6 Intr oduction Make sure you ha ve the following accessories: The letter displayed at the end of the product name found in catalogs and on package represents the color of the D V-SP305 D VD player . Though the color varies, the spe cif ications and operations are the same.
7 Intr oduction —Continued Supported Discs The D V-SP305 supports the follo wing discs. • Some audio CDs feature copy protection that doesn’ t conform to the of ficial CD st andard. Since these are nonstandard discs, they may not play properly in the D V-SP305.

10 Bef ore Using the D V-SP305 Notes: • If the remote controlle r doesn’t work rel iably , try replacing both batteries. • Don’t mix ne w and old batter ies, or different types of batteries. • If you intend not to use the remote controller for a long time, remove the batteries t o pre vent possible leaka ge and corrosion.

13 Fr ont & Rear P anels —Continued CO AXIAL DIGIT AL A UDIO OUTPUT [20] This coaxial digital audio output can be connected to a coaxial digital audio input on a hi-fi amp, A V receiv er , or surround sound decoder (Dolby Digital, DTS).
14 Front & Rear P anels —Continued ST ANDBY button [21] This button is used to set the D V-SP305 to Standb y . ON button [21] This button is used to turn on the D V-SP305. Don’t turn on the D V-SP305 until you’ ve com- pleted, and double checked all connections (pages 16–20).
15 Fr ont & Rear P anels —Continued (2 Fast Forwar d /( ) button [25, 28, 29] This button is used for fa st forward, slow motion, and frame-by-frame playback. (3 OPEN/CLOSE button [24] This button is used to open and close the disc tray . (4 PLA Y MODE button [32–35] This button is used to open and close the Play Mode menu.

17 Connecting the D V -SP305 —Contin ued The setup described here is a basic setup that allo ws you to play discs using just the supplied A V cable (RCA). In this setup, stereo audio is played throu gh the speakers in your TV . Important: • This player is equipped with cop y protection technol- ogy .
18 Connecting the D V-SP305 —Contin ued Switching the video out put to interlace using the f ront pa nel contro ls Switch the player to standby then, using the front panel controls, press ST ANDBY/ON while pressing to switch the player bac k to Interlace.
19 Connecting the D V -SP305 —Contin ued • Connect the D VD Player to the TV directly . If you connect the D VD Player to a VCR, TV/VCR combi- nation, or video selector , the playback picture may be distorted as D VD videos are copy protected.
20 Connecting the D V-SP305 —Contin ued Although you can reproduce the D VD Player’ s sound from the TV speakers with the connections on page 17, connecting with an amplifier pro vides you high quality dynamic sounds.
21 Connecting the P o wer/T urning on the D V-SP305 Befor e connecting • Make sure that all the connections on pages 16–20 are complete (the connection to a T V is required). Note: • This player features a scre en s a ver and an auto po wer off function.
22 Getting Star ted For ease of use, this player makes ex tensiv e use of graph- ical on-screen displays (OSDs). All the screens are na vigated in basically the same way , u s i n g t h e c u r s o r (///) b u t t o n s t o c h a n g e t h e highlighted item and pressing ENTER to select it.
23 Getting Started —Continued This sets the language of this system’ s on-screen dis- plays. Setting the language of this pla yer’ s on-screen displa ys 1 Press SETUP and select “Initial Settings”. 2 Select “OSD Language” from the “Display” settings.
24 Getting Star ted —Contin ued The basic playback controls for playing D VD, CD, V ideo CD, DivX V ideo and MP3/WMA discs are cov- ered here. Further functions are de tailed in the ne xt chap- ter . For details on playing JPEG picture discs, see “V iewing a JPEG slideshow” on page 29.
25 Getting Started —Continued The table below sho ws the basic controls on the remote for playing discs. The foll owing chapter cov ers other playback features in more detail. When you stop playback of a disc, RESUME is shown in the display indicating that you can resume playback again from that point.
26 Getting Star ted —Contin ued Many D VD-V ideo discs feature menus from which you can select what you w ant to watch. They may also giv e access to additional features, such as subtitle and audio language selection, or special features such as slide- show s.
27 Getting Started —Continued Hint: • After I load a D VD disc, it eject s automatically after a few se conds! o Most likely , the disc is the wrong region for your player . The region number should be printed on the disc; check it against the region number of the player (which you can find on the rear panel).
28 Pla ying discs Notes: • Many of the functions co vered in this chapter apply to D VD discs, V ideo CDs, CDs, DivX V ideo and MP3/ WMA/JPEG discs, although the exact operation of some v aries slightly with the kind of disc loaded.
29 Playing discs —Contin ued Y ou can advance or back up D VD discs frame-by-frame. W ith V ideo CD you can only use frame advance. Note: • Backward frame-b y-frame playback does not work with V ideo CD. After loading a CD/CD-R/R W containing JPEG picture files, press (play) to sta rt a slidesho w from the first folder/picture on the disc.
30 Playing discs —Contin ued Use the “Disc Navig ator” to browse through the contents of a D VD or V ideo CD disc to f ind the part you want to play . Important: • Y ou can’t use the “Disc Navig ator” with V ideo CD in PBC mode. Tip: • Another way to find a particular place on a disc is to use one of the search modes.
31 Playing discs —Contin ued Use the “Disc Navigator” to find a particular file or folder by f ilename. Note that if there are other types of files on the same disc, these will not b e displayed in the “Disc Navig ator”.
32 Playing discs —Contin ued The “A-B Repeat ” function allo ws you to spec ify two points (A and B) within a track (CD, V ideo CD) or title (D VD) that form a loop which is played over an d over . • Y ou can’t use “A-B Repeat” with V ideo CD in PBC mode, or WMA/MP3/Di vX V ideo files.
33 Playing discs —Contin ued Use the random play function to p lay titles or chapters (D VD-V ideo) or tracks (CD, V ideo CD) at random. (Note that the same track/title /chapter may play more than once.) Y ou can set the random play option when a disc is play- ing or stopped.
34 Playing discs —Contin ued This feature lets you program the play order of titles/ chapters/tracks on a disc. Important: • Y ou can’t use Program play with VR format D VD-R W discs, V ideo CD playing in PBC mode, WMA/MP3 discs, or while a DVD disc menu is being displayed.
35 Playing discs —Contin ued There are a number of other options in the “Program” menu in addition to “Create/Edit”. • Playback Start – Starts playback of a sa ved program list • Playb.
36 Playing discs —Contin ued Some D VD or Di vX V ideo discs have su btitles in one or more languages; the disc box will usually tell you which subtitle languages are av ailable. Y ou can switch subtitle language during playback. • See “Displaying DivX sub title files” on page 8 for more on DivX subtitle.
37 Playing discs —Contin ued Using the zoom feature you can magnify a part of the screen by a factor of 2 or 4, while w atching a DVD, Di vX V ideo title or V ideo CD, or playing a JPEG disc. Some D VD discs feature scenes shot from two or more angles—check the disc box for details.
38 A udio Settings and Video Adjust menus The “Audio Settings” menu of fers features for adjusting the way discs sound. • Settings: “Rock”, “Pop”, “Li ve”, “Dance”, “T echno”, “Classic”, “Soft”, “O f f (default)” The vario us preset EQ curves are designed to suit vari- ous styles of music.
39 A udio Settings and Video Adjust menus —Contin ued From the “V ideo Adjust” screen you can adjust various settings that affect how the picture is presented. Note: • Depending on your TV , the picture may appear dis- torted if the brightness is set too high.
40 Initial Settings menu The “Initial Settings” menu provides audio and video output settings, parental lock sett ings, and display set- tings, among others. If an option is grayed out it means that it cannot be changed at the current time. This is usually because a disc is playing.
41 Initial Settings menu —Contin ued Digital A udio Out settings Setting Option What it means Digital Out On Digital audio is output from the digital outputs. Off No digital audio output. Dolby Digital Out Dolby Digital Dolby Digital encoded digital audio is output when playing a Dolb y Digital D VD disc.
42 Initial Settings menu —Continued Video Output settings Setting Option What it mean s TV Screen (See also “Screen sizes and disc formats” on page 47.) 4:3 (Letter Box) Set if you ha ve a conv entional 4:3 TV . Widescreen movies are shown with b lack bars top and bottom.
43 Initial Settings menu —Contin ued Language settings Setting Option What it means Audio Language *1 *1 This setting is your pre ferred audio language for DVD discs. You can switch between the languages recorded on a DVD disc during playback using the AUDIO button.

46 Initial Settings menu —Continued In order to play Di vX V OD (video on demand) content on this player , you f irst need to register the player with your Di vX V OD content provider . Y ou do this by gener- ating a DivX V OD registration code, which you submit to your pro vider .
47 Additional inf ormation D VD-V ideo discs come in several dif f er ent screen aspect ratios, ranging from TV programs, which are generally 4:3, to CinemaScope widescreen mov ies, with an aspect ratio of up to about 7:3. T elevisions, too, come in differen t aspect ratios; “stan- dard” 4:3 and widescreen 16:9.
48 Additional inf ormation —Continued Note: • Y ou have to switch the player into standby (press ST ANDBY/ON) before each change. D VD discs are generally di vided into one or more titles. T itles may be further subdi vided into chapters. CDs and V ideo CDs are di vided into tracks.

50 Glossary Analog audio An electrical signal that directly represents sound. Com- pare this to digital audio which can be an elect rical sig- nal, but is an indirect representation of sound. See also “Digital audio”. Aspect ratio The width of a TV screen relati ve to its height.
51 Glossary —Continued Progressive scan video All the lines that make up a video picture are updated in one pass (compared to interlace which tak es two passes to update the whole picture). Regions (D VD-Video only) These associate discs and players with par ticular areas of the world.
52 T r oubleshooting If you hav e any trouble using your D V-SP305, check the follo wing table for possible causes and remedies. If you still can’t resolv e the issue yourself, please contact your Onkyo dealer . Symptoms Causes Remedies DV D P l aye r Can’t turn on the D V-SP305? The power cord is not connected.
53 T roubleshooting —Contin ued DV D P l aye r No sound? The “96 kHz PCM Out” setting is set to “96kHz”. Change the “96 kHz PCM Out” setting to “96kHz > 48kHz”, or use analog connections (page 41). The “Digital Out” setting is set to “O f f”.
54 T roubleshooting —Continued Note: • Static electricity or other ext ernal influences may cau se malfunctioning of this unit. In this case, unplug the p ower cord and then plug back in. Th is will usually reset the unit for proper operation. If this does not correct the problem, please consult your nearest our customer center .
