15 English Embedded numeric keypad The embedded numeric keypad func tions like a desktop numeric keypad. It is indicated b y small ch aracters located on the right-hand side of the ke ycaps. 17 English Hot keys The computer employs hot keys or ke y combinations to acces s most of the computer’s controls like screen brightness, volume output and th e BIOS Utility. To activate hot keys, press and hold the < Fn > key before pressing the other key i n the hot key comb ination.
1 Getting to know your TravelMate 18 English The Euro symbol If your keybo ard layout i s set to Uni ted States-I nternational , United Kingdom or if you have a keyboard with a European layout, you can type the Euro symbol on your keyboard. Note for US keyboard users: The keyboard layou t is set when you first set up Windows.
19 English To verify the keyboard type in Wi ndows XP, follow the steps below: 1 Click on Start , Contro l Panel . 2 Double-click on Regional and Language Options . 3 Click on the Language ta b and click on Details . 4 Verify that the keyboard layout used for "En English (United States)" is set to U nited States-International.
1 Getting to know your TravelMate 20 English Launch keys Located above the keyboard are thr ee buttons. The left-most button is the power button. To the right of the power button are the two launch ke ys. They are de signated as the Empowe ring Key and a programmable button.
21 English Touchpad The built-in touchpad is a pointing de vice that sen ses movement on its surface. This means the cursor respon ds as you move your finger on the surface of the touchpad. The central lo cation on the palmrest provides optimum comfort and support.
1 Getting to know your TravelMate 22 English Note: Keep your fingers dry and clean when u sing the touchpad. Also keep the touchpad dry and clean. The touchp ad is sensitive to finger movement, hence, the lighter the touch, the better the response. Tapping harder will not increase the touc hpad’s responsiveness.
23 English Storage This comput er suppli es you with the following media storage: • High-capacity Enhanc ed IDE hard disc • Internal optical drive Hard disc The high-capacity hard di scdisc is the answer to your storage needs. This is where your programs and data are stored.
1 Getting to know your TravelMate 24 English Using software Playing DVD movies When the DVD-ROM drive module is in stalled i n the optica l drive b ay, you can play DVD movies on your computer. 1 Eject the DVD tray and insert a DV D movie disc; then close the DVD tray.
25 English Audio The computer comes with 16-bit high -fidelity AC'97 ste r eo audio, an d dual stereo speakers. Adjusting the volume Adjusting the volume on the comput er is as easy as pressing some buttons. See "Ho t keys" on page 17 for more information on adjusting the speaker volume.

Disconnecting from the desktop Follow these step s to disconnect your computer from external accessorie s: 1 Save your work in progress.

When you are ready to use the comp uter again, unla tch and open the display; then press and release the power button. To use the network feature, conn ect an Ethernet cable from the network jack on the r ear of the co mputer to a network jack or hub on your network.
