eXplorist 210 GPS Receiver 8 The eXplorist 210 uses two AA ba tteries that a re installed as shown in the accompanying diagra m. Be su re to observe the proper polarit y when installing the batteries. Under normal operatin g conditions you can expect to get more than 14 ho urs of batt ery life when using fresh batterie s.
eXplorist 210 GPS Receiver 9 Connecting to a Person al Computer (requires optional USB cable) T urn your eXplorist off and conn ect the round connector of the eXplorist data cable to the back of your eXplorist and tighte n the locking screw . There are alignm ent tabs on th e connector to make sure that the co nnector is installed properl y .
10 The eXplorist 210 uses information from the GPS satellit e s orbiting the ear th to provide you with detailed information ab out your exact location . This is the foundatio n that your eXplorist w ill use to provide you with th e necessary informat ion to ar rive at your destination.
Using the eXplorist 210 11 Step T w o: Where Do Y ou Want T o Go? Now that the eXplorist knows whe re you are, you need to te ll it where you want to go. There are many different ways you can do this, bu t the simplest and most commonl y used is a “GOTO” route.
Using the eXplorist 210 12 It was mentioned earlier that your eXplorist is constantl y computing your pr esent position and that you can save your position by using the MARK button. Now imagine that your eX plorist aut omatically saved your com- puted positions as you moved along the trail.
13 T o turn the eXplorist o n, press the POWER button on the top right side. T o prevent the eXplorist from be ing turned on acci dentally , draining the batteri es, you need to press ENTER when the Startup screen is displayed.
Starting Up 14 The display backlig ht has three levels of intensity: off, low and high. When the eXplori st is first turned on, the display backlight is off. Press the LIGHT button on the top left side of th e eXplorist to turn the backlight on low . Pressing the LIGHT button a second time sets the backlig ht to high.
Starting Up 15 Compute Initi al Position. For this operation, it is best if you are outside and have a clear , unobstructed view of the sky . Without a clear view , this will take much longer and could resul t in the eXplorist being unable to compute the initial posit ion automaticall y .
Starting Up 16 If the eXplorist is unab le to compute your in itial fix in a few minu tes: If the eXplorist determines that it is unable to track the satellites within two minutes, it will present you with the following screens in an effort to better determine its approximate location.
Starting Up 17 Enter the Date. Use the arrow joystick to set the date d isplayed to the current date. Arrow Joystick Up: Increases the highlighted number Arrow Joystick Down: Decrea ses the highlighte.
Starting Up 18 Cold vs. W arm Start. When the eXplorist is turned on, one of the first th ings it does is to find out wh at satellites are over head, along wit h their relative position.
19 The eXplorist has three navigat ion screens as well as a Satellit e Status screen that can be acce ssed by pressing the NA V button. Each screen provides the same information in a di fferent format giving you the choice of choosing the screen that best suits your needs.
Navigation Screens 20 • Press MENU and select Customize page to cha nge the inform ation displayed a t the bottom of the screen. • Press MENU and select Map Setup to change the orientation of the screen as well as the primary usage (land or marine).
Navigation Screens 21 In the Cur sor mode, you ha ve a cursor icon displayed that you can use to pan around the map. The information displayed at the bottom of the screen provide you with the heading and distance the cursor is at from your present position.
Navigation Screens 22 The informat ion displayed at the b ottom of the screen can be customized to change what is shown in the two map informat ion fields.
Navigation Screens 23 Y ou can choose to display information ab out the street you are on instead of displaying the two da ta fields at the bottom of th e display . T o display street information: 1. While viewing the Map screen, press MENU . 2. Use the Arrow joystick to highlight Customize page .
Navigation Screens 24 The Map screen can be changed to be prim arily used on l and (default) or marine. When in land usage, land areas are displayed as white ar eas on the displ ay and water is displayed as dark gray . The opposite is tr ue when the map is set for marine us ag e.
Navigation Screens 25 As you move, your eXplorist is recording your journey (track). Y ou can select how often the track points are recorded. In Auto mod e, the eXploris t doesn’t save track points when you are traveling in a straight line and only a few as you make turns.
Navigation Screens 26 The Compass screen provides an easy-to-use graphical compa s s that shoul d be familiar to most GPS users. Highlights of the Compass screen: • With an active route, th e top of th e Compa ss screen displays the na me of the destination.

Navigation Screens 29 Whenever you begin a trip that you want to record how f ar you have travelled, you will want to reset the trip odomet er to zero . T o reset the trip odometer: 1. While viewing the Position screen, press MENU . 2. Use the Arro w joystick to highlight Reset Trip .
30 The eXplorist has a file stru cture system that is unlike any other filing system used be fore on a GPS receiver . It is based on the file system that you are probably familiar with from using your personal computer . This graphic displa ys the basic layout of the file structure that is internal to the eXplorist.
eXplorist 210 GPS File Structure 31 • When retrieving or saving a PO I, the eXplorist automaticall y goes to the default POI file wher e the POI will be fou nd or saved. NOTE : The default file is set at the factor y but you can change the default file to be used by accessing Preferences > Active Setup.
eXplorist 210 GPS File Structure 32 • T rack logs are saved differently from PO Is and routes in that there is only one track log pe r file. Also, you can’t set a default file fo r track logs. The eXplorist automatically a ccesses the internal T racklog folder .
33 Whether driving in a car , hi king on the trail or out for an afternoon sail, you are going to want to save places you’ve been in your eXplori st so you can go back to th em in the future. This is the fundam ental startin g point for any GPS navigator .
Points of Interest 34 Normally , marking you position is sim ply a two button pro cess, MARK and ENTER . However , sometimes you will want to personalize the POI you ar e marking to make it easier to identi fy later . Y ou are able to change the icon, change the name, and create a me ssage.
Points of Interest 35 This method of marking a position would normally be used when you have gotten the coordinates for the position from a map or chart. It is also possible th at you have gotten the coordinates from a friend and want to save this POI in yo ur eXplorist database .
Points of Interest 36 This gives you a way of marking a posi tion, other then your present position , by moving the cu rsor around the map to a place you want to create a POI. 1. While viewing the Map screen, use the Arrow joystick to put the eXplorist into Cursor mode.
Points of Interest 37 All of the POI’ s that you have saved as well as backg ro und map POI’ s that came wi th your eXplorist can be accessed using the POI database. Once the database has been accessed and the POI selected you can view or edit the POI.
Points of Interest 38 Searching for a preloaded POI using the Neare st option is similar to sea rching for user -entered PO I’ s with an additional step. Preloaded POI’ s have been categorized into five cate gories (Cities, Highways, Airports, W at erways and Parks) an d you need to select the category t hat the POI will be fo und in.
Points of Interest 39 POI’ s that you have saved can be edited to change the ic on, name, elevation and message. Y ou c an also change the location but keep in mind that this effe ctively is creating a new POI in a new location. 1. Press MENU . 2. Use the Arro w joystick to highlight Pts of Interest .
Points of Interest 40 POI’ s that you have saved can be delete d using this operation. Y ou may want to delete a POI to make it easier to search for a POI you created if you have a lot of them. POI’ s that have been deleted cannot be restored. Y ou will need to input the inform ation for a POI you delete if you want it back.
Points of Interest 41 POI’ s that have been preloaded as part of the background map can be saved as a user -entered POI. This does not delete a preloaded POI (preloaded POI’ s ca n not be deleted) it just copies it to the My Points of Interes t portion of the database.
Points of Interest 42 POI’ s that have been preload ed as part of the backgro un d map can be viewed on the Map screen to assist you in locating the POI. 1. Press MENU . 2. Use the Arro w joystick to highlight Pts of Interest . 3. Press ENTER . 4. Use the Arro w joystick up/down to highlight Background Map .
Points of Interest 43 Y ou can select whether a user -entered POI is displayed or hidden while viewing the Map screen. In the upper left corner of the POI Save screen (next to the icon field) is a checkbox tha t indicated if the POI will be vi sible on the map.
44 Routes are the least understood and one of the most important functions of a GPS receiver . The better you understand ro utes and how to use the m, the more enjoyment you will receive from using your eXplori st. The easiest, and most common form of a route is a GOTO route.
Routes 45 The instructions h ere describe the most co mmon, and easiest way to create a GOTO route. 1. Press GOTO . 2. Use the POI database to select the POI to be the destination. Note : Detailed instructions fo r searching the POI database can be found in the Points of Interest section of this manual.
Routes 46 This will create a GOTO route to a map obje ct (city , high way , user POI, etc.) that you have indicated by moving the crosshair cursor on the Map screen over the map obj ect. 1. While viewing the Map screen, use the Arrow joystick causing the eXploris t to go into Cursor mode.
Routes 47 The eXplorist will provide you an empt y list for your route and you can use the POI’ s saved in the POI database to create the route. All the tools you’d need to create the route will be descri bed here. Steps in creating a multi-leg route: 1.
Routes 48 An active route is the route you are presently navigating on. Anytime you activate a route, it will re main the active route until yo u either turn it off (deactivate) or activate a new route. GOTO’ s are automatica lly activated when they are created while multi-l eg rout es need to be activated manually .
Routes 49 When a route is created it can have ma ny different legs to the route, each leg with its own destination. If during your travels you wanted to skip some of the legs you can select the leg that you want to proceed to next. An example would be your planne d route starts at your campsite.
Routes 50 Saved routes can be edited to add a new leg at the end of the route ( <Add POI> ) remove a leg ( Delete POI ), insert a new leg ( Insert POI ) or change the destination from one POI to another ( Replace POI ). 1. Press MENU . 2. Use the Arro w joystick to highlight Routes .
Routes 51 Reversing a route takes a saved route an d recreates it in reverse order . The sample route th at was discussed earlier , Camp > Bridge > Mar ker > Rang er > Swim , would now be Swim > Ra nger > Marker > Bridge > Camp.
Routes 52 This provides you with a means of moving a route from one file to another . 1. Press MENU . 2. Use the Arro w joystick to highlight Routes . 3. Press ENTER . 4. Locate the file that contains th e rout e you want to move. (The eX plorist will automa tically open the default file.
Routes 53 Viewing the route on the map gives you a way of gra phically seeing the legs of the ro ute as the y appear on the map. 1. Press MENU . 2. Use the Arro w joystick to highlight Routes . 3. Press ENTER . 4. Locate the file that contains th e route.
54 As you are moving, the eXplorist continuo usly records your track. Much like leaving breadcrumbs on the trail that you can use later to find your way back, the eXplorist leaves “el ectroni c breadcrumbs” on th e map. The advantage here is that you don’ t have to worry about animals coming along and eating your return route markers.
T rack Logs 55 The instruction s here describe the most common, and easiest way to create a GOTO route. Press MENU . 1. Use the Arro w joystick to highlight Track Log . 2. Press ENTER. 3. Highlight Ac tive Track . 4. Press ENTER . 5. Highlight Stop Logg ing or Resum e Logging .
T rack Logs 56 This will save your active track log with a name you en ter that you can use at some time in the future. This does not erase your presentl y active rout e; only saves the current active track and adds it to the list of available track logs.
T rack Logs 57 BackT rack routes use yo ur active track to create a ro ute back to where you st arted, turning around and following the electronic breadc rumb trail that the eXplorist dropped. 1. Press MENU . 2. Use the Arro w joystick to highlight Track Log .
T rack Logs 58 This function t akes the track log and turns it into a mu lti-leg rout e that is saved in your route l ist. From here , the route can be edited if necessary . Note : Convert to Route is available for both act ive track logs and track logs you have saved.
T rack Logs 59 It has been mentioned be fore that you can convert saved track logs to a ro ute and view saved track logs on the map. There are th ree functions uni que to saved track lo gs that you can perfor m: following, reversin g, and deleting the tr ack.
T rack Logs 60 Use this function to remove track logs that have been previously saved and are no longer needed. 1. Press MENU . 2. Use the Arro w joystick to highlight Track Log . 3. Press ENTER . 4. Use the Arrow joystick to highlight any track lo g you have previously saved.
61 The eXplorist has a set of advanced features that provides you with additional features to enhance the us e of your eXplorist. The advanced features are accessed from the Main Me nu and include: • Fish/Hunt: This will di splay the best hunting and fishing ti mes for a position and date that you enter .
Advanced Features 62 1. With the Fish/Hunt sc reen displayed, highlight the At field. 2. Press ENTER . 3. Select a POI from the POI database. 1. With the Fish/H unt screen displaye d, highlight the On field. 2. Press ENTER . 3. Use the Arro w joystick to change the date.
Advanced Features 63 1. With the Sun/Moon screen displayed, highli ght the On field. 2. Press ENTER . 3. Use the Arrow joystick to change the date. Up/Down changes the data at the curso r position; Left/Right moves the cursor . 4. When the date is correct, press ENTER .
Advanced Features 64 When the eXplorist is placed in the simulator mode, it simulates move ment along a predefined or saved route. 1. Press MENU . 2. Use the Arro w joystick to highlight Adv. Features . 3. Press ENTER . 4. Use the Arro w joystick to highlight Simulate .
Advanced Features 65 For this feature to operate properly , you must have yo ur eXplorist connected to a personal computer through the computer USB port 1. T urn the eXploris t off. 2. First connect the PC interf ace cable to the connector on the back of the eXplorist.
Advanced Features 66 Using the personal computer , you have complete access to moving, re naming, modifying, or deleting any of the saved files. Special care should be taken whenever wo rking with saved files as unwanted results may occur . It is advised that you backup any files tha t yo u plan on editing in case something unexpected happens.
67 V ery si mply , geocaching is a fun, rec reational game that yo u can play using your eXplorist receiver . It’ s been referred to as “el ectronic treasure h unting” and is just t hat. Caches are hi dden all over the world and your task is to find them, armed only with the coor dinates of the cache and your Magellan eXplorist.
Magellan Geocache Manager 68 1. Access the Magellan Geocac he Manager by usin g the Start button on the Windows toolbar . 2. Under “Programs” select ‘Magellan > eXplorist 210 > Magellan Geocache Mana ger’. 3. The Magellan Geocache Manager will open and an empty list of geocache points is displayed .
Magellan Geocache Manager 69 Using the icons at the top of the wi ndow is the easiest way of accessi ng the most common functions. The following lists the icons, their hotkey equivalent, and their usage. Magellan Geocache Manager T ools Icon Name Hotkey Description New Ctrl+N Creates a new database for saving geocache points.
Magellan Geocache Manager 70 This is a picture of a sample geocache file with a list of geocache points. Y ou can modify this list by editing, deletin g, or adding points to it. Y ou can also add other downloaded geocache point files to this list but you will need to follow the instructions provided below .
Magellan Geocache Manager 71 1. T urn the eXplorist off and connect it to the USB port on your computer . 2. T u rn the eXplorist o n. If connected co rrectly , it will begi n in the US B File T ransfer mo de or the Communications menu is displayed. (If the Commu ni cations menu is shown, select U SB File T ransfer and press ENTER.
72 MapSend® is the Magellan line of de tailed digital maps for Magella n hand-held GPS receivers. The core MapSend product li ne includes street maps for dr iving, topographic maps for hiking, camping, and hunting, and fresh/salt water m aps for fishing an d boating.
Using the eXplorist with MapSend 73 Saving Map Regions. Before saving the reg ion, review the docume ntation that came with MapSend to set what information will be saved with the region.
Using the eXplorist with MapSend 74 The Magellan Conversion Manager will automatically search for detail maps (*.imi) or ba ckground map s (* .mgi) on your computer ava ilable for upl oading. The Map regio n selection wind ow is displayed. In this window you will select which map regions that wil l be uploaded.
Using the eXplorist with MapSend 75 Y ou can transfer POIs, routes and track logs to and from MapSend and the e Xplorist using the Magellan Conversion Manager .
Using the eXplorist with MapSend 76 The process for transferring from from MapSend to the eXplorist is similar to the one described above. 1. Open the MapSend software program. Thi s procedur e will discuss send ing waypo ints to the eXplorist. Use similar steps for transf erring routes and tracks.
77 The Preferences portion of the eXplorist provide s the tools to persona lize the eXplorist to your usage and needs. Ther e are tools that are designed to give you full flexibility over its use as we ll as pe rforming maintanence on the internal memor y should the need ari se.
Preferences 78 When to use Restar t GPS : • When the eXplorist h as been moved more then 500 miles (804.67 km) while tur ned off. • When the eXplorist is sluggish and takes mo re then a few minutes to compute its first position fix when turned on.
Preferences 79 Restarting the GPS: 1. Press MENU . 2. Use the Arro w joystick to highlight Preferences . 3. Press ENTER . 4. Use the Arro w joystick to highlight Restart GPS . 5. Press ENTER . 6. Region. Use the Arrow joystick to highlight the regio n of the world for your present location.
Preferences 80 Whenever you need to access POIs, routes, and other sa ved data, the eXplorist automatically goes to the default file for the particular piece of data you are working wi th. These default locations may not mee t your requirement s as to where you are savi ng your data.
Preferences 81 The eXplorist comes with a ba sema p already installed but you may use MapSend Worldwide software (purchased separa tely) to define you r own basemap. Y ou can use Active Setup to select the background map you want to use if you have stored a new one.
Preferences 82 Y ou can set the North Reference used by the eXplor ist to be either magnetic north or T rue North. 1. Press MENU . 2. Use the Arro w joystick to highlight Preferences . 3. Press ENTER . 4. Use the Arro w joystick to highlight Map Units .
