Supported operating systems for Windows The product supports the followi n g Windows operating systems: Full softwar e installa tion ● Windows XP (32-bit) ● Windows Vista (32-bit and 64-bit) Print.
UPD installation modes Traditional mode ● Use this mode if you are installing the driver from a CD for a single computer. ● When installed with this mode, UPD operates like traditional printer drivers. ● If you use this mode, you must inst all UPD separately for each computer.
Select the correct printer driver for Windows Printer driver s allow you to gain ac cess to the d e vice features and allow the computer to com municate with the device (using a printer language). Check th e installation notes and readme files on the device CD for additional software and languages.
Priority for print settings Changes to print settings are prioritized dep ending on where the change s are made: NOTE: The names of commands and dialog boxes might vary depending on your softwa re program. ● Page Setup dialog bo x : Click Page Setup or a similar command on the File menu of the program you are working in to open this dialo g box.
Software installation types for Windows The following so ftware installat ion types a re available: ● Recommend ed . Installs the full softwar e solution. ● Express . Installs t he print and scan d rivers only. There is an e xpress option for USB-connec ted products and another ex press optio n for network-connected products.

To change the setting s for all print jobs until the software program is closed To change the defau lt settings for all print jobs To change the de vice configuration settings These settings are saved in the Presets menu. To use the new settings, you must select the saved preset option every time you open a program and print.
The embedded Web server resides on the device. It is ava ilable on network and direct-connected devices. The embedded Web server provides an interface to the device that anyone who has a network- connected computer and a standard Web browser can use.
Use features in the Macintosh printer driver Print Create and use printing presets in Macintosh Use printing presets to save the current printer driver settings for reuse. Create a printing preset 1. On the File menu, click Print . 2. Select the driver.
Use watermarks A watermark is a notice, such as “C onfidential,” that is p rinted in the background of each page of a document. 1. On the File menu, click Print . 2. Open the Watermarks menu. 3. Next to Mode , select the type of watermark to use. Select Watermark to print a semi-transparent message.
Print on both sides of the page (duplex printing) Use automatic duplex prin ting 1. Insert enough paper into one of the trays to acc ommodate the print jo b.
Scanning tasks To scan to a softwar e program, scan an item usin g the program itself. Any TWAIN -compliant prog ram can scan an image. If the program is not TWAIN-compliant, save the scanned ima ge to a file then place, open, or import the fi le in the software program.
Photo In HP Director, click the Photo icon to launch the Photosmart Studio software. Use the soft ware to import photos from a memory card, ed it photos, and prin t photos from the PC.

Printer sharing disclaimer HP does not support peer-to-peer ne tworking, as the feature is a f unction of Microsoft operating systems and not of th e HP printer dr ivers. Service name Description BOOTP (bootstrap protocol) For Automatic IP address assignment. BOOTP ser ver provides the product with an IP address. R equires administrator to input the product MAC hardwar e address on BOOTP server in order for product to obtain an IP address from that server.

Understand paper and print media use This product supports a variety of paper an d other pr int media in ac cordance with the guidelines in this user guide.
Supported paper and print media sizes This product sup ports a number of pap er sizes, and it adapt s to various media. NOTE: To obtain best print results, select the appropriate paper size and type in the print driver before printing. Load paper and print media Tray 1 Tray 1 holds up to 150 pages o f 75 g/m 2 (20 lb) paper, or fewer pages of he avier media (15 mm (0.6 in)). Load media with the top f orward and the sid e to be printed on facin g down. Media guides en sure that the media feeds correctly in to the product and that the print is not skewed.
Configure tray When using tray 1 for a sp ecific size of paper, you can set the default size f or the tray in HP Toolb oxFX or from the control panel. In HP ToolboxFX, select Paper handling , and then select the size for the tray. To set the defau lt paper size or type from the control panel, complete th e following steps.

Economy settings Archive print Archive print produces o utput that is less susceptib le to toner smearing and dusting. Use archive print to create docume nts that you wa nt to preserv e or archive. 1. On the control panel, press Setup . 2. Use the arrow but tons to select Service , and th en press OK .

Define custom copy settings When you change th e copy settings at the control panel, Custom settings appears on the control-pane l display. The custom settings remain in effect for approximately 2 minutes, and then the product returns to the default settings.
Change the default media-typ e setting 1. On the product control pan el, press Setup . 2. Use the arrow but tons to select System s etup , and then press OK . 3. Use the arrow but tons to select Paper setup , and th en press OK . 4. Use the arrow but tons to select Default paper type , and then press OK .

Setting description Setting o ptions Neutral G rays The Neutral Grays setting determine s the method for creating gray colors used in text, graphics, an d photographs. ● Black Only generates neutral colors (grays and black) by using only black toner.
Match colors For most users, th e best method for matc hing colors is to print sRGB colors. The process of matching printer output color to your computer screen i s complex, because printers an d computer monitors use differen t methods of producing co lor.
Use the following proce dure to download the HP Basic Color Match tool through the software CD. 1. Insert the CD in to your CD-ROM dr ive. The CD auto runs. 2. Select Install mo re softwa re . 3. Select HP Basic Color Matc h . The tool download s and installs itself.
Advanced color use The produ ct provides auto matic color fe atures that generate excellent color r esults. Carefully d esigned and tested color ta bles provide smooth, accurate color re ndition of all p rintable colors. The product al so provides sophisticate d tool s for the experienced professi onal.
The latest version s of Adobe PhotoShop ® , CorelDRAW ® , Microsoft Office, and ma ny other programs use sRGB to communicate co lor. Because it is the default colo r space in Microsoft operatin g systems, sRGB has been adopted broadly.

Memory card failures If the memo ry card is rea d-only, then the device is unable to scan to it. An error message is displayed when trying to scan to the card. Un-lock the card i n order to scan to it. If the memory card is removed while scanning to it, then the scan is stopped.
Scan settings Scan file format The file forma t of a scanned documen t or photo depend s on the scan type as well as the ob ject being scanned. ● Scanning a document or a photo to a computer results in the file being saved as a .TIF file. ● Scanning a documen t to email results in the file bei ng saved as a .
Resolution and color guidelin es The following table describes the re commended resolution and color settings for diffe rent types of scan jobs. Intended use Recommended resolution Recommended color s.
Scan a book (photo card models only) 1. Lift the lid and place the book on the flatbed scanner with the page that you want to copy at the lower-right corner of the glass.
3. Gently press down on the lid to press the book to the flatbed scanner surface. CAUTION: Pressing o n the flatbed cover with to o much force can break th e lid hinges.
Scan a photo 1. Place the photo on the flatbed scanner with th e picture-side down and the corne r of the photo located as indicate d by the icon on the sca nner.

Fax features The product has the fo llowing fax features, which are av ailab le from the control pane l or from the product software. ● Fax Setup Wiza rd for easy fax configuration ● Plain-paper a.
Setup Install and connect the hardware Connect to a telephone line The product is an analog device. HP recommends using the product on a dedicated a nalog telephone line. For informatio n about using the pr oduc t with other telephone environments, see Use fax on a DSL, PBX, ISDN, or VoIP system on page 126 .
5. To connect a caller-ID box or a credit card scanner, plug a tele phone cord into the pr evious device’s “telephone” port. Plug th e other end of the telephon e cord into the caller-ID box “line” port. 6. To connect an answe ring machine, plug a tel ephon e cord into the previous device’s “telephone” port.
Use fax set-up wizard on the PC If you completed the so ftware installation, you are re ady to send faxes from your comput er. If you did not complete the fa x setup process at the time you installed the software, you can complete it at any time by using the F ax Setup Wizard.

If the fax number you are calling has a speed dial or group-dial entry, press Fax Menu , then use the arrow keys to select Phone Book . Choose Select an entry and use the alphanu meric buttons to specify th e speed dial or gr oup-dial entry, and then press OK .

Store supplies Follow these guidelines for storing print cartri dges: ● Do not remove the print cartridg e from it s package until you are ready to use it. CAUTION: To prevent damage, do not expo se the print cartridge to light fo r more than a few minutes.

8. Close the print-cartridge drawer. 9. Close the fr ont door. 10. Place the old print cartridge in the box for the new print cartridg e. Follow the recycling instructions that are included in the box. CAUTION: If toner gets on any clothing, wipe it off with a dry cloth and wash the clothing in cold water.

Clean the automatic docu ment f eeder (ADF) pickup roller assembly If the ADF has trouble feeding documents, clean the ADF pickup roller ass embly. 1. Turn off the produ ct and unplug the power cord.
