EMERGENCY C ALLS Ensure the phone funct ion of the device is switched on and in serv ice. Press the end key as many times as needed to c lear the display and return to the standby mode.

Get started Model number: Nokia E51-1 (RM-244, with camera) and Nokia E51-2 (RM-426, without camera). Hereinafter referred to as Nokia E51. Insert the SIM card and battery For availability and inform ation on using SIM card services, contact your SIM card v endor .
5. Slide the back cover back to place. Charge the battery 1. Connect a compatible charger to a wall outlet. 2. Connect the power cord to the device. If th e battery is completely disch arged, it may ta ke a while before the charging indicator starts scrolling.

You can switch the device on with no SIM card inserted, in which case the device starts up in the offline mode, and you cannot use the network- dependent phone functions.

You have an on going push-to-talk connection. Your push-to-talk connect ion is in the do not disturb mode, because the ringing type setting of your device is set to Beep once or Silent , or you have an incoming or ongoing phone call. In this mode, you ca nnot make PTT calls.

If you are not able to use Settings wizard, vis it the Nokia phone settin gs web site. Standby modes Your device has two different standby modes: active standby mode and standby mode.
The menu is a star ting point from which you can open all applications in the device or on a memory card. The menu contains applica tions and folders, which are groups of similar applications. All applications you install in the device yourself are by default saved in the Installations folder .
To select different items, such as messages , files, or contacts, scroll to the item you want to select. Select Options > Mark/Unmark > Mark to select one item or Options > Mark/Unmark > Mark all to select all items.
Synchronise, retrieve, and send data If you have previously transferred da ta to your device with the Transfer application, select from the following icons in the Transfer main view: Synchronise data with a co mpatible device if the o ther device supports s ynchronisat ion.
Customise profiles Select Options > Personal ise , and define the following: • Ringing tone — Select a ringing tone from the list, or select Download sounds to open a bookmark folder containing a list of bookmarks for downloading tones using the browser.
3-D ringing tones Select Menu > Media > 3-D ringing tones . To enable three-dimensional sound effects for ringing tones, select 3-D ringi ng tone effects > On . Not all ringing tones su pport 3–D effects. To change the 3–D effect that is applied to the ringing tone, select Sound trajectory and the desired effect.
Leaving applications running in the background increases the demand on battery power and reduces the battery life. Contacts key To open the Contacts app lication, press the cont acts key briefly. To create a new contact, press t he contacts key for a few seconds.

To change the name of the memory card, select Options > Memory card name . You can protect a memory card with a password t o prevent unauthorised access . To set a passw ord, select Options > Set password . The password can be up to eight ch aracters long and is case-se nsitive.
To insert a space, press 0 . To move the cursor to the next line, press 0 three times. To switch between the differe nt character cases, press # . Predictive text input 1. To activate predicti ve text input, pr ess # twice quickly. This activates predictive text input for all editors in the device.
Further information Instructions in your device To read instructions for th e current view of the open application, select Options > Help . To browse the help topics and conduct searches, select Menu > Help > Help . You can select categories for which you want to see instructions.
Business communications Your device provides you with efficient tools for voice communication an d contact and time man agement. Teleph one To make and receive calls, the device must be switched on , the device must have a valid SIM card installed, and you must be located in the servic e area of a cellular network.

3. Enter the DTMF tone sequence, or selec t a predefined sequence. Attach a DTMF tone sequence to a contact card 1. Sele ct Menu > Contacts . Open a contact, and select Option s > Edit > Options > Add detail > DTMF . 2. Enter the tone sequence.
Make a call A voice tag for a contact is the na me or nickname that is saved on the contact in Contacts. Note: Using voice tags may be difficult in a noisy environment or during an emergency, so you should not rely solely upon voice dialing in all circumstances.
Log stores information about the communication history of the device. The device registers missed and received calls only if the network su pports th ese functions , the device is switched on and wi thin the network service area. Call and data registers To view recently missed, rece ived, and dialled calls, select Recent calls .
You can save and u pdate contact information, such as phone numbers, home addresses, or e-mail addresses of your contacts. You can add a personal ringi ng tone or a thumbnail image to a contact. You can a lso create contact groups, which allow you to s end text or e-mail mes sages to many recipients at the same time.
To change the display order of the first and last names of your contacts, select Op tions > Settings , and Last n ame First name , or First nam e Last nam e . Manage contact groups You can create a contact gr oup so that you can send messages to several recipients at the same time.
To view the list of fixed dialling numbers, select Opti ons > SIM contacts > Fixed dial contacts . This setting is only shown if supported by your SIM card. To restrict calls from your device to selected phone numbers, select Options > Activate fixed diall ing .
• Alarm — Set an alarm for meet ing and anniversary entries. The alarm is di splayed in the day view. • Repeat — Specify whether you want the entry to be repeated and when.
Create a to-do entry 1. Scroll to a date, and select Options > New entry > To-do . 2. Enter the subject in the Subject field. 3. Enter the due date. 4. To set an alarm for the to-do entry, select Alarm > On . Enter the alarm time and date. 5.
To mark a task as completed, select Optio ns > Mark as done . To restore a ta sk, select Options > Mark as not done . Calendar settings Select Optio ns > Settings . To change th e alarm tone, se lect Calendar alarm tone . To change the view disp layed when you open the calendar, select Default view .

Messaging Select Menu > Messaging . In Messag ing (network servic e), you can send and receive text messages, multimedia messages , audio messages, and e-mail messages. You can also receive web service messages, cell broadcast m essages, an d special mes sages containing data, and send service commands.
Organise messages To create a new folder to organise your messages, select My folders > Options > Ne w folder . To rename a folder, select Options > Rename folder . You can only rename folders that you have created. To move a message to another folder, select Options > Move to folder , the folder, and OK .

3. Enter the text of your message. T o use a template, select Options > Insert > Te mplate . 4. Sele ct Options > Send . Tip: To remove the picture from the message, select Options > Remove picture . Multimedia messages Select Menu > Messaging .
Receive and reply to multimedia messages Important: Exercise caution when opening messages. Me ssages may conta in malicious software or otherwise be harmful to your device or PC. Tip: If you receive multimedia messages that contain objects unsupported by your device, you cannot open them.
View presentations To view a presentation, op en the multimedia message from the Inbox folder. Scroll to the presentation, and press the scroll key. To pause the presentation, press either selection key. To resume playing the presentation , select Options > Continue .
Sending options for multimedia messages Select New message > Multimedia message > Options > Sending option s and from the following options: • Receive report — Selec t Yes if you want to receive a notification when the me ssage has been successfully delivered to the recipient.
For available topics and relev ant topic numbers, con tact your service provider. Cell broadcast messages cannot be received when the device is in the remote SIM mode. A packet data (GPRS) connection may prevent cell broadcast reception. Cell broadcast messages cannot be received in UMTS (3G) networks.
Select from the following: • Image s ize — Select Small or Large to scale images in multimedia messa ges. Select Original to maintain th e original image size.
• My name — Enter a name to appear before your e-ma il address when you send e-mail. • Reply-to — Select whether yo u want replies to be redirected to a different address. Select On , and enter the e-mail address to which you want to direct the replies.
To receive service messages fr om service providers, select Service messages > On . To select how to download services and service message content, select Options > Settings > Service message > Down load messages > Au tomatically or Manually .
Nokia Office Tools Nokia Office Tools support mobile business and en able effective communication with work teams. Active notes Select Menu > Office > Active note s . Active notes allows you to create, edit, and view different kinds of notes, for example, meeting memos, hobby notes, or shopping lists.
Search Select Menu > Office > Search . With Search, you can search for information in your contacts, notes, calenda r appointments, to-do notes , e- mail messages, multimedia me ssages, and text me ssages. You can also search for files by the file names in your device memory and memory card.
Open the device tab or the memory card tab. To select multiple files, sc roll to each file, and select Options > Mark/Unmark > Mark . To send the selected files, select Options > Send . To move or copy files or folders to another folder, select Options > Move to folder or Copy to folder .
To select an action, first select the team to which you w ant to apply the act ion, then scroll to the action bar, and select the desired action. If you do not want to apply the acti on to all team members, open the team, and select the desire d members.
To change the order of the action button s, select an action, and Options > Move up , Move down , Move to top , or Move to bottom . Tip: If you select not to show all action s in the action bar, you can still access the a ctions by selecting Options > Actions .
You can store the archive files on the device memory or on a memory card. PDF reader Select Menu > Office > Adobe Reader . With PDF reader you can read PDF documents on the display of your device; search for text in the documents; modify settings, such as zoom level and page views; a nd send PDF files using e-mail.
• Driver — Select a driver for the printer. • Bearer — Select a bearer for the printer. • Access point — Select the access point. • Port — Select the port. • Host — Define the host. • User — Enter the user. • Queue — Enter the print queue.
Notes Select Menu > Office > Notes . You can creat e and send notes to ot her compatible devices, and save received pl ain text files (.txt format) to Notes. Write and se nd notes To write a note, start enteri ng the text. The note editor opens automatically.
Free time Your device contains a variety of media applications for both business and leisure ti me usage. Camera This section describes the ca mera in your E51-1 (RM-244) devic e. Select Menu > Media > Camera . Capture an image Your device supports an image capture resolution of up to 1600x1200 pixels.
4. To stop the recording, select Stop . The device saves the clip in the default folder, or in the folder you have defined. 5. If you do not want to keep the saved video clip, s elect Options > Delete . Select Back to return to the viewfinder to record another video clip.
To rotate the image, select Opt ions > Ro tate . Select Right to rotate the image clockwise by 90 degrees, or select Left to rotate the image counterclockwise by 90 degrees. Manage image files To view detailed information about the image, select Options > View details .

To play the mu sic tracks repeat edly, select Options > Loop . Select All to repeat all the tracks in the current folder , One to repe at the selected track, or Off to s et off the repeating. To play music in random or der, select a folder and Options > Random play .
You can also press the voice key to open the Recorder application. If you have logged in to p ush to talk, the voice key works as a push-to-talk key and does not open Recorder. Record a sound clip To record a sound clip, select Options > Record s ound clip .
your device automatica lly logs in, select Options > Settings > Server settings > Default serve r . To define ho w your device co nnects to the IM server, select Options > Settings > Serve r settings > IM login type . To establish a connect ion between your device and the default server automatically, select Automatic .
To add an IM user to the group , select Options > Add member . Select a user from your IM contacts or enter the contact ID. To remove a member from the IM group, select Option s > Remove . To provide members with editing rights to the group , select Options > A dd editor .
Flash player Select Menu > Media > Flash Player . With Flash player, you can vi ew, play, and intera ct with flash files made for mobile devices. Manage flash files To optimise the use of Flash Player, insert a memory card in your device. To play a flash file, scroll to it, and press the scroll key.
View visual content To check availability a nd costs, and to subscribe to the service, contact your service provider. Before you can view visual co ntent, you m ust have an internet access point defined at Menu > Tools > Settings > Connection > Acce ss points .
PTT settings Select Optio ns > Settings and select User se ttings to define your preferences for PTT, or Connection settings to change the connecti on de tails. Contact your service provider for the correct settings. Tip: You may also receive the settin gs in a message from the provider of the PTT service.
Create a PTT channel To create a channe l, selec t Options > New channel > Create new . To register the channel to the PTT service, select Options > Register . To join a channel, select the channel you want to talk to, and press the voice key.
If your device cann ot find th e satellite signal, consider the following: • If you are indoors, go outdoors to receive a better signal. • If you are outdoors, move to a more open space. • If the weather conditions are ba d, the signal strength may be affected.

Connectivity Your device offers several options to connect to the internet, a corporate intranet , or to another device or computer. Fast downloading High-speed downlink packet access (HSDPA, also called 3.5G, indicated by ) is a network service in UMTS networks and provides high-s peed data downloads.
To set the device to ask for the mode each tim e you connect the USB data cable to the device, s elect Ask on connection > Yes . Transfer data fro m a computer 1. Make sure that you have select ed USB as a connecti on type in the Manage connections settings in N okia PC Suite.

Security tips When you are not using Bluetooth connectivi ty, select Blueto oth > Off or My phone's visi bility > Hidden . Do not pair with an un known device. SIM access profile With the SIM access profile, you can access the SIM card of your device from a compatible car kit device.
Your device can detect and connect to a wireless local area network (WLAN). To use WLAN, a network mu st be available in the location and your device must be connected to it. WLAN connectio ns Important: Always enable one of the available encryption methods to in crease the security of your wireless LAN conn ection.
To view the details of the WLAN, select Options > Detail s . To save the access point of the WLAN , select Options > Define access point . Always enable one of the av ailable encryption methods to increase the security of yo ur WLAN connection. Using encryption reduces the risk of unauthorised access to your data.
Set up an internet access point for packet data (G PRS) 1. Select Menu > Tools > Settings > Connection > Access points . 2. Select Option s > New access point to create a new access point, or select an ex isting access point from the list and then Options > Duplicate access point to use the access point as a basis for the new one.
Set up an access point for WLAN manually 1. Sele ct Menu > Tools > Settings > Connection > Access points . 2. Sele ct Options > New access point to creat e a new access point, or select an ex isting access point from the list and then Options > Duplicate access point to use the access point as a basis for the new one.
Together with a compatible computer, you can use your device as a modem to connect to the web, for example. Before you can us e your device as a mo dem • You need an approp riate data comm unications software on your computer, s uch as Nokia PC Suite.
Security and data management Manage the data and software on your device, and t ake care of the security of th e device and its co ntents. Importa nt: Your device can only support one antivirus application.
To remove the memory card password, select Optio ns > Remove pass word . When you remove the pa ssword, the data on the memory card is not protected against unauthorised use. To open a locked memory card, select Options > Unlock memory card . Enter the password.
View certificate details You can only be sure of the correct identity of a server when the signature and the va lidity period of a server certificate have been checked. To view certificate details, select View details . One of the following notes may appear: • Certificate not trusted — You have not set any application to use the certificate.
You may not be able to change these codes for all security modules. The key store contains the cont ents of the security module. To delete the key store, select Key store , select the desired key store, and Options > Delete . You may not be able to delete the key store of all security modules.
• Network authentica tion — Select whether to use http authentication. This setting is available only if you have selected internet as the bearer type. • Network user name — Enter your user ID for the http authentication. This setting is available only if you have selected internet as the bearer type.
caused by software packages that are i ncompatible with each other. To remove software, select Optio ns > Remove . If you remove software, you can only reins tall it by usi ng the original software package file, or by restoring a full backup that contain s the removed s oftware packag e.
• Ask every time — Require the Java application to ask for your confirmation each time it uses the functionality. • Ask first ti me — Require the Java application to ask for initial confirmation to use the functionality. • Always allowed — Allow the Java application to use the functionality without y our confirmation.
To activate a key, go to t he Activation keys main view, and select Invalid keys > Options > Get activati on key . Establish a netw ork connection at the prompt , and you are directed to a web site wher e you can purchase rights to the media.
Synchronisation connection settings To define the connection settings of a new profile, select New sync profil e > Conne ction settings and define the following settings: • Server version — Select the SyncML version you can use with the remo te server.
To buy the selected item, select Options > Buy . A submenu opens, where you can select the version of the item and view price information. To download an item that is free of charge, select Options > Get . To view the details of th e selected item, select Opti ons > View details .
Settings Select Menu > Tools > Settings . You can define and modify various settings of your device. Modifying these settings a ffects the operation of your device across several applications. Some settings may be preset for the device or sent to you in a special message by your service provider.
Standby mode settings To select whether to use the active st andby, select Standby mode > Active standby . To assign shortcuts for the scroll key and selection keys, select Standby mode > Shortcuts . These shortcuts are not available in the acti ve standby.
To set the current date and time, select Date and Tim e . To define your time zone, select Time zone . To update the t ime, date, and tim e zone information automatica lly (network service), select Network operato r time > Auto-update .
To set a time-out after which the device is automatically locked and can be used only if the correct lock code is entered, select Phone and SIM card > Phone auto lock period . Enter a number for the time-out in minutes, or select None to set off the autolock period.
Network settings Select Menu > Tools > Settings > Phone > Network . To select the n etwork mo de, select Network mode and Dual mode , UMTS , or GSM .
in GSM and UMTS networks, it is possible to have m ultiple data connections active at the same time; access points can share a data connection, and data connectio ns remain active, for example, during voice calls. See "Connection manager" , p.
In the access point settin gs, select WLAN security mode and the desired mode. WEP security settings Select WEP as the WLAN security mode. The wired equivalent privac y (WEP) encryption method encrypts data before it is transmit ted. Access to the network is denied to users who do not have th e required WEP keys.
• WPA2 only mode — To allow both TKIP and AES (Advanced Encryption Stan dard) encryption, select Off . To allow AES only, select On Wireless LAN plugins Select Menu > Tools > Settings > Connection > Access points .
• Default access poin t — Select the access point to use for the internet connection. • Public user name — Enter your user name received from your service provider. • Use compr ession — Select if compression is used. • Registration — Select the re gistration mode.
To delete configu rations fo r a trusted serv er, select Options > Delete . The configuration settings for other applications provided by this server are also deleted. Restrict packet data Select Menu > Tools > Settings > Co nnection > APN control .
Shortcuts Here are some of the available keyboard shortcuts in your device. Shortcuts can make the use of the applications more efficient. General shortcuts General shortc uts Power key Press and hold to switch your device on and off. Press once to switch between profiles.

Glossary Glossary 3G 3rd generation mobi le communications. A digital system for mobile communications which aims at global use and provides increased bandwidth.
GPRS General packet radio service. GPRS enables wireless access for mobile phones to data ne tworks (network service). GPRS uses packet data technology where information is sent in short bursts of data over the mobile network. The benefit of sending data in packets is that the network is occupied only when sending or receiving data.
