The machine ′ s vibration damping system reduces the tr ansfer of vibration between the engine unit/cutting equipment and the machine ′ s handle unit.

English – 13 GENERAL SAFETY PRECA UTIONS • File all the teeth to the same length. When the length of the cutting teeth is reduced to 4 mm (0.16") the chain is worn out and should be replaced. General advice on adjusting depth gauge setting • When you sharpen the cutting tooth (A) the depth gauge setting (C) will decrease.
14 – English GENERAL SAFETY PRECA UTIONS 455e Rancher • Release the knob by f olding it out. • T urn the knob anti clockwise to loosen the bar cov er . • Adjust the tension on the chain by turning the wheel down (+) f or tighter tension and up (-) to loosen the tension.
English – 15 GENERAL SAFETY PRECA UTIONS Checking c hain lubrication • Check the chain lubrication each time you refuel. See instructions under the heading Lubr icating the bar tip sprock et. Aim the tip of the bar at a light coloured surf ace about 20 cm (8 inches) aw ay .
16 – English GENERAL SAFETY PRECA UTIONS Bar Check regularly: • Whether there are burrs on the edges of the bar . Remov e these with a file if necessar y . • Whether the groov e in the bar has become badly worn. Replace the bar if necessar y . • Whether the tip of the bar is une ven or badly worn.
English – 17 ASSEMBL Y Fitting the bar and c hain 455 Rancher , 460 Check that the chain br ake is in disengaged position b y moving the front hand guard to wards the front handle. Remov e the bar nuts and remov e the clutch cov er (chain brak e). T ake off the tr anspor tation r ing (A).
18 – English ASSEMBL Y T ension the chain by turning the wheel down (+). The chain should be tensioned until it does not sag from the underside of the bar . The chain is correctly tensioned when it does not sag from the underside of the bar , but can still be turned easily by hand.
English – 19 FUEL HANDLING Fuel Note! The machine is equipped with a two-stroke engine and must alwa ys be run using a mixture of gasoline and two- stroke oil. It is impor tant to accurately measure the amount of oil to be mix ed to ensure that the correct mixture is obtained.
20 – English FUEL HANDLING Fueling Clean the area around the fuel cap . Clean the fuel and chain oil tanks regularly . The fuel filter must be replaced at least once a year . Contamination in the tanks causes malfunction. Make sure the fuel is w ell mixed b y shaking the container bef ore refuelling.
English – 21 ST AR TING AND ST OPPING Starting and stopping Cold engine Starting: The chain brake should be activ ated when star ting the chain saw . Activ ate the chain brake b y pushing the front hand guard f orwards. Ignition; choke (A): Set the chok e control in the choke position.
22 – English ST AR TING AND ST OPPING CA UTION! Do not pull the star ter cord all the wa y out and do not let go of the star ter handle when the cord is fully extended. This can damage the machine. Note! Pull the front hand guard tow ards the front handle.
English – 23 W ORKING TECHNIQUES Bef ore use: 1 Check that the chain br ake works correctly and is not damaged. 2 Check that the rear right hand guard is not damaged. 3 Check that the throttle loc kout works correctly and is not damaged. 4 Check that the stop s witch works correctly and is not damaged.
24 – English W ORKING TECHNIQUES 5 T ake g reat care when cutting a tree that is under tension. A tree that is under tension ma y spr ing back to its normal position bef ore or after being cut. If you position y ourself incorrectly or make the cut in the wrong place the tree ma y hit you or the machine and cause y ou to lose control.
English – 25 W ORKING TECHNIQUES 7 T ake g reat care when you cut with the top edge of the bar , i.e. when cutting from the underside of the object. This is known as cutting with a pushing chain. The chain tries to push the chain saw bac k towards the user .
26 – English W ORKING TECHNIQUES Limbing When limbing thic k branches you should use the same approach as f or cutting. Cut difficult branches piece b y piece. Cutting If you ha ve a pile of logs , each log you attempt to cut should be remov ed from the pile, placed on a sa w horse or r unners and cut individually .
English – 27 W ORKING TECHNIQUES T ree felling technique Safe distance The saf e distance between a tree that is to be f elled and any one else working nearby is at least 2 1/2 tree lengths. Make sure that no-one else is in this ”risk zone” bef ore or during felling.
28 – English W ORKING TECHNIQUES Felling F elling is done using three cuts. First you make the directional cuts, which consist of the top cut and the bottom cut, then y ou finish with the f elling cut. By placing these cuts correctly you can control the f elling direction very accurately .
English – 29 W ORKING TECHNIQUES W e recommend that you use a bar that is longer than the diameter of the tree, so that y ou can make the f elling cut and directional cuts with single cutting strokes . See instructions under the heading T echnical data section to find out which lengths of bar are recommended f or your saw .
30 – English W ORKING TECHNIQUES How to a v oid kic kback What is kic kback? The word kic kback is used to describe the sudden reaction that causes the chain saw and bar to jump off an object when the upper quadrant of the tip of the bar , kno wn as the kickback zone , touches an object.
English – 31 MAINTENANCE General The user must only carry out the maintenance and ser vice work described in this manual. More e xtensive work must be carried out by an authorised ser vice workshop.
32 – English MAINTENANCE High speed jet H At the factory the engine is adjusted at sea level. When working at a high altitude or in diff erent weather conditions, temperatures and atmospheric humidity , it may be necessary to make minor adjustments to the high speed jet.
English – 33 MAINTENANCE Checking the brake trig ger Place the chain sa w on fir m ground and star t it. Mak e sure the chain does not touch the ground or any other object. See the instructions under the heading Star t and stop. Grasp the chain sa w fir mly , wrapping y our fingers and thumbs around the handles.
34 – English MAINTENANCE Stop switc h Star t the engine and make sure the engine stops when y ou mov e the stop switch to the stop setting. Muffler Ne ver use a machine that has a f aulty muffler . Regularly check that the muffler is securely attached to the machine.
English – 35 MAINTENANCE • Undo the screw in the centre of the pulle y and remov e the pulley . Insert and fasten a new starter cord to the pulley . Wind appro x. 3 turns of the star ter cord onto the pulley . Connect the pulley to the recoil spring so that the end of the spring engages in the pulley .
36 – English MAINTENANCE Spark plug The spark plug condition is influenced by: • Incorrect carburetor adjustment. • An incorrect fuel mixture (too much or incorrect type of oil). • A dir ty air filter . These f actors cause deposits on the spar k plug electrodes, which ma y result in operating problems and starting difficulties.
English – 37 MAINTENANCE Cooling system T o keep the w or king temperature as low as possib le the machine is equipped with a cooling system. The cooling system consists of: 1 Air intake on the starter . 2 Air guide plate. 3 Fins on the flywheel. 4 Cooling fins on the cylinder .
