How Sonar W orks Sonar technology is based on sound waves. The 300 Series TM Fishing Syst em uses sonar to locate and define structure, bot tom c ontour and composition, as well as depth directly below the transducer .
The sound pulses are transmit ted at various frequencies depending on the application. V er y high frequencies (455 kHz) are used for great est definition but the operating depth is limited. High frequencies (200 kHz) are commonly used on consumer sonar and pro vide a good balance between depth performance and resolution.
DualBeam PLUS TM Sonar Y our 300 Series TM Fishing System uses a 200/83 kHz DualBeam PLUS TM sonar system with a wide (60 °) area of coverage. DualBeam PLUS TM sonar has a narrowly focused 20 ° center beam, surrounded by a second beam of 60 °, expanding your co verage to an area equal to your depth.
GPS uses a constellation of 24 sat ellites that continually send radio signals to the earth. Y our present position is determined by receiving signals from up t o 16 satellites and measuring the distance from the satellites. All satellites broadcast a uniquely c oded signal once per second at exactly the same time.
What’ s On the Display The 300 Series TM can display a variety of useful information about the area under and Timer - elapsed time with T emp/Speed Accessory or GPS Receiver . Depth - water depth; can be set to alarm when the water becomes t oo shallow .
adjacent to your boat, including the following it ems: the display and the depth of the bott om directly below the cursor . In addition, the Latitude and the distance to travel to the cursor position and the bearing t o the cursor position. A waypoint can retrieval and use.
Views The views available on your 300 Series TM Fishing System ar e: Sonar views: Navig a tion views: • Sonar View • Bird’ s Eye View • Zoom View • Chart View • 200/83 kHz Split Sonar View • Combo View . • Big Digits View • Circular Flasher View .
Sonar View Sonar View presents a historical log of sonar r eturns. Depth is always displayed. Readouts for temperature and speed ar e automatically displayed if the appropriate accessory is connected.
Understanding Sonar History It is important to understand the significance of the 300 Series TM Fishing System display . The display does NO T show a literal 3- dimensional representation of what is under the water .
Freeze Fr ame Freeze Frame - Pressing any arr ow on the 4-W A Y Cursor Contr ol key will freeze the scr een and a cursor will be displayed on the screen. The cursor can be positioned on the display using the 4-W A Y Cursor Con trol key t o determine the depth of any sonar return.
Inverse is a method wher e weak returns are shown with dark pixels and strong r eturns with lighter pixels. This has the benefit of ensuring that weak signals will be clearly visible on the display . Structure ID® represents weak returns as light pixels and strong returns as dark pix els.
Sonar Zoom View Sonar Zoom View increases the displayed r esolution to separate sonar returns that are very close together , such as those caused by fish suspended close to the bot tom or within structure. In Zoom View , the display is split to show a narrow slice of the full range view on the right and the zoomed view on the lef t.
200/83 kHz Split Sonar View Split Sonar View displays sonar returns from the 83 kHz wide beam on the left side of the screen and displays sonar returns from the 200 kHz narr ow beam on the right side of the screen. Depth is always displayed in the upper left hand corner .
Big Digits View Big Digits View provides digital data in a lar ge, easy-to-see format. Depth is always displayed. Readouts for temperature, speed and T riplog information are displayed automatically if the appropriat e accessory is connected to the 300 Series TM Fishing System.
Bird’ s Eye View Bird's Eye View - This view shows a 3-D , perspective view of the track and the chart’ s land cont our from a point above and behind the boat (the eye point).
Chart View Chart View - This view shows car tography from the built -in Uni-Map TM for the area surrounding your current position. The curr ent track ( also known as the position history or breadcrumb trail) showing where the boat has been, along with saved trac ks, waypoints, and the curr ent route (when navigating), are o verlaid on the chart.
Combo View Combo View - This view is displayed as a split screen, with Chart View on the left and Sonar View on the right side of the screen. The width of the sonar window can be changed. View Orientation Both Chart and Combo views allow you to c hoose the orientation of the view .
Viewing Cartography In the Chart or Combo Views there are several cartography-relat ed functions that you can access using various keys. Panning: Use the 4 -W A Y Cursor keys to move the chart around on the display in the direction of the key being pressed.
W aypoints, R outes and T racks W aypoints are stored positions that allow you t o mark areas of interest or navigation points. Y our 300 Series TM Fishing System can st ore up to 2000 waypoints. Routes link two or more waypoints together t o create a path for navigation, and are used in trip planning.
Sav e, Edit, or Delete a W aypoint Save your current position as a w aypoint: On any view , press the MARK key to save the current position of the boat as a waypoint. Save the cursor position as a wa ypoint: On the Chart or Combo view , use the Cursor key to designate the position you want t o save as a waypoint.

Alarm, T emperature: T emperature Alarm is a user - contr ollable, audible alert that sounds when the water surface temperature equals the set ting.
Chart Speed: Char t Speed is a user - controllable f eature that sets the speed at which sonar information moves across the display . A faster setting displays sonar information from more pings and.
Fish Arch: A Fish Arch is the apparen t "arch" that appears on the display when any object moves through the sonar cone. The arc h results from a gradual decrease in distance to an object as it moves int o the sonar cone.
of enhancing the apparent sensitivity because the weak er signals appear bolder . Inverse grayscale works well in very clear water . Debris-laden water often appears as a lot of clut ter on the screen.
Pixels, V ertical: Vertical Pixels are a number of vertical picture elements in a single column on an L CD display . A greater number of vertical pixels provide finer resolution of targets detected by sonar .

Sonar View X -Press TM menus will diff er from Chart View X -Press TM menus, etc. X -Press TM menus are one of the principal reasons that Humminbird® products are easier to use.
Bearing (BRG): Bearing is the direction to a destination waypoint measured in degr ees from North (i.e. 321°, where 000 ° is Nor th, 090 ° East, 180 ° is South, 270 ° is West). Chartplotter: Chartplott er describes a navigation device that shows Present Position on a Map, along with T racks, W aypoints, and Routes.
Fix T ype: Fix T ype indicates whether the GPS receiver is providing 2D fix or 3D fix. A 2D fix requires only three satellit es and provides only latitude and longitude. A 3D fix requires four or more sat ellites, and pr ovides latitude, longitude and altitude.
North, Magnetic: Nor th is the principle reference point of the c ompass (i.e. North is 000 °). Magnetic Nor th relies on the earth’ s magnetic field to align a metal pointer generally towards T rue North.
Speed Over Ground (SOG): Speed Over Ground is the measuremen t of the boat’ s progress across a given distance, and is the speed measur ement provided by GPS . An alternate, Speed Through W ater , is pro vided by a speed paddlewheel, and is the measurement of the flow past the boat, which may v ary depending on current speed and direction.
