8 PREPARATION INSTALLING BATTERIES Your s ystem us es four AAA bat teries f or powe r. For t he long - est op erati on and best per formanc e, we rec ommend you use alka line batte ries (Ra dio Sha ck Cat. No. 23-555). Th e batt eries protect the system ’s memor y duri ng power fail - ures.

Use a Phil li ps screwdr iv er to loosen the screw i n the bat - ter y compartment cover on t he bottom of the sy stem, and r emove the cover . 3. Inser t fresh ba t ter ies in to the comp artment as i ndicat ed by the polari ty symbol s ( + and –) ma rke d insid e the com- part ment.
10 CONNECTING AN OPTIONAL AC ADAPTER If you subsc ribe to a message wait ing ser vice, yo u need an AC adapte r (such as Cat. No. 273 -1455, no t suppli ed) to pow- er the sy stem. Note: You mus t als o ke ep fres h ba tteries in the sy stem to pro - tect the inform ation s tored in memor y dur ing po wer fail ures.
11 Foll ow the se steps to co nnect an AC adapte r. 1. Inser t the AC ada pte r ’s ba rrel plug int o the DC 9V jac k on the back of the sy st em. 2.
12 CONNECTING TO A SINGLE PHONE LINE The sy st em conn ects t o the phone l ine and you r phone using two m odular phone- line connec tors. If your phon e does not have t his type of c onnector , you can get t he neces sary a dapt- ers at your loc al Radio Shac k store.
13 CONNECTING TO A T WO-LINE PHONE To reco rd inf ormation about call s received on a t wo-line phone, you can conn ect two systems using a tripl ex adapte r (Cat . No. 27 9-402). Eac h syste m only r ecords i nforma tion about ca ll s received on th e li ne to which it is connec ted.
14 CONNECTING TO AN ANSWERING MACHINE 1. Unplug the a nswerin g machin e’s modular cord fr om the modu lar jack and plug t his c ord into t he syst em’s TEL . LINE jack. 2. Plug one end of the s upplied m odular c ord in to the sys- tem ’s PHON E jack, t hen pl ug th e other end o f the cord int o the ans wering machi ne’ s m o dul ar jack.
