5 Handling, safet y , and environmental guidelines Before installin g your GBIC, read the follo wing handlin g, safety , and envi ronmental g uidelines: • GBICs are static sens itive. T o prevent damage from electrostat ic discharge (ESD), follow your no rmal board and com ponent hand ling pro cedure s.
6 2 V erify that the GBIC i s the correct model for your network config uration ( T abl e 1 on page 4 ). 3 Remove the dust cover from the GBIC ’ s optical bores. 4 Grasp the GBIC between you r thumb and forefi nger . 5 Insert the GBIC i nto the sl ot on the fro nt pan el of the Giga bit Etherne t swit ching modul e (Figure 3) .

When you store a SFP GBIC, or when yo u disconn ect it from a f iber optic cable, al ways keep the dust cov er over the SFP GBIC ’ s optical bores. • T o clean contam inants from the opt ical bores of a SFP G BIC, use an alco hol swab or equival ent to clean the ferrules of the optical connector.
