6 POWERING THE SCP-8 4 You can po wer your SCP-84 f rom an y of t hree power sources: • Internal batteries (not supplied) • Standard AC power (with an optional AC adapter) • Y our v ehicle’s cigarette-lighter sock et (with an optional DC adap ter) Note: Connec ting an op t io nal adapter di s conn ects inter- nal batteries.
7 Cautions: • D o not mix ol d and new batteries, different types of batteries (s tandard, alkaline, a nd nickel-cadmiu m), or recharge able batteries of different capaciti es in the SCP-84 . • U se only fresh batteries of the required size and type.
8 Cautio ns: • Never leav e dead or we ak batt eries in the SC P-84. • If you do not plan to us e th e SCP -84 for a mont h or more, or if you plan to us e only A C or vehicle bat tery power , remove t he bat teries. • Dispose of batteri es prompt ly and prope rly; do n ot bury or burn th em.
9 Cautions: • T he recommende d AC adapt er supp lies 3 volts and de livers at leas t 300 milliamps . Its cent er tip is set to negati ve, and its plug correctly fi ts th e DC 3 V jack on the b ottom of th e SCP -84. Using an adapter that does not meet these speci fications could dam age the SCP -84 or the adapter .

11 • A lways plug the DC adapter ’s barrel plug into the SCP -84 before you plug its power module into y our vehicle’s cigarette-lighter socket, and unplug its power mo dule from y our vehicle’s cigarette-lighter’s socket before you unplug it s barrel plug from the SCP-84 .
12 Note: I f the SCP-84 does not operate whe n you turn it on, remov e the DC adapter f rom your v ehicle’s c igarette- lighter socket an d check the socket for d ebris. Also, check the fuse in the adapter and your vehicle’s fuse block. SETTI NG THE CLOCK 1.

14 SETTING THE 9KHZ /10KHZ SWIT CH The 9kHz/10kHz swi t ch on the ba c k of th e cassette com- partment door is preset to 10kHz . In the 10kHz setting, the SC P -84 tunes frequen cies in in- crements of 10 kHz (AM) and 0.1 MHz (FM), which is standard i n the United States.
15 CONNECT ING HEADPH ONES OR AMPLIFIED SP EAKERS To listen t o the SCP-84, y ou need a pair of headph ones or amplified s peakers with a 1 / 8 -inch plu g. Your lo cal Ra- dioS hack store carries a wide selection of headphones and am plified s peakers.
16 Liste ning Safe ly To protect your h earing, follo w these guidelin es when you u se hea dphones. • Set the volume to t he lowes t setting bef ore you b egin listening. After you begin listening, adjust the volume to a comfortable level. • Do not listen at extremely high v olume levels.
17 USING THE RADIO LIST ENING TO THE R ADIO Importa nt: Make sure you have c onnec ted headph ones or speakers t o the SCP-84. See “Connecting He ad- phones or Amplified Speakers ” on P age 15. 1. Set RADI O STEREO/MONO/T APE to STEREO for ste- reo sou nd on FM stations.

19 Notes: • The SC P-84 has a built-in AM antenna, and the headphone s’ or speakers’ cord serves as an FM antenn a. For the best AM reception, rotate the SCP -84. F or the be st FM rec eption, fully uncoil th e headphone s’ or speakers’ cord.
20 ST O RING RADIO ST A TIONS IN MEM OR Y You can store up to 20 radio st ations (1 0 FM and 10 A M) in memory . Then you can qu ickly tune t o the stored s ta- tion by pressing a m emory b utton (or +5 and a memo ry button). Follow these steps to s tore stations in memory.
21 Note: If you do not press a memory location but ton or +5 within about 1 0 seconds, M disappea rs from th e display . St art again fro m Step 4. 5. T o store stations into me mory locations 1-5, while M flashes on t he display , pre ss a memory location but- ton ( 1-5 ) to st ore the current fre quency in t hat mem - ory location.
22 6. T une to the next station you want to store, then repeat St eps 4 and 5. To replace a station you stored, simply store a new st a- tion in that mem ory location. USING LOCK You can lock the radi o to prevent either accidentally changing the station you are listening to or r e placing a stored station.
23 USIN G THE CASSE TTE PLA Y ER PLA YING A CASSE TTE T APE Make s ure that you h ave c onnected h eadphon es or spea kers to t he SCP-84 . See “Connecting Headphones or Amplified Sp eakers” on Page 15. Caution: W e do not recomme nd using C-120 cassette tapes.
24 3. Pull open the cassette compart men t door . 4. Slide the casse tte tape into the guides in the cassette compartment door with the tape’s open edge facing out, th e side you wan t to hea r facing up, and the f ull reel on the l e ft. Then close the door .

27 USIN G THE ALARM You can set the SCP-84 to au tomatically sound a beep- ing a larm at a t ime you select. SETTI N G THE ALARM TI ME 1. Set RADIO STEREO/MONO/T APE to TA P E . The dis- play s hows the currently set time. 2. Press MODE onc e. AL appears, and the cu rrently set alarm time flashes.

29 CARE AND MAINTENANCE Your O ptimus SCP-84 A uto Reverse AM/FM Stereo Cas- sette Pl ayer is an example of superior design and craf ts- manship . The following suggestions will help you care for the SC P-84 so you can enjoy it for years. Keep the SCP -84 dry.
30 Modifying or tampering with t he SC P-84’s internal com- ponents can caus e a m al function and m ight in va lidate its warranty and void y our FCC aut horization to ope rate it. If your SCP -84 is not p erforming as it should , take it to your local RadioShack store for a ssistance.
31 CLEANING THE T APE-HANDLI NG P ART S Dirt, dust , or particles of the t ape’s coating can accum u- late o n the tape heads an d other parts that the tape touches. This can greatly reduce the performance of the SCP- 84. Use the following clea ning procedure after ev- ery 20 hours of operation.
32 REST ORING T APE TENSION AND SOUND QUAL ITY After you p lay a cassette sev eral times, t he tape m ight become t ightly wound on t he reels. This can caus e play- back soun d qu ality to deteriorate. To restore the sound qu ality, fast-forward the tape f rom the beginning to the end of one s ide, then complete ly re- wind it.
