1 USB port Buttons and lights Use the printe r buttons to turn the printer on and of f, cancel a print job, restart a job, and open HP Photosmart Express software.
1 Power button and light The Power light flash es when the printer is processing . Caution Always use the Power button to tu rn the printer on and off. Usin g a power strip, surge pro tector, or a wall-mo unted switch t o turn the printer on and off might cause pr inter fail ure.
1 Resume button and light Photosmart Express button Use the Phot osmart Express butto n to open the HP Photosmart Express softw are. The HP Photosmart Express sof tware provides a fast and easy way to make prin ts of your photos or to purch ase prints online.
1 Connection light 2 Error light When the camera is connected correct ly, the Connect ion light is i lluminated. The Connection li ght blinks green w hen print ing from the camera. I f the camera i s not set t o the correct mod e for downloadi ng photos, th e Error light flashes.
2. Lower the outpu t tray. 3. Pull out the ou tput-tray exten sion. Input tray The input tray h olds paper or other media. 1 Input tray Paper guide Print on different size s of media by sliding the paper guide to the righ t or to the left .

Fold the pape r trays To fold the pa per trays 1. Remove paper or oth er media from the paper trays. 2. If the outp ut-tray extension stop is raised, lower it an d then push the second section of the output-tra y extension in . 3. Push the first section of the output-t ray extension into the output tr ay.

4 Connect to the printer ● USB USB The printer connects t o the computer w ith a universal serial bus (USB) ca ble. The computer must be runn ing Windows 98 SE o r later to use a USB cable. Note For best printing perf ormance, use a USB 2. 0 compatible cable .

4. Place the photo p aper in the righ t side of the input tray. The side t o be printed on should face dow n and the short edge should poi nt towards the printer. If you are using phot o paper that has a te ar-off tab, verify t hat the ta b is pointing away from t he printer.
4. In the Printing Shortcuts list, click Pho to Printing -Borderless , and the n select the following o ptions: – Print Qual ity : Normal or Best Note For maxi mum dpi qu ality, go to th e Features tab, and then click Maximum dpi in the Print Qual ity drop-down list.

Print brochures Guidelines ● Do not print bord erless brochures in ink-backup mode. Always have two print cartridges i nstalled in t he printer. For more information, see Ink-backup mode . ● Open the fil e in a software prog ram and assign t he brochure size.
Print greeting cards Greet ing cards ● Unfold pref olded cards, and then place them in the inpu t tray. ● For great results, use H P Greeting Card Paper. ● Do not exceed the i nput tray capacit y: 20 cards. Prepare to pri nt 1. Raise the out put tray, and the n remove all pape r from the input tray.
Guidelines Do not exceed t he input tray capa city: 100 sheets of paper. Prepare to pri nt 1. Raise the ou tput tray . 2. Slide the paper g uide all the way to the left . 3. Place plain p aper in the ri ght side of the input tray. T he side to be printed on should face down.
6. When prompted , reload the print ed pages in the p aper tray as show n below. 7. Clic k Continue t o finish pri nting the bookle t. Use the What's This? help to l earn about th e features tha t appear in t he Printer Prop erties dialog box.

Inkjet Transpare ncy Film, and then savi ng the modifi ed shortcut under a new na me; for example, Tran sparency Presentations. Af ter cr eating the pri nting shortcut , simply se lect it when prin ting on transpar ency film rath er than changing the print settings ea ch time.
Select a paper type When printin g a higher-quality docum ent, HP recomm ends that you select a specific paper type. To select a spe cific paper typ e 1. Open the Printer Properti es dialog box . 2. Click th e Features ta b. 3. Clic k More in th e Paper Type drop-down list, and th en select the paper type that you want to u se.
3. In the Pape r Type drop-d own list, sele ct the type of paper that yo u have loaded . 4. In the Print Quality drop-d own list, se lect the appropriat e print quality setting for your project. 5. Click th e Resolution button to view the p rint resol ution d pi.
4. Select one of th e following Page Order options: – Front to back : Prints the f irst page of the d ocument la st. This setti ng saves time because you do not have to reorder t he printed pages. It i s the appropri ate setting for most print jobs.
For example, if you h ave created a document that is formatte d for letter-size pa per, but you do not have any le tter-size pape r available, you can p rint the do cument on an other paper size that is availabl e. To resize a docu ment for a different paper size 1.
6. After the odd-numbered pages have been printed, rel oad the printed pa ges with the printed side facing up. 7. Clic k Continue t o print the even-nu mbered pages.

10 Printer software ● Make the H P Deskjet t he default printer . ● Set the default pri nt settin gs for all documents. ● Use the Printer Properties dialog box to sel ect printing op tions. ● Use the What's Th is? help to learn mo re about sp ecific print settings.
To save time when pri nting, set the def ault print settings to opt ions that you use o ften. That way, you do not have to specify the options e very time you use the pri nter. To change the d efa ult print settings 1. Double-click the H P Digital Im aging Monito r icon on the right sid e of the Win dows taskbar.

Download printer software updates Download the latest printer so ft ware update e very few months to e nsure you have the latest f eatures an d improveme nts.

5. Press down on the p rint cartridge, a nd then slide i t out of the pri nt cartridge crad le. 6. Remove the replacemen t print cartridge from its packaging and carefull y remove the plastic tape. H old the print cartridge so t hat the co pper strips ar e on the bottom an d facing tow ard the prin ter.
7. Slide the prin t cartridge at a slight up ward angle in to the cradle until the cartridge snaps into pl ace. 8. Clos e the printer cove r. Align the prin t cartridges for opt imum print quali ty. For information a bout storing pri nt cartridges, see Mai ntain prin t cartridg es .
To clean the print c artridges 1. Open the pr inter Toolbox . 2. Clic k Clean the Print Cart ridges . 3. Clic k Cl ean , and then follow the onscree n instructions. If your documents are sti ll missing lines or do ts after cleaning, manually clean the print cartridge co ntacts .
Maintain the printer body Because the HP Deskjet e jects ink onto the paper in a fine mist, ink smudg es will eventually appea r. To remove smudges, stains, or d ried ink from the exterior 1. Turn off the HP Deskj et, and then discon nect the powe r cord.
To prepare to c lean 1. Open the HP D eskjet cover. 2. Wait until t he print cartri dge cradle mo ves to the right side of t he HP Deskjet and is idle and quiet. 3. Remove the print cartridges and pla ce them on a piece of paper, with th e copper strips facing up .
Maintenance tips ● Keep all p rint cartridg es in the ir sealed packa ges until they are n eeded. Print cartridges should be st ored at room temp eratures (15° to 35° C or 59 ° to 95° F). ● Do not remove the plast ic tape covering the ink no zzles until you are read y to install the print cartrid ge in the printer.
Printer Toolbox The printer Toolbox contain s a number of useful t ools to enh ance the perf ormance of the printer. Use the print er Toolbox to perform t he following tasks: ● Align the pr int cart.

6. Turn the print er off, and then disconnect t he USB cable an d power cord. 7. Quit any antivi rus programs or oth er software progra ms that are runn ing on the computer. Note To quit an a ntivirus program, f ollow the manufacturer’ s instruction s.
Printer name doe s not appear If the printer software seems to install correctly, bu t the printer name does not ap pear in the list of prin ters when you click Print on the File menu or in the Printers fo lder in Control Panel, try reinstal ling the p rinter software.

Check the printer c able connection If your printer and comp uter are connecte d with a USB cable and the de vices are not communicat ing with each other, try th e following : ● Make sure the power cord is firmly connect ed to the p rinter and plu gged into a power outlet.
3. Clic k Stop , and then click Sta rt to restart the print se rvice. 4. Clic k OK to close t he window . If the printer still does not print 1. Select the topi c below that best describes the pro blem: – Paper jam – Out-of-paper m essage – Printer ejects paper – Printer is stalled 2.
5. Repla ce the rear access do or securely. 6. If the paper jam can not be remo ved from the ba ck of the print er, raise the prin ter cover, remove the pap er jam from the f ront of t he printer, a nd then lower the cover. Caution Remove the paper jam carefully as it is possible to damage th e printer when removing paper from the f ront.
Out-of-p aper message Follow the ap propriate steps fo r the condition that exist s. ● If the input tray contains pap er ● If the input tray i s empty If the input tray contains pa per 1. Verify the fo llowing: – A sufficient amoun t of paper is in th e input tray (at least t en sheets).
If there are no l oose or broken parts, follow these steps: 1. Check for and remove any obst acl es, such as packing tap e or materials, th at prevent the print ca rtridges from m oving back and fo rth. 2. Make sure the print cartridges are in stalle d securely in the print cartrid ge cradle.
3. Chec k the list of pr int cartridges that can be used in the p rinter. a. Open the pr inter Toolbox . b. Click th e Estimated Ink Level t ab. c. Click the Print Cartridge Information button and view the list of print cartridge selection numbers. The reference gu ide that came wit h the printer also shows the print cart ridge selection numbers.
"Print cartridge is in the wrong slo t" message If you receive this error message, the print cart ridge is instal led in the w rong side of the print cartridge cradle. Always install the tri-color p rint cartridge in the left prin t cartridge cradle compartment .
Horizontal line s appear on a ph oto If light or da rk horizontal l ines appear on ph otos, follo w this proced ure: 1. Clean the print cartridges. 2. Reprint the photo. 3. If horizontal lines still occur, perform a print qual ity calibration . A black and a tri-co lor print cartridg e must be install ed for print quality calibration.
Fading occurs near the edges of a photo If fading occurs approxim ately 25 to 63 mm (1.0 t o 2.5 inches) from the e dge of a photo , try the followin g solutions: ● Install a photo print cartridge and a tri-color print cartridge in the prin ter.
Front USB port lights ar e flashing 1 Connection light 2 Error light State of the lights Task Connection l ight and the Error light f lash for five seconds The printer h as lost connect ion with the camera while printi ng.
Print is faded ● Verify that neithe r of the print cartri dges is low on ink. For more information, see View estimat ed ink leve ls . If a print cartridge is low on ink, consider repl acing the print cartridge. Fo r the correct p art numbers, see the reference guide that came wit h the printe r.
● Document is pri nted off-cente r or at an ang le ● Parts of the do cument are missing or printed in the w rong place ● Envelope is print ed at an a ngle ● Document do es not reflect the new print settings Text and imag es are misaligned If the text and images on you r printouts are misa ligned, the n align th e print cartridges.
● Part of the photo is faded ● Photo has an un wanted bord er Borderless printing guidelines When printing borderless phot os or brochure s, follow these gui delines: ● Verify that the pa per si.
If light or da rk horizontal l ines appear on ph otos, follo w this proced ure: 1. Clean the print cartridges. 2. Reprint the photo. 3. If horizontal lines still occur, perform a print qual ity calibration . A black and a tri-co lor print cartridg e must be install ed for print quality calibration.
Fading occurs on the edges of a photo Verify that the p hoto paper is no t curled. If the p hoto paper is curled, place the paper in a plastic bag an d gently bend i t in the opposi te directio n of the curl unti l the pape r lies flat. If the p roblem persists , then use photo paper that is not curled.
For most paper typ es If the photo has an unwant ed border, try one of the follow ing solutio ns: ● Align the pr int cartridges . ● Open the Printer Properti es dialog box , click the Features tab.
HP Photosmart Express so ftware is not installed You pressed the Phot osmart Express butto n on the printer but the HP Phot osmart Express software is not in stalled on th e computer . The HP Photosmart Expr ess software must be installed on the computer be fore you can use the Photosmart Express button.
"Print cartridg e is in the wr ong slot" mes sage If you receive this error message, the print cart ridge is instal led in the w rong side of the print cartri dge cradle. Fo llow the i nstructions in "Print cartridge is i n the wrong slot " message to resolve the pr oblem.

To increase printe r speed, close all un necessary softw are programs w hen printin g. Complex do cuments, g raphics, or photos are pr inting Documents cont aining graphics or ph otos print more slow ly than text documents.
