9 Getting started 9 W all mounting The base can be installed on any standar d wall phone outlet as shown below . Choose a location a wa y from electr onic equipment, such as personal computers, computer rout- ers, television sets or micro wa ve o vens.

T o make a call, press PHONE or SPEAKER , then dial a number . Press OFF to hang up . T o pre view numbers bef ore dialing, enter numbers first, then press PHONE or SPEAKER to dial.
12 T elephone operation 12 Basic operation Handset locator If y ou misplac e the h andset( s), pre ss HAND SET LOCA TOR at the base. This starts the paging tone at the ha ndset(s ) for 60 seco nds to help y ou locate it.
13 T elephone operation 13 Options while on calls V olume control Press V or ^ on the VOLUME button on the side of the handset to adjust listening volume. Each button press raises or lo wers v olume by one le vel. When you change the v olume level, the new setting is sa ved.
14 T elephone operation 14 Options while on calls Mute Press MUTE to silence the micr ophone . Y ou will be able to hear the person at the other end, but they will not be able to hear you until y ou press MUTE again and resume speaking. T emporar y ring silencing Press OFF or MUTE while the phone is ringing to silence the ringer temporarily .
15 T elephone operation 15 Inter com calls Intercom calls If you ha ve mor e than one handset, you can use the inter com feature to ha ve con versations betw een the handsets. • Press the INTERCOM button on a handset. • Y ou will see INTERCOM T O: • Enter the handset number of the handset y ou want to call.
16 T elephone operation 16 Call forwar d Call forward If you ha ve mor e than one handset, during a conversa- tion, you can forwar d an external call from one handset to another handset. • Press and hold INTERCOM . Y ou will see FOR W ARD T O: • Enter the handset number (1, 2, 3, or 4) to which you want to forwar d the call.
17 T elephone operation Call transfer Call transfer If you ha ve mor e than one handset, during a conversa- tion you can transf er a call to another handset. • Press INTERCOM (the external call is put on hold). Y ou will see TRANSFER T O : • Enter the handset number (1, 2, 3, or 4) to which you want to transf er the call.
18 T elephone operation 18 Handset settings Using the featur e menu you can change settings to customize how the telephone w orks. Press MENU , then use the V^ buttons to scr oll to the featur e you want to change. As you scr oll through the menu, the top menu item is alwa ys highlighted with a > s ym bol .
19 T elephone operation Handset settings Languag e At this menu y ou can select the language used in all menus and scr een displa ys. Use the V^ buttons to select ENGLISH, SP ANISH or FRENCH, then press SELECT to sa ve y our prefer ence .
20 Directory Shared dir ector y The directory is stored in the base, and is shared b y all handsets. Changes made at any one handset will be reflected in all. NOTE: Only one handset can review the directory at a time. If another handset attempts to enter the directory , it will display NOT A V AILABLE A T THIS TIME.

25 Caller ID log Shared caller ID lo g The caller ID log is stored in the base, and is shared by all handsets. Changes made at any one handset will be reflected in all.
26 Caller ID log About names Names of callers will be displa yed only if the informa- tion is pro vided by y our local telephone company . If the telephone number of the person calling exactly matches a number in y our directory , the name that appears on scr een will match the name as you enter ed it into your dir ector y .

28 A ns w er in g s y st e m o pe r at io n Messag e capacity The answ ering system can recor d up to 99 messages, depending on the length of each message. Individual messages can be up to four minutes long, and total maximum r ecording time is 15 minutes.

30 Answering system operation 30 Outgoing announcements Outgoing announcements ar e the messages callers hear when calls are ans wer ed by the answ ering system. The phone is pre-pr ogrammed with announcements for normal (answ er and recor d) mode and for announce- ment only mode (see page 31).

If you ha ve ne w messages, you will hear onl y the new messages (oldest first). If there are no ne w messages, the system will pla y back all messages (oldest first).
34 Answering system operation 34 Recording and pla ying memos Memos are messages y ou record y ourself. They are sa ved, pla yed back and deleted exactly lik e incoming mes- sages. Y ou can recor d a memo as a reminder to y ourself, or lea ve a message f or someone else if others in your household use the answ ering system.

36 Answering system operation 36 1 . Remote access A two-digit security code is r equired to access your answ ering system from an y touch-tone phone . This code is 19 by default; see page 32 to change it. Dial your telephone number from any touch-tone phone.

41 Appendix Adding ne w handsets Y our telephone can accommodate up to four cordless handsets. Y ou can add ne w handsets (E597-2, sold separately) to the E5933B/E5934B at any time, but each handset must be r egistered with the base bef ore use. The E5933B has three handsets automaticall y register ed as handset 1, 2 and 3.
42 Appendix If you ar e replacing a handset on a system that has the maximum number of r egistered handsets (four) or wish to change the assigned handset number of y our registered handsets, you must first de-r egister the handsets, then re-register all handsets.

44 Appendix Appendix CONNECTING... displays on my cordless handset • Ensure that the base is powered up. • Place the cordless handset in the charger for one minute to allow the cordless handset and base to r esynchronize channels. • Move the cordless handset closer to the base.
45 Appendix T r oubleshooting I get noise, static, or weak signal even when I’m near the base • Other cordless phones and 802.11 wireless routers that ar e used for home computer networks both use internal radios to communicate.
46 Appendix T r oubleshooting My cordless handset does not ring when I receive a call • Make sure that the ringer is not turned off. Refer to the section(s) on ringer selection in this user’ s manual. • Make sur e the telephone line cord is plugged securely into the base unit and the telephone jack.
47 Appendix T r oubleshooting • Relocate your telephone base to a higher location. The phone will have better reception when not installed in a low ar ea. • If the other phones in your home are having the same problem, the problem is in your wiring or local service.
48 Appendix Incomplete messages • If a caller leaves a very long message, part of it may be lost when the system disconnects the call after four minutes. • If the caller pauses for more than seven seconds, the system stops recor ding and disconnects the call.
