8 P RIORITIZING N ETWORK T RAF FIC Overview This chapter describes ho w 3Com Network Administ rator can be u sed t o prioritize network traffic on the 3Com devices on your network.
154 C HAPTER 8: P RIORITIZING N ETWORK T RAFFIC Key Concepts T raffic prioritization has three basic aims: ■ T o ensure that traf fic defined as being more important flows thr ough the network quicker t han other types of traffic. ■ T o ensure that important traffic is less likely to be dr opped if there is congestion on the network.
Key Concepts 155 Classification is configur ed on a device as a set of rules. Each rule defines a particular way of ident ifying the type of traffic. For example, a rule may state that SNMP traffic can be identifi ed as U DP packets that have either the source or the destination UDP port set to the value 161.
156 C HAPTER 8: P RIORITIZING N ETWORK T RAFFIC As these standards each define a single field in which to stor e the marking, it means that simple classi fication devices can still be used as part of .
Key Concepts 157 The boundary nodes (shown in the T opology example) are complex classification devices and can pe rform the appropriate marking of packets. This means that an y interior nodes that are simple classification devices are still able to determine th e correct traf fic pr ioritization to perform.
158 C HAPTER 8: P RIORITIZING N ETWORK T RAFFIC The example illustrates what happens when a device r eceives a set of packets of d iffer ent types tha t are destined for the sa me port: ■ The queuin.
Key Concepts 159 Drop ping The action of dropping allows the device to prevent blocked traffic from flowing on the network. This is achieved by discarding (dr op ping) packets that are identified via classification as traffic that should be blocke d.
160 C HAPTER 8: P RIORITIZING N ETWORK T RAFFIC Service levels enable easy identi fication of end-to-end tr eatment of traffic. If the example was to be c onfigured appr opr iately on the devices throughout the network, it would b e possible to say that database traffic is treated as business critical throughout the network.
Components 161 These devices would be configured wi th mappings between classificatio n rules and service levels as shown in Ta b l e 1 6 : T able 16 DiffServ Codepoints and Service Levels When these .
162 C HAPTER 8: P RIORITIZING N ETWORK T RAFFIC The wizard determines which of the devices it configures ar e capab le of the requir ed classificat ion and handles these devices as boundary nodes. These devices are configured by the wizard to classify th e traffic and to apply appropriate DiffServ codepoin t markings.
Components 163 ■ Network-wide Configuration — applies the selected configuration to all of the supported 3Com devi ces in the current inventory file. 3Com recommends that you use this configuration type whenever you intend to make changes to your selection or when you are first configuring traffic prioritization on your network.
164 C HAPTER 8: P RIORITIZING N ETWORK T RAFFIC 3Com Network Administrator config ures devices that are capable of classifying traffic based upon IP addres ses to identify traffic going to or from a server selected for prioritization.
Components 165 Figure 75 Prior itize Network T raffi c Wizard - Applications When a device is configured with th e classifier rules for a par ticular application only one of the rules need s to match a p acket in order for the packet to be iden tified as belonging to that application.
166 C HAPTER 8: P RIORITIZING N ETWORK T RAFFIC ■ Blocked Applications — selecting an application for blocking causes traffic identified as belonging to that ap plication to be dropped. Not all devices are capable of dr opping application traffic.
Components 167 Y ou can cancel the configur ation at an y time. If you do cancel, the wizar d will complete the configuration of th e devices it was in the pr ocess of configuring before aborting.
168 C HAPTER 8: P RIORITIZING N ETWORK T RAFFIC Network Prioritization Report The Prioritize Netwo rk T raffic W izard automatically generates a Network Prioritization report after it has co mpleted the configuration of your network for traffic prioritization.
Examples 169 Examples The following section details useful examples of traffic prioritization configuration. Applying an Existing Configuration to New Devices Y ou have just upgraded the core of your .
170 C HAPTER 8: P RIORITIZING N ETWORK T RAFFIC Prioritizing NBX V oice Tr a f f i c Y ou have recently installed an NBX phone system in your network and wish to ensure that the phone calls made using the system ar e of high quality , even when the network is congested.

180 C HAPTER 8: P RIORITIZING N ETWORK T RAFFIC Useful Information and References The following section provides useful information and refer e nces when using the Prioritizing Network T raffic feature of 3Com Network Administrator.
Useful Information and References 181 DiffServ Codepoint Field The DiffServ Codepoint field, define d in the IETF (Inte rnet Engineering T ask Force) RFC 2474, allows inform at ion about the quality of service re quirements of a packet to be carrie d with the packet as it traverses the network.
182 C HAPTER 8: P RIORITIZING N ETWORK T RAFFIC Determining Field Va l u e s f o r Applications In order to create a new application de finition, it is necessary to know the field values that can be used to iden tify that application.
Useful Information and References 183 ■ Classifiers created for applications or servers that have been selected for blocking are mapped to the Drop service level. ■ All other traf fic is left unclassifie d and is tr eated with the Default service level.
184 C HAPTER 8: P RIORITIZING N ETWORK T RAFFIC If a device is listed as not supporti ng ‘Classify Server s’ or ‘Classify Applications’ and you select a server or an application for prioritiza.
Key Considerations 18 5 T able 21 Resource W ar nings If any of the resource warnings are due to t he agent versions r unning on your devices then you can use T ools > Agent Update to find and update all devices whose agent software ver sion is out of date.
186 C HAPTER 8: P RIORITIZING N ETWORK T RAFFIC Why Errors Can Occur When Adding a Server When you are adding a server it is necessary to enter a unique non-blank name and either a v alid DNS name or a valid IP addr ess. If you choose to enter an IP address it must not be a broadcast IP address.
Key Considerations 18 7 ■ The IP address of the server that you wish to block does not belong to a server that is critical to your bu siness, such as a database or email server . Blocking IP addr esses such as these ma y have a major impact on your business.
188 C HAPTER 8: P RIORITIZING N ETWORK T RAFFIC Potential Hazards of Blocking Application Tr a f f i c Blocking traffic belonging to applications is a powerful feature for preventing the use of undesir ed applications on your network.
Key Considerations 18 9 CAUTION: Many TCP and UDP based applications use dynamic port assignment to determine the TCP or UDP port that will be used as the source port.
