How GPS W orks Y our F ishing System uses GPS and sonar to determine your position, displa y it on a grid, and pro vide detailed underwater information. T he Global P ositioning System (GPS) is a satellite navigation system designed and maintained b y the U.
2 Connecting a Handheld GPS Receiver to the F ishing System Humminbird® has designed tw o different dir ect -connect cables to fit the most common GPS Receiver configur ations.
3 Handheld GPS Connection Kit T he Humminbird® Handheld GPS Connection Kit includes the f ollowing items: • Handheld GPS Cable (NMEA data connection and optional 12 VDC pow er connection) • Y -ca.
4 3. Y our NMEA Cable allo ws you to connect your Handheld GPS Receiv er to an external 12 VDC pow er supply . If you choose to run your Handheld GPS Receiv er from an external 12 VDC pow er supply , connect the black wire to ground (-) and the r ed wire to positive (+) 12 VDC po wer .
5 NO TE: If the terminal slot is already used by another accessory, you will need to replace it with the included Y-cable. After you’ve inserted the Y-cable’s COM-connector into the appropriate te.
6 5. P ower up the F ishing System Control Head (see your F ishing System Operations Manual for details). NO TE: The Fishing System accepts NMEA 0183 ver sion 2.20 input at 4800 baud and listens for the NMEA sentences RMC and GGA to determine current position, heading, speed, time and date.
7 Views T he follo wing views will be added to the view r otation when a Handheld GPS Receiver is connected to the F ishing System: Navigation vie ws: • Combo V iew • T rack V iew • Bird’s Ey e V iew . When the VIEW k ey is pressed, the displa y cycles through the a vailable views.
8 T rack V iew T rack V iew displa ys the current track (also kno wn as the position history or breadcrumb tr ail) showing wher e the boat has been, along with saved tr acks, waypoints, and the curr ent route (when navigating).
9 P anning: Use the 4-WA Y Cursor Contr ol key to mo ve the track ar ound on the display in the direction of the k ey being pressed. W hen you do this, a bull’s e ye cursor is dr awn at the center of the screen and is link ed to the boat by a gra y line, even if the boat is off the scr een.
10 latitude/longitude coordinates of the cur sor , are display ed at the bottom of the view . Pressing the EXIT ke y moves the cur sor back to the original position of the boat. Bird’s Ey e Vie w Bird’s Ey e V iew shows a 3D perspectiv e view of the track fr om a point abov e and behind the boat (the ey e point).
11 V iew Orientation When y our Fishing System contr ol head is in T rack or Combo V iew , you can choose the orientation of the view b y selecting North-Up or Course-Up on the Navigation Main Menu. When North-Up orientation is selected, T rue North is sho wn at the top of the display .
12 Introduction to Na vigation Use your F ishing System to establish waypoints at ar eas of interest and na vigate to those wa ypoints via a route (repr esenting the shortest intended distance between wa ypoints). Y ou can also view and sa ve tracks, which r epresent the actual path of the boat.
Sav e, Edit, or Delete a W aypoint Sav e your curr ent position as a wa ypoint: On any vie w , press the MENU ke y to display the X - Press TM Menu. Select Mark and press the RIGHT Cur sor key to sa ve the current position of the boat as a wa ypoint.
T o make it easier to vie w a waypoint to edit, select Sort By and press the LEFT or RIGHT Cursor ke ys to select a sort order: • Name shows the w aypoints alphabetically • T ime shows the most recently-cr eated waypoint fir st • Distance shows the closest w aypoint first.
Add a W aypoint T arget or T rolling Grid Add or Remove a W aypoint T arget: From the W aypoints submenu, select T arget and pr ess the RIGHT Cursor k ey to display a list of wa ypoints.
Sav e or Clear a Current T rack Sav e the current tr ack: Fr om the Navigation X -Press TM Menu, select Sav e Current T rack and press the RIGHT Cur sor key . T he track will remain on the displa y , but will change from black to gra y . T o remov e the track completely from the displa y , see Edit, Delete or Hide Saved T r acks.
17 T he Menu System T he menu system is divided into easy-to-use menu modules. T he main components of the menu system are as f ollows: Start-Up Options Menu - Press the MENU key during the po wer up sequence to vie w the Start -Up Options menu.
User Mode (Normal or Advanced) - An Adv anced Mode is pro vided for users who desir e the highest level of contr ol ov er the Fishing System, and Normal Mode is pr ovided for user s who desire gr eater simplicity and few er menu choices.
19 Start -Up Options Menu Press the MENU k ey when the T itle screen is displayed to access the Start -Up Options menu. Use the UP or DOWN Cursor k eys to position the cursor , then the RIGHT Cursor k ey to select one of the follo wing choices.
20 Simulator Use the Simulator to learn how to use y our Fishing System befor e taking your boat on the water . T he Simulator is a very po werful tool that simulates on the water oper ation, providing a r andomly-updated displa y .
21 System Status Use System Status to view system connections and to conduct a unit self-test. Exit System Status by po wering your F ishing System off . T he follo wing screens are displa yed in turn when you pr ess the VIEW button when using System Status: • Self T est • Accessory T est • GPS Diagnostic V iew .
22 G PS Diagnostic V iew sho ws a sky chart and numerical data from the GPS r eceiver . T he sky chart shows the location of each visible GPS satellite with its satellite number and a signal str ength bar . A dark grey bar indicates that the satellite is being used to determine your curr ent position.
23 Sonar X -Press TM Menu (Sonar V iews Only) T he Sonar X -Press TM Menu provides access to the settings most frequently -used. Press the MENU ke y once while in any of the Sonar V iews to access the Sonar X -Press TM Menu. NO TE: Menu choices will vary depending on system settings such as whether the unit is set for Adv anced User mode.
Navigation X -Press TM Menu (Navigation V iews Only) T he Navigation X -Press TM Menu pro vides access to the settings most frequently used. Pr ess the MENU key once while in the Bird’s Ey e V iew , T rack V iew , or Combo V iew to access the Navigation X -Press TM Menu.
W aypoint [Name] (Only with an Active Cur sor on a W aypoint) W aypoint [Name] allows you to view the W aypoints submenu for the w aypoint under your cur sor .
Zoom Zoom allows y ou to change the scale of the Bird’s Eye, T r ack and Combo V iews. T o Zoom: 1. Highlight Zoom on the Navigation X -Press TM Menu. 2. Press the LEFT or RIGHT Cursor k eys to increase or decr ease the Zoom lev el. Go T o Go T o allows y ou to start Navigation to wards a w aypoint.
27 Clear Current T rack Clear Current T rack allows you to clear the current tr ack being display ed and start a new track at the pr esent position. T o Clear Current T rack: 1. Highlight Clear Current T rack on the Navigation X -Press TM Menu. 2. Press the RIGHT Cursor k ey to initiate clearing the current tr ack.
28 Re move T a rge t (Only if a T arget is Activ e) Remove T arget r emoves the w aypoint tar get from the display . T his menu choice will only appear when a target has alr eady been applied to a waypoint. See Na vigation Menu T ab: W aypoints for mor e information.
29 W aypoint [Name] (Most recently -created w aypoint) W aypoint [Name] allows you to vie w the waypoints submenu f or the most recently created wa ypoint. NO TE: You must have created a waypoint at least once since you last powered up the Fishing System for this menu choice to appear.
Navigation Menu T ab Press the MENU k ey twice to access the Main Menu System, then press the RIGHT Cur sor key to select the Na vigation tab. NO TE: Menu choices will vary depending on system settings.
Sav ed T r acks Sav ed T racks allo ws you to edit, delete, or change the default appear ance of your sav ed tracks. T o view the Sav ed T racks Submenu: 1. Highlight Sav ed T racks on the Navigation main menu. 2. Press the RIGHT Cur sor key to vie w the Saved T racks submenu.
W aypoints W aypoints allo ws you to view the W aypoints submenu to easily manage the wa ypoints on your Fishing System. T o view the W aypoints Submenu: 1. Highlight W aypoints on the Navigation main menu. 2. Press the RIGHT Cur sor key to vie w the W aypoints submenu.
Cursor T o allo ws you to mov e the cursor quickly to a wa ypoint from the list of sa ved wa ypoints. Select Cursor T o and pr ess the Right Cursor ke y to view the sav ed waypoints list. Use the UP and DOWN Cursor k eys to choose a wa ypoint from the list, and press the Right Cur sor ke y again to initiate the cursor to that w aypoint.
34 North Refer ence North Refer ence allows you to hav e bearings displayed with one of two orientations: T rue North or Magnetic North. T o change the North Reference setting: 1. Highlight North Reference on the Na vigation main menu. 2. Press the LEFT or RIGHT Cursor k eys to change the North Ref erence setting.
Track Min Distance (Advanced) T rack Min Distance allo ws you to set a minimum distance of tr avel bef ore a trackpoint is added to the track. T he T rack Min Distance menu choice is only available when User Mode is set to Advanced (see T he Menu System: User Mode ).
Course Pr ojection Line Course Pr ojection Line allows y ou to display or hide an arro w extending from the bo w of the boat that projects your curr ent course, and shows wher e the boat will go if you continue on y our present course. T o change the Course Projection Line setting: 1.
37 Alarms Menu T ab Fr om any view , press the MENU k ey twice to access the Main Menu System. T he Alarms tab will be the default selection. NO TE: When an alarm is triggered, you can silence it b y pressing any k ey . The alarm will be silenced, and will not be trigger ed again until a new instance of the alarm condition is detected.
Arrival Alarm Arrival Alarm sounds when the boat has either exceeded the distance to the destination wa ypoint, or has entered the Arrival Alarm Cir cle, based on the menu setting when navigating. Arriv al Alarm allows you to set ho w close the boat must be to the destination wa ypoint before the Arriv al Alarm will sound.
39 Setup Menu T ab Fr om any view , press the MENU k ey twice to access the tabbed Main Menu System, then press the RIGHT Cur sor key until the Setup tab is selected. NO TE: Menu choices will vary depending on system settings such as whether the unit is set for Adv anced User mode and what accessories are attached to the unit.
Units - Distance Units - Distance selects the units of measure for all distance- related r eadouts. T o change the Units - Distance setting: 1. Highlight Units - Distance on the Setup menu. 2. Press the LEFT or RIGHT Cursor ke ys to change the Units - Distance setting.
41 Local T ime Zone (Advanced) Local T ime Zone selects your time z one in refer ence to the time reported by the GPS r eceiver when T ime+Date is selected as a Digital Readout on the Sonar V iew (see Select Readouts in your F ishing System Operation Manual).
Time F ormat (Advanced, International Only) T ime Format changes the time format used by the unit. T his menu choice is available only when in Advanced User Mode (see T he Menu System: User Mode ) International Models Only .
43 NMEA Output (Advanced) NMEA Output turns the NMEA* output on or off . This menu choice is a vailable only when in Advanced User Mode (see T he Menu System: User Mode. ) NMEA Output should be turned On if you connect the NMEA Output wir es of the GPS Receiver cable to another NMEA-compatible device, such as an autopilot.
Accessories Menu T ab Fr om any view , press the MENU k ey twice to access the tabbed Main Menu System, then press the RIGHT Cursor k ey until the Accessories tab is selected. If no accessories are attached to the Accessory Bus, no accessory menu choices will appear under the Accessories tab.

Display Pr oblems T here ar e sever al main conditions or sources of possible interfer ence that may cause pr oblems with the quality of the information displa yed on the control head.
