Fundamentals 4 Fundamentals T urning the T riton on 1. Press and hold the power button until the T riton splash screen is displayed. T urning the T riton off When turning off the T riton you can select to have it shutdown or go into suspend mode. 1. Press the Power button and the T riton will begin the shutdown sequence.

Fundamentals 7 Flashlight The T riton has a three L ED flashlight located at the top of the receiver . This can be used in emergency situations when you ne ed quick access to a flashlight. T o conserve battery life it is recommended that you use the flashlight only when needed.

Fundamentals 9 Data Fields The Map screen, Large Data screen, the Compass screen , and the Satellite Status screen have data fields that can be customized to display navigation information. Y ou can change what information is being displayed from 20 different data type options.
Fundamentals 10 Battery Life The following are thin gs you can do to conserve the ba ttery life in your Magellan T riton. T urn off backlight during daytime use. 1. Press the Backlight button (top left side of the receiver) to cycle through the backlight intensities.

The Satellite Status Screen The Satellite Status Screen graphically displays the satellites and their signal strength that is being used to compute your location.
Navigation Screens 18 Explanation of Data Field T ypes Latitude (LA T) Latitude is the coordinate measurement of North and South . The latitude lines run parallel to th e equator . They range from 0° (th e Equator) to 90° N/S (the Poles) Longitude (LON) Longitude is the coordinate measurement of East a nd West.
Navigation Screens 19 Cross T rack Error (XTE) Cross T rack Error measures how far the user is off the trail or route. If no Go T o or Route is set, this will appear blank or dashes. Elevation Elevation measures the height abo ve or below Sea Level whic h is 0.

Map Screen 21 Customizing the Map Screen Data Fields 1. Press ENTER . 2. Scroll down the contextual menu and select Customize Fields . 3. The data field on the le ft is highlighted. Press ENT ER to customize that field. T o select the data field on the left, use the cursor control to highlight t he field on the right and press ENTER .

Using the Keyboard 29 Shift Key Medium Blue With alphabetic characters shown, shifts between upper and lower case characters. With extended characters shown, shifts between two character sets. Not functional when numeric or symbol characters are displayed.
Using the Keyboard 30 Date Entry The Magellan T riton uses a standard calendar di splay to enter dates fo r local information and waypoint data. Use the left and right arrows to ch ange months. W ith the desired month displayed, select the date to be entered.
Profiles 31 Profiles The Magellan T riton gives you the means to set up three profiles; Hiki ng, Marine and Geoca ching. Each profile contains custom settings that you can select . Y ou can customize the profiles to fit your particular needs. Y ou will notice that the backgr ound colors for the screen s change depending upon the profile selected.

Routes 46 Routes There are three types o f routes that are commo nly used in the Magellan T riton, Go T o route, Multileg route, and a Backtrack route. Backtrack routes are described in the chapter on the Map screen. A Go T o route is the simplest route possible.

Trails 51 Tr a i l s As you travel with the Magel lan T riton on and computing your position, the Magell an T riton automatically drops electronic breadcrumbs to record your travels. These breadcrumbs are temporary waypoints that are created and sto red while you travel.
