2 How Sonar W orks Sonar technology is based on sound wav es. The 500 Series™ F ishfinder uses sonar to locate and define structur e, bottom contour and composition, as well as depth directly below the tr ansducer .
3 How Sonar W orks When all the e choes are view ed side by side, an easy to interpret “gr aph“ of the bottom, fish, and structure appear s. The sou nd pu ls es are t rans mi tte d at var iou s frequencies depending on the applica tion. V ery high frequencies (455 kHz) ar e used for grea test definition but the opera ting depth is limited.

5 How Sonar W orks Down Imaging™ Sonar (Down Imaging™ models only [587ci HD DI, 597ci HD DI]) Y our 587ci HD DI/597ci HD DI Fishfinder uses Down Imaging™ technology . The Do wn Imaging™ transducer scans the w ater with razor -thin, high-definition beams.

7 Dual Beam Ice T ransducer (w ith o pt ion al -p ur ch ase X I 9 20 I ce T ra ns du cer ) The XI 9 20 Ice T r ansducer pro vides selectable dual-frequency sonar with a wide area of cov erage. Selectable dual- frequency giv es you the option of two beams, and both beams will cover the bottom and provide high def inition.
8 How GPS W orks Y our 500 Series™ Fishfinder also supports GPS (Global P ositioning System) and chartplotting. It uses GPS and sonar to determine your position, displa y it on a grid, and provide detailed underw ater inf ormation. GPS uses a constellation of satel lites that continually send radio signals to the earth.
9 What’s on the 500 Series™ Contr ol Head Y our 500 Series™ Fishfinder interf ace is easy to use. A combination of ke ys and special featu res allows y ou to control wha t you see on the display . Refer to the followi ng illustration, and see K ey Functions f or more informa tion.
10 Ke y Functions Y our Fishfinder user interface consists of a set of easy-to-use k eys tha t work with various on-screen vie ws and menus to give y ou flexibility and control ov er your fishing experience. POWER/LIGHT Ke y The POWER/LIG HT key is used to po wer the F ishfinder on and off.

12 4-W A Y Cursor Contr ol Ke y (LEFT , RIGHT , UP , or DO WN Cursor keys) The 4-W AY Cur sor Control k ey has multiple functions, depending on the view , menu, or situation. • Menu Selection: Press the DOWN or UP Cursor ke ys to highlight a menu option, then press the RIGHT or LEFT Cur sor keys to change a menu setting.
13 MARK Ke y Press the MARK k ey while in any vie w to mark the position of a waypoint . The MARK k ey function w orks if you hav e the GPS receive r connected. • Active Cursor: T he wa ypoint will be marked a t the cursor location. • Without Activ e Cursor: T he wa ypoint will be marked a t the boat location.
14 • In the Circular Flasher View (Ice F ishing Mode: On), press the +Zoom key to di splay a 2x magnified view of the selected ar ea on the Flasher dial. See Vie ws: Circular Flasher View f or more inf ormation. • Down Imaging™ Vie w: Use the 4-W A Y Cursor Control k ey to mov e the active cursor to a position on the screen.
15 SD Memory Card Slot The SD memor y card slot on your contr ol head can be used with SD memory cards (optional- purchase re quired) to add detailed charts to your Fishfinder or export na vigation data fr om your Fishfinder (see Intr oduction to Navigation ).
16 Add Maps to Y our Fishfinder Y our Fishfinder includes a built -in UniMap™ with a more detailed map of Nor th America (Domestic models) or a detailed map of Europe and Southeast Asia, including Australia and Ne w Zealand (International models).
17 Export Navigation Data The Humminbir d® W aypoint Management dialog box allo ws you to export all of your naviga tion items to an installed, unlocked SD Car d.

Each time the unit pings, a strip of data repr esenting all the echoes received b y the transducer ar e put together on the display to form the image that y ou see.
29 What’s on the Down Imaging™ Display Down Imaging™ Sensitivity Use Imaging Sensitivity to control how the sonar returns appear on the display . Increase the sensitivity to re veal weak er returns tha t may be of inter est, especially in very clear wa ter or greater depths.

66 Add a W aypoint T ar get or T r olling Grid The W aypoint T arget sho ws a target consisting of concentric cir cles in various distance ranges centered on the w aypoint y ou choose. The T rolling Grid shows various distance ranges in grid f ormat fr om the waypoint y ou choose.
67 Routes Save the Current Route: While y ou are naviga ting, the current r oute can be saved. F rom the Na vigation X -Press™ Menu, select Sa ve Curr ent Route, and press the RIGHT Cursor k ey . Navigation will continue. Create a New Route: Open the W aypoint Management dialog box.

70 Edit your Wa ypoints, Routes, T racks, and Gr oups Whether you are crea ting a new naviga tion item or editing it, you can use the same steps to customize a waypoint, r oute, track, or group. T he a vailable settings will depend on the type of item you are editing.

72 The Menu System T he Menu System The Menu System is divided into easy -to-use menu modules. T he main components of the menu system are as follo ws: • Start-Up Options Menu: Press the MENU key during the po wer on sequence to view the Start -Up Options Menu.

Also, see Po wer On for additional informa tion. Normal Use Normal for on-the-w ater opera tion with a transducer connected.
74 Start-Up Options Menu Simulator Use Simulator to learn how to use y our Fishfinder befor e taking your boa t on the wate r . T he Simulator is a v ery pow erful tool that pro vides a randomly - updated displa y which simulates on the wa ter opera tion.
