities caused by the illegal use of copyright ed data.
67 Media Music Pla yer Use this application to list en to music. T ap Music Play er on the Applications screen. • Some file formats are not supported depending on the device ’ s soft war e version. • Some files may not play pr operly depending on the encoding used.
Media 68 Setting a song as ringtone T o use the curren tly-playing song as ringtone , tap → Set as → Phone ringtone . Crea ting playlists Make an own selection of songs. T ap Playlists , and then tap → Crea te playlist . Enter a title and tap OK .
Media 69 T ak ing photos T ak ing a photo T ap the image on the preview scr een where the camera should focus . When the subject is in focus , the focus frame turns green. T ap to take the photo . Indicates which storage is in use . Switch between still and video mode.
Media 70 • Autumn c olour : Use this setting f or red-shifted backgr ound scener y . • Te x t : Use this setting f or books or posters. • Candlelight : Use this setting f or images of bright light against a dark background . • F irework : Use this setting f or high- contr ast scenes.
Media 71 T ak ing videos T ak ing a video Slide the still-video switch to the video ic on, and then tap to take a video . T o stop recor ding, tap . • Manual focus is not av ailable in video mode. • The zoom function may not be av ailable when recor ding at the highest resolution.
Media 72 T ap to change rec ording mode. • Normal : Use this mode f or normal quality . • Limit for MMS : Use this mode to lo wer quality for sending via messag ing. Zooming in and out Use one of the f ollowing methods: • Use the V olume button to zoom in or out .

Media 75 V iewing images Launching Galler y displays a vailable folders. When another application, such as Email , sav es an image, the do wnload folder is automa tically creat ed to contain the image . Likewise, capturing a screenshot automatically cr eates the Screenshots folder .

Media 80 Scanning radio stations T ap → Scan , and then select a scan option. The FM r adio scans and saves a vailable stations automatically . Selec t the radio station y ou want from the stations list and tap to return t o the FM r adio screen.

Utilities 84 View mor e colours. Adjust the highlighter transpar enc y . Change the pen type. Change the line thickness. Change the pen colour . T o change the sheet backgr ound, tap → Change backgr ound . Inser ting images or a voice r ecording T ap to insert multimedia files.

Utilities 86 T o add an ev ent or task more briefly , tap a date to select it and tap it again. Enter a title and specify which calendar to use or sync with. Then tap Edit ev ent details or Edit task details to add more details , such as how often the event repea ts, when it has an advance alert, or where it takes place.
Utilities 87 Changing calendar type T ap , and then select one from among differ ent types of calendars including year , month, week, and others. A pinch gesture can be used t o change calendar t ype.

T ravel & local 98 Na vigation Use this application to sear ch for a route t o a destination. T ap Navigation on the Applications screen. • Navigation maps , your current location, and other naviga tional data may diff er from actual location information.
99 Settings About Settings Use this application to c onfigure the device, set application options , and add accounts. T ap Settings on the Applications screen. Wi - Fi Activate the Wi-F i featur e to connect to a Wi-F i network and access the Internet or other network devices.
Settings 100 W i-F i D irect Wi-F i Direct connects two devices directly via a Wi-F i network without requiring an access point. On the Settings screen, tap Wi - Fi → W i-Fi Direct . Bluetooth Activate the Bluet ooth featur e to exchange inf or mation ov er shor t distances.
Settings 101 F light mode This disables all wireless functions on your devic e. Y ou can use only non-network services. Mobile networks • Mobile data : Use to allo w packet switching data networks f or network ser vices.
Settings 102 S Beam Activate the S Beam f eature to send data, such as music, videos , images, and documents, t o devices that support NFC and Wi-F i Direct. Nearby devic es • F ile sharing : Activate media sharing to allo w other DLNA- enabled devices to access media files on your device .
Settings 103 Sound Change settings for various sounds on the devic e. • V olume : Adjust the v olume level for call ringtones , music and videos, syst em sounds, and notifications. • V ibration intensity : Adjust the f orce of the vibration notification.
Settings 104 • Aut o-rotate screen : Set the content t o rotat e automatically when the device is turned . • Screen timeout : Set the length of time the device waits befor e turning off the display ’ s backlight. • Smar t stay : Set to prev ent the display backlight from turning off while you ar e look ing at the display .
