Using the 8-port TokenSpeed and TokenSpeed/MCP Switch Modules 2-2 893-01019-A Figure 2-1 shows a netw ork with a server connected to the netw ork, first through a shared-media hub and then through a T okenSpeed module in a Centillion 50 T oken Ring W orkgroup Switch.
TokenSpeed Module Applications 893-01019-A 2-3 Connecting a Segment Thr ough the RI or RO P or t Figure 2-2 shows a netw ork with IBM 8228-style media attachment units (MA Us) forming a single ring segment. Y ou can create two ring segments by connecting one MA U to a T okenSpeed module through the RI or R O port on the MA U.
Using the 8-port TokenSpeed and TokenSpeed/MCP Switch Modules 2-4 893-01019-A Connecting a Segment Using a Lobe P or t Figure 2-3 shows a netw ork with three stacked tok en ring hubs forming a single ring segment. Each hub can be connected through a lobe port to a T okenSpeed module to create three ring segments.
TokenSpeed Module Applications 893-01019-A 2-5 Replacing a Sour ce Route Bridge or Router Figure 2-4 shows a netw ork in which a Centillion switch replaces three source route bridges.
Using the 8-port TokenSpeed and TokenSpeed/MCP Switch Modules 2-6 893-01019-A Figure 2-5 shows a netw ork where each ring segment uses a separate router port. By using a T okenSpeed module in a Centillion switch, you can concentrate man y physical ring segments into a fe w logical rings that use fewer router ports.

Using the 8-port TokenSpeed and TokenSpeed/MCP Switch Modules 3-2 893-01019-A Installing the T okenSpeed Module Y ou can insert or remov e a T okenSpeed module from a switch chassis while the po wer is on without interrupting service in the other installed modules.
Installing and Connecting the TokenSpeed Module 893-01019-A 3-3 b . Rotate the left and right inserter/extractor levers away fr om the center of the filler panel to release the filler panel fr om the chassis frame, and lift the filler panel away from the switch (see Figur e 3-1 ).
Using the 8-port TokenSpeed and TokenSpeed/MCP Switch Modules 3-4 893-01019-A 3. Align the left and right edges of the module in the guides on each side of the slot (see Figur e 3-3 ). Figure 3-3. Slot module guides 4. Slide the module into the chassis until y ou feel it touch the backplane (see Figur e 3-4 ).
Installing and Connecting the TokenSpeed Module 893-01019-A 3-5 5. T o seat the module against the backplane, r otate the inserter/extractor lev ers inward toward each other (see Figur e 3-5 ).
Using the 8-port TokenSpeed and TokenSpeed/MCP Switch Modules 3-6 893-01019-A T oken Ring Connections When you connect a network de vice to a token ring port on the T okenSpeed module, you must specify a T okenSpeed port type using SpeedV iew .
Installing and Connecting the TokenSpeed Module 893-01019-A 3-7 Management Connection A serial connection for a SpeedV ie w network management station is provided on the T okenSpeed/MCP module. The cable for this connection is shipped with the Centillion switch.
Using the 8-port TokenSpeed and TokenSpeed/MCP Switch Modules 3-8 893-01019-A T okenSpeed Module LEDs The T okenSpeed module has status LEDs to indicate operating conditions for each port (see Figure 3-8 ). Figure 3-8. T okenSpeed module LEDs T able 3-2 lists the meaning of each LED on the T okenSpeed module.
Installing and Connecting the TokenSpeed Module 893-01019-A 3-9 • Port 2: — Act LED lights when software is loaded from flash memory . — Ins LED lights when software loading is complete and the system be gins ex ecuting. • All LEDs turn of f when the module has started up successfully .
Using the 8-port TokenSpeed and TokenSpeed/MCP Switch Modules 3-10 893-01019-A If the factory default settings are not appropriate for your netw ork, you may be able to use one of the predefined switch configurations that are av ailable in SpeedV ie w .
Installing and Connecting the TokenSpeed Module 893-01019-A 3-11 Predefined configurations are av ailable for the following applications: • All transparent switching with no spanning tree support • All transparent bridging with IEEE 802.
Using the 8-port TokenSpeed and TokenSpeed/MCP Switch Modules 3-12 893-01019-A Replacing a T okenSpeed/MCP Module T o replace a T okenSpeed/MCP module in a chassis, follo w these steps: 1. Notify network users that the network will be out of ser vice, and advise them to sa ve all work and log out of acti ve sessions.
Installing and Connecting the TokenSpeed Module 893-01019-A 3-13 6. Slide the module out of the chassis (see Figure 3-10 ). Figure 3-10. Removing the module fr om the switch chassis 7. If y ou will not be r eplacing the module soon, attach a filler panel ov er the empty slot.
Using the 8-port TokenSpeed and TokenSpeed/MCP Switch Modules 3-14 893-01019-A Replacing a T okenSpeed Module Y ou do not need to turn off the switch po wer before you replace a T okenSpeed module that does not hav e an MCP . T o replace a T okenSpeed module, follo w these steps: 1.
Installing and Connecting the TokenSpeed Module 893-01019-A 3-15 4. Rotate the left and right inserter/extractor lev ers away from the center of the module to loosen the module from the backplane connectors (see Figur e 3-11 ). 5. Slide the module out of the chassis (see Figure 3-12 ).

893-01019-A 4-1 Chapter 4 T r oubleshooting the T okenSpeed Module This chapter provides suggestions for troubleshooting the T okenSpeed module. This chapter cov ers the following topics: • Switch s.
Using the 8-port TokenSpeed and TokenSpeed/MCP Switch Modules 4-2 893-01019-A Switch Startup Failure with T okenSpeed/MCP Symptom: The startup process halts, and the module LEDs remain lit. If the code image stored in flash memory becomes corrupted, the checksum fails during reset.
Troubleshooting the TokenSpeed Module 893-01019-A 4-3 9. Click on the Start button in the Softwar e Download dialog box. If the display returns to the Main Menu instead of displaying the “Writing to Flash” message, the do wnload process did not complete successfully .
Using the 8-port TokenSpeed and TokenSpeed/MCP Switch Modules 4-4 893-01019-A P or t Inser tion Prob lems Symptom: The Act LED on a token ring port does not flash for a period of 15 to 20 seconds. No flashing on the Act L ED on a token ring port typically indicates port insertion problems.
Troubleshooting the TokenSpeed Module 893-01019-A 4-5 • Port speed and speed sensing are configured appropriately . – If the port speed is not set to Auto, and Speed Sense is disabled, the port is forced to operate at a particular speed. V erify that the configured speed matches the actual speed of the ring.
