1 1. Introduction.
2 1.1 Product Introduction Thank yo u for purchas ing LevelOne FPS-9023/W PS-9123 pri nter server. T his printer server allo ws your print er to bec ome a shared dev ice on the netw ork.
3 1.2 Product Package This packa ge contains the following compone nts: FPS-9023 or WPS-9123 Antenna (For WPS -9123 only) Power Adapter CD Manual/Driver/Utility Quick Installation .
4 1.3 Network Printi ng Architecture This sect ion illustrate s how printer se rver functi ons and oper ates on the netw ork. Before you inst all and use printe r server, it is st rongly recomm ended .
5 Because printe r server suppor ts IPX/SPX, NetBE UI, TCP/IP and AppleTalk ne twork protoc ols, any netw orked compute r can directly print to the printer se rver from any of its inst alled protoc ol.
6 In the client installation procedure, after PTPP (Peer-to-Peer Printing Drive r) is installe d into Windows, the system will aut omatically (manual configurat ion is a lso allo wed) search all the pr inter ser vers on the netw ork, and then add t heir printing ports in to Windows ’ printing port (see below ).
7 UNIX (inclu de HP/UX, SCO Unix, SunOS, Solaris, Unixware DECUnix, IBM AIX and others ) and Linux use the sys tem-standard LPR to print throug h printer serv er. MAC OS MAC OS can use the system-standard AppleTalk networ k to print throug h printer serv er.
8 1.4 Network Printi ng Environment Common netw ork environment are class ified as following: Windows Peer- to-Peer Network The client’s PTPP d river will use TCP/IP pro tocol to print through printer server. Window s 2000 Network Network p rinting funct ion will become av ailable aft er PTPP driver is installed into Wind ows 2000.

10 1.5 Contents of the User Manual Chapt er 2 explains pr inter serve r’s hardw are installat ion and configurat ion. It is strongly reco mmended for you to read. The follow ing chapters introduce: Chapter 3. Win dows Peer-to -Peer Network Chapter 4.
11 1.6 Firmware & Printing Functi on The printer serv er provides a comple te network printi ng solution. The feature set is listed below : PTPP (Peer-to-Peer-P rinting) TCP/IP (LP R) .
12 2. Hardware Installation 1. Unpack th e printer server pac kage and verify t hat all the items listed in the sectio n 1.2 are provided. 2. Connect the p rinter server to t he printer you w ant to share on the network. 3. Connect the p rinter server to your netw ork by attached t he network cable to th e UTP port of the print er server.

16 3. Windows P eer-to-Peer Networ k.
17 3.1 System Architecture Printer serv er supports Windo ws Peer-to-Peer ne twork printing mode, which is s uitable for most medi um and small n etwork environm ents. Through quick and simple installation pro cedure, users can immed iately enjoy the conv enience of n etwork p rinting.
18 In addition, afte r PTPP is ins talled, the sys tem will automa tically search for all printer serve rs on the network, and add the printing port of the printer servers into Windows’ pr inting port (refer to Network Printing Architecture in sectio n 1.
19 3.2 Administrator Installation and Setup The Adminis trator Installatio n can be perfor med on Window s 98SE/ME/ 2000/XP/ w ith the same use r interface. B efore the ins tallation, please verify that y our network prot ocol is install ed on your PC (TCP/IP, IPX and/or NetBEU I).

21 3. The “Printe r server Utilities” w indow will be dis played. Click “Next”..
22 4. Click “Next” t o install the utilities in the default fold er or click “Change” to s pecify the desti nation folder where you w ould like to install the utilities.
23 5. Select the comp onents you w ant to install. It is highly recomm ended to install all p rovided compone nts. Click “Nex t” to continue. 6. The system w ill start to install the util ities automatically .
24 7. You have co mpleted the i nstallation phase a nd prepare to co nfigure the Printer serv er. The “Choos e Printer server” w ill list all Printer se rvers within the netw ork. Select the Printer s erver you would lik e to configure and click “Next”.
25 8. Specif y a recognizable name for the Printer s erver and clic k “Next”. 9.Specify th e IP Addres s for the Prin ter server ma nually or click “Next” to kee p default IP Ad dress, i.
26 10. The configu ration summary is dis played in the window . Now, you have completed the Printer ser ver setup. Click “ Finish” and your system will add netw ork port of the Print er server to your PC aut omatically.
27 11. The Ad ministrator In stallation procedure is to tally comple ted. Click “Finish”. The Adminis trator Installatio n Program have ex ecuted the installation pro cedure that performs the following ta sks: Install all utilities and drivers to the administ rator’s PC.
28 3.3 Administ rator Utilities After A dministrat or Inst allatio n is complet ed, ther e will be fo ur utilities in printer server’s Program folder. Netw ork Ports Quick Setup – A dd the network ports of printer servers w ithin the network to yo ur PC.
29 3.4 Client In stallation and Setup The Client Install ation can be per formed on Window s 98SE/ME/ 2000/XP/ w ith the same use r interface. B efore the installation procedure, please confirm that your PC h as connected to t he network and installed at le ast one network protocol .
30 3. The “Printer serv er Utilities” wi ndow will be displ ayed. Click “Next”. 4. Click “Next” to install the utilities in the default folder or click “Brows e” to specify the des tination folde r where you w ould like to insta ll the utilities.
31 5. The system w ill start to install the util ities automatically . 6. Now, th e installation procedure is completed, you are ready to set up the client’s computer. All network ports of the Printer servers detected on th e network will be ad ded to your PC a utomatically, click “Continue” .
32 7. The Client Install ation procedure is com pleted. Click “Finish”. After the in stallation, you have completed t he followin g tasks: Install all utilities and drivers t o the client’s P C. Add all the printer server’s network ports of the network t o the client’s PC.
33 3.5 Client Utilities After Client Installation is comple ted, there will be thre e tools in printer server’s Program folder. Network Ports Quick Setup Remote Ports Uninstall Network Driver The Uninstall Network Driver will assist you in removing all in stalled client softw are.
34 During the client’s installation procedu re, the system will automatical ly search for all printer s ervers on the net work, and add t hem into the printer ports of the cl ient’s com puter (see be low). If you have just inst alled another new printe r server in the n etwork, you must run t his program first.
35 search and co nfigure pri nter serve rs on other subne ts across ne twork segments. You must use Remote Por ts Utility described in the next section to manage remote (across networ k segments) prin ter servers. Select the network ports in the “Available Ports” list and click “>” to add ports.
36 Step3. The new remote print port is display ed as follows. In order to us e the remote printing func tion, you w ill have to procee d with normal Add Printer pro cedure and select your pr inter por t as the newly ad ded remote p rinter port.
37 3.6 Windows Add Printer Procedure After add ing a “ Network Por t” of th e printer server to your PC by Administrato r or Client Ins tallation Progr am, you can follo w the procedure described below to add printer to the Win dows.
38 Step4. Select “L ocal printer attac hed to this compute r” and make sure that “Automatica lly detect and instal l my Plug a nd Play printer” is not selected.
39 Step6. Select a s uitable printer m anufacturer and the printer model a nd click “N ext”. If y our print er is not in the list, click “Have Disk… ” to install the driver of the pri nter. After installation, t he printer mod el will be add ed to the list.
40 Step8. Choose to pr int the test p age or not. It is recommended to print a test page. Click “Nex t”. Step9. You have ad ded the printer to th e PC successfully. The information of the p rinter is displayed in the w indows. Click “Finis h”.
41 4. Windows 2000 Network.
42 4.1 System Architecture In Windows ne twork environment, o ther than the Peer-to-Peer network pri nting archit ecture describe d in the previous cha pter, we also offer the Serv er-Based P rinting .
43 4.2 Windows 2000 Installation and Setup Please fo llow the proce dures descr ibed belo w for insta llation and construct a pee r-to-peer conn ection (PTPP) betw een Window s 2000 and Printer server. Step1. If this is your first time installing printer server, pl ease install the administrator software on Windows 2000 first.
44 4.3 User Installation and Setup After server side’s installation is completed, client side will be able to find the serv er’s shared printe r in Network Neighb orhood.
45 5. NetWare Network.
46 5.1 System Architecture We implemen ted NetWare prin ter sharing functiona lity into the printer server itself, thus al lowing one or m ore printers attached by a printer server to be conn ected to the network . We have developed t he printer server to supp ort NetWare printer s erver.
47 Each print er server sho uld log into a NetWare s erver before servicing t he print jobs. Each printer s erver will occupy a user account with which it can log into th e NetWare server.
48 5.2 NetWare 3.x/ 4.x/ 5.x Installation & Set up Once your print er server is connect ed to your Ethernet netw ork, you can set it up for use with your networking s oftware. 5.2.1 Installa tion Using PCO NSOLE 5.2.1.1 Configuring as Printer server Mode 1.
49 8. Press the Insert k ey to add a new NetWare printer serv er object. The print er server name can b e identical to the PSxxxxxx name printed on the la bel of the prin ter server. 9. Pre ss Enter to sel ect the newly created pr inter ser ver. 10. Select Printer serve r Configuration.
50 14. Sele ct Queues Ser viced by Prin ter, then sel ect Printer 0 (or Printer 1, Printer 2) an d press Enter. 15. Press Insert and add your newly cre ated print que ue to the li st of queue s serviced by th e printer. Enter a priori ty number for the queue service, or press Ent er to accept the default.
51 6. UNIX Sy stem Network.
52 6.1 Introduction The printer serv er is available for TC P/IP printing by U nix LPD (Line Printer D aemon) pro tocol. The LPD pr otocol origin ated with Uni x release is based o n the BSD version of Unix and support ed under most versions of Unix.
53 6.2 Enable Printer server’s TCP/IP Support The default config uration of the p rinter server is w ith TCP/IP support enabled. Anyw ay, you can configure t he printer server to enable TCP/IP support using th e configuration program.
54 6.3 Setup Printe r server’s IP Address The printer ser ver must ha ve a unique I P address in or der to be recogniz ed by the netw ork. You can set u p the IP addres s on the various Un ix systems using any one of the follow ing methods: 1. DHCP (Dynamic H ost Configuration P rotocol) 2.
55 2. Add an entry to the host ’ s /etc/bootptab file, similar to the follow ing: hostname: :ht= 1: :ha=print_server_ethernet _address: :ip=print_server_ip_address: Lines should be indented with t abs.
56 6.4 Verify Printer server ’s IP Address To verify that your prin ter server is respondin g to the newly assigned IP address using a PING comm and: ping ip-address.
57 6.5 Configure Remote LPD Printing on the Host The proced ure you use to config ure your Unix host (s) to allow printing to your netw ork remote print er server varies betw een different varieties of Unix. The proc edure below can be used for Un ix variants that are related t o BSD Unix, such as S unOS or Linux .

60 7.1 Introduction This chapt er introduces p rinter serv er’s system c onfiguration utility in Windows env ironment. This util ity is automatically installed during Window s Administ rato r Utility i nstallati on proce dure - r efer to sec tion 3.
61 Setup W izard : Guide You Through All the Settin gs. Report : List the Status of All Availa ble Printer serve rs on the Network. We will explain e ach function s eparately in the fol lowing secti on.
62 7.2 Search for All Available Printer server Every time when you run printer server’s config uration utility, click the “Search” ico n on the tool ba r. The configurati on utility will d elay for several se conds because t he utility is using system’s a vailable network protoc ols to search for all printer servers on the netw ork.
63 7.3 Status of Printer server Click “Status” icon on the tool bar, the stat us of the current selected print er server w ill be showed on th e right side of the w indow.
64 7.4 Setup the Printer server Click “Setup” icon on the tool bar, the s etup items of the c urrent selected print er server w ill be showed on th e right side of the w indow. Double cl ick one of the icons to set up the selec ted printer serv er.
65 7.5 Genera l Configuration Double Click “General” icon an d the Gene ral configurat ion w indow will pop-up. You can see basic p rinter server information in th is page. You also can config ure the “Printer serve r Name”, “SMB Group Nam e”, “User Name” and “Password” here.
66 7.6 TCP/ IP Confi guration Double Click “TCP /IP” icon and the TCP/IP configuration w indow will pop-up. You can config ure the prin ter server to automatically get IP from DHCP server or manually speci fy static IP. The pri nter server al so has a built-in DH CP server.

68 7.7 Netware Printer ser ver Configuration Double Click “NetWare ” icon and the NetWare config uration window will pop-up. This printer server suppor ts NetWare Bindery Printi ng method . The printer server per iodically polls the NetWare server printer queues for printing jobs.
69 7.8 AppleTalk Configuration Double Clic k “AppleT alk” icon and the Appl eTalk config uration window will pop-up. AppleTalk is a da ta communica tion protocol often used by Macintoshe s. The printer serve r can use these parameters to joi n the AppleTalk n etwork and shar e the printer to other AppleT alk workstatio ns.

71 7.9 Bonjour Configuration Bonjour tec hnology (“Re ndezvous” was rename d “Bonjour” with the release of Mac OS X v10.4), also kn own in the indust ry as Zero Configurat ion netw orking, enables aut omatic disc overy of com puters, devices, and s ervice s on IP netw orks.
72 7.10 SNMP Confi guration Double Click “S NMP” icon and the SNM P configuration w indow will pop up. Contact: You can enter the printer server admi nistrator’s c ontact information here. This informatio n w ill be displayed in the SNMP management to ol.
73 7.11 SMB Configuration SMB Group Name , the name of SMB gro up that this p rinter server belongs to . All PC sh ould join the same group before th ey can use th is printer server by SM B protocol.
74 7.12 System Configuration Double Click “System” icon a nd the System configuration w indow will pop-up. In the System configuration page, you can select to enable /disable each printing o r man.
75 Upgrade : You can use this “Upgrade” tool to update the new est firmware of the printer serv er. Click “ ” button and sel ect the correct firmware in your PC. After selecting the firmware file, click the “Upgrade” button to finish the f irmware update process.
76 7.13 Wireless Configurat ion (For WPS-9123 only) If you want to us e the printer s erver through w ireless LAN, please set up t he printer serv er through Ethern et first and make sure your wireless LA N setting is correct .
77 Infrastructure Mode: In the Infrastructure mode, y ou have to le t the print er server associat e with an access point. You let the printer server scan f or an availabl e access poin t automati cally or manuall y assign the SSID of the access point you w ant to use.
78 The list is t he scanned available access points. Select an access point in the lis t and click “Next”. If you c annot find the access point that you want t o use, click “Sc an” to let the printe r server scan again.
79 The list is the sc anned active w ireless stations . Select a wireles s station in t he list and cl ick “Next”. If you ca nnot find the w ireless station that you want t he printer serve r to communicate w ith, click “Scan” to let the printer server scan aga in.
80 WEP Security M ode: You can selec t “64 bit” or “1 28 bit” length and “H exadecimal” or “ASCII” format fo r the encryption key. L onger key length can pr ovide stronger security but w orth communication perf ormance. Enter four key values by fol lowing the rule s below and sele ct one key as the def ault key.

82 You can select to let the printer serv er automatically obtain I P settings with DHCP client or manually assign the IP settings. If you manuall y assign the IP settings , you have to enter IP addr ess, subnet mask and defaul t gateway address.
83 7.14 Wizard Click “Wizard” icon on the tool bar, the setup wizard item of the current selected printer server will be s howed on the right si de of the win dow. Double clic k the “Printer server S etup Wizard” the setup w izard will guide you t hrough all the setup process.

89 8.1 Introduction Printer server can be configu red and managed on the Web. Through Local Area Network, or even Int ernet, administ rator can easily c onfigure and manage p rinter server’s vari ous main functions in browsers.
90 8.2 Login You may use a ny Web Brow ser to review the status or c onfigure the setting s of the prin ter server . After en tering the IP address of the printer server, a lo gin page display. You have to ent er correct “Use r Name” and “Passw ord” before goi ng to the Web M anagement pa ges.
91 8.3 Device Status 8.3.1 System System Inf ormation includes “D evice Name”, “Pri nter serve r Name”, “Model Type”, “System Up Tim e”, “Firmware Version”, “MA C Address”, “Wireless LAN configurati on” and the pro tocols enabled sta tus, etc.
92 8.3.2 Printer The Printer serve r can communicate w ith the printer to get th e printer in formation in cluding prin ter manufacturer , model number , printing languag e supported, and al so the printer ’s statu s. This page lists the information of printers connected to all printer ports.
93 8.3.3 TCP/IP This page l ists all TCP/IP setti ngs of the printe r server includi ng “IP Address”, “Subn et Mask” and “Gateway”. It als o lists DHCP server setting.

99 8.4 Setup Wizard 8.4.1 System You can ch ange the pri nter server n ame and port nam e of the pri nter server from here . Printer serv er Name , the name of the p rinter server. Y ou can use this name to identify the printer server when you are sea rching for the printer server by th e administration an d client utilities.
100 8.4.1.1 Admin P assword It allows you to chan ge the passw ord of the print er server. Name is the administrator name of the print er server. If you ch ange the user name, y ou have to login to the printer server from admi nistrator utility or web management w ith the new name.
101 8.4.1.2 Adv anced Settings You can enab le/disable the p rinting protocol s and management to ols from the scree n. To enable the function, pl ease select “E nable”; to disable the fun ction, please select “Disabl e”.
102 8.4.2 Wireless Setting (For WPS-9123 on ly) If you want to use t he printer server throu gh wireless LAN , please set up the printe r server through Ethe rnet first and make s ure your wireless LAN settin g is correct.

105 8.4.2.2 Encryp tion (For WPS -9123 only) This printe r server supports WE P and WPA-PSK s ecurity mode. If you want t o use WEP encryption to prot ect your wirel ess network , you have to select “WEP”. If you w ant to use WPA-PSK, you have to select “WPA-shared ke y”.
106 y Key 1 – Key 4 – The WEP keys are used to encrypt data transmitted within the wireless network. Fill the text box by follow ing the rules below. 64-bit WEP: input 10-digit Hex values (in the "A-F", "a-f" and "0-9" range) or 5 - digit ASCII charac ter as the encr yption keys.
107 y AES – AES has been developed to ensure the highest degree of security and authenticity for digital information and it is the mo st advanced solution defined by IEEE 802.11i for the security in the wireless network. y Pre-shared Key Format – Select “Passphr ase” or “Hex” key format.
108 8.4.3 TCP/IP You can config ure the prin ter server to automatically get IP from DHCP server or manually speci fy static IP. The pri nter server al so has a built-in DH CP server.
109 8.4.4 SMB You can enab le/disable the SMB protocol from here. If SMB is enabled, ente r the “SMB Group Name” to specify the SMB group that t his printer server belong s to. All PC should join the s ame group before th ey can use this p rinter serve r by SMB protoc ol.
110 8.4.5 SNMP The printer ser ver suppor ts SNMP configuratio n. If it is enab led, please set up t he followi ng parameters. SNMP System Cont act: You can enter the print er server administ rator’s contac t information here. Th is information w ill be displayed in t he SNMP managemen t too l.
111 8.4.6 NetWar e This printer server suppor ts NetWare Bindery Printi ng method . The printer serve r periodicall y polls the Ne tWare server prin ter queues for printing jobs. You have to assign the NetWare ser ver name, pri nter server polli ng interva l and the name of queue on the NetWar e server for each printe r port.
