1 The Magellan RoadMate 800 is a vehicle-navigatio n aid designed to assist you in arriving at your selected destinations. When using the Magellan RoadMate, these safety rules must be followed to prevent accidents that can result in injur y or death to yourself or others: • When driving, the need to view the display is min imal.

1 Chapter 1: Information 1.1 About Satellite Navigation Global satellit e navigation is an exciting technolo gy , providing enh anced producti vity and accuracy in a vast number of industries. It adds a new level of enjoym ent and safety to a wide range of navigation, sports, and recrea tional activities.
Chapter 1: Information 2 1.3 A W ord on the Sa fe Usage of GPS Maps Just like paper ma ps, maps on GPS devi ces vary greatly in te rms of information included an d visual presen tation. Whether topographica l maps, roadmaps or marine ch arts, each map and the data it presents is design ed for a specific purp ose.
Chapter 1: Information 3 1.6 GPS Maps and Y our Safety Remember , your GPS device is an aid to na vigation. It must be used with common sense, and it is important th at users interpret GPS map data with a critical eye.

Chapter 2: Magellan RoadMate 9 2.8 Using Removable Storage Cards The Magellan RoadMate is equipped with a storage card slot at the top of the unit (see page 6) tha t accepts Secure Digital (SD) cards and Multimedia Cards (MMC). These ca rds are used to backup na vigat ion data and to transfer image files to a nd from the hard disk.
Chapter 2: Magellan RoadMate 10 2.9.1 Removing the Battery Using a small Phillip s sc rewdriver , remove the screw that holds the battery compartment cover in place. Remove the battery compartment cover . Remove the battery . 2.9.2 Installing the Battery Insert the new batt ery with the ba ttery diagram labe l side up and the p ins facing inward .
11 Chapter 3: V ehicle Installation T ake care when mo unting the Magellan RoadMate in your vehi cle, whether using the windshield mount or oth er mount, that it does not obstruct the driver ’ s view of the road.
Chapter 3: V ehicle Installation 12 Then, route the cable along the b ack of the car holder and inse rt it int o the wire catcher . Plug the power adapter into your vehicles cigarette lighter or 12 volt receptacle. Rotate the antenna upward (see p age 13 for proper antenna position).
13 Chapter 4: Antenna Position The antenna on the Magellan RoadMate 800 is design ed in such a way as to receive the satellite signal at the front face of the antenna. It is important to angle the an tenna so that the front face is mostly to ward th e sky .
14 Chapter 5: Magellan RoadMate T ools Installation 5.1 Installing the Software Insert the Magellan RoadMate T ools PC Ap pl ication CD into your PC’ s CD drive. The setup applica tion will begin automatically . If it does not, browse your computer’ s CD drive and double-cli ck on the setup.
15 Chapter 6: Magellan RoadMate Music Manager The Magellan RoadMate Music Manager enables you to transfer song files in MP3 or WMA format from your computer to your Magellan RoadMate, or fr om your Magellan RoadMate to your computer .
16 Chapter 7: Music Player The Magellan RoadMate Music Play er enables you to play music files in MP3, or WMA format, st ored on the hard disk of your Magellan RoadMate.
Chapter 7: Music Player 17 Select Playlist The Playlist menu w ill appear . T o exit from the playlist menu, select ESC . 7.2.1 Play T o hear a previously created playlist, select Play . Use the Up or Down arrow to select the desired playlist. Select OK .
Chapter 7: Music Player 18 7.2.5 Rename If you want to change the name of a playlist, select Rename . Select the playlist you wish to rename and then, select OK . Use the backspace key (<-) to erase the name; and the keypa d to enter a new name for your playlist .
Chapter 7: Music Player 19 7.5 Equalizer The Equalizer provides advanc ed sound opti ons so you can customize the quality of th e playback. The equalizer will only be available for MP3 format sound files.
20 Chapter 8: Magellan RoadMate Photo Manager The Magellan RoadMate Photo Man age r enables you to transfer image file s in ei ther JPG or BMP format from your computer to your Magellan RoadMate , or from your Magellan RoadMate to your computer .
21 Chapter 9: Photo Viewer The Magellan RoadMate Photo Viewer enable s you to view image files in JPG and BM P format, stored on th e hard disk of your Magellan RoadMate or an optional st orage card.
Chapter 9: Photo Viewer 22 9.1.3 Slideshow Press the Slideshow button to cycle through all th e photos in the Pictures folder automatically . 9.1.4 Pan If you enlarge an image beyond the scre en boundaries, press t h e Pan button to enable image scrolling.

A thumbnail o f the image will b e displayed alo ng with the width and height in pixels, the size, and the format (image type). When viewing the properties for folder s, width, height, and format are not shown.
24 Chapter 10: Magellan RoadMate POI Manager The Magellan RoadMate POI Manager enables yo u to transfer custom points of intere st files from your computer to your Magellan RoadMate. Before we add any custom POI’ s to the unit, you sh ould understand how the POI Man ager plots POIs.
Chapter 10: Magellan RoadMate POI Manager 25 10.3 Altitude Each location can also have an Altitude. Altitude i s expressed by how far the point is above or below the level of the ocean, or Sea Level. For example, Los An geles, California is about 300 feet above sea level.
Chapter 10: Magellan RoadMate POI Manager 26 10.4 Opening a POI File When you start the POI Manager the contents of your “My POI’ s” folder will be displayed. Th is is the default locatio n for storing custom POI files. Locate the POI files you wish to load.

29 Chapter 11: Navigation Basic Operation 11.1 T urning the Magellan Ro adMate On Out of the Box Slide the RESET switch, located at the top of the unit (see “T op View” on page 6) to position “1”. If power is connec ted properly or if the ba ttery is charged suffic iently , the Magellan screen will appear follo wed by the Warning scr een.
Chapter 11: Navigation Basic Operation 30 11.6 Inputting T ext Characters Whenever you need to inpu t names, street addresses, etc., the Magellan RoadM ate will disp lay a keyboard. T ouch the letter you want and, if you make a mistake, use the Backspace key to go back one character at a time.
Chapter 11: Navigation Basic Operation 31 11.9 What Is QuickSpell? The Magellan RoadMate uses QuickSpell t echn ology to provide you wi th the fastes t me thod possible to enter characters. QuickSpell eliminates the possibility of a misspelled word or look ing for a city or str eet that is not in the loaded database.

33 Chapter 12: T raveling 12.1 Guidance Information Screens The Magellan RoadMate has three scre ens you can use to assist you in traveling to your destination: the Map screen, the Maneuver List screen, and the T rue View 3D/Split T ru eView screen. Map : When a new destination is selected an d calculated, the Map screen is displaye d.
Chapter 12: T raveling 34 12.2 Map Screen The Map screen is the most commonly used screen in the M agellan RoadMate and pr ovides yo u with detailed in formation about where you are a nd where you are going. † By touching the POI icon on the screen, you can get information and route to it.
Chapter 12: T raveling 35 12.4 Changing th e Map Zoom Levels While viewing the Map screen, you ca n zoom in (enlarge the map) by pressing the + (plus) key or zoom out (shrink the map) by pressing the - (minus) key . Note: The Zoom In and Z oom Out keys can also be used the scroll through long lists.
Chapter 12: T raveling 36 12.6 T rueView 3D Screen The Magellan RoadMate uses T rueView 3D technology to disp lay a three-dime nsional pictu re of the next mane uver . The T rueView 3D screen ca n be viewed only after a rout e has been calculated. From the Map screen, press the VIEW key twice to view the T rueView 3D screen.
Chapter 12: T raveling 37 12.7 Choosing the Route Method Every route is calculated based on the Route Method criteria sel ected. Every time a new dest ination is selected, the Magellan RoadMate prompts you for the method that will be used to calculate the route.
Chapter 12: T raveling 38 12.10 Detouring from the Planned Route If you exit the pl anned route, th e Magellan RoadMa te will get you back on cou rse in one of three ways. 1. If, while driving , you detour from the planned ro ute, the Magellan RoadMate will a utomatically re calculate the ro ute based on your new vehicle posi tion.
Chapter 12: T raveling 39 12.12 Displaying Information About Y our Present Location Anytime that you want to view information about your present location you can press the LOCATE key .
Chapter 12: T raveling 40 Select Dining, A TM, Gas... . Select the desired POI category . A list of the nearest POI’ s is displayed. Use the Navigation key to scroll th e list up or down (if necessary) and select the desired P OI. The Magellan RoadMate will calculate a new ro ut e to the selected PO I from your current position.
Chapter 12: T raveling 41 Select the distance of the detour . Select 3 miles , 5 miles , or 10 miles . Or , you can enter a custom distance. Select Custom and select the custom distance. Enter the num ber of miles for your d etour and t hen select OK .

The Magellan RoadMate w ill calculate the route. Whe n the calcula tions are comp lete, the Map screen will be displayed.

Chapter 13: Selecting Destinations 51 13.5.3 List Addresses List Addresses shows all entries stored in your address book. It does not include previous de stinations but do es include those entries designated as Favorites. From the Destination screen, select Address Book then, select List Addresses .

Chapter 13: Selecting Destinations 58 13.5.5.2 Optimizing a T rip Wit h Route Optimization, you can sort the destinat ions in your trip from closest to farthest. From the T rip Plan ner screen, select Edit . Select the trip to opt imize. Select Optimize .

Select t he destinatio n you wish t o change, an d select Move Up from the pop-up menu. When you have finished, select Save and you are returned to the T rip Planner screen.

Chapter 13: Selecting Destinations 63 Enter the name of the POI. 13.6.1.1 Nearest Selecting Nearest will list the POIs ma tching th e name you entered from closest to farthest from your current position. Select Nearest . Use the Navigation key to scroll the list up or down (if necessary) and select the desired POI.
Chapter 13: Selecting Destinations 64 13.6.1.3 Select Category Selecting Select Category enables you to narrow th e list of POIs by sele cting the category of the name you spelled. Select Select Category . Use the Navigation key to scroll the list up or down and select th e desire d POI categor y .
Chapter 13: Selecting Destinations 65 A list of all the POI’ s in the selected c ategory nearest to your current positi on is displa yed. Select the POI fr om the li st. Select the desired Route Meth od. The Magellan RoadMate will calculate the route.

Sele ct the desir ed POI from th e list. Select Route to go to the sele cted Address, or select Cancel to return to the Select Custom POI menu.

70 Chapter 14: Navigation Options Navigation Options are only available when you ar e in Navigation Mode. When going to the Main Menu from the Music Pl ayer or from the Photo Viewer , th is option will be grayed out. T o access these features, press the MENU key on the unit and select Navigation Options .
Chapter 14: Navigation Options 71 Select Select a POI File . Use the Navigation key to scroll the list up or do wn (if necessary) and select a POI file. W ith the file selected, you are returned to the Custom POIs menu. Select Display Categories . The categories you created are displayed in the same way as the built-in POIs.
Chapter 14: Navigation Options 72 With the POI alerts set, you can now choose at what point you will be alert ed. Select Alert Parameters . Select the POI category to customize. The Detection Angle is set to alert you when you are within so many degrees of the POI.
Chapter 14: Navigation Options 73 Use the numeric keypad to enter the number of degrees in which to set the alert. When you have finished, select OK . The First W arning is set to alert you when you ar e within a certain number of feet from the POI. Select First W arning .
Chapter 14: Navigation Options 74 The Last W arning is set as a final alert when you are within a certain number of feet from the POI. Select Last W arning . Use the numeric keypad to enter the number of feet in which to aler t you. When you have finished, select OK .
Chapter 14: Navigation Options 75 14.1.3 Map Options Map Options ena ble you to determin e the be havior of the Map while you are driving. Select Map Options . With Scrolling enabled , the vehi cle positi on icon wil l always remain in the same position with the map scrolling, or moving as wh ile the vehicle is in motion.
Chapter 14: Navigation Options 76 Select Day Screen to choose a color scheme for the map while you are driving during the day . Select Night Screen to select a color scheme for driving at night.

Automatic Re-Route will cause the Magellan RoadMate to try up to three times to automatically r e-route to the d estination when it has detecte d that the vehicle has deterred from the calculated route.
Chapter 14: Navigation Options 78 When you have finished, select Save . When you encounter traffic, and th e set time has elapsed, the Deto ur icon will flash on the Map screen. T ouch the icon on the sc re en to have the Magellan Roa dMate calculate the detour .
Chapter 14: Navigation Options 79 14.1.10 Tone Options As you approach a maneuver , an audible alert so unds to let you know to make the maneuver . Select To n e O p t i o n s . Select either Bell , Chime , or Beep . When you have finished, select Save .

Chapter 14: Navigation Options 81 Select Code . Use the keypad to enter the unlock co de. W hen you have finished, select OK . Select Unlock . The database is un locked. Select OK. Select Europe and then select Switch . Select Ye s . After the uni t has powered down, turn the unit back on and the n ew map will begin loading.
Chapter 14: Navigation Options 82 14.1.14 Automatic Volume The Magellan RoadMate can be set to auto matically increase the volume when the vehicle exceeds 45 MPH in order to compensate for road noise. Select Automatic V olume . Select the number increment by which to increase the volume.
Chapter 14: Navigation Options 83 14.1.15.2 Restore T o restore the fi les to the hard disk, select Backup and Restore then, select Restore . If you do not h ave a card inserted, you wil l be prompted to insert a card. Insert a card and reselec t Restore .
Chapter 14: Navigation Options 84 Select Tr i p C o m p u t e r . 14.2.1 Current Trip When you begin a n ew trip and you need to record the information, access the T rip Computer . There you can save the information di splayed for the curr ent trip (i f needed) and r eset the T rip Computer to zero in preparat ion for your new trip.
Chapter 14: Navigation Options 85 While the T rip Computer is in a “Stopped” state, select Start to continu e recording the current trip or select re set to begin a new trip. 14.2.1.2 Saving the Current T rip Report When you have finished with yo ur trip, you can save the informat ion for later viewi ng.
Chapter 14: Navigation Options 86 The saved T rip Report is displayed. Press the ESCAPE key when you are finished to view the trip and retu rn to the T rip Com puter screen. 14.2.1.5 Deleting a T rip Report Select the T rip Report to be dele ted. Select Delete .
87 Chapter 15: System Settings The System Settings Menu co ntains system wide customizat ion features which include: Brightness, Power Management, Password, and Language. T o access these features, press the MENU key on the unit and select System Settings .

Then, from the Set New Password screen, select OK . 15.4 Language T o change the language for the menu text and voice prompts fo r navig ation, select Language .
