Icon Button name Description 1 Attention LED In combination with the Power LED, indicates scanner functions and error conditions. 2 LCD • Displays available scan shortcuts that users can select. • Shows menu options and status and error messages. 3 OK/Select Allows you to scroll through and select op tions in the LCD .
Transparent mater ials adapter (TMA) You can use the transparent material s adapter (TMA) to scan 35 mm slides or negatives. See also • “ Use the transp arent materials adapt er (TMA)” on page 1.
To change energy consumption setti ngs, follow t hese steps: 1. Press the Setup ( ) button, use and until the energy consump tion setting you want is selected , and then press OK . 2. Use and until the s etting you wa nt ( ON or OFF ) is selected, press OK , and then press twice.
• Scanning t he following t ypes of documents wit h the ADF might result i n paper jams or damage to the documen ts. To scan these do cuments, use the sc anner glass instead of the AD F.
• When loadi ng small pages, such as A5 paper size (148 x 210 mm or 5.8 x 8.3 in ), load a stack o f at least five pages to ensure that the ADF properly d etects and feeds the stack. When scanning f ewer than five small pa ges, scan the pages b y placing them on the scanner gl ass.
3. Align the edges of th e documents by tappin g the bottom of t he stack against th e table top. Rotate the stack 90 degrees a nd repeat. 4. Place the stack in the middle of the input tray. Load t he stack face up. 5. Adjust the paper gu ides to the width of the documents.
Use the scanner glass Place items that do not meet the specif ications for the automatic do cument feeder (ADF) directly onto the scanner glass. Minimum size: No minimum size Maximum size: 216 x 300 mm (8.
Use the tra nsparent mate rials adapte r (TMA) This section cont ains informat ion about usin g the transpa rent material s adapter (TMA) to scan slides, includin g 35 mm slides, a nd negatives.

Tips on using the Sca n button • Before you use the Scan ( ) button for the f irst time, you must select the shortcuts you want disp layed in the scan sho rtcuts men u. • To cancel a scan, press the Cancel ( ) button . • You can associat e the Scan ( ) and Copy ( ) buttons with any button-aware scanning software.
3. In the HP Scanning shortcuts dialog box: a . Select the scan shortcut you want to use. b . I f you want to change scan settings or show a preview bef ore you scan, click Change Settings. .. and make the change s you want. For m ore information , see the scanner software help.
Make copies Use the Copy ( ) button to scan an original and send i t to a printer. To make copies, follow t hese steps: 1. Load the o riginals. 2. Press the Copy ( ) button. The copy i s sent to the pri nter and the HP Copy dialog box displays on the connected comput er.
2 Useful scanning features Experienced documen t management p rofessionals might be interested in the followi ng scan features. Many of t hese features are also availab le from any ISIS- or TWAIN- compliant document scan ning software that a llows you to modif y the scan settings.
Automatically remove blank pages To set your scan preferences to automatically remove blank pag es from the automa tic document feeder (ADF) ou tput scan, follow th ese steps: 1. Double-click th e HP Scanning icon on the deskto p, select a docum ent scan shortcut , click Change Settings .
3. Finish the scan by clicking Finish in the HP Scanning preview wi ndow. 4. Wait for the scanning software to process the scanned document pages a ccording to the profile settings. You can se t up a scan s hortcut that skips St eps 2 and 3 of the standard proce ss.

NOTE: If cleaning the top surface of the glass does not remove al l dirt and smudges from the glass, you can also clea n the underside o f the glass. C leaning the underside of the glass requires t hat you disassemble the scann er. For instructions o n how to clean the underside of the sc anner glass, see www.
To clean the ADF, f ollow these steps: 1. Turn off the scanner and then disconnect the USB cabl e and power cable from the scanner. 2. Open the scanner lid.
3. Cl ean the whit e strip on the in side of the scanne r cover and the clea r scanning strip on the scanner bed. W ipe these item s with a clea n, damp, lint-free cloth.
5. Wipe the ADF rollers w ith a clean, damp, li nt-free cloth. 6. Wait several minut es for the rollers to dry, and t hen close the ADF roll er cover and access door.
The feed roller replace ment kit contains a feed roller, separation pad, and installat ion instructions. To orde r replacement kits, go to www.hp.com/s upport . To replace the fee d roller and separation pad, follow th ese steps: 1. Turn off the scanner, and then disconnect the USB cable and power cab le from the scanner.
4 Troubleshooting This section contai ns solutions for common problems with t he scanner, autom atic document feeder (ADF), and transparent m aterials adapter (TMA).

Check the cables Cable type Action Power cable The power cable is connected between the scanner and a power outlet. • Ensure that the power cable is securely connected between the scanner and a live electrical outlet or surge protector.
Scanner initialization or hardware problems If the scanner does not w ork after installa tion or if the scanner has stopped working correctly, you might see a message on the computer screen tha t is similar to one of the following: • The scanner could n ot be initialized.
port, or another USB d evice. Leave the scanner directly connected to the computer through a USB port on the ba ck of the computer. Try using t he scanner after reco nnecting each additional U SB device, and disconnect any USB devices that pre vent the sca nner from working correctly.
Test the scanner hardware If you think that t he scanner has a hardware problem , verify that the ca bles are firmly connected to the scann er, the computer, and the power source. If th e cables are correctly connected, verify that the scanner is tu rned on.

Scanner is sc anning items very slowly • If you ar e scanning to edit t ext, the optical chara cter recognition (OCR) software requires more processing t ime than for non-OCR scans, which is norm al. Wait for the item to scan. NOTE: For the best OCR result s, scanner compression should be set to th e minimum compressi on level or be disabled.

If the problem pe rsists, the button s might be disabled out side of the HP Scanner Tools Utility. Try the f ollowing procedure : 1. Open Control Panel , select Sca nners and Camera s , and then select your scan ner model from the list . 2. Display the scanner properties: • Windows 200 0: Click Properties .
Automatic document f eeder (ADF) problems Use this section to help resolve issues that m ight occur when scanning from the automati c document feed er (ADF). Paper jams usually result fro m inappropriate paper b eing fed into the ADF. Review the tips for using the AD F.
Scanned images contain str eaks or scratches When scanning with the autom atic document f eeder (ADF), fo llow the st eps below. Aft er each step, try another scan to see if the streaks or scratches are stil l apparent. If so, t ry the next step. 1. Check that the originals are cl ean and unwri nkled.
Scanned images are not straigh t When scanning with the automa tic document fe eder (ADF), make su re that the pape r guides touch the edg es of the original. Make su re that all documents are o f the same width. When scanning fro m the scanner glass, th e item might h ave shifted w hen you closed the lid.
4. Remove any jammed pages from the ADF output tray. 5. Close the ADF roller cover and access door. 6. At the scan destination, examine the scan output to determine w hich page was the last to be completely scanned. 7. Reload the unscanned pages i n the ADF input tra y.

Incorrect colors p rint, or th e image is too light or dark • The soft ware might be setting the exposure for th e entire area instead of for one slid e or negative. Select and drag the handles around th e selection area until you see the image area you wan t to scan.
