This chapter defines com mon term s used in the description of fonts and typefaces, and displays the print e r ’s resident typ efaces. Many of the terms and phrases used in desktop publish ing are derived from the language of profession al printe r s and type setters.
One way of classifying the diff erent t ypefa ces is to group them into the f ollo wing categ ories: A serif is a decorative li ne or tail on the ends of the strokes of a letter . Serif s, usually on the lower half o f a letter , have also been T imes Roman ref erred to as f eet or curlicues.
The terms “mon ospaced” and “fixed-pi tch” refer to a typeface whose characters all have uniform and equal spacing. These typefaces are useful f or spreadsheet s and other document s with colum nar data. Monospacing is the opposite of proporti onal spacing.
A scalabl e font is one in whi ch each charact er ’s dot pat tern (bitma p) is generated from a mathem atical representation (or outl ine) of the character . Scalable fonts elimi nate the need to store many differe nt font sizes. Point size refers to the heigh t of a proportional ly spaced typefa ce.
Orientat ion is the d i rection of the print or image on a page. Port rait orientat ion reads from left to right , across the narrower dim ension of the page. Land scap e orienta tion also reads from left to right but places the print across the wide r dim ension of the page.

Some times, rather than selecting an opt ion, you need to ent er char- acter inform at ion. A chara cter is any let te r , digit , or sym bol. A field is a group of characters that have meanin g. Collatio n is the printing of multiple copies of a document in numeric order . The QMS 1660E Print Syste m is collation capable . I t can delive r mult iple copie s of your files i n collat ed or uncol lat ed order t o the ou tput tray . If not enough me mory i s available, chunk col lation o ccurs.
Use the Admi nistra tion /Em ulat ions me nu to set the parame ters for the available printer em ulat ions. Sets the default font index when Select by Index is chosen i n the Admi nistrat ion /Em ulat ions/ PC L 5/Def ault Font m enu . If a font by the same index numbe r exists, it is selecte d as the defau lt font. This font must be a cart ridge or d ownloaded sof t font .
Adds an indicator which controls the way the print er interprets CR (carriage return) and LF (line feed) characters. Sets the number of lines printe d per inch in increment s of .0 1". Allows yo ur printer to emula te a monochrome or color plotter .
Identi fies the point size for scalable font s in 0.25 point increment s. Allows you to choose whet her to ret ain tem porary HP PCL5 fon ts and macros at the end of each print jo b.
Specifi es whethe r to enable or disable the printing of HP PC L 5 s cal - able fonts b y an application . This fea ture ma y be u seful when printing PCL 4 docum ent s whi ch m ay i nadvert ently select u nwant ed scal able fonts.
Sets the character set use d by t h e HP PCL 5 emulation . Choices Enable—Allow sel ectio n of scalable f onts. When you print PCL 4 documents, PCL 5 may su bstitute scalable fonts that could cause you r PCL 4 documents to print incorr ectly . Disab le—Pri nt using bit map font s o nly .
Indicate s whether long lin es are to be wrapped to the next line instead of being truncate d. Specifi es the type of charact er map to be used. Stipu lates whe ther each carriage retu rn (CR) in the print job is tr ans - lated to a c arri age return/lin e feed (CRLF) combinat ion .
Stipu lat es whether each form feed (FF ) in the print job is translated to a carriage ret urn/ form fee d (CRF F) combi nat ion. Stipu lates whether each line feed (LF) in the print job is translat ed to a carriage return/line feed (CRLF) combinat ion.

Use the Admi nistra tion /Di sk Operation s menu to perform disk opera- tion processes that appear only when op tion al hard disks are installed. ▲ Caution : If you connect to this printe r an exte .
Use the Admi nistra tion /Di sk Operation s/Instal l Option men u t o add optional fonts to t he hard disk from a font card. This selectio n copies data from the card to the hard disk.
Y ou can custom ize all of t he print er ’s interf aces through t he Admin is - tration/ Com m unicat ions me nu. Use the A dministra tion /Com municat ions/ Net work 2/ CrownNet men u to set the print er-host comm uni cati on values for the Eth ernet int er- face.

Allows yo u to specify which jobs are print ed first , according to the interface through which th ey are received, when jobs are received simultaneously . In other words, you can give jo bs received via the serial interfa ce priority over jobs received via t he other int erfa ces.

An option in the Operat or Cont rol menu allows you to select th e default tray or cassette ( i nputbin) from which med ia is drawn into the printe r .
Options in th e Adm ini strat ion/ En gine m enu allow you to give each inputbin a more descriptive name. These names are displaye d in the printer message windo w , whe re appropriat e.
While you can usually specify the orient ation of a print job in your applicatio n, if you consistent ly use a c ertain media orientat ion , you can set thi s in t he Operat or Co ntrol /O ri ent atio n men u . Even though there is on ly one ou tput bin , you m ay want to nam e it.
Use a n op tion i n the Ad ministrat ion /Engin e menu to i dent ify the size media the print should use if it does not recognize the size specified for a print job or if no size is s pe cifi ed. The amount of memor y needed for thi s mem ory client depends on the size and num ber o f hard di sks, the numbe r of subdirect ories o n each disk, and the amou nt of mem ory dedicate d to ca ching. » Note: If suff icient memory is available to the disk cache, all disks are access i ble.

The Fra me Buffer me mory client holds rasterized or bit map ped images of page faces which are ready to be sent to t he print engine . A f rame holds the conte nts of each single page imag e. If you are uncertain about how to configure your printer ’ s memo ry , use only the Admi nist ratio n/M em ory/Frame Buffer menu.
» Note: The printer does not all ow you to choose feat ures that d o not work with t h e amount of memo ry currently i nstalled. Using this opt ion d oes not change t he m edia size. It just ensures t hat you have enough mem o ry allocated to the appropriat e clients to print on the requested m edia size.
The K Mem for PSHe a p mem ory client , listed on the status page as Heap, is the number of kilobyt es of RAM dedicat ed to the PostS cript emulat ion interpret er . This mem ory cli ent holds do wnloade d Po st- Script em ulat ion fonts, operato rs, and form s.
When the sum of the Min K Spool for all interfaces is less than K Mem for Spool, memory is allocat ed as follows: 1 Interf aces with Min K Spool (in the Adm inistrati on/ Com mun ica- tions menu) value greate r than zero to receive their specif ied al lo- catio n.
Use the Installation menu t o pass w ord-protect the Operator Cont rol and Admi nistrat ion menus. The Installa tio n menu appe a rs when a n optional security card is i nstalled in your printer . See chapte r 6, “Printer Opt ion s,” for more inform ation on using a security card.
When a password is required to enter the Operator Contro l or Adm in- istration menu, the me ssage window displa ys ENTER PASSWORD when you use the Select key to ent er the me nu. E nte r the password or press the M enu key to return to the men u. If you specify the correct password, access to the select ed men u i s granted.
Through the Admi nist ration/Engi ne menu you can set print engine- related param ete rs. Usually , you don’t n eed to change the way im ages are placed on the printed pa ge. Bu t if you do, the Imag e Alignm ent option allow s y o u to adjust both the horizont al and the vertical placeme nt.
Horizontal and vertical controls are based on the leadi ng edge of the paper . Although they are consist ent , they may se em to b e reversed in function , depending on the leading edge of the pape r . Medi a fed lon g edg e first (for examp le , letter/A4) wi th por - trait-o rie nted p rin ting — horizont al and vertica l seem revers ed.
Y ou can enable or disable the warning buzzer the print engine sounds when it encounte rs an error (such as paper out). When a media jam or other similar error occurs, the printer has the capability of reprintin g the print job from the page on which t he jam occurr ed.
T wo toner cartridg e configu ration opti ons are available: Conserve T oner and T oner Out Act [io n]. T o help you co nser ve toner , your printer can simul ate draf t-qua lity printing. The am ount of toner used during prin ting is reduced by scree ning th e black d ots in a 1 :4.

If you have a h ard disk an d Do S ys Sta rt is enable d, when t he print er is turned on, the controller checks the hard disk for a P ostScript f ile named SYS ST A RT and executes t his file.
Use the Admi nistra tion /Special Pages menu to print special pages, such as status pages, calibrati on pages, hea der pages, and tra iler pages. Printing a statu s page is a two-step p roce dure: Ident ify th e type of status page yo u want to print, and then print it.
A calibrati on page helps you test and maintain optim al print quality . The calibrati on image contain s a gray-s cale chart that l ets you check print densit y and gam m a corre ction to get the best po ssib le gray scal- ing from your printer .
Y ou can select t he input bin (tray or cassette) from which the printer pulls media when print ing the header page. A t railer page is a separator page that prints after a print job to help users sort out the ir jobs and, if requested, ident ify print job errors.

The ES P (Emul ation Se nsing Processor) timeout is the ma ximu m number of seconds the printer uses to match an emulation be fore printing th e j ob in the E SP def ault e mul ati on (Adm ini strat ion/ E mul a- tions/E SP Def ault Emul men u).
The Post Script emulat ion time out is the maxim um number of seconds the P ost Script emu lation waits f or i ncoming d ata . The print job timeo ut is the m axim um number of seconds the printer processes a print job befo re it ends the job.

This chapter pro vides addit ional technical inform ation on mem ory managem ent , end job mode, the P S Protoco l option, and HP-GL color-to-grayscale conversion . An interf ace is the point at which two eleme nts connect so they can work togeth er .
HP -GL emu lat ion, HP-P CL emul ati on, or another opti onal em ulat ion) from those inst alle d on t he printe r . The print job is proce ssed wi t hout your having to change printer switch settings or send software comm ands to accommodate dif fer- ent prin ter em ulat ions.
Configurin g the printer through the control panel is described in c h ap- ter 4, “Print er Confi gurati on, ” o f this ma nual. Gamm a correction is the com pression or expansion of t he ranges of dark or light shades i n a printed image to provide the best copy of scanned images.

The follow ing illu strat ion shows the relat ionshi p betwee n screen fre- quency, gray levels, and print resolution. As the screen frequency increases, t he number of gray le vels de crease s. The number of gray levels that your printe r can produce depends on the screen frequency and the print resolutio n.
Often i n scanned images, gray scaling may be too light or dark to show details clearly . Using gamma corr ection on a gray-s cale image is similar to using a graphic equalizer on a home stereo; the range of gray levels is adj usted for the best possible i mage .

A security card allows the Operat or Co ntrol and A dmin istrat ion men us to be password protected, so onl y users who know the password can change print er conf igurat ion sett ings. When a security card is i nserted to one of the card slo ts, the Inst alla tion menu app ears in the print er's configurat ion me nu.
3 Selec t the pa sswo rd. Use the Installation menu to password-protect the Operator C on- trol and Adm inist rati on menus. The I nstal lat ion me nu appears only when an optional security card is installed in your printer .
If an invalid password is entered, the m essage window flashes INVALID PASSWORD for three seconds and then returns you t o the configurat ion menu. If you s peci fy the correct password, access to the selected menu is gra nted.

The emulat ion is ready t o be used. The QM S Kanj i Option Kit contain s a pre-format ted IDE hard disk that contains Kanj i font s and other files. The Kan ji fonts include Ryum in Light-K L and Got hic BBB-M edium (licensed to QMS by Mo risawa and Company , Ltd.
If you already have an IDE-S CS I board install ed in the print er , you do no t need to purchase anot her bo ard on which to instal l t he Kanji hard disk. However , you do have to rem ove the IDE -SCSI bo ard from the printer before you can instal l t he hard disk.
The system software in your QMS 1660E Print System is stored on 4 MB o f flash mem ory that can be erased and rewritten t o “in a flash.” This allows you t o update the system software w ithout o pening up the printer and instal ling new PROM s. Updat ed s ystem softwa re allows you to take advantage of fut ure enhancem ents to the print er .
System software is contained on 8 disks—4 PC and 4 Macintosh. The disks you use depend o n whether your printer is funct ioni ng or not, the current firmware ve rsion, and how you plan to download the sys- tem software to the printe r .
