18 ABOUT YOUR SCANNE R Once you understand a few s impl e terms we use i n t his manual an d familia r ize y ourself wit h your scanner ’s featu r es, you can put the sca nner to work for you. You simply determ in e the type of communi cations you want to recei ve , then set the scan ner to scan t hose commu- nicat i on s.
19 A LOOK A T THE KEYP AD Your sc anner’s keys might seem conf using at f i rst , but thi s informati on should hel p you underst and each key’s funct ion. HOLD — holds the fr equency search; holds on the cur- rent ID in the tru nk tr acking mode.
20 DELA Y — programs a 2-second del ay for the sel ected channel , a limi t search, o r each ser vi ce s can; progr ams a 5-s econd de lay whi le t runk t rack ing.
21 (trun king channe l acti vity bar s) — each repres ents a recei v ed trunk ing f r e quency or a data frequency while trun k tracki ng (see “Chann el Acti vity Bar s” on Page 47) . -1- — appears when t he weather service ba nd is se- lect ed.
22 MON — appears duri ng search m odes or when you select a monitor memor y. The num ber to t he ri ght of this indic ator s hows the curr ent moni tor memory nu m - ber.

33 SPEC IAL F EA TURES DELAY Many agencie s use a two- way radio system that might have a period o f 2 or m ore seconds between a query and a reply . To keep from missing a reply on a speci f ic channel , you can program a 2-secon d dela y into any channel or fre quency.

36 USING THE KEYLOCK Once you p rogram yo ur scann er, yo u can prote ct it from ac cidental progr am changes by turni ng on t he keyloc k f e ature. When locked, t he onl y controls that operat e ar e SCAN , MA N , KEY LOCK , VOLU ME/O FF , an d SQUE LCH .
37 TURNING THE KEY TONE OF F/ON To turn of f t he key tone, follow t hese st eps. 1. T urn off the scanner . 2. While hol ding down L-OUT/S/ S, tur n on the scan- ner . OFF bEEP a ppears. To tur n the key tone back on, repea t thes e steps . on bEEP appears.
38 SKIPPING DATA SIGNALS You can se t the scann er so it s k ips n onmodulated or data si gnals (suc h as fax or modem tra nsmissions) durin g a se arch o r scan . Note: Si nce dat a signals a r e not g eneral ly fou nd in the air band , this f eat ur e doe s not wor k in t he air band.
39 T RUNK T RACKING Your sc anner is des igned to t rack tran smissions o n Mo- toro l a Type I , Type II, a nd hybri d analog t r u nking sy s- tems, which ar e extensi v ely used in 8 00 MHz communi cati ons. Remem ber t hese importa nt poin ts when t racking transmissi ons: • Y our sca nner moni t o rs T ype II s ystems b y default .

41 SETTING SQUELCH FOR THE T RUNK T RA CKING MODE Your scann er’s squelc h se tting is aut omat ically adj ust- ed duri ng t runk t r acki ng, which means it is not nece s- sary to manuall y adjust squelch whi le t r acki ng trunked tran smissions.
42 Before scanni ng a t runked sys tem’s t ra nsmissions, you must s tore th e trunked syst em’s f requenc ies in one of the banks i n your scanne r by f oll owing these ste ps. 1. Press PRO G then TR UNK . TRUNK appear s and one or more bank num ber s f las h.
43 6. Press SRC to beg i n search ing for the trun k’s data c hannel (the channel that controls the tr unk). SEARCH flas hes as the scanner searches for the data chan nel. While the s canner looks t hrough the fr equencies, you see th em on the disp lay .
44 Hint: While scanning, you wil l not know exac tly who the IDs ar e assigned to until you lis ten awhile or until you loc at e ID lists i n fr equency guides or on inter net site s such as www.
45 Locking Out I D s As with conv ention al scanni ng, it is possi ble to lock out unwante d t raffic . This is part icul arly i mportant in trun k- ed syst ems because si gnals yo u cannot lis t en to ( such as water meters, door alarms, traf fic si gnals , and en- crypt ed signals ) are as signed ID s just lik e other user s.
46 Using T runk T racking Scan Delay Many t runked systems h ave a per iod of 2 or more sec- onds bet ween a query and a re ply. You can pr ogram a 5-secon d delay to h old on an ID f or 5 seconds to wait for a reply. The sca nner con tinues to m onit or th e fre- quency f or 5 secon ds after t h e trans mission stops be- fore re suming scann ing .
47 CHANNEL ACTIVITY BARS Your scan ner has 20 chan nel activi ty indicato rs (bars) which show the act ivity taki ng p lace on a trunke d sys- tem. Y ou can see how many fre quencies ar e being used and gen erally moni t or how much c ommunication tra ffi c is o c cur ri n g.
48 SCAN LISTS When y ou progr am trunked f r e quencies into a ban k (see “St orin g Trunk ed Frequencie s” on Page 4 1), your scanner sets up 5 scan li sts in to which y ou can stor e your fav or it e IDs.

52 When a Type I system is desi gned, the addr ess infor- mation f or all its use r IDs is di vided i nto 8 equal -siz e blocks , number ed 0–7, and each bloc k is ass i gned a size cod e. When you set up your scanner to track a Type I sys tem, you must cho ose a size c ode for each block.
