1 1. For your safety Read these simple guidelines before using your phone. Failure to comply with thes e guidelin es may be dangerous or illegal. 2 FCC/Industry Canada Notice Y our phone may cause TV or radio interference (for example, when using a telephone in close proximit y to receiv ing equipment). The FCC or Industry Canada can require you t o stop using your telephone if such interference cannot be eliminated.
3 2. Battery installation and char ging Before you can use your new phone, you need to attac h and charge the battery . Attaching the battery To attach the batte ry , place it on the back of the ph one as shown and s lide it towa rd the top of the phone u ntil it click s into place.
4 Prob lem s charg in g If your phone displays Not char ging , charging is suspended. Check that the battery is connected to an appro ved charging device. If the battery is very hot or cold, wait for a whi le; charging w ill automatica lly resu me after the battery i s restored to its normal operating state.
5 Removing the battery Note: Switch off the phone before removing the battery! 1 Press and hold the button at the top of th e battery . 2 Slide the battery toward the bottom of the phone. 3 Lift the battery off the phone. Important battery information • The battery can be charged and discharged hundreds of t imes but it will eventually wear out.
6 3. About th e phone, keys and menu Power key Y ou can us e the pow er key to: • turn the phone on or off (press and hold ) • turn the phone’ s lights on for 3 0 seconds • select a quick al ert setting (see page 25) (if Keygua rd is off and the phon e is not conn ected to a headset or ot her handsfree de vice.
7 Scroll keys The scroll key s are locate d to the right of the Navi™ ke y . Use the scroll keys to: • brows e menu s • move t he cursor (see page 1 1) to the right or the left • adjus t the e.
8 External antenna jack At the back of the phone , below the antenna, t here is a con- nector for an external antenna. The conne ctor may be pro- tected b y a rubber c a p. Remove th e cap before connecti ng a n external a ntenna. After re moving the a ntenna, replac e the cap.
9 Menu sho rtcuts When you select a menu item , numbers a ppear on the screen above the scroll bar . If you become familiar with these numbe rs, you c an use th em as shortcuts for acc essing different m enu items. For example, to access th e Phone setti ngs menu, you can simply pre ss Menu 4 2.

11 Entering letters and numbers Curs or The cursor is a blinking vertical line that appears on the scre en when you are enter ing text o r numbers . Characters you enter appear to the righ t of the cursor . Press to delete th e characte r to the le ft of the curs or .
12 Changi ng letter case Press the key (the Case ke y, shown on the phone diagram on this guide’s inside front cover) to switch betwe en upper- and lower-cas e letters.
13 Keyguard (loc king the k eypad) Using the Keyguard feature y ou can “lock” your p hone’ s ke ypad so that accident al keypress es have no effect. This is han dy when y our phone is in a pocket or purse. Note: K e yguard is not a sec urity feature and will n ot prevent unauthorized use of your phon e.
14 Notes about K eyguard • Wh en Keyguard is on, the only w ay to answer a call is to press An swer . Once t he call is t erminated , keyguard is reactivate d. • When Keyguard is on, press t he power key briefly to turn your phone’s lights on for 30 seconds.
15 4. Basic functions Turning the phone on Press and hold for one second. Note: Pressing briefly turn s your phone ’s lights on for fifteen seconds. If the phone asks for a lock code, see ‘Lock c ode’ on page 60. If the phone asks for a security code, see ‘Security code’ on page 60.
16 Checking signal strength Y our phon e operates on radio waves. Radio signal coverage is maintain ed by a wirele ss network, a nd the quality of calls on your phone depends on the strength of the wireless radio sig nal.
17 Ending a call Press En d . During the call, if y ou entere d any cha racters (for example, if you entered a few num bers to commu nicate with an automated att endant), th e charact ers will rema in on th e sc reen. To clear them , pr ess a nd ho ld .
18 Silencing an incomi ng call To s ile nce the ringing of the incoming call, press briefly . You can still answer the call if Call or th e name of the person is still flashing on your scree n.
19 5. Phone boo k For conveni ent and e asy dialing , you ca n save 99 phone numbers and associat ed n ames in your phone. Saving names and numbers Saving a name and number is easy! Just en ter the phon e numb er , pr ess or , then pre ss Save . Ente r a name if you wish, then press OK .
20 Saving email addresses Y ou can as sociate an em ail ad dress w ith ea ch entry i n yo ur phone book. Later , when addressing a te xt message, you can quickly en ter the ema il address by s electing a nam e in y our phone book. (The ability to send a tex t message depends on the arr angement yo u make with you r service pr ovider .
21 While p erforming other fu nctions Say you want to forward your phone calls to a number that is saved in your phone book. When you are prompted to enter th e phone nu mber , you c an find it instead—si mply press Search to access your phone book.
22 6. Settings This section describes some phone settings that allow you to customize your phon e to suit your pre ferences and that you probably won’t change very often. Automatic redial Use Menu 4 1 2 to turn this feature on or off. When th is feature is on and the wireless network is busy , your phone redials a number u p to three time s.
23 Select in g time fo rm at Use Menu 7 2 3 to set the cl ock’s forma t to am /pm or 24-ho ur . Displa ying or hiding the clock Press Me nu 7 2 1 to display the clock on the phone ’s screen if it is curre ntly hidden, or vice versa .
24 Ringin g option Use Menu 8 1 to tell your phone how to notify you th at you have a c all. Note : If yo u cho ose Beep once or Silent , the alarm clock only sounds a quiet beep. Ring The phone rings normally using th e currently sele cted ringing tone.
25 Warnin g an d game to nes Use Menu 8 6 to turn your phone’s warning an d game tones on or off. Warning tones are c reated by events su ch as confirmations, errors, power on, battery low , and recharge battery .
26 Headset Y our phone aut omaticall y selects this whe n it is connected to a headse t. Your ph on e remembers any changes you make to setting s in Menu 8, Tone s, and uses t hem the next time you c onnect the phone to a heads et. Handsfree Y our phone a utomatically selects this when it is connected to a handsfree device.
27 7. Emerg ency ca lls 1 If the phone is no t on, switch it on. 2 Press and hold for several seconds to ready the phone for calls. 3 Ke y in the emer gency nu mber for yo ur presen t locatio n (e.g. 9 1 1 or other official emergency num ber). Emergency numbers va ry by location.
28 Emergency ke y 9 Use Menu 4 1 1 to tu rn on this fe ature. W hen this feature is on, the p hone att empts to make an emer g ency cal l when you: • press and hold th e 9 key , or • press 9, then press Cal l . Note: When Keyguard is active , the only way to make an emerg ency call i s to dial the emerg ency numb er , then pr ess Call .
29 8. Adva nced func tions Network feature sett ing Call forwardin g, call wa iting, and send caller ID are network services available through your servic e provider . These featu res do not appear in your ph one’s Network ser vices men u until you save the relat ed feature code(s) given to you by yo ur service provider .
30 Note: I f you have an active call and an in coming or held call, pressing isn’t necessary; Options ap pears automa tically . If you rece ive a cal l while in a call, the Navi™ key function changes to An swer .
31 Call wa iting Call wait ing is a netw ork servic e that allows you to rece ive an incoming call when you’re already in a call. Con tact your service provider for de tails. Answe ring a wa iting ca ll When you receive a call while alre ady in a call, the Navi™ key function changes from End to Answer .
32 3 Scroll to Edi t , then press OK . 4 Enter your security code (see page 60), then press OK . 5 At Dialing sequ ence , press Selec t . Press to choose the dialing sequence your card uses, then press Select . Note: The order of the following steps may vary , depending on which dialing sequence your card uses.
33 Choosi ng a call ing card to use Use Menu 4 1 3 to select a calling card t o use. You are required to ente r your security code. Call ing card calls To make a c all using a calling card: 1 Enter th.
34 Menu me thod Y ou can save the code for activating call forwarding and then use th e me nu to activ ate call forw arding (see ‘Adding feature activatio n codes to the menu ’ on page 29). Cancel ling call f orwarding Standard meth od To cancel call forwarding, you mu st get the c all forwarding cancellation code from yo ur service provider .
35 3 Press or to c hoose the name you want to assign to the se lected key , the n press Selec t . If a key already has a numb er assigned to it, you can press Options and then vie w , change, or era se the number assignment.
36 Stan dard meth od 1 Dial th e feat ure c ode f ollowed by th e numb er y ou want to call. 2 Press Call . Example : If the fe ature code to hide your number is *67 and the number yo u want to dial is (214) 555-1234, dial *672 145551234 , then pres s Call .
37 If this happens, select the appropriate selection for your phone. If yo u don’t want your service provider to change your lock code , sele ct LOC K . If you want to all o w your service pr ovider to chan g e your co de to prevent o ther service prov i ders from activ ating your p hone, press UNLOCK .
38 System choices Y ou r phone will automa tically try to use a preferred system . If your phone fails to find a preferred system, then it will use the select ion you h ave chosen w ith this fe ature. Before you select a system, conta ct your s ervice provider to learn how these cha nges ma y affect yo ur phone bill.
39 Note : When roam ing i n som e syst ems, you may ne ed to ha ve a roaming agre ement in orde r to place a call. If no roam ing agreement has been arranged, a network operator may interrupt and request information on how you inte nd to pay for the ca ll.
40 Setting manua l touch tone length Use Menu 4 2 1 1 to set th e leng th of touch ton es crea ted when y ou press a ke y: Cont inuous sounds the tone for as long as you pres s and hold the ke y . Fixed sets the t one le ngth to one tenth of a second, regardless of how long you pre ss and hold the key .
41 9. Call log For your c onveni ence, th e call log ( Menu 3) s aves a lis t of phone numbers you have diale d, and can show you approx i- mately how much tim e you have spent on the phone. If y ou subscribe to th e caller ID network serv ice, the call lo g also records the phone numbers of missed calls and received calls.
42 Viewing the missed c alls list at any time Use Menu 3 1 to view the mis sed calls list at any tim e. T o dial a number , press Option s , then choose Call . Received calls If you su bscribe to the caller ID n etwork s ervice, your phone automatically stores the phone num bers of the 10 m ost recent calls you ’ve answe red.
43 Last call displays the duration of the last call, or current call if applicable. All cal ls disp lays the du ration of all calls since th e timers were last reset. Life ti mer displays the duration of all calls for the life of your phone and cann ot be reset.
44 1 0. Voice messages V oice ma il is a netw ork service that allow s callers t o record a mes sage when y ou canno t be reac hed. Y ou can t hen call your voic e ma ilbox and retrieve your me ssages. Saving your voice mailbox number When you subs cribe to voice mail, your servi ce provider gives you a voice ma ilbox numb er .
45 2 When your phone n otifies you t hat you’ re able to listen to your messa ges, press Send . Note: The method of notification depends on your service provider .
46 1 1. Rec eiving text (m obile) m essag es Note : You can receive mobile me ssages if you hav e subscribed to the mobile me ssaging serv ice offered by you r service provider and the network in w hich you are using your phone supports mobile messaging.
47 • Emergency mes sages - W hen an em ergency me ssage is received, existin g messages are deleted in t he following order: - oldest read message in t he Inbox - oldest message in the Saved folder .
48 12. Send ing text (m obile) messages Note : You can send mobile m essages if y ou have subscribed to the mobile me ssaging serv ice offered by you r service provider and the network in w hich you are using your phone supports mobile messaging.
49 Message fol ders Message are st ored in folders: • Inbox - M essage s that you have re ceived (w hether read or unread) and th at you have neit her deleted nor saved. • Outbox - Messa ges that you have sent (or tha t you have cr eated then saved, int ending to send later) .
50 Creating a mobile message There are di fferent ways t o crea te a mobile mess age: • Write a new , blank message • Reply to a received message • Resend a message from the Outbox • Forward a message Writi ng a new , bl ank message 1 Press Menu 2 1 1 (Messages - Text messages - Write new ).

52 Addressing a Number only message T o address a Number only message, enter as many as 5 ph one numbers in the Recipient (s) fi eld. Th e ma ximum num ber o f digits allowed in a phone nu mber is 32.
53 Using the traditional text input method re quires th at you pre ss some keys m ore than onc e. For ex ample, to ent er the letter “c”, you mus t pr ess 2 2 2 . When using pred ictive text input, you r phone “guesses” which word you are typing, requiring that you press a key on ly once fo r each letter you ente r .
54 Deleti ng characters To de l e t e one charac ter to the le ft of the curs or , press . To de l et e all characters in th e message, press and hold .
55 Chan ging the la ngu age of th e dicti onary While editin g a message, press Option s , Dicti onary , then choose a language. Deact ivatin g predic tive text input mode To deactivate th e p redictive te xt featu re, w hile editing a message, press Opti ons , Dict ionary , Dicti onary of f .
56 Bracket s ( [ ] ) in a template represent a v alue that you can specify . (The v alue is not re tained for future use; you e nter the valu e each time y ou use th e tem plate. ) If you s elec t a template that c ontains brackets, you’ll be prompted to enter a value.
57 13. Extra features Alarm clock The alarm clock feature sounds an alert at a time y ou specify . Setti ng th e alar m cloc k Use Menu 7 1 to t urn the ala rm clock on or off. Note that when you’re e ntering the alarm tim e, use tw o digits for both hours and m inutes (for example, enter 1:30 as 0 130 ).
58 • To shut off the alarm, pres s any key except Snooze . The phone displays K eep the phone on? . Pre ss Ye s to keep it on or to switch it off. •I f y o u p r e s s Snooze , the phone turns itself off for ten minutes , th en the alarm sou nds again.
59 Logic Find the secret combin ation of figures in a colu mn. P os sible figures are shown at the top of the screen. Press the 5 key repeatedly to selec t a figure and the 2, 4, a nd 8 keys to move the cu rsor. O nce you t hink yo u ha ve the right comb inat ion, press .
60 14. Security features Access codes overview Access cod es consist of t he lock code and secu rity code. When you get you r phone, you should chan ge these codes from their defaults, write dow n the new codes, and keep them in a safe place away from t he phone.
61 Rest rict ing in com ing c alls Y ou can block all incom ing calls or creat e a list of incoming numbers f rom w hich you don’t wa nt to re ceive ca lls. To block all incomin g calls, enter your secu rity code, scrol l to Select and press OK , then press Mar k .
62 The entry is added to your list of restricted numb ers. Y our phone can s ave up to 15 restric ted incoming numbers . Once y ou ente r 15 re stricted n umbers, the A dd restrict ion option is remo ved from the menu. This option is available again once you delete one or more phon e numbers from the restricte d list.
63 Addin g numb ers to the rest ricte d outgo ing ca lls list A call restric tion can cons ist of an ent ire phone numbe r , an area code , etc. Wh en the re striction is selecte d, calls can not be made to any nu mber beginnin g with those digits. For examp le, en terin g 2 145551234 blocks calls to (214) 555- 1234 only .
64 Allow ing call s to a numb er on th e list If you later de cide to a llow calls to a restricted number , scroll to Selec t and press OK . Y o u can now see yo ur list of numbers. Press Unmar k to remove t he restriction. (The num ber remains in the list so t hat you can restric t it aga in late r by pressing Mark .

68 Charging times The table below displays approximate ba t tery charging times. These charging ti mes charge your phone to about 80% of it s capacity , and t he battery stre ngth indicat or stops scrolling. If you wish to obtain 1 00% battery capacity , please allow another two hours for “maintenance” charge .
69 The times shown are approximate, and represent a ra nge for either standby or talk times (not a combination of both). Battery operation times vary according to signal conditions, network parameters set by the service provider , and how you use your phone.
70 Calls can be ma de during c harging, but ch arging will stop for the duration o f the call a nd the battery bar s crolling stops. Note: If the battery is completely emp ty , you cannot use the phone until it has enough charge to operate.
71 A green light indic ates that the Rapid Cigarette Lighter Charger is ready to charge. Check the charging s tatus on your p hone’s scre en. The input voltage is 12 or 24 V DC, negative grounding. The Rapid Cigarette Lighter Charger can be used with all accessories available for your phone.
72 When the spare battery is ch a rging, check the stat us i ndicator on the left sid e of the cha rging stan d. A red ligh t indicate s that the battery is chargin g; a green light in dicates that the battery is char ged to at least 80 % of its capacity .
