Chapter 1 Overview of Disk On-line Server 1.1 Introduction Thank you for choosing Disk On -line Server (NAS). Th is product has the followin g key features: • Desktop/ R ack -mount dual form factor design • VIA Eden 400MHz/ 128MB DRAM • 2 x 3.

Chapter 2 Installation of Disk On-line Server 2.1 Network Configuration By factory default , Disk On-line Server will sear ch the network via DHCP (Dynamic Host Configu ration Protocol) to de tect IP address setti ngs automatically .
Chapter 3 Administration of Disk On-line Server When you have installed Disk On -line Server and conn ected it to th e network, you can manage the server via web bro wser . Disk On-line Server supports Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0 or later , and Net scape Na vigator 4.
3. Click Administration on the main page. 4. Enter the user name and passwor d. The default admini strator name and pass word are: User name: administrator Password : admin The first time you login Disk On- line Server , Quick Configuration page will be shown.
3.2 Server Administration There are eight main section s in server administration, which are listed below: Quick Configuration Network Share Management System Tools Statisti cs & Logs Disk Configu.
3.3 Quick Configuration Y ou can configure Disk On-lin e Server step by step in Quick C onfiguration section. 1. Enter the server name. 12.
2. Change the administr ator password or se lect to use the original password. 3. Enter the date, time an d select the time zone f or the server . 4. Select the language the serv er uses for file names.
5. Enter the IP address, subnet mas k and default gateway for the server . 6. Select the network file servic es to provide on the server . 14.
7. Configur e disk volume on this server . 8. Configure the method of user authentication. 15.
9. Manage users and user groups of this server . 16.
10. Manage network shares on this ser ver . 11. Finish. It may take several to tens of minutes to complete Quick Con figuration, depending on your system settings.
3.4 System Settings Basic system settings includ e the se rver name, date, time, language setti ngs, and view system settings. • Server Name Enter the name of Disk On-line Serv er . The server name can be 14 characters long at maximum, which can contain alphabets, numbers and hyphens (-).
• Date & Time Set the date, time, and time zone accord ing to your location. If the settings are incorrect, th e following problem s may occur: 9 When using a web browser to ac cess or save a file, the displa y time of the action will be i ncorrect.
• Language Setting Disk On-line Server will u se the langua ge specified in this section t o create and display files and directories. Sele ct the correct language to a void the following problems: i. Unable to create files or directories in special ch aracters.
3.5 Network Settings 1. TCP/IP Configuration • Obtain IP address settings automatically via DHCP If your network supports D HCP , Disk On-line Server will au tomatically use DHCP protocol to retrie ve the IP address and related inf ormation.
Primary DNS Server: Enter the IP address of primary DNS server that provides DNS service for NAS in external n etwork. Secondary DNS Server: Enter the IP address of seco ndary DNS server that provides DNS service f or NAS in external netw ork.
2. Microsoft Networking Enable file service for Microsoft networking: F or users using Microsoft Windows, enable this service to access the files on networ k share folders. Assign a workgroup na me. The name ca n be 15 characters long at maximum but must not i nclude the followi ng: " + = [ ] , ; / : | * ? < > .
¾ W orkgroup: When configuring Disk On -line Server as standalone server , specify the workgroup the server belongs to . The workgroup is a computer group unit in Microsoft Wi ndows network for network sharing. ¾ Domain Name: Microsoft domain na me.
3. Apple Network T o use Disk On-line Server on Apple MAC oper ating system, enable Apple T alk network support. If your Apple T alk network uses extended networks, an d is assigned with multiple zones, assign a zone name to Disk On-line Server . If you do not want to assign a network z one, enter an as teri sk (*) to use the default setting.
5. NetWare Service T o use Novell Netware service, enable th is option and enter the server name for Netware network. The server will then operate in a manner similar to a Novell NetW are 3.12 file server . T o configure more options for Netw are service, enable Netware service and click Advanced .
6. Web Service T o access files on Disk On-line Server via web browser , enable W eb File Manager . If Disk On-line server is co nnected to the Internet and uses a vali d IP address, you can access files on the serv er by web browser from an ywhere. 7.

3.6 Disk Configuration Y our Disk On-line Server can accommodate two disks at maximum. Y ou can set the disk volume to the follow ing configurations: 1. Single Disk Volume You can select to use a st andalone disk. In case of disk crash, all data will be lost.
By factory default, Disk On-line Server is preset to one large RAID 0 disk (applicable for servers with two or more disk volumes). To use other disk configurations, the settings can be changed during the first Quick Configuratio n access. You can also admi nister your disk volume i n the following ways: i.

3.7 User Management The files on Disk On -line Server can be sh ared among multiple users. For easier management and better control of users’ ac cess right, yo u have to organize users, user groups and their access right control.
9 User name The user name must not exceed 32 char acters. It is case-insensitive and can contain double-byte characters, suc h as Chinese, Japanese, and Korean except: " / [ ] : ; | = , + * ? < > ` ' 9 Password The password must be 6~16 characters long.
• User Groups User group is a collection of users wi th the same access right to files or folders. Disk On-line se rver has created the following user groups by de fault: 9 Admin istra tors All members of administrators group have the right to perf orm system management.
• Quota T o allocate disk volu me efficiently , yo u can specify the quota that can be used by each user . When quota is set, u sers are not allowed to further use disk space once they have reached their quota limit . By default, no limita tions are set for users.
3.8 Network Share Management The primary purpose of network storage is file sharing. In a standard operation environment, you can c reate different ne twork share folders for various types of files, or provide different file access rights to u sers or user groups.
• Create T o create a network share, en ter the following information: 9 Network share name The share name must not exceed 12 characters and canno t contain the following characters: " . + = / : | * ? < > ; [ ] % 9 Disk volume This area shows the disk volume statu s.
• Access Control Once the network share is created, you can assign access ri ghts to users or user groups: 9 Deny access Access to the network share will be denied when this option is select ed. 9 Rea d o n l y Users can read the files only on the network share wh en read only is assigned.
• Property and Delete To edit the property of an existing network share, select a share and click Property . You can the n edit th e content of that share. You can also select to delete an ex isting network share. Click OK to confirm the deletion or Cancel to abort.
3.9 System Tools System T ools enable you to optimiz e the maintenance and management o f Disk On-line Server . 3.9.1 SNMP Settings Enable SNMP (Simple Netw ork Management Protocol) service an d complete all necessary settings to manage network components of the server by SNMP.
3.9.2 Alert Notification Enter the e-mail address of admi nistrator an d SMTP server IP address. In case of warning or malfunct ion, an email will be sent to the administr ator automatically . 3.9.3 Restart/ Shutdown Select to restart or shut down Disk On-line Server.
3.9.4 Hardware Settings Y ou can enable or disab le the hardware functions of Disk On-line Server . i. Enable LCD panel setting f unction To enable users to configure TC P/IP setti ngs via the LCD p anel.
3.9.5 UPS If your UPS device provides USB i n terface, you can enable UPS (uninterruptible power supply) support to protect your sy stem from abnormal system shutdown caused by pow er outage. In cas e of ut ility power failu re, the system wil l shut down automatically by probing the power s tatus of the connected UPS uni t.
3.9.6 Syste m Upd ate T o update the f irmware version of Disk On-line Server , make sure you have obtained the correct version of image f ile. It is suggested to back up all existing data on Disk On-lin e Server before updating the image. The current settin gs will remain unchanged after the s y stem is upgr aded.
3.9.7 Change Logo You can choose a personal pi cture to display on the login page of D isk On-line Server. The size of the pict ure cannot exceed 20K bytes.
3.9.8 Remote Replication Remote R eplication en ables you to replicate local files to remot e folders on another server . The files will be compressed before th e replication process in order to save time for data trans fer . Using Remote Replication Login Disk On-line Server , go to Remote R eplication in System T ools.
i. New a. Click New to enter th e following page. b. Complete all settings and click OK to save or Cancel to quit Note: T o use remote replication, en able Microsoft Networking serv ice, make sure the destination network shar e and directory have been created, and the user name and password are valid to login t he destination folder .
ii. Edit a. Select the job to be edited. b. Click Edit . c. Modify the se ttings. d. Click OK to save or Cancel to quit. 49.
iii. Delete a. Select the job to be deleted. b. Click Delete . 50.
3.9.9 Virus Scan Virus scanning agent helps protect your syst em from being infected by vi ruses. You need to operate Windows NT or Windows 2000 server wi th virus-scanning software installed to perform real-time virus scanning. To enable virus scan support, specify the IP address of netw ork share, the administrator ID and password.
Installing Virus Scan Agent Make sure virus scan agent and software are installed on the same computer which performs virus sc anning before activating the agent. Follow the steps below to install Virus Scan Agent: 1. Run Install Virus Scan Agent in Disk On-line Server companion CD.
3. Click Finish to complete. 4. A screen will pop up to show the system i nformation the first time you have successfully installed the virus scan agent.
The description of the fields is as below: Fields Description Server Name Name of the network sh are under the protection of virus scan agent IP Address The IP addre ss of the network shar e Status Co.
Enabling Virus Scan Support Go to Virus Scan of S ystem T ools. T o enable virus scan su pport, check the box Enable Virus Scan Support. Enter the I P address of the virus sca n server and click Apply . Viewing Details of Infected File s T o view the details of infected fi les of the network share, g o to Event Logs of Statistics & Logs.
3.9.10 Backup/ Restore/ Reset Settings To backup the setting(s), select the appropriate option(s) and click Backup . To restore a backup settings file, click Browse to select the file and click Restor e . To reset the setting(s) to factory defaul t(s), select the appropriate option and click Reset .
3.9.11 Backup Agent Backup agent enables Disk On-line Server to support particular backup programs. In addition to being compatible with more tap e drives and tape library, backup agent also supports backup and restoratio n among multiple servers on dif ferent OS.
Installation of Backup Agent Follow the steps below to install Backu p Agent: 1. Download Backup Agent program to local disk a. Install Back Agent. Contact technical supp ort for information of b ackup agent progr am. 2. Install Backup Agent a. Enter Disk On-line Server administrati on page.
3. Configure and enable B ackup Agent a. Click Enable Backup Agent . b. Enter the password for Backup Agent. c. Click Apply . The status will be sh own as Running.
3.10 Statistics & Logs Y ou can view the event logs of all current ly online us ers on Disk On-line Server for system monitoring. • Active Users This page shows all us ers that are currently logged on to the system.
Chapter 4 Accessing Disk On-line Server 4.1 Using Microsoft Windows 1. Y ou can access Disk On-line Server in Windows OS by the fo llowing wa ys: • By Quick Install Wizard . For furt her information, please refer to Appendix C. • Y ou may also search for Disk On -line Server within the Network Neighborhood.
2. Once the connection to Disk On-line Serv er is successful, all listin g on your available network share will be displayed. Select an appropriate network share folder and select Map Network Drive by right clicking on t he item.
4.2 Using Apple MAC OS If you are an Apple MA C user , you can acce ss Disk On-line Server by the following ways: 1. Using Network Br owser a. Choose “Network Browser” in Apple menu. b. In “Network Browser” , choose Apple T alk. A list of computers on the Apple T alk net work will appear .
c. Enter the logi n name and password, or use “Guest” to enter . Click Connect . d. When Disk On-line Server is connected, all network shares will be shown.
e. Choose a network share to connect. The network share will appear on the desktop. 65.
2. Using Chooser a. Select Chooser on Apple menu ba r . b. Click on AppleShare . The name of Disk On-lin e Server will appear o n the right side of the window .
c. Use the mouse to highl ight Disk On-line Server and click OK. d. Enter the correct login name and passw ord or use “Guest ” to login, and then click Connect .
e. All available network shares wil l be listed. Select a netw ork share and click OK. f. Close the Chooser progr am. Double c lick on the icon on the desktop to access the files.
4.3 Using Unix/ Linux OS In addition to Microsoft and MAC O S, Disk On-line Server also supports Unix - based systems such as IBM AIX, H P-UX, Sun Solaris, Linux, Free BSD , etc. through the NFS service: Note: Configure NFS se ttings in User Manage ment page for users who use t his feature before proceeding to the steps below .
4.6 Using File Transfer Protocol (FTP) In addition to working with multiple operating systems, Disk On- line Server also supports connection via FTP . Enter the correct user name and password to connect the server or access the public share folders as guest.
3. Enter user name and password. 4. The share folder will be shown. Y ou ca n then manage the folder by d ragging and dropping files to it, as well as rename or delete t he files.
Chapter 5 Disk On-line Server-Maintenance Disk On-line Server is specially designed to run 24 x 7 and be ready at all times against system cr ash caused by power outage. This section pro vides a general overview on system maintenance. 5.1 Restart/ Shut down Server Fo llow the steps below to restart or shut down Disk On-line Serv er .
5.3 Disk Failure or Ma lfunction When you encounter disk malfunction or failu re, please do the followin g: 1. Re cord the malfunction st atus or error messages. 2. Stop using the failed D isk On-line Server and turn off the server . 3. Contact customer servic e for technica l support.

Appendix B Web File Manager Using Web File Manager Launch the web browser and go to Disk On-line Server home page. Select Web File Manager and enter the correct login nam e and password. Y ou may also enter “guest” in the login name field with no password to access the network shares on Disk On-line Serv ers as an anon ymous guest.
Y ou can organize network share folders of Disk On -line Server . With W eb File Manager , you can upload, rename, or de lete files and folders in the network shares. • View files online Click on a file displayed on the web page. The informat ion of the file will be displayed.
• Upload file i. Open the folder to upload fil e to. ii. Click Browse to select the file. iii. C lick Upload . • Downloa d fi le i. Select a file t o download. ii. Right click the mouse and select “Save As” to save the file. • Logout T o exit W eb File Manager , click (Logout).
• Viewing Files Named in Chinese T o view files n amed in Chinese, you may have to configure the browser settings. T ake Internet Explorer as an example, follow the steps below to configure the settings. 1. Click on Tools in IE browser . 5. Re start the browser .

Appendix C Quick Install Wizard Quick Install Wizard enables you to search for all av ailable Disk On-line Servers within th e local network, and view the server name, IP address, and workgroup etc. Y ou can also configure the disk na me, date and time, etc.
Operation 1. Configure Disk On-line Server Select a Disk On-lin e Server displayed on Quick Install Wi zard and click Configure . Enter the admi nistrator password . Upon successful login, the following screen will appear . Enter the configuration values and click OK.
Fo r further configur ation of the system, please login the a dministration page of Disk On-line Server via w eb browser . Note: Y ou may have to restart Di sk On-line Server after changing the network configur ation. Set the name, date and time for Disk On-line Server .
2. View Disk On-line Server details Select a Disk On-lin e Server available on Quick Install Wizard and click Details . The follo wing screen will be shown: 85.
3. Map drive a. Select a Disk On-line Server an d click Map Drive . b. Select the correct network share and click Map Netwo rk Driv e . Then select the drive letter for connection.
c. Enter the password for the network drive. 87.

Appendix D NetBak Replicator NetBak Replicator is a progr am installed in user ’s system (Windows only) for data backup. Y ou can upload any files or folders to server and back up the data. Main Functions 1. Backup • File Filter Y ou can select particular file types to be excluded from backup .
Installing Netbak Replicator 1. Run Install NetBak Replicator in the companion CD. 92.
2. Follow the steps to install NetBak R eplicator . Then click Finish . 3. Upon successful installation, a shortcut icon will be shown on the Desktop. 93.
Using NetBak Replic ator 1. Create a share folder for backup in NA S. 2. Run NetBak Replicator . Click . All NAS and their sh are folders within the network will be displayed.
3. Select the server and share folder , or enter the IP address of NAS for data backup. Then click OK. Note: Only authorized users ca n access the shar e folders. Double click the folder. The system will prompt f or user name and password to authenticate the access privilege of the users.
4. Y ou can start the backup procedure up on succe ssful connection to the NAS. • Backup Select files and folders for backup. 9 File Filter Click File Filter to select file format to be skipped from backup .
9 Schedule Click Schedule on NetBak R eplicator main page. Then che ck the box “Enable Backup Schedul e” and sele ct the frequ ency and time for backup.
9 Monitor Select the files and folders f or monitoring. Then click Monitor . 9 Initialize Co nfiguration When using this funct ion, NetBak Replicator will record all current settings of the user , including whether or not monitor function is enabled.
• Restore a. Restore to original position: Select th e location that th e data will be restored to. b. Select new restore position: Click to select the directory to restore data to or select a previously chos en location from the drop-down menu. c. Start: Select the folder(s) and s ub-folder(s) for restoring data.
d. Option: Select recovery option and error option. 100.
• Log a. Clear All: Click t his button to clear all logs. b. Option: Select the type of logs to be recorded ― “R ecord all logs” or “Record error logs only” .
Appendix E Configuring AD Authentication Environment AD environment mixed mode can be support ed by NA S firmware version 4.1.3. For example, qatest.co m.tw and sub2.qat est.com.tw are domains controlled by Windows 2003 server , and sub1.qatest.com. tw domain is controlled by Wind ows 2000 server .
Adding NAS to Wi ndows Server 20 03 Active Directory D omain 1. Go to TCP/IP Configur ation in Networ k Settings. Enter the IP address of primary DNS server .
2. Go to Microsoft Networking of Network Sett ings. Enable AD Domain Member , and enter the domain name and the us er name with administr ator access right to that domain. Note: (1) Make sure that a fully qualified domain n ame such as qatest.com.tw has been filled in.
3. When the following message appears afte r applying the settings in step 2, check the DNS IP . When the following message appears afte r applying the settings in step 2, domain name, domain user name, and the password. When the following message appears afte r applying the settings in step 2, check the time zone settings.
4. Upon successful adding of domain member , you can view the list for domain users and local users in User Management. 5. Go to Access Control in Network Shar e Management to configure the access control right of AD users for all av ailable network shares.
Using AD users to access servic es T o access services like FTP , Network Neig hborhood, Apple T alk with an AD user account, add DomainName before the user name when logging in.
Adding NAS to Wi ndows Server 20 00 NT Domain 1. Go to Microsoft Networking to e nable NT Domain member and then enter the domain name such as sub1 and the us er who has administra tor access right for identification.
2. When the following message appears afte r applying the settings in step 1, check the domain name, domain user name, and the password. When the following message appears afte r applying the settings in step 2, check the time zone settings. Mak e sure the difference of your time and that of AD server is l ess than 5 minutes.
4. Go to Access Control in Network Shar e Management to configure the access control right of domain u sers for all available network shares. Using domain users to access s ervices T o access services like FT P , Network Neighborhood, Apple T alk with an domain user account, add DomainName before the user name when logging in.
