3 2. Gettin g Connec ted Before you can use yo ur new phone, you need to attach and ch arge t he batte ry. Th is sect ion will h elp fam iliariz e you o n how , and wh en, to cha rge yo ur ba tter y. Attachi ng your batter y Simpl y plac e the b attery in the groov es on th e back of your phon e.
4 Charging your new ba ttery Your p hone c an be u sed wi th either a r echarge able Li-Ion or NiMH battery. Note that a new battery’s fu ll perfo rmance is achieved only aft er two or thr ee comp lete ch arge a nd dis charg e cycle s. With y our pho ne on o r off , conn ect the charg er to a stand ard 120V AC outlet .
5 When is char ging complete? When the c harge in dicator s stop s crollin g, your phon e is cons idere d fully ch arg ed. How eve r, a slig ht in crease in charg e m ay o ccur i f yo ur phone is left con nected to t he charger for a while. This is ca lled “tri ckle charge .
6 Importa nt Battery Information • The batter y can be c harged and discharg ed hundred s of times but it will eventua lly wear out. When the operating time (talk tim e and standby tim e) is noticeably sho rter than normal, it is time to buy a new battery.
7 3. The Basics You have purchased a powerful phone, with lots of featu res. R ead thi s sect ion fo r so me ve ry ba sic informati on on how t o use your phone. A more comprehensive description of your phone is covered in “Features A to Z” starting on page 16.
8 Checking signal str ength When yo u are at th e start scr een (see page 12) or in a call, the si gnal s treng th is indi cated b y the indica tors on the le ft si de of your pho ne’s displ ay. Th ese in dicators scroll as the stre ngth of t he sign al i ncreas es a nd dec reases .
9 W a nt to stop your phone fr om ringing w ithout answering the call? Press ô when the phone rings. This keeps you from answ ering a ca ll if it's incon veni ent t o talk. You can st ill answ er the call if Call or the name of t he perso n who is ca lling is st ill flas hing o n your dis play.

11 4. Using Y our Phone The first few days you have your phone, play with i t to learn how the menu and submenu system works. The more you le arn how to access the se menus and sub men us, th e mo re fu n you ’ll ha ve wi th yo ur ph on e. This section describes the different methods of using your phone menus and submenus.
12 For ex ample, p ress Menu once . The s croll bar a ppears with the first (top) tab disp layed. A different tab appears each t ime you pr ess th e W or V key to m ove up an d down through the menu structure. The scroll bar works the same way with submenus.
13 Using shortcuts This is a q uick an d ea sy wa y to acces s a m enu witho ut having t o scroll through other menus. Press Menu , then me nu number, then submenu number. Press the me nu and s ubmen u number s wit hin a coup le of second s of each othe r when using thi s method.

16 5. Featu res A to Z ABC mode This allows you to enter name s into your phone book. See “Ent ering letter s and nu mbers” on page 34 . Access co des This is a se curity feature that al lows you acc ess to cert ain pho ne feat ures, such as the ph one loc k ( page 50 ) and unl ock ed phon e numb er ( p age 67 ).
17 Snoozing Pr ess Snooze . The alarm will go off again in 10 minutes. If you let the phon e alarm for 1 minu te with out pre ssing a key, it stops alarm ing for 10 minute s then start s agai n. T urning t he alar m cloc k off Press Menu 4 2 2 ( Settings - Ph one s ett ings - Ala rm clock ), then scroll t o Off and press OK .

38 Inbox When you recei ve a text mes sage, it’s stored i n the Inbox. Your phone will display Message r eceiv ed , along with the te xt message icon, and makes a sound ( depending on the m essage alert tone; see pa ge 42 ). Please see “ Text messages an d pages” on page 61 for complete details on this feature.

40 Letter case You can chang e from upper to lowe r case when entering lett ers into your phone. See “Chang ing letter case” on page 3 5 for c omplete deta ils. Life timer The li fe timer di spla ys the total ti me of al l calls dialed and recei ved with yo ur pho ne (in hours and min utes only).
41 Lock code You’l l need the loc k code to act ivate and dea ctivat e Phone Lock (se e page 50 ), or to ch ange your lo ck code. The default lock code is 1234. If you enter an inco rrect loc k code fiv e times in a row, your phone w ill prompt you f or the security c ode (see pa ge 59 ).
42 Memory status This f eature allows y ou to se e how many free and in-us e memory loca tions are in yo ur director y. Also, s ee “Pho ne book ” on pa ge 47.
43 Microphone You can mute an d un mut e yo ur p ho ne’s micro pho ne while a ca ll is in pro gres s. During a call, y our phon e’s soft key s chan ge from Names and Menu to Options and Mute . Muting and unmuting your phone You can mute the phone’s mi crophone duri ng a call; simply press Mute .
44 NAM sel ection The service provide r programs your phone with th e phone nu mber and s ystem i nform ation int o your phone’ s memory wh en your phon e is first ac tivate d. This i s calle d a Numbe r Assi gnme nt Modu le (N AM). For exampl e, your phone ca n be activat ed in up to 3 diff erent servic e area s (e .
45 Each t ime yo u use a feature that requi res a feat ure code, that cod e is sent to the network to verify you’re using the cor rect feat ure c ode. Note: If yo ur phone ha s more than one pho ne number pro- grammed, any feature co des stor ed will appl y only to your primar y phone number , or NAM 1 .
46 One-touc h dialing This fe ature allows yo u to m ake pho ne calls quic kly and easil y wi th the tou ch of a b utto n. You must store names and numbers in your phone book ( see page 48 ) before you can use this feature. Then you can assign a name from the phone book to a o ne-touch dial location using your phone’s keys 2 through 8.

59 Security cod e Your phone wil l prompt you for a se curity code for cer- tain features . These feat ures can be used onl y aft er the corr ect se curity co de has been s uccessf ully e ntered. Note: When enterin g your security code, * **** will appear on the display to keep othe rs from viewing your cod e.
60 Note: Befo re you can de activate th is feature, yo u must first store the fea ture co de given to you by your service provider . Otherwise, this feature may not appear in th e menu. See “Netwo rk feature sett ing” on page 44 fo r more det ails.
61 System Your phone is capable of working in Residential, Private, and Public Systems (such as your Home System). You can choose how your phone sel ects a netw ork to use.
62 Note: T ext messages that you receive with your phone may appear differ ent at t imes, due to m essages that o riginate i n networks othe r than your own. Als o, the maxi mum le ngth of a te xt me ssage may d epen d on the networ k’ s ca pabilities.
63 Sending options If you press Options wh en sending a te xt message, you’ll find the following choices: Send sends the message as a normal text message. Sett ings allows you to tag your messages (see below) Save will save your message to the Saved fo lder.
64 Reading text messages With Messa ge rece ived displayed, press Read and scrol l to new me ssage, then press Read ag ain Reading option s Press Options w hile a text message is displayed to acces s the fol lowing readin g options : Read next allows you to re ad th e nex t me ssage .
65 Replying to a message Note: This feature is o nly availab le if your ph one has been activated in a wireless system that su pports the se nding of text messages. With the message displayed, press Options , scroll t o Reply and p ress OK . Then write your r eply and send the me ssage as you no rmally would.
66 Storing touch to ne strings Touch tone strings can be used f or sending a nd rece iving inform ation wi th your phone. For ex ample, you ca n stor e your of fice voice mailbox numbe r, alo ng with your password for easy access to your m essages. Stor e touch t one stri ngs the same way you stor e phone numbers ( see page 48 ).
67 T ouch t one leng th This fe ature de termines the lengt h of eac h touch tone when th ey are sent auto matical ly. Short sets the tone length to .1 second. Long sets the tone len gth to . 5 seco nd. You can set the tou ch tone l ength by pre ssing Men u 4 2 3 2 ( Settings - Phone set tin gs - T ouch t one s - Tou c h tone le ngt h ).
68 Activating vibr ating alert 1. Press Menu 3 ( Profile s ) 2. Y o ur pho ne list s ea ch Profile. Use W to h ighl igh t th e one you w ant to set the vibrat ing al ert for a nd press Options . 3. High light Customize and pre ss OK . Press W to r each Vibrating alert , then press Se lect agai n.
69 Gre etings, passwords, and pr ompts These may vary in diff erent wireless systems. So if you need inform ation about how to record your greeti ng or how to store y our pa sswo rd, co ntac t your servic e provi der. Yo u’ll also ne ed to contac t them on how t o listen to voic e messages once you’re c onnected to y our voice ma ilbo x.
70 Warning and game tones This is one of the settings in your phone’s Profiles ( see page 51 ) . Warning a nd game tones include tones your phone makes for conditions such as errors, confir- mations, power on, battery low and recharge battery . These t ones a lso in clude t he sou nds your phone makes as you play its various games.
71 6. Dat a and fax ca lls Note: This featur e may not be availabl e in all wireless netwo rks. Contact your service provider for details an d availability . Your phone can fu nctio n as a fax/ modem when conn ected to y our PC o r la ptop c omp uter via the optional DLR-3P data ca ble.
72 7. Accessories If you wa nt to e nhance your phone’s func tionali ty, an exten sive ra nge o f acce ssories is av aila ble f or you. You can select any of these items to help acco mmodate your s pecifi c comm unicati on nee ds. For availa bilit y of these and o ther a ccesso ries, contact your servic e provider.
73 Charging Times Note: The ti mes displayed above are ap proximate and will allow your batte ry to obtai n approxim ately 80% of its capa city . At this time, the batter y scroll bars on your phone’ s display will stop scrolling.
