2600-A2-GN20-40 March 2005 1-1 1 Installation Overview The BitStorm ® 2600 is a family of stacka ble IP DSLAMs designed for installa tion in a Central Office (CO), multi-tenant uni t (MTU), multi-dw e lling unit (MDU), or remote terminal en vironment.

1. Installation 1-10 March 2005 2600-A2-GN20-40 Installing the BitSto rm 2600 on a Wall Wall mounting requir es two wo od screws suitable for the weight of the fully cable d unit. These are not included. Use at a mi nimum 1/4-inch (6 mm) diameter screws in 3/4-inch (19 mm ) plywood (n ot drywall).
1. Installation 2600-A2-GN20-40 March 2005 1-11 6. Install two wood screws (not provided) at the same height abo ve the floor and 18.75 inches (476.2 5 mm ) apart. Do not completely tighten the scr ews. Leave them so their heads are about 1/4 inch (6 mm) from the wall.

2. Cabling 2-2 March 2005 2600-A2-GN20-40 DSL Ports The BitStorm 2600 DSL connecto r supports the tip and ring connections of up to 24 DSL ports ove r a 50-position ca ble. A POTS (plain old telephone se rvice) splitter connector is a lso provided, for CO applications only.
2. Cabling 2600-A2-GN20-40 March 2005 2-3 4. Tighten the cable tie around the connector and trim the excess. 5. If you use an internal POTS splitter, repeat Step 1 through Step 4 , substituting POTS 1–24 for DSL PORTS 1 –24. 6. Secure the ca bles as required for str ain relief.
2. Cabling 2-4 March 2005 2600-A2-GN20-40 2. Connect the other end of the uplin k cable to the uplink interface, such as an Ethernet switch. 3. Port 3 (eth3) is the default uplink. If you have changed the default, use the configure uplink CLI command or the Configuration / Uplink scree n of the web interface to specify eth3 as the uplink port.
2. Cabling 2600-A2-GN20-40 March 2005 2-5 T1 or E1 Uplink Models that support T1 or E1 have eigh t ports that can be used in any combination to provide PPP or MLPPP uplinks. Procedure To use T1 or E1 uplinks: 1. Use the CLI or web interface to configure PPP or MLPPP paths.
2. Cabling 2-6 March 2005 2600-A2-GN20-40 Chaining BitStorm 2600s Up to eight BitStorm 2600s can be chained tog ether to use a single uplink. The same port (eth2 o r eth3) used a s the uplink for one unit must be used as th e downlink for the next.
2. Cabling 2600-A2-GN20-40 March 2005 2-7 Management Port Port 1 can be used to connect the BitStor m 2600 to a network management system using a 10BaseT or 100BaseT LAN. A straight-thro ugh cable can be used regardless of the destination interface, si nce the port automatically dis tinguishes between an MDI and an MDIX.
2. Cabling 2-8 March 2005 2600-A2-GN20-40 Console Port The CONSOLE port normally ser ves as the primary user interface with the BitStorm 2600 during installation . You can connect a terminal or PC directly to the CONSOLE port using a DTE cable (see proce dure below).
2. Cabling 2600-A2-GN20-40 March 2005 2-9 Connecting a Modem to the Console Port Procedure To connect a modem to the CONSOLE port: 1. Determin e and procure th e proper DCE cab le type for your modem . The CONSOLE port requires a DB9 plug con n ector.
2. Cabling 2-10 March 2005 2600-A2-GN20-40 Alarm Interface The ALARM inte rface consis ts of five c ontacts. Thre e of the co ntacts provid e access to alarm relays that that can be used to set off Major and Minor physical alarms.
2. Cabling 2600-A2-GN20-40 March 2005 2-11 Ground Procedure To connect the unit to a grou nd: 1. Crimp a ring terminal onto th e stri pped end of 14 AWG or heavie r copper ground wire. 2. Remove the screw marked by th e ground symbol ( ) at the right side of the front panel.
2. Cabling 2-12 March 2005 2600-A2-GN20-40 Connecting to Power The BitStorm 2600 can be powered by any AC power source su pplying 90–265 VAC at 47–63 Hz. Procedure To connect the BitStorm 2600 to a po wer source: 1. Insert the supplied power cord into the po wer socket on the back of the unit.

3. LEDs 3-2 March 2005 2600-A2-GN20-40 LED Meanings When power is first applied to the unit, it performs a powe r-on self-test. When this test is successfully complete d, the Status LED blinks. The meaning of all the LEDs is shown in Table 3-1, Front Pane l LEDs .
2600-A2-GN20-40 March 2005 4-1 4 Configuration Overview The BitStorm 2600 is designed to require minimal configuration before it can be accessed by a Network Operations Center (NOC). When the BitStorm 2600 is first powered up it is a fully functional bridge, and all DSL ports are set to their maximum speed.
4. Configuration 4-2 March 2005 2600-A2-GN20-40 Using the CLI A command line interface (CLI) ca n be used to configure and monitor the unit. The CLI is available from a PC or terminal connected to the Cons ole port, or from a Telnet session with the device.

4. Configuration 4-4 March 2005 2600-A2-GN20-40 BitStorm 2600 St artup Procedure You can initialize your BitStorm 2600 via a PC or te rminal connected to the unit’s CONSOLE port.
4. Configuration 2600-A2-GN20-40 March 2005 4-5 Startup Procedure fo r Inband Management With inband management, the BitStorm 2600 is mana ged using the uplink port. Procedure To start up the BitStorm 2600 using inband manageme nt: 1. Specify the uplink port using the configure uplink command.
4. Configuration 4-6 March 2005 2600-A2-GN20-40 Using the Web Interface To access the web interf ace: Procedure 1. Open yo ur web brow ser. (Inter net Explorer Version 6 or above is recommended.) 2. Type http:// and the IP address of the BitStorm 2600 into the Address field of your browser window.
4. Configuration 2600-A2-GN20-40 March 2005 4-7 System / Users For security reasons, it is a good idea to change the default passwo rd the first time you use the syst em. Procedure To change th e default passwo rd for user admin : 1. Click on the System menu tab, then click on U s ers.

The read-only community string is public , and the read -write string is private . Community stri ngs, network management system addre sses, and trap manager addresses can be set using the System/Management/SNMP screen.
