[ 3 ] W elcome and quick gu ide 2 W elcom e and quick g uide Congratulations on your purchase of a Nokia mobile phone, a new tool for the mobile information society . Before you begin, you need to prepare your phone by charging the battery and learning how to maintain it.

[ 7 ] W elcome and quick gu ide Use the antenna Tip: Y our phone has a built-in antenna. As with any other radio transmitt ing device, do not to uch the an tenna unnec essaril y when the phone is switched o n. Cont act w ith t he a nten na a ffects call quality and may cau se the phon e to oper ate a t a higher power level than otherwise n eeded.
[ 8 ] 3 Align the cover ov er the back of the phone, placing the end of the cover approximately 1/4 inch past the end of the ph one. Lower the back cover onto the phone.
[ 9 ] W elcome and quick gu ide 3 Look for the battery latch that runs along the end of the battery nearest the top of the phone. 4 Place your thumbs on the corners of the latch and press away from the battery . 5 Once the battery is released from the latch, it will lift slightly so that it can be removed from th e phone.
[ 1 0 ] IMPORT ANT BATTERY INFO RMATION Use the following guidelines to obtain the best performance from your battery: • With your phone turned off, charge your new battery for th ree hours before its first use. Use the battery until it is f ully discharged.

[ 14 ] Contact your service prov ider Y ou may want to save your service provider’s cu stomer support telephone number into your phone. This will let you easily contact your provider if you have questions or issues with your phone service.
[ 15 ] W elcome and quick gu ide Set up the TTY/TDD profile Y o u can connect your phone to a TTY/TDD using the Nokia TTY/TDD Adapter (HDA-9). In order for your phone to recognize the TTY/TDD, you will ne ed to connect the adapter to your phone.
[ 16 ] MAKE A TTY/ TDD CALL Tip: Before making a TTY/TDD c all with your Nokia phone, ch eck the sig nal stre ngth . See “U nderstan d indicators and icons” on page 20 for details. 1 From the Star t screen, enter the number and pr ess . 2 When the receiving party answers, begin typing your conversation on the TTY/TDD.

[ 18 ] • MAKE AND ANSWER CALLS There are several ways to m ake and answer calls on your phone. Once learning about th e basic methods, you will dis cover other tips throughout this guide w hen reading about the phone’s features. Use the keypad 1 Enter the phone number , including area code if needed.
[ 19 ] Basic operations Answer a call When your phone rings, press . Y ou can press any key to answer a call except the power key , end key , or the scr oll keys. Note: If Keyguard is active, the keypad will unlock when you have an incoming call. Silence an incoming call Press or Silen t to mute the ringing of an incoming call.
[ 20 ] Understand the Scroll Bar When you press Menu , a vertical scroll bar appears on the r ight side of the screen. This s croll bar has a t ab which moves up or down to indicate your location in th e menu. Understand indicators and icons Y ou have two types of identifiers on your phone: icons and indicators.
[ 2 1 ] Basic operations Ico ns Screen Icon Wh at it means Active call in progress. Silent has been selected as the current profile. The phone’s keypad is locked to pr event any accidental key presses. One (or more) new voice me ssages waiting. One or more n ew text messages waiting.
[ 22 ] • USE THE SELECTION KEYS The selection key allows you to select various phone options. At the bottom of the Start screen, two options appear: Menu and Names . The selection keys are located just below these options. The left selection key is located under Menu .
[ 23 ] Basic operations • BROWSE PHO NE MENUS A menu is a list of cho ices yo u can m ake to change settings on your phone or use various phone features. Eac h m en u c an co nt ai n s ev era l levels of submenus. Y ou can use menus and submenus two ways: by scrolling or by using a shortcut.
[ 24 ] MENU TIPS • Y ou can s croll upw ard to quic kly access t he last op tion in a menu list. • Y ou can return to th e previous menu level by pressing Back . • T o exit a menu and return to the Start scr een, press . If you leave a menu by pressing , you cancel any changes you made.

[ 29 ] Text entry 4 Text en try There are two ways to enter lette rs and numbers into your phone: • Standard text input - for making entries in the phone book. • Pre dict ive t ext in put - for writ ing t ext m essa ges, pict ure m essa ges, and e-mails.
[ 30 ] Enter numbers (123 mode) To e nt er num be rs: 1 Press and hold to switch to 123 mode . Press the appropriate number key to enter a number . OR While in ABC mode, pr ess and hold the corresponding number key until the number appears. If you make a mistake , press ( Clear ) to eras e that character.
[ 3 1 ] Text entry • ENTER SPACES , PUNCTUATION AND SPECIAL CHARACTERS Depending on the selected display language, the following characters may be available when entering characters from the keypad: Note: Some networks may not support all language-dependent characters and/or se rvices.
[ 32 ] Use special characters While entering text, pre ss (or press and hold , if predictive text is on ) to display special characters. Press again to cycle through all charac ters : Use scroll keys to select the character you want, then press Insert.
[ 33 ] Text entry • WRITE WITH PREDICTIV E TEXT Pred ictive te xt input allows you to write messages much faster than the standard text method. With predictive text input, you only need to press each number key once for each let ter . Y our ph one uses a built-i n dictionary to predict or guess what you are writing.
[ 34 ] 3 Scroll to Pre dict ion off , then press Select . T9 pred ictio n off appears. Tip: Press to turn pr edictive text on and off. Save a word in the dictionary If th e word Optio ns changes to Spell , the word you intended to write is not in the dictionary .
[ 35 ] Text entry Tip: Y ou can switch between uppercase and lowercase standard text input and upperc ase a nd lowercase predictive text input by repeatedly pressing . Write compound words 1 Write the first part of the word and press to accept it. 2 Write the last part of the compound word and pr ess to enter the word an d a space.
[ 36 ] 5 Phone book Y our phone i nclude s a pho ne book t hat ca n sto re u p to 200 entries (names a nd associated phone numbers) . In addition, the phone book can store a n e -ma il address for a name. • An entry in the ph one book can consist of a number only or a name and a numb er .
[ 37 ] Phone book Quickly save a name and number This method is ca lled quick save . 1 Enter the phone number using the keypad. 2 Press Save . 3 Enter a na me and press OK . Save an entry using the phone book menu 1 Press Names to enter the phone book.
[ 38 ] Recall information with shortcuts Y ou may want to use some of these shortcuts, or alternate methods for recalling a number . •P r e s s Names , enter the first letter of the name, scroll to the name, and press to dial the number .

[ 40 ] • CHECK MEMORY ST ATUS Y ou can check how much of your ph one book’s memory is free and how much has bee n used. 1 Press Names and scroll to Options .
[ 4 1 ] Call log 6 Call log Your phone provides a c a ll log that r egisters information about calls you make and receive. The call log keeps track of the following: • Missed calls • Received calls • Dialed calls Note: This function only works in digital networ ks and only when caller ID is enabled.
[ 42 ] • CHECK MISSED CALLS If you do not answer a call, the message Missed ca lls appears on your phone’s screen, along with the number of calls missed. Y our phone stores the las t ten numbe rs associated with calls you have m issed. To check missed calls: 1 Press Menu 2-1 ( Menu > Ca ll log > Missed c alls ).
[ 43 ] Call log 1 Press Menu 2-4 ( Men u > Call l og > Clear c all list s ). 2 Use or to scroll through th e options list. The li st incl udes: All , Missed , Received , and Dialed .
[ 44 ] Caution: If you sele ct the Clear timers option, the action cannot be undone. If you use the call timers to log the amount of time spent on calls, you may want to record the information in the call time rs befor e you clea r them. Clear call timers 1 Press Menu 2-5-3 ( Menu > Call log > Call timers > Cle ar timers ).
[ 45 ] Messages 7 Messages Y ou can use mobile messages to keep in touch with friends, family and business associates. Y our ph one allows you to do the following: • V oi ce mail • Send and receiv.
[ 46 ] Save the voice mailbox number As part of your network’s voice mail feature, your service provider give s you a voice mailbox phone number . Save this number in your phone to make getting your voice m essages quick and convenient. 1 Press Menu 1-8-2 ( Menu > Messages > V oice message s > V oic e mailbox number ).
[ 47 ] Messages Understand messaging Message recipients: The ph one to which you send a message must support messages. The recipi ent may not receive the SMS message you send if the recipie nt’s account is with a different service provider or of a different protocol.
[ 48 ] Tip: When writing messages, you can switch between uppercase and lowercase standard text input and uppercase and lowercase predictive text input by repeatedly pressing . Organize messages using folders Y our phone has folders for managing text messages.
[ 49 ] Messages THE OUTBOX FOLDE R The outbox stores messa ges you have written, sent, edited a nd f orw arde d. Messages in the outbox are not saved messages.
[ 50 ] 1 Press Menu , select Messages , then select Wri te message . The messa ge screen appears. 2 Enter a message of up to 1 60 characters . A counter in the u pper right corner of the screen shows the number of characters r emaining. 3 When you have finished writing the mess age, press Option s , scroll to Send , th en press Selec t .
[ 5 1 ] Messages Respond to a text message There are many options available for working with text me ssages. For a list of options and their descriptions, see “Options when working with messages” on page 47. REPLY TO THE MESSAGE 1 When re ading the message, press Optio ns .
[ 52 ] WHEN YOUR MEMORY IS FULL When your phone’ s message memory is ful l, one or more messages of th e lowest priority are automatically deleted. When you receive an emer gency message, messages may be deleted f rom any of your message folders. If you have more messages waiting at the network, blin ks on the Start screen.
[ 53 ] Messages 5 Scroll to Se nd , then press Sel ect . 6 Enter or recall the r ecipient’s phone number , then press Se nd . Sending picture message appears. PREVIEW A PICTURE MESSAGE BEFORE SENDING After writing text for your picture message, you can preview the m essa ge before sending it.
[ 54 ] • Contact your service provider to get the e-mail address and gateway number for your phone , and for more information on usin g e-mail. Send an e-mail message 1 Press Menu 1-2 ( Menu > Mess ages > Write e-mail ).
[ 55 ] Messages Edit an existing e-mail message Y ou c an edit an e-mail message by replying to the message or forwarding it. Y ou can edit messages from any folder . Reply to an e-mail message 1 When re ading the message, press Optio ns . 2 Scroll to Reply , then press Sel ect .
[ 56 ] 8 Perso nalization The Noki a 1200 serie s can be easily cus tomized to fit your lifestyle. The display language, ringing tones, audio, and accessory settings (among others) can all be modified to suit your needs. Y our phone h as var ious profiles which allow you to customize ringing and alert tones for different environments.
[ 57 ] P ersonalization Select a profile 1 Quickly press and release the Power key . 2 Use and to move to th e profile you want to use . Profile names are highlighted as you scroll through them. 3 Press Sele ct to activate a profile. Customize a profile 1 Press Menu 3 ( Menu > Pr ofiles ).
[ 58 ] SET THE RINGIN G TONE The ringing tone is the sound your phone makes when you receive a call. Y o u can set the ringin g tone to a specific sound or tune t o personalize how the phone rings. 1 Press Menu 3 ( Menu > Profil es ). Y our ph one lists each profile.
[ 59 ] P ersonalization SET THE MESSAGE ALER T TONE Y ou can set your phone to use a certain tone to indicate an incoming text message. 1 Press Menu 3 ( Menu > Pr ofiles ). 2 Use or to scroll to th e profile for which you w ant to set the messa ge alert tone, an d press Option s .

AUTOM ATIC ANSWER This feature lets your phone answer incoming calls after just one ring when an accessory is connected to th e phone. 1 Press Menu 4-4 ( Menu > Se ttings > Access ory sett ings ).
[ 62 ] Set the display language Y ou ca n choose your ph one’s display language. 1 Press Menu 4-3-1 ( Me nu > Sett ings > Ph one sett ings > Lang uage ).
[ 63 ] P ersonalization 2 Enter the time using an hh:mm format an d press OK . For example, to set your clock to 8:40, enter 08:40 (for am) or 20:40 (for pm). 3 Press OK . Automatic update of time Y o u can set your phone to update the time fro m the netwo rk when yo u turn the phon e on.
[ 64 ] 3 Scroll to Sa ve , then press Select . To erase the welcome note, follow steps 1-2, scroll to Era se , then press Sele ct . Restore factory settings If you have made ch anges to your phone’s profiles (settings), you can restore them to th eir original or factory settings.

[ 66 ] Access menus Y ou can access your phone’s menus while in a call. 1 Press Opt ions . 2 Scroll to Me nu , then pre ss Selec t . To exit the menu s, press Ex it . Note: Do not press the key to ex it the menus or you will e nd your call. Make a new call To make a new call while already in a call, dial the number , then press .
[ 67 ] Advanced calling features Mute the phone’s microphone While in a call, you can mute th e phone’s microphone. •P r e s s Optio ns , scroll to Mute , press Se lect . OR •P r e s s ( Mute ). Use conference call While in a call, you can call another number to add a third par ty to the call.
[ 68 ] 3 Locate the number in your phone book, then press Selec t . The number will appear in th e number prompt. 4 Press OK to call the n umber . END A CONFERENC E CALL To end all calls, press . • USE VOICE PRIVACY The voice privacy f eature encrypts the voice ch annel so that people cannot eavesdrop on your ph one conversations.
[ 69 ] Advanced calling features Learn about call forwarding feature codes Y our n etwork requires separate codes for activating and cancelling the various types of call forwarding. Your carrier can provide you with the necessary featu re codes for these network services.
[ 7 0 ] Activate/cancel call forwarding After you store th e correct feature codes, you can activate (or cancel) call forwarding as follows: 1 Press Menu 4-6-2 ( Menu > Settings > Network s ervices > Call forw arding ). 2 Scroll to the desired c all forwarding option, then press Select .
[ 7 1 ] Advanced calling features Manage calls Call waiting works with both local and long distance calls. • To answer an incoming call, press . • To switch from one call to another , press .
[ 72 ] The phone automatically inserts the feature c ode into the dialing string and dials the phone number . The phone you are calling will n ot display your phone number through caller ID.
[ 73 ] Advanced calling features ACTIVATE A UTOMATIC RE DIAL 1 Press Menu 4-2-1 ( Menu > Setting s > Call se ttings > Automatic redial ). 2 Scroll to On and press Se lect . If the system is busy , your phone makes three additional call attempts.
[ 74 ] Erase 1-touch dialing numbers Y ou can e rase 1-touc h dialing key assignments at any time. 1 Press Names , scroll to 1-t ouch d ialing and press Selec t . 2 Scroll to the key you w ant to erase and press Options . 3 Scroll to Era se and press Select .
[ 75 ] Advanced calling features 2 Select one of the following options, then press Selec t : Set touch tone length Y ou can also set the length of each touch tone. 1 Press Menu 4-3-2-2 ( Menu > S ettin gs > Phon e settin gs > Tou ch tones > To uch tone length ).
[ 76 ] 4 Enter the touch tone string or recall the string from the phone book, and press OK . If you send touch tones while in the analog mode, b e careful not to send confidential information. • LINK PHONE BOOK ENTRIES This feature a llow s you to sto re a ph one n umber in on e phone book locat ion and link it to another phone book entry .
[ 77 ] Advanced calling features Search for a network Press Me nu 5 ( Menu > System ). Y ou have the following three options. Select a public system When you take your phone outside its home system, the phone is said to be roaming . The phon e can searc h for home-type systems (that is , systems of the same type as your home system).
[ 78 ] Y our sele ction remains active until you change it. 2 Scroll to the option you want and press Select . Select digital or analog Y our phone can work in both digital and analog modes.
[ 79 ] Security 10 S e c u r i t y Y our ph one is equipped with different security features that allow you to do the following: • avoid making ac cidental calls • prev ent unauth orized use rs fr.
[ 80 ] • UNDERSTAND THE SECURITY CODE The Security code prevents unauthorized u sers from changing certain important feature settings on your phone. When the phone requires this code, it display s a prompt asking you to enter a Securi ty code. The five-digit default Security code that comes with you r phone is 12345.
[ 8 1 ] Security • Edit : Allows you to e dit an existing call restriction. • Erase : Allows you to erase an exi sting call restriction. Note: When calls are restricted, calls may be possible to the emergency number programmed into your phone (for example, 9 1 1 or other official em ergency number).
[ 82 ] 5 Scroll to the restriction you want to activa te and press Mark . 6 Press Bac k . At Save changes ? , pre ss Ye s . To retu rn to the Start screen, press . Restrict all incoming calls 1 Press Menu 4-5-1-2 ( Me nu > Settin gs > Sec urity setti ngs > Cal l restrictions > Restrict incoming calls ).
[ 83 ] Special features 1 1 Special fe atures This section describes s everal special features, including transmission of business cards, downloading ringing tones, and settin g the alarm clock. • USE THE ALARM CLOCK The alarm clock feature is based on you r phone’s internal clock and sounds an alert at a time you spec ify .
[ 84 ] Note: Do not press Ye s when wireless phone use is prohibited or when it may cause interference or danger . Turn off the alarm clock 1 Press Menu 4-1-1 ( Menu > Setti ngs > Time sett ings > Alarm clock ). 2 Scroll to Off and press Selec t .
[ 85 ] Special features Delete a viewed business card After viewing the business card: 1 Press Bac k . 2 Scroll to Di scard , then press Select . 3 At Di scard b usine ss car d? , pres s OK . • DOWNLOAD A RINGING TONE You can download up to ten ringing tones to replace the personal entries in your list of ringing ton es.
[ 86 ] 12 Prepaid services With prepaid service, you buy wir eless network services in advance. Y our phone works the same way it did before, w ith some additional features. Prepaid service may not be available from your wireless service provider . C ontact your service provider for details.
[ 87 ] Prepaid services 1 Press Menu 7-1 ( Menu > Prepaid > Check account balance ). 2 At Balance number , enter the balance nu mber and press OK . If you have already saved the balance number under Save access phone numbers , (see page 88) the phone will initiate a call to the saved number .
[ 88 ] • SAVE YOUR ACCESS NUMBERS Y o u can check you r prepaid balanc e, add money t o your account, an d ca ll custom er service. T o do that, you first need to save the correct acce ss numbers in your phone. Co ntact your se rvice pr ovider fo r the access n umbers.
[ 89 ] Games 13 Games You can use your phone f or communication and some serious fun. You r phone offers three games: Snake II , Space impact , and Pa ir s I I . Note: Y our phone m ust be switched on to use this function. Do not switch on the phone w hen wireless phone use is prohibited or when it may cause interference or danger .
