1 Welcome Welcome to t he HP Deskjet D4300 Pri nter series Help. This g u ide prim arily explains how to use your computer an d the printer together. For more inf o rmation on transferring photos from di gital cameras and other USB devices to your comp uter using the printer, see the foll owing table an d select an appropriate topi c.

1 USB port Buttons and lights Use the printer butt ons to turn the printer on and off, cancel a print job, and resta rt a job. The printer li ghts give you visual cues a bout the status of the print er.
Power butto n and light Use the Power button to tu rn the pri nter on and off. It can t ake a few secon d s for the printer to turn on after you press th e Power button. 1 Power button and light The Power light flash e s when t he printer is processing.
Resume button an d light The Resume lig h t flashes w hen an action is required, such a s loading paper or clea ring a paper jam. When t he problem is solved , press the Resume button t o continue printing.
The Ink Level l ights show ink level information for each print ca rtridge, four for the tri-color cartridge an d four for the b lack/photo cartridge. 1 Tri-color print cartridge light 2 Black/Photo print cartridge lig ht 1.
Front USB port ligh ts To transfer photos from a digital camera, external card read er, or USB flash drive, t o your computer, just plug the camera or other device in to the printer's front USB port. You can then print t he photos using HP Photosmart Software.
Unfold the paper trays To unfold the pap er trays 1. Lower the input tray. 2. Lower the outpu t tray. 3. Pull out the output-tray extension. Paper trays 15 Get started.
Input tray The input t ray holds paper or ot her media. 1 Input tray Paper guide Print on differe nt sizes of media b y sliding the paper gu ide to the right or to the left . Output tray Printed pages are deposited in the output tray. 1 Output tray Raise the outpu t tray to load paper or ot her media.
To prevent paper f rom falling out of the out put tray, pull out both sect ions of the output- tray extension. I f you are printing in the Fast Dr aft mode, raise the output-tray extension stop. 1 Second section of output-tray extension 2 Output-tray extension stop Fold the pape r trays To fold the pa per trays 1.

Use print cartridg es The print cartridge s can be used in the fo llowing ways: • Everyday pri nting : Use t he black and tri-color pri nt cartridges fo r everyday print jobs.
NOTE: When the printe r operates in ink-backup mode, a message is displayed on screen. If th e message is displ ayed and two print cartridges are installed in the printer, verify that the prot ective piece of plastic tape has been re moved from each prin t cartridge.
4 Connect the printer • USB USB The printer connects t o the computer with a universa l serial bus (USB) cable. NOTE: For best prin ting performance, use a USB 2.0 compatible cable. For instruct ions about connecting t he printer with a USB ca ble, see the Setup Guide tha t came with the printer.
5 Print photos using the front USB port You can transfer ph otos from a digital camera, ext ernal card reader, or USB f lash drive to your computer, and then print them.
To print from the front USB port 1. Load photo p aper into t he printer. For instructions a bout loading ph oto paper, click o ne of the following op tions: • Print borderless photos • Print photos w ith a border 2. Connect your cam e ra or other U SB device to the front U SB port using a U SB cable.

6 Print photos The printer softw are offers several fe atures that make printing digita l photos easier and improve phot o quality. Learn how to print p hotos Print borderless photos . Print p hotos with a borde r . Learn how to perform othe r photo printin g tasks • Use the photo pri nt cartridge for great colors and virtually grain-free photos.
• Open the f ile in a software program such as HP Ph otosmart Soft ware and resize the photo. En sure that the size corresponds to the paper size tha t you want to u se. • For maximum fade resistance, use HP Premium Pl us Photo Paper. • Verify that the phot o paper that you are using is flat.
1. Open the photo i n a software program that allow s editing, such as HP Photo smart Software. 2. Open the Printer Properti es dialog bo x . 3. Click the Printing Shortcuts tab.
4. Place the photo pap er in the right side of the inpu t tray. The side to be printed on should face dow n and the sho rt edge should point towards th e printer. NOTE: Some paper sizes might extend beyond the edge of t he input tray. 5. Push the paper i n to the prin ter until it stop s.
4. In the Printin g Shortcuts list, click Photo Printi ng-with white borders , and then select the following op tions: • Print Quality : Normal or Be st NOTE: For maximum dpi quality, go to the Advan ced tab, and then select Enabled from the Maximum d pi drop-down list.
Photo print cartridge The photo pri nt cartridge, when used in conjun ction with the tri-color print cartridge, provides virtually gra in-free photos. It offers exceptional fad e resistance for ph otos that are printed on HP Premium Plus Pho to Paper.
To specify a dvanced color setting s 1. Open the Printer Properti es dialog bo x . 2. Click the Color tab, and then cl ick the More Color Options button.
Storage • Keep unused ph oto paper in a sealed plastic bag. Store the p ackaged photo paper on a flat surfa ce in a cool place. • When you are re ady to print , remove only the pa per that you plan to use imm ediately from the p lastic bag. When you have f inished printing, ret urn any unused photo paper to the plast ic bag.
If you performed the default t ypical installation of the printer software, you also installed the HP Photos mart Software. With HP Photosmart Softwar e you can easily: • Organize, edit, a nd share .

Print brochures Guidelines • Do not print bord erless brochures in ink-backup mo de. Always have two print cartridges install ed in the printer. For more information, see Ink-backup mode . • Open the file in a sof tware program and assign the brochure size .
Print greeting cards Greeting car ds • Unfold pre folded cards, and then place them in the i nput tray. • For great result s, use HP Greeting Card Paper. • Do not exceed the input tray capacity : 20 cards. Prepare to p rint 1. Raise the out put tray, and th en remove all paper from the input tray.
For example, whe n a four-page booklet is printed on both sides of the pa per, the pages are reorde red and printed like this: Guidelines Do not exceed t he input tray capacit y: 100 sheets of paper. Prepare to pri nt 1. Raise the ou tput tray. 2. Slide the pape r guide all the way to the l eft.
6. When prompte d, reload the printed pages in the paper tra y as shown below. 7. Click Continue to fini sh printing the booklet. Use the What's This? help to learn about th e features that a ppear in the Printer Properties dialog box. For more information, see What's This? help .

Prepare to p rint 1. Raise the out put tray, and th en remove all paper from the input tray. 2. Slide the paper gui de all the way to the left. 3. Place the iron-on transfe r paper in the right si de of the in put tray. The si de to be printed on shoul d face down.
8 Printing tips Learn how to use printing shortcuts, select a paper type , change the print resol ution, set the page order, print m ultiple pages on a sin gle sheet, previ ew a document, and use two- sided print ing. Click any o f the following links: Check your pr inter • Connect the printer .
NOTE: When you select a printing shortcu t the appropriate printing options are automatically d isplayed. You can leave the m as is or change them. This secti on contains the following top ics: • Us.
3. In the Printin g Shortcuts li st, click the pri nting shor tcut that yo u want to del ete. 4. Click Delete . The printing short cut is removed from the list . NOTE: Only the shortcut s that you have created can be del eted. The origi nal HP shortcuts cannot be deleted.
4. Click OK . 5. Select any other print settings that you wa nt, and then click OK . Change the print speed or quality The HP Deskje t automatical ly chooses a print qua lity and speed setting d epending on the paper type setting you se lect. You can al so change the print quality setting to customize the speed and qu ality of the pr int process.
To get the most benefit from maxi mum dpi mo de, use it to print high-qualit y images such as digital phot ographs. When you select the maximum dpi setting, the print er software displays the optim ized dots per inch (dpi) that the HP Deskj et printer will print.
3. Click Docume nt Options , and then click Lay out Options . 4. Select one of t he following Page Order options: • Front to back : Prints t he first page of the d o cument last. Th is setting saves time because you do not have to reo rder the printed pages.
Print multiple pages on a single sheet of paper You can print up to 16 pages on a sing le sheet of paper. To print multiple pag es on a single shee t of paper 1. Open the Printer Properti es dialog bo x . 2. Click the Features tab. 3. In the Pages Per Sheet drop-down li st, select t he number of pages that you want to appear on each sheet of paper.
To resize a document for a different paper size 1. Open the Printe r Properties dialog box . 2. Click the Features tab. 3. Click Sc ale to paper size , and then select the target pap er size in the drop-d own list. The target pa per size is the size of the pap er on which you are printing, not the size for which the docum ent was formatted.
6. After the odd-numbe red pages have been printed, rel oad the print ed pages with the printed side facing up. 7. Click Continue to print the even-numbered pages.

4. If your Web browser support s it, select th e items on the Web page that you w ant to include in the printou t. For example, in Internet Exp lorer, click the Options tab to select options such as As laid out on screen , Only the selected frame , and Print all linked documents .
9 Printer software • Make the HP D eskjet the default printer • Set default pri n t set tings • Printer Properties dialog box • What's Thi s? help • Download p rinter software up dates Make the HP Deskjet the default printer You can set t he HP Deskjet as t he default printer to use from any software program.
To save time when pri nting, set the def ault print settings to opt ions that you use often. That way, you do not have to specify the options every time you use the pri n ter. To change the d efa ult print settings 1. Double-click t he HP Digital Imaging Monitor icon on t he right side of t he Windows taskbar.
NOTE: The path to the Printer Properties di alog box can vary depe nding on the software program you are u sing. What's This? h elp Use the What's Thi s? help to lea rn about the fe atures that you see on the Printer Properties dialog b o x.

Choose cartri dge combinations for best r esults • Text and graphics: Combine tri-color and bl ack print cartridges. • Color photos: Com bine tri-color and phot o print cartridges. Always install the tri-color print cartridge in the left side of the print cartridge carriage.
4. Wait until the print cartridge ca rriage moves to the right side of the printer a nd is idle and quiet. 5. Press down on the print ca rtridge, and then slide it o ut of the print cartridge carriage. 6. Remove the rep lacement print cartri dge from its packaging an d carefully remove the plastic tape.
7. Slide the prin t cartridge at a sli ght upward angle into the carriage until the cartridge snaps into place. 8. Close the printer cover. Align print cartridg es for o ptimum print quality. For informati on about storing pri nt cartridges, see Maintain prin t cartridges .
To clean the print c a rtridges 1. Open the printer Toolbox . 2. Click Clean the Pri nt Cartridges . 3. Click Clean , an d then follow the onscreen i n stru ctions. If your document s are still faded aft e r cleaning , manually clean the prin t cartridge contacts.
Maintain the printer body Because the HP Deskj e t eje cts ink onto the paper i n a fine mi st, ink smudges will eventually ap pear. To remove smudges, stains, or dri ed ink from the exterio r 1. Turn off the H P Deskjet, and th en disconnect the power cord.
To prepare to c lean 1. Open the HP Deskjet cover. 2. Wait until the print cartridge carriag e moves to the right side of the HP D eskjet and is idle and quiet. 3. Remove the print cartri dges and place th em on a piece of p aper, with the copper strips facing up.
Print cartridge stor age and handling Follow these g u idelin es to help maintain HP pri nt cartridges and ensure consistent print quality: • When you remove a photo pri nt cartridge from the print e r, store i t in a print cartridge protector to preven t the ink from drying ou t.
To remove the print ca rtridge from the print cartridge protector 1. Press down and back on th e top of the prot ector to release the print cartridge . 2. Slide the print cart ridge out of the protect o r. CAUTION: Do not drop the print cartridge. D ropping the p rint cartridge can damage it.
11 Shop for ink supplies To find the print cartri dge reorder number, see the printed do cumentation that came with the HP Deskj et. You can also use th e software that came with the HP Deskjet to f ind out the reorder number fo r the print cartridg e.

To resolve the problem, foll ow the instru ctions in Resolving print cartridge error messages . Print cartridg e problem message The printer cannot pri nt if the print cartridge s are fault y, or if they are not installed p roperly.
Cause: A genui ne HP print cartridge was previously used in anot her printer. Original HP ink d epleted Solution: Follow the pro mpts on the computer screen to cont inue or replace the indicated print cartridges. For more in formation, se e Replace pri nt cartridges .
removed from each prin t cartridge. When plastic tape covers the print cartridg e contacts, the p rinter cannot detect that th e print cartridge is in stalled.
NOTE: Do not set the pa per size from the Prin ters folder or from the printer icon located in the lo wer-right hand cor ner of the screen next to the clock, because this will affect al l applications. Only set the pa per size in Microsoft W ord. To set the paper size in Micr osoft Word 1.
Installation pr ogram stops Cause: If the installation p rogram stops when i t looks for new hardw a re, on e of the following issue s is causing a commu nication problem: • The USB cable is old or d efective. • Software, su ch as an antivirus program, i s running.
To resolve the problem 1. Disconnect the US B cable from the printer. 2. Disconnect the pow e r cord from t he printer. 3. Wait approxi mately 30 seconds. 4. Reconnect the pow e r cord to the p rinter. 5. Reconnect the USB cabl e to the prin ter. 6. If the “Unkno wn Device” message is still displayed, replace the USB cable.
Printer lights are on or flashing The prin ter lights in dicate the p rinter status. 1 Power light 2 Resume light 3 Print Cartridge Status lights 4 Front USB port lights To resolve the pro blem that is causing the lights to flash, click the ap propriate link.
If the Power light is flashing, the printer is preparing t o print. The light stops flashing w h en the printer ha s received al l data. Resume light is flashing 1 Resume light If the Resum e light is flashing, check th e following conditio ns: • The printer mi ght be out of pa per.
Print Cart ridge Stat us lights a re on or flas hing The printer ha s two print cartridge sta tus lights. 1. The left statu s light represents the tri -color print cartridge, which is install ed in the left side of the prin t cartridge carriage. 2. The right stat us light represents the black or the ph oto print cartridge.
Otherwise, f ollow these ste ps: 1. Raise the printe r cover, remove the print cart ridge on the right, and then lower the cover. 2. Follow one of thes e steps: • If the Power light is flashing: Open the pr inter cover, reinsert the print cartridge that you rem oved, and then remove the ot her print cartridge .
• Solution 3: Clear the pri nt queue • Solution 4: Check the pr inter cabl e connection • Solution 5: Verify the printer dr iver configur ation • Solution 6: Check if the prin ter is paused or.
Solution 3: Clear the print queue Solution: Restart your comput er to clear the print queue. To clear the pri nt queue 1. Restart your comput er. 2. After the comput er has restarted, check t he print q ueue.
After reconn ecting the USB cable, the product should start printing the jobs in queue. NOTE: If you are connecting th e product through a USB hub, make sure the hub is turned on. If the hub is on, try connecting d irectly to your computer. 5. If the pr oduct does not start printing automati cally, start another print j o b.
6. Check the drive r listed in the Driver drop-down menu to verify that the pro duct is using the correct driver. The name of your product should be listed as the driver. 7. If the wrong driver is selected, select the correct driver from the Driver drop-down menu.
Solution 7: Clear the print queue man ually Solution: Man ually clear the pri n t queue . To clear the print q ueue manually 1. Depending upon your operating system, do one of the following: • Windows Vista: On the Windows taskbar, click Start , click Control Panel , and then click Printers .
Solution 9: Veri fy whether the software applicatio n is causing the problem Solution: Verify whether the software applicat ion is the problem. To verify the so ftware applicatio n 1. Close the sof tware application an d reopen it. 2. Try to print agai n from the software application.
Best or Maxi mum dpi print mode is selected The printer prints more sl owly when Best or Maximum dpi is selected as the print quality. To increa se the printer spee d, select a different pri nt quality mode. Printer is in ink-b ackup mod e The printe r might print more slowly if it is in in k-backup mode.
To determine wh ich cartridge is having the pr oblem 1. Make sure the printer is on. 2. Open the printer cover. Wait un til the pri nt cartridge carri age moves to the ri ght side of the printe r and is idle and qu iet. 3. Remove the tri-color pri nt cartridge f rom the slot on the le ft.
8. Check to see if the e rror has been resolved. • If the erro r has been resolved, then there is a pro blem with the bl ack print cartridge. • If the error has not been resolved, then there is a problem with both print cartridges. 9. When you have i dentified the problem cart ridge, continue with the following solutions.
5. Read the selection num ber on the print cartridge label and make sure it is compatible with your printer. Compatible p r int cartridge s are listed in the reference guide that came with your p rinter. 1 Selection number 6. If the print cartridge has the wrong selecti on number, inst all a new print cartridge.
Try the followi ng solutions: • Solution 1: Turn th e power off an d on • Solution 2: Clear any pa per jams • Solution 3 : Move the printer carriage • Solution 4: Verify th e power source • Solution 5: Re move and reinstall the prin t cartridges Solution 1: Turn the power off an d on Solution: Turn the po wer off and then back on.
Solution 3: Move th e printer carriage Solution: If the printer carria ge is still stuck, try moving it as described in the followin g procedure. To move the pr inter carriage 1. Press the Power button to turn off the printer, and th en disconnect the power cord from the pr inter.
Solution 4: Verify the power so urce Solution: Verify t hat the printer is pro perly connected to a suitable power source . To verify the p ower source 1. Verify that the compute r and the printer ha ve the correct power plugs depe nding on your country/regio n.
4. Remove the rear access do or. Press the handle to the right, and th en pull out the door. 5. Remove any paper that is inside the prin ter by pulling it out from the back of the pri nter. If you are p rinting labels , verify that a la bel did not b ecome detache d from the label sheet while pa ssing through the printer.
• Use a different t ype of paper. • Use only one type of pap er in the inpu t tray at a time. Printer ejects paper Solution: If t he printer ejects the paper, t ry one of th e followin g soluti ons: • Verify that the protective piece of plastic tape has been removed from th e print cartridges.
If this di d not solve the issue, try the n ext solution. Solution 3: Ch eck the paper Solution: Check the paper lo aded in the inpu t tray and the prin t settings. To check the paper in the input tr ay 1. While the product is on , remove the power cord from the back of the product.
4. Click the butto n that opens the Printer Properties dialog box. Depending o n your software application , this button might b e called Properties , Options , Printer Setup , Printer , or Preferences . 5. Click the Features tab. 6. In the Resizing Op tions area, click the appropriate pa per size from the Size list.
Solution 4: Use the HP Pa per Feed Cleaning Kit Solution: Some Deskjet produ c ts requ ire a special kit, called t he HP Paper Fe ed Cleaning Kit, to clean the pa per feed rollers an d resolve this issue. To see if t his affects your product, go to : www.
Solution 6: Contact HP s upport for serv ice Solution: If you have completed all of th e steps provided in t he previous solutions, contact HP support f or service. Go to: www.hp.com/support . If prompted, choose your country/region, an d then click Contact HP for information on callin g for te chnical support.
Check the printer pro perties Open the Printer Properti es dialog box and verify the fol lowing options: Tab Setting Features Size : An appropriate paper size Paper Type : An appropriate photo pa per Print Quality : Bes t or Maximu m dpi NOTE: For more information on enabling the maximum dpi mode, see Maximum dpi .
Fading occur s near the edges of a photo If fading occu rs approximatel y 25 to 63 mm (1.0 to 2.5 i nches) from the edge of a photo, try the fol lowing solutions: • Install a photo prin t cartridge and a tri-color print cart ridge in the printer. • Use maximum dpi mode t o print the photo.
Image is printed at an angle Solution: Verify that no problem exi sts with the so urce image. For example, i f you are prin ting a scanned image, veri fy that the image was not crooked when i t was scanned. If the problem is not caused by the source image, foll ow these steps: 1.
Verify that the pho to paper is not curled. If the photo paper is curled, place t he paper in a plastic bag a nd gently bend it in the opposite direction of the curl until th e paper lies flat. If the problem persists, then use phot o paper that is not curled.
If the printo ut has an unwante d border, try the f o llowi ng solutions: • Align print cartridges . • Open the Printer Pr operties di alog box , click the Feature s tab, a nd verify th at the selected paper size matche s both the pa per size that the p hoto is formatted for and the size of the p aper that is loaded in the printer.
