1. The left st atus light represents the tri -colo r print cartridge, w hich is inst alled in t he left side of the print cartridge cradle. – The light is on an d solid when t he tri-color print ca rtridge is low on ink. – The light flashe s when the tri-color p rint cartridge needs to be serviced.

4 Connect to the printer ● Wired Ethernet netwo rking ● Connecting a digital cam era ● USB ● Bluetooth wi reless printi ng USB The printer connects t o the computer w ith a univers al serial bus ( USB) cable. The computer must be runn ing Windows 98 SE o r later to use a USB cable.
Wired Ethernet networking For setup inform ation, click one of the foll owing opt ions: ● Ethernet basics ● What you need f or a wired network ● Install the pri nter on a n Ethernet network For .

The printer is de signed to ope rate on net works that u se a popular p rotocol cal led TCP/IP . IP address Each device on a netw ork identifies itself w ith a unique IP address.
has a different conn ector. An Ethernet cable connector (al so called an RJ-45 connector) is wider and thicker and al ways has eight contact s on the end. A phone connector has between tw o and six contacts . ● A desktop computer o r laptop with eit her a wired or wi reless connection to the rout er or access point.
This example looks simi lar to the first e xample. However, in this example, th e network devices are connected to a hub , rather than a router . The hub is directly conn ected to the Internet.
Note Do not pl ug the Ethernet ca ble into a port labeled WAN, Uplink, o r Internet. 4. Connect the Ethernet cab le to the Ethernet p ort on the back of the pr inter. 5. Do one of th e followin g: State of the Link light Task On Go to step 6. Off Repeat steps 2 throug h 4.
Software installation Follow these ste ps to install the pri nter software on the co mputer: 1. Close all app lications runn ing on the computer. 2. Insert the printer software CD in the computer's CD-ROM drive. 3. Follow the on screen instructions.

Select the langua ge The default language for t he HP Report page is English. Follow these steps to prin t the page in another l anguage: 1. Press the Report Page button to print the English version of th e page. 2. On the lower porti on of the page , find the langua ge that you wa nt.
Item Meaning DNS Server The IP addre ss of the printer's do main name server. Not Sp ecified means that no IP address has b een set. Thi s setting does not appl y to the printer. mDNS The printer's mDNS service name on the network. This name is use d by Apple Rendezvous t o identify the printer o n Mac OS X v10.
● Check estimated ink levels in the print cartridges. ● View network st atistics. ● Configure Bluetooth setting s . ● Visit HP's Web sit e for support informatio n and to p urchase suppli es. Caution It is recommended tha t the printer an d the compute rs that use it be o n the same subnet .
Paramete r Description Device Address The hardware ad dress of the Bluet ooth devic e. Note You cannot change this addre ss. Device Name The device nam e assigned to th e printer so th at other Bluetooth devic es can identify it. Passkey A 4-digit value that the user m ust enter in order to pri nt using Bluetooth .
Network ing glos sary numbers 10/100 Base-T : A technical term for Et hernet. 10 /100 refers to the spe ed at which the Ethernet network funct ions. 10 indicates 10 megabits per secon d (Mb/s) for normal Ethernet, an d 100 indi cates 100 Mb/s for F ast Ethernet.
h Host Name : The name by which the pri nter identifie s itself on the network. T he printer's host name is displayed on the HP Report page. Use the host name to open the printer's embedded W eb server (EWS). Hub : A simple device tha t acts as the center of an Ethernet net work.
p Packet : A message sent from one device on a network to other dev ices on the netw ork. Protoc ol : A langu age that devices on a network use to communicate w ith each other. A popular netwo rk protocol is T CP/IP. q r RJ-45 : The type of plug at the end of an Ethern et cable.
Bluetooth wire less printing Use an optio nal HP Bluetooth Wi reless Printer Adapter to p rint images fro m most Bluetooth devices to the printer with out a cable co nnection.
Configur e Bluetoot h settings The method to confi gure Bluetooth setti ngs for the printer de pends on whether th e printer is connec ted to a ne twork. If your printer is not co nnected to a networ k Note If your print er is not connected t o a network, you will need a USB cable to configure the Blueto oth settings.

5 Print photos The printer soft ware offers several features t hat make prin ting digital photos easier and improve phot o quality. Learn how to perfor m the following tasks: ● Print a borderless photo . ● Print a phot o with a border . ● Use HP Real Li fe technologie s to touch up photo s.
To print larger or multiple photo s, follow these steps: 1. Verif y that the printer is turned o n. 2. For small photos, remove the Out tray. For large ph otos, raise the Out tray. Remove all of the paper from the In tray. 3. Slide the pap er-width guide all the way t o the left, and then pull out the paper-lengt h guide.
4. In the Wha t do you want to do? drop-dow n list, click Photo Printing- Borderless , a nd then se lect the fol lowing options: – Print Qual ity : Normal or Best . Note For maximum dpi qu ality, go to th e Paper/Quality tab, and then click Maximum dpi in the Print Qual ity drop-down list.

5. Set the H P Real Life technol ogies as approp riate. 6. Clic k OK to print the phot o. Use the What's This? help to l earn about th e features tha t appear in the Printer Properties dialog box. HP Real Life technologies HP Real Life technologi es make it easy for you to get better ph otos.
The photo print cartridge can be pu rchased sep arately if it is not included wi th the printer. Install the photo print cartridge To install the pho to print cartri dge, remove t he black prin t cartridge from th e printer, and then install the photo print cartridge i n the right side of th e print cartridge cradle.
Note Use an HP prem ium photo paper w hen printing in th e maximum dpi mode to enhance color matching an d detail in the photo . Advanced color settings Use the Advanc ed color setting s dialog box t o adjust ho w printed colors appear in the photos.
Gray photo print cartridge The gray photo print cartrid ge, used in conjunction w ith the tri-color p rint cartridge, prints high-quali ty black-and-whi te photographs. The gray photo p rint cartridge can b e purchased separat ely if it is not included w ith the product.
5. In the Print Quality drop-down list, click Normal , Best , or Maximum dpi . 6. Select any other prin t settings that you want, and then click OK . The printer soft ware autom atically optimi zes the prin ted image. Store and handle photo paper Follow thes e instructions to maintain the qua lity of HP bran d photo pap er.

6 Print photos from a digital camera Learn how to prin t photos directly f rom a digital came ra. ● Use a PictBridg e camera ● Use a Bluet ooth camera phone Use a PictBridge camera With a PictBridge-ena bled camera, you do not need a com puter to print digital photographs.
Check the docum entation t hat came with the camera t o ensure that t he camera suppo rts PictBridge. Follow these ste ps to print phot os from a PictBrid ge-compatible cam era: 1. Verif y that the printer is turned o n. 2. For small photos, remove the Out tray.
Print photos from a Bluetooth ca mera phone 1. Verif y that the printer is turned o n. 2. For small photos, remove the Out tray. For large ph otos, raise the Out tray. Remove all of the paper from the In tray. 3. Slide the pap er-width guide all the way t o the left, and then pull out the paper-lengt h guide.

Guidelines ● Do not print bord erless documents in ink-backup mode . Al ways have tw o print cartridges i nstalled in t he printer. ● Open the fil e in a software prog ram and assign t he brochure size. Ensure tha t the size corresponds to the pa per size on which you want to print the brochure.
Print brochure s with borders 1. Open the Printer Pro perties dialog box. 2. Click th e Printing Shortcuts t ab. 3. In the Wha t do you want to do? drop-dow n list, click Presentation Printing , and then specify the following print sett ings: – Paper T ype : An appropriate b rochure paper.
Print Note If the sof tware program in cludes a greeting card printing feature, fol low the instructions that a re provided with the sof tware program. Otherwise, fol low the instructions b elow. 1. 8 Printing tips Save time ● Use the Printing Shortcut s tab. ● Create print task quick sets for documents that you oft en print. ● Use the 250-S heet Plain Paper Tra y Accessory to reload the printer l ess often. ● Set the order that the pages print.
4. Specify the print settings that yo u want. 5. Clic k OK . Use the What's This? help to learn about the feature s you see on the Printer Properti es dialog box. General everyday printing Use General everyda y printing t o print document s quickly.
Note Maximum dpi is availab le on the Paper/Quality tab. 4. Select any other prin t settings that you want, and then click OK . Note The print qu ality options th at are availabl e on the Printing Shortc uts tab vary depending o n the type of docum ent that yo u are printing.
5. Do one of th e followin g: –C l i c k File and then click Print to HP Deskjet to print the docume nt. –C l i c k File and then click Cancel Printi ng to cancel the pri nt job. Adj ust the prin t settings as need ed before trying to print the document again.
Follow thes e steps to select a spe cific paper type : 1. Open the Printer Pro perties dialog box. 2. Click th e Printing Shortcuts t ab. 3. In the Pape r Type drop-dow n list, click an appropriate paper type. 4. Select any other prin t settings that you want, and then click OK .
Note The printer software can save up to 25 print ta sk quick sets. Create a print task or use the specially designed print tasks that ar e availa ble in the Print Task Quick Sets drop -down list. Use a print task qui ck set Follow these st eps to use a print t ask quick set: 1.
Automatic Two-Sided Pri nting Accessory Auto Two-Sided Print Access ory with Small Paper Tray The two-side d printing accessories onl y support certain pap er types. Fo r a list of supported paper type s, see the documentat ion that came w ith the accessory.
1. Open the Printer Pro perties dialog box. 2. Click th e Finishing tab. 3. Select the Print on b oth sides check box. 4. Select the Use auto -duplex unit check box. 5. Select the Prese rve layout check box. 6. Select the Flip pages up check box. 7. Select any other prin t settings that you want, and then click OK .
7. Clic k Continue t o print the even-num bered pages. Create a bound two-sid ed document Select the type o f binding t hat you want for the two-sid ed document, and then follow the steps for that bi nding. Book binding Tablet bindi ng Note Book binding is th e most common t ype of binding.
1. Open the Printer Pro perties dialog box. 2. Click th e Finishing tab. 3. Select the fo llo wing check boxes: – Print On Both Sides (Manually) – Preserve La yout – Flip Pages Up 4. Select any other prin t settings that you want, and then click OK .
Resize a document Use the printer software fo r either of these tasks: ● Print a document on a pape r size differen t from the size for whi ch it is formatted .
Apply an existi ng watermark Follow these ste ps to apply an exist ing watermark to a docum ent: 1. Open the Printer Pro perties dialog box. 2. Click th e Effects tab. 3. Click a wate rmark in the Watermarks drop-down list. If you do not want to use one of the listed wate rmarks, create a new waterm ark .
9 Printer software ● Use the Prin ter Prop erties dialog box to select printing op tions. ● Use the What's Th is? help to learn mo re about sp ecific print set tings. ● Use the Printing Shortcut s tab to specify print settings quickly. ● View the Ink Status w indow for the app roximate ink level of each print cartri dge.
Note The Ink Statu s window may n ot display if the printer is operating over a non-Microsoft confi guration. Print cartridge information and ordering For print cartridg e information and to link to HP's Web site for orderi ng print cartridges, click the Print C artridge I nformation button.

6. Remove the replacemen t print cartridge from it s packaging and carefully remove th e plastic tape. H old the print cartridge so t hat the copp er strips are on the bott om and facing tow ard the prin ter. 1 Remove plastic tape Caution Do not touch the print ca rtridge ink nozzles or copper contact s.
8. Push down on the pri nt cartridge latc h until it snaps close d. 9. Clos e the printer cove r. The printer automati cally print s a calibra tion page. For information a bout storing pri nt cartridges, se e Maintain print cartridges . For information about recycling empty print cartridges, see Print cartridge recovery .
Align the print cartridges The printer automa tically align s the print cartri dges after a new prin t cartridge is installed . You can also align th e print cartridges at ot her times to ensure optimal print qual ity. To align print cartridg es: 1. Load Letter or A4 pl ain, white pap er in the In tray.
1. Open the pr inter Toolbox . 2. Click th e Estimated Ink Levels tab. Note If the pr int cartridges were use d before being inst alled in th e printer, th e estimated ink leve ls will not appear on t he Estimated In k Levels tab. The Estimated I nk Level tab also conta ins print cart ridge orderin g information.
Prepare to cle an 1. Open the printe r cover. 2. Wait until t he print cartridg e cradle moves to the right side of the pri nter and is idle and quiet. 3. Remove the print cartridges and pla ce them on a piece of p aper, with the co pper strips facing up .
If you store t he print cartridge in an airtight pl astic contain er, make sure that t he ink nozzles are face dow n but are not in contact with the cont ainer. Insert the print car tri dge into the pr int cartri dge protector Slide the print cartridge at a sl ight angle in to the protect or, and snap it secure ly in place.
Use the Toolbox Follow these in structions to use the printer Too lbox: 1. Open the Printer Pro perties dialog box. 2. Click th e Services tab, and then click the Servic e this devic e butto n.

State of the Link light Task Off Verify the following: ● The Ethernet cable is securely connect ed to the prin ter. ● The network hub , switch , or router is on and working properly. ● The printer is connect ed to the net work. Activity light Follow th ese steps if the Link li ght is on, b ut the printer does not print: 1.
If you still cann ot access the printer's EW S, then follow t hese steps: 1. Print an HP Report page . 2. Find the printer's IP ad dress . 3. Launch the I nternet browser. Note Use Microsoft I nternet Explorer 5. 0 or higher or Netscape 4.75 or higher.
Check the pri nter cable conn ection If your printer and comp uter are USB-connect ed and are not commu nicating with each other, try th e following : ● Make sure the power cord is firmly connect ed to the p rinter and plugg ed into a pow er outlet.
3. Push the two latch ha ndles on the printe r's rear access door toward ea ch other, an d then remove the door. 4. Remove any paper that is insi de the printer by pulling it out from th e back of the printer. If you are printing labe ls, verify that a label did not becom e detached from th e label sheet while pa ssing throug h the printer.
If the Auto Two-Sided Print Acce ssory with Small Paper Tray is attached to the printer, follow t hese steps to cle ar a paper jam Aut o Two-Sided Print Accessory w ith Small Paper Tray . Paper problems Printer does no t feed paper Try one or more of th e following so lutions: ● Reduce t he numb er of she ets in th e In tray .
Paper w eight The printer might print on multi ple sheets of pap er at once if the paper is under t he recommended paper w eight. Use pape r that is withi n the recommende d specifica tions. For paper weight specificati ons, see the ref erence guide th at came with the printer.
Caution First, check for any loose or broken parts in the printer. If you find loose or broken parts, go to www .hp.com/support or contact HP. Support phone numbers are liste d in the reference guide that came wit h the printer or at www.hp.com/support .
c. Click the Print Cartridge Information button and view the list of print cartridge selection numbers. The reference gu ide that came with th e printer also shows the print cartridg e selection numbers. 4. Chec k the warranty da te on the pri nt cartridge.
1 Remove plastic tape "Print cartridg e is in the wrong slot" messag e If you receive this error message, the print cartrid ge is installed in the wrong side of the print cartridge cradle. Always install the tri-colo r print cartridge in the left print cartridge cradl e compartment .

If fading occurs approxim ately 25 to 63 mm (1.0 to 2.5 inches) from the edg e of a photo, try the followin g solutions: ● Install a photo print cartridge in the pri nter. ● Open the Printer Pro perties dialog box, click the Paper/Quality ta b, and t hen se t the Print Qual ity to Maximum dpi .
