Control-panel h elp system The product has a built-in Help system that explains how to use each screen. To open the Help system, touch the Help button in the upper-right corner of the screen. For some screens, the Help opens to a global menu where you can search for specific topic s.
Touchscreen navigati on The home screen provides access to the product features, and it indicates the current status of the pro duct. NOTE: HP regularly updates fea tures that are av ailabl e in the product firmware. To tak e advantage of the most curre nt features, u pdate the produc t firmware.

Control panel men us The product has many menus on the control panel H ome screen to help you perform tasks and configure settings. NOTE: To learn about each menu option, touch the Help button in the upper-right corner of the screen for that option. Select the co rrect prin ter driver for Windows Printer drivers provide access to the product features and allow the computer to commu nicate with the product (using a printer language). The following printer drivers are available at www.hp .com/ support /ljm4555mfp_so ftware .
HP Universal Print Driver (UPD) The HP Universal Print Driver (UPD) for Windows is a single driv er that gives you instant access to virtually any HP Las erJet product, from any location, without downloading separate drivers. It is built on proven HP print driver technology and has been tested thoroughly and used with many software programs.
Priority for print settings Changes to print settings are prioritized depending on where the changes are made: NOTE: The names of commands and dialog boxes might vary depending on your software program. ● Page Setup dialog bo x : Click Page Setup or a similar co mmand on the File menu of the program you are working in to open this dialog box.
Change pri nter-d river settings for Windows Change the settings for all pri nt jobs until the software program is closed 1. On t he File menu in the softwa re program, click Print . 2. Select the driv er, and then click Properties or Preferences . The st eps can vary; th is proc edure is most com mon.

Software for Ma c Supported operating systems for Mac The product supports the following Mac operating systems: ● Mac OS X 10.5, 10. 6, and later NOTE: For Mac OS X 10.5 and later, Intel® Core™ Processor Macs are supported. The Mac printer driver can be installed from the softwa re installation CD that came with the product.
5. To configure the pr oduct software to recognize the installed acce ssories, complete these steps: Mac OS X 10.5 and 10.6 1. From the Apple menu , clic k the System Prefer ences menu and then click the Print & Fax icon. 2. Select the product in the left side of the window.

By default, Mac OS X uses the Bonjour method to find the d river and add the product to the printer pop-up menu. This method is best in mo st situations. If Mac OS X cannot fin d the HP printer driver, an error message displays. Reinstall the s oftware.

Software for Mac computers HP Utility for Mac Use the HP Utility to set up produc t features that are not available in the printer driv er. You can use the HP Utility when the product uses a un iversal serial bus (USB) cable or is connected to a TCP/IP-based ne twork.

2. Connect the network cable to the product and to the network. 3. Wait for 60 seconds before con t inuing. During th is time, the network recognizes the product and assigns an IP address or host name for the product. 4. Paper orienta tion for lo ading trays If you are using pa per that requires a specific orie ntation, load it according to the information in the following tables. NOTE: The Alternative Letterhead Mode and Image Rotation settings affect the way you load letterhead or preprinte d paper.

Load Tray 1 CAUTION: To avoid jams, never add or remove paper from Tray 1 during printing. 1. Open Tray 1. 2. Pull out the tray extension to support the paper and set the side guides to the correct width.
4. Make sure the stack fits under the tabs on the guides and does not exceed the load-level indicators. 5. Adjust the s ide guides so that they lightly touch the paper stack but do not bend it. Load Tra y 2 and optional Trays 3, 4, and 5 w ith standa rd-size paper 1.

4. Remove the new print cartridge from its pro tecti ve b ag. NOTE: Be careful not to damage the memory tag (callout 1) on the print cartridge. 5. Grasp both sides of the print cartridge and distribute the toner by gently rocking the print cartridge five or six times.
7. Pull on the orange tab to remove the toner sealing tap e. Completely remove the sealing tape from the cartridge. CAUTION: Avoid prolonged exposure to light. 8. Align the print cartridge with its s lot and insert the print cartridge until it clicks into place.
Replace the staple cartridge (for models wi th a stapler/ stacker) 1. Press the release latch, and then slide the stapler/stacker away from the product. 2. Open the staple-cartridge door. 3. Lift up on the staple-ca rtridge green handle, and then pull the cartridge out of the stapler to remove it.
4. Ins ert a new st apl e car tridge , push d own on it to snap it into place, and then close the staple- cartridge door. 5. Slide the stapler/stacker toward the product until it latches in p lace.

Copy mixed-size originals You can copy original documents that are printed on different sizes of paper as long as the sheets of paper have one common dimension. For example, you could combine Letter and Legal sizes. 1. Arrange the s heets in the original document so they a ll have the same w idth.
Copy on both sides (duplex) 1. Load the original documents into the document feeder with the first page facing up, and with the top of the page leading.

Initiate polling receive Some fax machines can hold a fax until another fax machine req uests that the fax b e sent. When a product polls a nother fax machine that is holding a fax and requests that the held fax be sent to the product, this is known as poll ing receive.

1 When the Fax Number is touched, a pop up is displayed which includes the PIN button for adding special character brackets ( [ ] ) to hide a PIN, and a Pause button to insert a comma for a two se cond pau se. NOTE: The PIN is for calling card numbers, no t for the security of fax ed documents.

Voice calls and retries Fax call report A fax call report is printed when the n otification fe ature has been enabled in the D efault Job Options or Mo re Op ti ons me nu. When all fax attempts have been exhaus ted, a fax call report will be printed for a fax send.
NOTE: Retriev ed stored faxes can be accessed by entering the Fax Printing menu and changing to the Print all received faxes mode. If the Prin t al l re cei ved f ax es mode is selected, then all incoming faxes will be printed. Any faxes that are currently stored in memory w ill also be printed.
Solve fax probl ems Is your fax set up correctly? Use the following checklist to help identify t he caus e of any fax related problems you are encountering: ● Are you using the phone co rd supplied with the f ax accessory? This fax accessory has been tested with the supplied phone cord to meet RJ11 and functional specifications.
Are you using a phone c ompany voice-mes saging service or an answering machine? If the rings- to-answer setting for the messaging s ervic e is lower than the rings-to-answer setting for the fax accessory, the mess aging service answers the call, and the fax accessory is not able to receive faxes.

Economy settings Powersave modes Use the Sleep Schedule feature to reduce power consumption when the product is inactive. You can schedule specific times of the day at which the pr oduct enters sleep mode or wakes from sleep mode. You can customize this schedule for each day of t he week or for holidays.
Set the sleep schedule NOTE: You mus t configure the date and time settings before you can use the Sleep Sc hedule feature. If you have already configured the dat e and time settings, you can s kip steps 2 and 3 in the following procedure. 1. From the Home screen, touch the Administration button.
Install external I/O devices This product is equipped with an external I/ O (EIO) slot. Y ou can install an a dditional HP Jetdirect print server card or external EIO hard drive in the available EIO slot. NOTE: This example shows installing an HP Jetdirect print server card.
3. Loosen and remove the two retaining screws hold ing the cover for the EIO slot, and then remove the cover. You will not need these screws and the cover again. They can be discarded. 4. Firmly insert the HP Jetdirect print server card into the EIO slot.
5. Insert and tighten the retaining screws that came with the print server card. 6. Reconnect the power cable and remaining in terface cables, and turn the product on. 7. Print a configuration page. An HP J etdirect configuration page that contains network configuration and status information should also print.
Clean the paper path 1. From the Home screen, touch the De vice Maintenance button. 2. Open the following menus: ● Calibration/Cleaning ● Cleaning Page 3. Touch the Pri nt button to print the page. 4. The cleaning process can take several minutes.

Clear staple jams (for models with a stapl er/stacker) 1. Press the release latch, and then slide the stapler/stacker away from the product. 2. Open the staple-cartridge door. 3. Lift up on the staple-ca rtridge green handle, and then pull the cartridge out of the stapler to remove it.
4. Lift up on the small lever at the ba ck of the staple cartridg e. 5. Remove the jammed staples. 6. Close the lever at the back of the staple cartridge.
7. Insert the stap le cartridge into the s tapler, push down on the green handle until it snaps into place, and then close the staple-cartridge doo r. 8.
Clear jams i n the output bin area 1. If paper is visible from the output bin, grasp the l eadi ng edge a nd remo ve it. Clear jams fr om under the top co ver 1.
2. Remove any jammed sheets that are visible in the print cartridge area. 3. If no jammed paper is visible, remove the print cartridge, and then remove the any jammed paper in the paper path. 4. Reinstall the print cartridge, and then close the top cover.

Models with a stapler/stacker : Release the stapler/stacker latch, and then slide the stapler/ stacker away from the product to remove it.
4. Slide the duplexer awa y from the product to remove it. 5. Carefully flex the left-hand side of fuser-entrance guide to release it, and then rotate the guide out and away from the product to remove it.
7. Clear the jam by carefully pulling the paper straight out. 8. Push the fuser straight into the produc t until it snaps into place. 9. Insert the right-hand side of fuser-entrance guide into the pro.
10. Slide the duplexer into the product to install it. 11. Models with a stapler/sta c ker : Slide the stapler/stack er toward the product until it latches into place to install it. 12. Models with a stapler/sta c ker : Re connect the staple r/stacker conne ctor.
13. All other models : Slide the output bin toward the product to install it. Clear jams i n the regi stration area 1. Pull the top cover release lever to open the to p cover, and then remove the print cartridge.
2. If jammed paper is visible under the registration shield use the green lever to raise the shield, and then clear the jam by gently pulling the paper straight out.
Change jam recovery This product provides a jam recovery feature that reprints jammed pages. 1. From the Home screen, touch the Administration button. 2.
Improve print quali ty You can prevent most print-quality problems by follo wing these guidelines. ● Use the correct paper type setting in the printer driver. ● Use paper that meets HP specifications for this product. ● Clean the product as necessary.
Print a cleaning page Print a cleaning page to remove dust and excess toner from the p aper path if you are having any of the following problems: ● Sp ecks of tone r are on th e print ed pages. ● Toner is smearing on the printed pages. ● Repeated marks occur on the printed pages.
NOTE: If you are using a draft or EconoMo de print se tting, the printing might appear light. HP does not recommend the full time use of Ec onoMode. If EconoMode is used full time, the toner supply might outlast the mechanical parts in the print cartridge.
