11 1 Introduction 1.1 Equipme nt Require ments a nd Speci f icat ions Thank you f or purchasing the SIMM (Single Inlin e Memory Module) for Intelligen t Printer Data Stream (IPDS). T his provides your printer with h igh quality IBM host connectivity print output.

13 2 Installation 2.1 Before Installing the SIMM for IP DS Installing the new SIMM for IPDS may restore the printer’s default m enu settings. Follow the instru ctions in the follow ing section to print out the current user default settings and installed printer options before installing the new SIMM for IPDS.
14 2.3 Installing th e SIMM for IPD S War ning: The SIMM for IP DS is easily damaged by static electricity . Make sure to touch the printer’s m etal cabinet before handling the SIMM or wear an anti-static w rist strap. Follow these instructions to install the SIMM: 1.
15 3. Turn the printer power OFF (O) and unplug th e printer po wer cord. 4. Disconnect all cables from th e back of the prin ter. 5. You m ust access the printer sy stem board. Refer to y our printer User's Guide and follow the ins tructions on how to acces s the printer sy stem board.
16 7. Press the optio n do w n toward the sy stem board until it snaps into place. Make sure both m etal clips on th e connector are f astened and th e two pin s on the conne c tor a re p ushed thr ough the ho les in t he opt ion. Re fer to the figur e matching your printer.
17 11. Plug in the printer pow er cord . 12. Turn the pri nter pow er ON (I). Note: If all diam onds rem ain display ed on th e printer operator pan el or if the printer does not warm the en gine and display Ready on th e operato r p anel, follow th e steps in the next section to remove the SIMM and repeat the steps in this section to reinstall it.
18 Note: After verify ing the installation, y ou may want to set your other printer settings that w ere different from th e factory def aults. See the m enu settin gs page y ou printed before star ting this installation for comparison.
19 2.4 Remov ing the SIMM for IPD S War ning: The option card is easily damaged by static electricity . Before handling the cards, be sure to touch the printer’s metal cabinet or put on an an ti- static wrist strap. 1. Turn the printer power OFF (O) and unplug th e printer power cord.
20 4. Refer to the figu re below for your printer to locate the SIMM for IPDS in the connector sl ot. Push out on th e metal clips at each end of th e connector and rotate the SIMM aw ay f rom the s ystem board. Optra S/Se Optra K 5. Place the SIMM f or IPDS in its or iginal packaging.
21 3 Using the Operator Panel Setup Options The SIMM for IPDS opt ion sett ings m ay be chang ed from the prin ter operator panel or changed rem otely by sending a text job with special comm ands to the printer. This sectio n of the gui d e re vi ews how to change and save o p tion se ttings using the ope r ato r panel.
22 3.2 Cha nging IPDS Sett i ngs Using the Opera t or Panel 3.2.1 The IPDS Setup Menu Access the SIMM for IPDS options and settings from the IPDS Me nu . T o reach the menu: 1. From a Ready status, Pr ess M e nu> fro m the operator p anel main screen until the IPDS MENU appears in the second lin e of the display .
23 3. Pre ss Select to select the menu or menu item shown on the second line of the displa y. If the selection is a m enu, the m enu is opened and the first printer setting in the m enu is displayed. If the selection is a m enu item , the current setting for the m enu item is disp l a yed.
24 3.2.3 Selecting a Setting fr om a List of Values When you select som e menu items, the printer displays a list of values. Press the Menu> b utto n t o cycle t hrough a l l the ava ilab le ite ms. To choo se a ne w user defa ul t setting, pr ess Select .
25 3.2.4 Changing a Numerical Sett ing If y ou choose a m enu item that has a n umerical v alue, the item name appears in the firs t line of the operator panel display and the num erical value displays in th e second line of the operator panel display.
26 3.2.5 A ctivating Sav ed Option Changes You m ay need to pow er the prin ter OFF and ON to activate an option change. See th e section below, w hich corresponds to your "attachment" meth od. LAN Attachm ent Most change s to IPDS M ENU settings are active on the very next IPDS print job .

30 4.3 EMULA T ION Menu Opti ons In the follow ing an asterisk “ *” indicates the default factory value. 4.3.1 IPDS Emulation This optio n selects the printer emulation to be used.
31 4.3.2 Default Codepage This option defines the default code page with th e appro p riate character set to be used. Values are in alphabetical order. T he panel w ill display code page optio ns beginning with the letters A - E, then F – K, and L - Z.
32 4.3.4 Default FGID Selects the default FGID to be used by the printer IPDS emu lation when the host does not send an FGID at the start of a job. T his option is only av ailable on IP DS emulation code level 8141 or high er. The option has three s ubmen us contain ing the FGIDs used in each em ulation .
33 4.3.6 Page Counter This o ptio n selec ts the method used fo r upd ating I PDS p age co unter s. Normal Update* Jam an d stacked page cou nters are u pdated wh en pages are printed. Early Updat e All page cou nters are u pdated wh en they are processed but n ot printed.
34 4.3.7 Printable A rea This option defines the prin table area on th e page and h ow cli pping is perform ed. Top, bot t om, and si d e margins fo r your pr int j o bs ar e set t hr ough your p rint a p plic atio n. 4028 Whole Page* The printable area i s 50 pels (4m m) in side the ph ys ical page.
35 4.3.8 Resource Memory This o ptio n defi ne s the amount o f memory to be use d as I P DS Re so urce M emory. Increasing mem ory can sometim es im prove perform ance becau se more f onts or other resources are retained in mem ory redu cing transm ission and printing times.
36 4.3.9 Exception Control It is often practical to s uppress ex ception reporting on undefined ch aracters and on position error s (p rinting outside the v alid pr intable ar ea ( VP A)). This optio n overrides the Exception Handling Control in th e IPDS d a ta str eam.
37 4.3.10 Font Control This optio n de fines how strict the reporting w ill be if a selected font does not correspond to a va lid combination of code page and ch aracter set. Relaxed* The printer makes an intelligen t decision concerning w hether the selected com bination of code page an d character set is adequ ately support ed.
38 4.3.12 IPDS Resolution This optio n de fines the resolution used when printing IPDS j o bs. This is a separate setting from the printer's Print Resolution under the Quality M enu . This optio n sets the w orking print resolution for the IPDS j o bs.
39 4.3.13 Intervent ion Required This optio n defines if the em ulation should report Intervention Requir ed messages to the hos t. Types of interven tion requi red mess ages in clude a paper jam , paper out, cover open or offline message. These ty pes of messages m ean the printer is not ready to print.
40 4.3.14 IPDS Timeout This optio n either allows the host to directly control w hen an IPDS LA N session with a printer ends (disconnects) or allows the printer IPDS emulation to determin e wh en an IPDS LAN session times out.

IPDS resources from the las t active port 9600 s ession are tem porarily s tored in th e printer m em ory whe n IP DS Timeout values ( 15 seconds to 10 Minutes) are selected and the h ost timer/tim eout values are set to a large value or disabled.

47 4.5.3 IPDS Envelope Paper This optio n selects the envelope default formatting size f or the IP DS Envelop e media source (most often it is the IPDS Num ber 64 (40H)). T his option setting applies to Input T ra y Mappi ngs se t to " Manua l Env" or " Env Fee der " .
48 Note: Other Envelope is only avail able on IPDS code l evel 9241 or above. If printing occurs af ter the length of th e physical paper, the messag e 34 Short Paper is displayed in the operator panel.
49 4.5.4 IPDS Manual Paper This optio n selects the default formatting paper size for the IPDS Manual media source (most often it is th e IPDS Number 99 (6 3H)). T his option setting applies to the Input Tr ay Mapp ings set to "Ma nual P a per " .
50 4.5.5 IPDS Multipurpose ( MP) Paper This optio n selects the default f ormatting paper size or envelope d efault form atting size for the IPDS multipurpose (MP) media source. T his op tion setting applies to the Input Tray Mappings set to "MP Feeder" .
51 4.5.6 Preprinted Media Note: The Preprinted Media option is onl y av ailable on IPD S code level 9241 or above. This option specifies how du plex printing from each of the phy sically installed tray s in the printer is to be controlled.

54 4.6 MA P INPUT TRA YS Menu Options This optio n defines the mapping of the h ost's request for a physical f eeder or input tray in the printer. Any host input source can be m apped to any printer input source. The printer input source is mapped to an IPDS host number.
55 Example 2 If an IPDS num ber is m apped (use d) twi ce, the low est tray m apping num ber is activated (if av ailable). For example if Tray Mapping 6 an d 7 both m ap to IPDS 64 as shown below, the printer w ill select media from th e Env Feeder.

58 4.7 MA P OUT PUT BINS Menu Options This optio n de fines the mapping of the h ost's request for a physical output bin in th e printer. The pr inter b in is mapped to an IP DS host num ber. Pr inter o utput bins include the top of the printer (standard bin) and optio nal output bins that attach to the top of the printer.

61 4.8 MA RGINS Menu Options Use margin settings to adjust the position of the page imag e. Margin settings, w hich could be com pared to mov emen ts of the tractor f eeder and paper kn ob of a m atrix printer, aff ect all IPDS jobs and are not affected by IPDS comm ands in th e job.
62 Margins m ay be adjusted for all input tray s and f eeders usin g the All Input Trays menu . Additional adj ustm ents may be made to the All Input Trays margin settin gs for an indiv idual tray or f eeder using the tray or f eeder specific m argin m enu.
63 Margin and Tray Linking Interaction When trays are link ed, the margins set in the All Input Tray s menu an d the marg ins set for the tray specified in the IPDS data str eam will be used to adjust the page im age on the paper Example 1 – Margi n and Tray Linking Tray 1 is reques ted as the input s ource from the host.

71 5 IPDS Job Cancel The IPDS cancel function allows IPDS jobs to be canceled at th e printer. Selecting a specific job to cancel is dif ficult w hen s everal sm all jobs are queued to print f rom the host. The job being printed m ay not be the job w hich is canceled.

73 6 Remote Configuration of Printer IPDS Settings Most IPDS emulation settings stored in the printer (the default IPDS settings ) can be changed rem otely by sendin g a special IPDS text jo b to the printer.
74 6.3 Re mote Configur a tion Using an IPDS Text Job Most IPDS emulation default option settings stored in the printer can be chan ged on LAN, C oax, and Twin ax attached printers by sen ding a special IPDS text job to the printer. Only the IPDS em ulation default option settings can be chan ged using a tex t job.
75 6.3.1 A S/400 Recommended Procedure The IPDS sessio n must be closed after the text job has been sent to the printer to activate the new IPDS option setting s. The changes tak e effect durin g the nex t established IP DS sessio n. The follow ing steps are recomm ended to rem otely chang e the printer IPDS option settings.
76 6.3.2 Mainframe Recommended Procedure The IPDS sessio n must be closed after the text job has been sent to the printer to activate the new IPDS default settin gs.
