[ 3 ] Welcome 2) W elcom e This section provides informatio n needed bef ore you use your phone. This guide describes the Nokia 8 2 7 0 phone, which is approved for us e in CDMA 1900 ne tworks. • NETWORK SE RVICES AND YO UR WIRELESS PROVIDE R A number of features included in this guide are called Network Services.

[ 6 ] 3) Prepare y our phone for use • INSTAL LING THE BATTER Y If your dealer h a s already installed the battery f or you, please see “Charge the battery” on pa ge 8. Note: Befo r e installing/replacing th e battery , always make sure that the phone is switched off an d that the phone is not connected to a charger or other device.
[ 7 ] Prepare your phone for use 3 Slide the back cover in to its place. • REMOVE THE B ATTERY Note: Befo r e installing the ba ttery , always make sure that the phone is switched off a nd that the phone is not connected to a charger or other device.
[ 8 ] • CHARGE THE B ATTERY Before you use your phone and when the b attery runs down, you need to charge it. 1 Connect the charger to an AC wall out let . If the phone is turned on, the message Charging appears. Then the battery power indicator bar scrolls from bottom to top.

Switch on your phone To turn the phone on or off, press and hold the power key for a few seconds. T o turn off the phone, you ca n also quickly press the power key then press OK .
[ 1 1 ] Get to know your phone Start screen When you turn on you r phone, a s ervice provider screen (or a we lcome note, if you have created one) appears for a moment, then the Star t screen appears. The Start scr een is the “home base” f or your phone.
[ 12 ] Scroll keys Use the scroll keys to: • Scroll the menu items and move the highlighter line up and down in a list of displayed items • Move the cursor (flashing, vertical line) when entering .
[ 13 ] Get to know your phone Battery charge status - While the battery charges, th e bar segments on the indicator move upw ard to show that the battery is charging. While the phone is not connected to a ch a rger , the gr eater the number of bar segments, the greater the leve l of charge.
[ 14 ] Reminder (Birthday) - You have a calen dar reminde r that someone’s birthday is on that date. Reminder ( C all) - Y ou have a calend ar reminder to call someone . Remi nder (M ee ti ng ) - Y ou have a c a lendar reminder of a meeting. Roaming - Y our phone is roaming outside its h om e system.
[ 15 ] Make and answer calls 5) Make and ans wer calls • MAKE A CALL 1 If keyguard is active, press Unl ock , then the star key to deactivate it. To learn about Keyguard, see “Use Keyguard to lock the keypad” on page 5 9. 2 Enter th e phone numb er (if necessa ry , enter a 1 a nd the area code).
[ 16 ] NOTES • If the Anykey an swer feature ( Menu 4 - 1 - 4 ) is set to On , you can answer the call by pressing any key except or . However , if Keyguard is active, you must pr ess to answer the c all, even if the Anykey answer feature is set to On .
[ 17 ] Make and answer calls Tip: You r phone has a built-in antenna. As with any other radio transmitting device, do not touch the antenna unnec essaril y when t he phone is switched on. Contact with the antenna affects call quality and may cause the phone to operate at a higher power level than otherwise n eeded.
[ 18 ] 6) Use phone m enus • NAVIGATE MENUS A menu lists choices that appear on your phone’s sc reen. To navigate menus, you can scroll or use shortcuts. Scroll through menus Y ou navigate m e nus by scrolling through them: • Menu appears above th e left selection key only while the Start scre en is displayed.
[ 19 ] Use ph o n e menu s Note: The number of main menus in your phone, determines whether you ma y need to press the 0 key before you e n ter a shortcut that begins with “1” and is followed by the 1 key and any other key(s). For example, to display the Inbo x Menu ( 1 - 1 - 2 ), press Menu .

[ 22 ] Enter a space To e nter a space, press . Enter special characters To quickly enter one of the m ost common special characters, press several times until the character appear s. To see a list of a ll special characters, press . Scroll u ntil the character you w a nt to insert is highlighted, then press Insert .
[ 23 ] Use the phone book 8) Use the phon e book Note: Y our phone book stores up to 250 names with phone numbers. Numbers can contain 32 digits; nam es can contain 26 chara cters.
[ 24 ] Change views Y ou ca n view your ph one book in thre e different ways: In all views, use th e scroll keys to m ove through the list of names. Select a scrolling view Y ou ca n select the sc r olling view that you prefer: 1 From the m enu, press Names .
[ 25 ] Use the phone book Y ou can also en ter numbers by using a shortcut from the Star t screen: 1 Enter a phone number , an d press Save . 2 Enter a na me at Name . Note: Step 2 is option al. 3 Press OK . • CHANGE A STORED PHONE NUM BER Y ou can ch a nge a number without changing its associated name.
[ 26 ] 2 Scroll to the appropriate name. Pr ess to dial the associated number . OR 1 At the St art scre en, pr ess Nam es . 2 Enter the first few letters of the name you want to call. 3 When the appropriate nam e/num ber appears on th e screen, press to dial this nu m ber .
[ 27 ] Use the phone book • ERASE THE ENTIRE PHONE BOOK Y o u can erase th e contents of your ph one book. Note that this actio n cannot be reversed! Once you have perf or med this procedur e, all the stored information in your phone book is erased.
[ 28 ] 9) Use voice m ail V oice m a il is a network service s feature. Friends or coworkers who miss you when th ey call can leave a voice m essa ge, which can be retrieved later . • RETRIEVE A M ESSAGE Y ou will be notified when a voice me ssage is received: • Y our ph on e beeps whe n you receive a voice message.
[ 29 ] Use voice mail Y our voice mailbox number can be up to 32 digits lon g and is used until it’s changed. There f ore, if you r phone nu m ber changes, you m ay need to change your voice mailbox nu m ber along with it.
[ 30 ] New voice me ssage notifications overwrite olde r ones, regardless of the priority level. For example, if Emergency voi ce mail appears and you re ceiv e a new voice message of normal priority , the emergency message no ti fi ca ti on disa ppears and New voice mes sage appears.
[ 3 1 ] Call log 1 0) Call lo g The Call log ( Me nu 2 ) records information about the last 1 0 calls made, received, or missed: • Phone numb er associated with the call • Date and time when the c.
[ 32 ] • Save - Allows you to add the phone number to your phone book. • Erase - Allows you to erase the entry from the call log. • View number - Allows you to view the associated phone number in your phone book. (Appears only if a na m e from your ph one book app ears on t he scre en.
[ 33 ] Call log View the total duration of al l calls Y our phone uses two timers to record the total duration of a ll calls: CALL TIME R The call timer can be cleared (reset to ze ro), so it is useful for monitoring how much talk time you have used. It records the total time of all calls since the timer was last cleared.
[ 34 ] 1 1) Use ad vanced calling features • SE T IN-C ALL OPT IONS Y our phone allows you to use several features during a call. T h ese featur es are in-call options. Note: Ma ny in-call options are network services features that may require a subscription from your service provider .

[ 36 ] Deactivate network features 1 Use the appropriate menu shortcut for the feature you want to deactivate (Sett ings - Network se rvices - featur e name): • Call forwarding - Menu 4 - 4 - 2 • Call waiting - Menu 4 - 4 - 3 • Caller ID - Menu 4 - 4 - 4 2 Scroll to Cancel , and press OK .
[ 37 ] Use advanced calling features • MAKE A CONFERENCE C ALL Y ou can add a t hird party to a call (conference call). During a call: • Dial the phone n umber of the th ird party , then press , OR... • Scroll to the third pa rty’s phone numbe r in your phone book, then pr ess , OR .
[ 38 ] • Forward i f not answered - Forwards calls if you don’t answer . Use this option when you want to give your phone to someone for a short perio d of time, b u t yo u don’ t want them t o answer the ph one.
[ 39 ] Use advanced calling features NOTES • Access no. - This number is usually a 1-800 number th at is listed on the back of th e calling card. • Phone no. - The phone n umber of the par ty you are calling. • Card no. - Th e unique number for your card.
[ 40 ] Choose a calling card to use Note: If information for on ly one calling card is stor ed in your phone, you are not requ ir ed to choose a calling ca rd. 1 Press Menu 4 - 1 - 3 ( Setting s > Call settin gs > Calli ng car d ). 2 Scroll until the name o f the calling card a ppears, and press Options .
[ 4 1 ] Use advanced calling features • The following procedure assumes that you h a ve stored the Send own caller ID feature code in your phone and activated the feature. If you have not completed these two steps, you may be able to block caller ID manually .
[ 42 ] Select the phone number 1 Press Menu 4 - 4 - 6 ( Se ttings > Network services > NAM selection ). 2 Scroll to the phone n umber you will u s e, and press OK . Note: The first phone number on this list is the currently selected number . Y ou need a t least one active nu mber to make calls.
[ 43 ] Use advanced calling features Store touch tone sequences (strings) Y ou store touch tone strings the same as you store names and numbe rs. Y ou can store a digit sequ ence to send as t ouch tones. STORE TOUCH TONE ST RINGS WITH PHONE NUMBER S 1 Enter the phone number th at you want associat ed with a touch tone.
[ 44 ] 12) Customize your phone • UNDERSTAND PROFILES A profile is a “group of sett ings” you can use to customize the way your phone works. Y ou can set your preferences fo r th ese item s: •.
[ 45 ] Customize your phone • CUSTOMIZE A PROFI LE 1 Press Menu 3 ( Prof iles ). 2 Scroll to highlight a profile. Note: The Handsfree an d Headset profiles do not appear unless yo ur phon e has been con nected to the se accessor ies.
[ 46 ] • Beep once - The phone beeps once (helps prevent disturb ing others). • Silent - The phone makes no sound. Set the ringing volume Y ou can set the default ringing volume f or incoming voice calls and message alert tones. 1 Press Menu 3 ( Prof iles ).
[ 47 ] Customize your phone Set a vibrating alert Y ou ca n set your phone to vibrate when you receive a voice call. This feature is one of th e settings in your phone’s profiles: 1 Press Menu 3 ( Prof iles ). 2 Scroll to the profile to set the vibrating alert.
[ 48 ] 3 Scroll to Customize , and press OK . 4 Scroll to W arning an d gam e tones , then p ress Se lec t . 5 Scroll to On or Off and press OK . Set the message aler t tone Y ou can set your phone to u se a certain tone to indicate an incoming text message.
[ 49 ] Customize your phone 2 Scroll to the desired pr ofile and select Options . 3 Select Customiz e an d press OK . 4 Scroll to and s elect Screen saver and tur n on the feature. 5 Select Screen saver again, scroll t o Screen saver and press Select.
[ 50 ] To adjust the maximum time setting: 1 Follow steps 1-4 above. 2 Scroll to Maxi mum time and press Sel ect . 3 Choose one of the option s, which range from After 30 seconds to After 3 mi nutes , and press OK . View and save downloaded animations When you receive a downloaded animation, a notification message will appear on your s creen.
[ 5 1 ] Customize your phone 4 Scroll to Aut omatic answer , and press Selec t . 5 Scroll to On , and press OK . Set the lights While y our phone i s connected to a handsfr ee device, you can speci fy.
[ 52 ] Note: The memory , timers, language selection, secu rity code, and lock codes are not reset. However , any profiles you modified are reset when you r estore your settings. 1 Press Menu 4 - 2 - 4 ( Se ttings > Phone setti ngs > Restore facto r y sett ings ).
[ 53 ] Customize your phone Allow the network to set the clock 1 Press Menu 4 - 2 - 1 ( Se ttings > Phone setti ngs > Clock ). 2 Scroll to Time settings , and press Selec t .
[ 54 ] Y ou can add an image or message that appears when you turn your phone on. To accomplish this: 1 Press Menu 0 1- 3 ( Messag es > W elcome sc reen ). 2 Press Sele ct . Y ou will have three choices: Logo , Note or Animatio n . 3 Once you have selected th e option you wish to use, press Select .
[ 55 ] Customize your phone USE ONE-TOUCH DIALING Y ou must store names and numbers before using on e-touch dialing. Y ou can assign a name from the phone book to one-touch dialing, using keys 2 through 9. When you press the key , the number is automatically dialed.
[ 56 ] • IDENT IFY CALLERS BY CUSTOM RING ING TONES Y o u can assign a ringing tone to an entry in you r phone book, allowing you to identify the call er by the ton e you hear when they call. To use this feature, you must subscribe to the Caller ID service that is available from your service provider .
[ 57 ] Security 13) Security A security code , a phone lock feature, and a call r estriction feature pre vent unauthorized use of your phone. A keypad lock prevents unintended key presses, such as when you r phone is in your purse or pocket. • CHANGE YOUR SECURITY C ODE Important : The default security code is 123 45 .
[ 58 ] Important : The default lock code is 12 34 (or the last four digits of your phone nu m ber , depe n ding on your ser vice provider). Nokia highly recommends that you immediately change this code, write down the new code, and store it in a s afe place, away from your phone.
[ 59 ] Security Answer a call while the phone is locked Press any key except or . Change your lock code 1 Press Menu 4 - 3 - 2 - 3 ( Setting s > Secu rity sett ings > Acce ss codes > Change lock code ). The messa ge Ent er lock co de appear s .

[ 6 1 ] Security Note: When calls are restricted, emergency calls may be p os sible (for example, 9 1 1 or other official emergency number). Y ou m ay be able to make the call manually by e n tering the em er gency number and then pressing . Restrict outgoing calls 1 Press Menu 4 - 3 - 1 ( Setti ngs > Sec u rity settings > Restrict calls ).
[ 62 ] 14) Se lect Syste m The Sys tem menu ( Me nu 5 ) allows you to customize the way your phone chooses a system in which to operate while you are “roaming” (using your phone outside your pr imary or “home” system). Y our choice of a syste m affects the type and amount of charges you incur .
[ 63 ] Send and receive text m essages 15) Send and receive te xt messages When you have mobile (text) mess aging service, you can receive messages on the screen and send m essages to e-mail addre s ses and phone numbers.
[ 64 ] Write a new message 1 Press Menu 0 1 - 1 - 1 ( Message s > T ext messag es > Write new ). If Te xt and Number only appear in a list of menu item s, scr oll to Te xt , press Sele ct , and go to the next st ep. If these item s are not on your menu, proceed to the n ext step.
[ 65 ] Send and receive text m essages Change the text input method To switch (toggle) between predictive and traditional text input modes while you are editing a m e ssage, press the Pou nd key several times until the icon indicates the mode you want to use.
[ 66 ] 3 On the l anguage list, scroll to Predict ion off an d press OK . Your phone is now in traditional (multitap) mode. 4 Y ou can also u s e multitap on the pound key ( # ) to go to traditional text in a m essage.
[ 67 ] Send and receive text m essages 5 If the ? character appears af ter the word, th ere are no more words in the dictionary that correspond to your key presses.
[ 68 ] Inserting special characters • To insert a special cha racter (such as a pu nctuation mark), press an d hold the Star key , or press Options , scroll to Ins ert sym bol , then press Sele ct . • To insert a period ( . ) quickly , press . To insert double h yphens ( -- ) quickly or three dots (a n ellipsis .
[ 69 ] Send and receive text m essages Press Read to read the m essage now . The Inbox opens with the new message selected. If No space: mes sage waiting or a s imilar message appears, your phone’s memory is full. Y ou must make room for t he message.
[ 7 0 ] Save address extracts on e or more e-mail addresses from the message (if it contains any) an d allows you to save the addr esses in your phone book. Forw ard allows you to sen d the message to another recipient. For m ore information about forwarding a message, see “Forward a message” on page 76 .
[ 7 1 ] Send and receive text m essages • CREATE A TEXT MESSAGE Address a text messa ge Use this procedure to addr ess your message to on e or more recipients: 1 Y ou must be editing the message that you want to address: •I f y o u a r e i n Edit message, press Options , then go to the next step .
[ 72 ] • When entering an e-mail address manually , you can quickly enter the @ symbol by pressing repeatedly until the @ sym bol appears. Note: To address a number -only message, s ee “Send a number - only message” later in this section.
[ 73 ] Send and receive text m essages Note: When sending messages via the SMS network service, your phone may display the words “Message Se nt” . T h is is an indication that the message has been sent by your phone to the message center number programmed into yo ur phone.
[ 74 ] • When searching, the list of en tries in your phone book is displayed. To jump to an entry quickly , press the a ppropriate key . For example, if the entry is John ( j ), press . To jump to Ki m ( k ), pr ess twice. • Y ou can address your message to as many as 1 0 recipients.
[ 75 ] Send and receive text m essages 2 Scroll until the message is highlighte d, then press Select . Depending on your service provider , y ou may ne ed to confirm your choice or enter your security code to prevent accidental deletion of messages.
[ 76 ] • FORWARD A MESSA GE 1 In the Inbox or Saved folder , read the message that you want to forwa rd. 2 Press Opt ions , s croll to For ward , then press Selec t . 3 Prepare your m e ssage as you wo u ld any oth er message that you create. • If the message you ar e forwarding is a text message, you ca n edit the messa ge before you s end it.
[ 77 ] Send and receive e-mail m essages 16) Send and receive e-ma il messages Y o u can u se your phone to send and receive e-mail messages. Y ou no long er need to be at your comput er to send or rece ive messages. The e- mail feature is not a vailable from all service providers.
[ 78 ] 2 Enter the name. Press OK . The Number box opens. 3 Enter the ph one number . Pre ss OK . The messa ge Save d appears briefly , con firming your action. 4 Press Opt ions , s croll to E-mail a ddress . Press Se lect . The e-mail a ddress box opens.

[ 80 ] 17) Min ibrowser Note: This feature is available only if your service p rovider’s network supports wireless in ternet access. Y our service provider may also require that you subscribe to this additional service. For more information, contact you r service provider .
[ 8 1 ] Minibro wser Note: The information or services you have accessed are stored in the cache of your phone. A cache is a buffer memo ry , which is used to store dat a temporarily .
[ 82 ] • Show U RL : Show the web address (U niform Resource Locator) for the current page. • Restart : Return to the Home pa ge and delete all stored pages. • Ve r s io n : S how the version of Minibrowser software. • Advanced : Ch ange server and encryption settings.
[ 83 ] Minibro wser ACTIVATE AN ITEM (FOR EXA MPLE, A LIN K) • Press the appropriate number key on you r phone’s keypad (if the item on the page is n umbered). • OR, scroll to the item , then press the appropriate selection key (for example, to activate a link).
[ 84 ] SET A BOOKMAR K 1 Go to the page for which you want to set a bookmark. 2 Press and release the P ower key . The Minibrowse r menu appears. 3 Scroll to B ookmar k page , then press Select . (A me ssage may appear asking you to confirm this action.
[ 85 ] Minibro wser • DISAB LE MINIBRO WSER CONFIR MATI ONS Y ou can specify w hether or not you want your ph one to co nfirm your choice to connect to th e web or exit the M inibrowser session. 1 Press Menu 4 - 1 - 5 ( Setti ngs > Call s ettings > Mi nibrowser confirmations ).
[ 86 ] 18) Use yo ur personal a ssistant Y our phone can b e your personal assistant. It can wake you up in the morning, or remind you of meetings, birthdays, and tas ks. Check the current time and calculate a tip at dinner . It’s a calendar , clock, alar m clock, calculator , and phone book — everything you need to keep track of your life.
