The left stat us light repres ents the tri-colo r print cartridg e, which is in stalled i n the left side of t he print ca rtridge cradl e. – The light is on and sol id when the t ri-color print cartridge i s low on ink. – The light flashes wh en the tri-color print cart ridge needs t o be serviced.

1 Out tray 2 Photo/envelope feed er Use the photo/envelope feede r to print single envelopes, small p hotos, and ca rds. Raise the Out tray to load paper or other media . Lower the Out tray bef ore printing. To prevent paper from fal ling out of the O ut tray, fully pul l out the Out-tr ay extension.
Photo/envelope feeder Use the photo/e nvelope feeder to p rint a variety o f media sizes including the following documents: ● Envelopes ● Photos ● Postcards 1 Photo/envelope feed er Envelopes Follow these ste ps to use the phot o/envelope feeder for single en velopes: 1.

Exit ink-bac kup mode Install two print cart ridges in the printer to exit ink-backup mode. For instructions ab out instal ling a print cartridg e, see the print cartridge inst allation page . Automatic paper-type sensor The HP automati c paper-type sensor detects the pape r in the printer, an d then selects optimal print settings for that media.
4 Connect to the printer ● Wired Ethernet networking ● Connecting a di gital camera ● USB ● Bluetooth wire less printing USB The printer connects to th e computer with a universal serial bus ( USB) cable. The computer must be running Windows 98 SE or later to use a USB cable.
Wired Ethernet networking For setup inform ation, click one of the following options: ● Ethernet basics ● What you need for a wire d network ● Install the pri nter on an Ethern et network For a .
1 RJ-45 plug Network com munication TCP/IP Devices on a network communic ate with one anoth er using a "langu age" called a protocol . The pri nter is designed to operate o n networks that use a pop ular protocol cal led TCP/IP . IP address Each device on a network ident ifies itself with a u nique IP address.
has a different connect or. An Ethernet cable connector (also call ed an RJ-45 connector) is wider and thicker and alw ays has eight contacts on the en d. A phone connector has between two an d six contacts. ● A desktop computer or lap top with eithe r a wired or wireless conn ection to the ro uter or access point.
This example looks simila r to the first examp le. However, in this example, the netwo rk devices are connected to a hub , rather th an a router . The hub is directly co nnected to the Internet.
Note Do not plug the Ethernet cable i nto a port la beled WAN, Upli nk, or Internet. 4. Connect the Ethernet cable to the Ethernet port on th e back of the printer. 5. Do one of the fo llowing: State of the Link light Task On Go to step 6 . Off Repeat steps 2 through 4.
Software installation Follow these steps to install the print er software on the compute r: 1. Close all applica tions runnin g on the comput er. 2. Insert the printer software CD in the computer's CD-ROM drive. 3. Follow the onscre en instructions.

Status of the icon Status of the printer network connection Off Not connected to an Ethe rnet network. HP Report page The HP Report pag e supplies useful information abo ut the printer's wired an d front USB port connections.
Select th e language The default la nguage for the HP R eport page is English . Follow these ste ps to print the page in another lang uage: 1. Press the Report Page button to print the En glish versio n of the page . 2. On the lower portion o f the page, find t he language tha t you want.
Item Meaning DNS Server The IP addre ss of the printer's domain name server. Not Specifie d means that no IP address has been set . This setti ng does not apply to the printer. mDNS The printer's mDNS service name on the network. This name is used b y Apple Rendezvous to id entify the p rinter on Mac OS X v10.
● Check estimated ink levels in the pr int cartridges. ● View network stati stics. ● Configure Bluetooth settings . ● Visit HP's Web site fo r support information and to purchase supplies. Caution It is recommended that t he printer and t he computers tha t use it be on the same subnet .
Parameter Description Device Address The hardware address o f the Bluetoot h device. Note You cannot change this addres s. Device Name The device nam e assigned to the pri nter so that ot her Bluetooth devices ca n identify it. Passkey A 4-digit value tha t the user must ent er in order to print u sing Bluetooth.
Network ing glossa ry numbers 10/100 Base-T : A technical te rm for Ethern et. 10/10 0 refers to the speed at wh ich the Ethernet network function s. 10 indicates 10 megabits per secon d (Mb/s) for normal Ethernet, and 100 indicate s 100 Mb/s for Fast Ethern et.
h Host Name : The name by which the print er identifies it self on the n etwork. The pri nter's host name is displayed on the HP R eport page. Use the host name to open the print er's embedded Web server (EWS). Hub : A simple device that act s as the center of an Et hernet network.
p Packet : A message sent from one device on a netwo rk to other devices on the network. Protocol : A langu age that devices on a network use to co mmunicate with ea ch other. A popular network pr otocol is TCP/ IP. q r RJ-45 : The type of plug at th e end of an Et hernet ca ble.
Bluetooth wire less printing Use an optional HP Bluetooth Wireless Pri nter Adapter to print images from most Bluetooth devices to the printer without a cable connectio n.
Configure Bluetooth s ettings The method to configure Bluetooth settings f or the printer depends on whether the printer is connec ted to a network. If your printer is not co nnected to a network Note If your printer is not con nected to a netw ork, you will need a USB cable t o configure the Bluetooth settin gs.
Option Description selected, only sending devi ces that have st ored the printer's Bluetooth devic e address can discover and us e the printer. ● EWS : Se lect one of the follo wing options: – Visible t o All : Any Blu etooth device withi n range can print to the printer.
8. As appropriate, select from the followin g check boxes: – Enable raw file type : Sends an unprocessed file (such as .PD F) directly to the printer. – Set as default printer : Sets the current printer as the defa ult printer. 9. Tap Fini sh . The Config uration screen is displayed.
5 Print photos The printer software o ffers several fea tures that ma ke printing dig ital photos ea sier and improve phot o quality. Learn how to perfor m the following tasks: ● Print a borderless photo . ● Print a photo with a border . ● Use HP Real Life technologies to to uch up photos.
To print larger or mul tiple photos, follow these steps: 1. Verify t hat the prin ter is turn ed on. 2. For small photos, remove the Out tray. For large photos, raise the Ou t tray. Remo ve all of the paper from th e In tray. 3. Slide the paper-w idth guide all the way to the l eft, and the n pull ou t the paper-len gth guide.
4. In the What do you wan t to do? drop-down list, cli ck Photo Printing- Borderless , an d then sele ct the followi ng options: – Print Quality : Normal or Best . Note For maximum dpi qual ity, go to the Paper/Quality tab, and then click Maximum dpi in the Print Quality drop-down li st.

5. Set the HP Real Life technolog ies as appropriat e. 6. Click OK to print the photo. Use the What's This? help to lea rn about the fea tures that appear i n the Print er Properties dialog box. HP Real Life technologies HP Real Life tech nologies make it easy for you to get b etter photos.
The photo p rint cartridge can be purchased separately if it is not included with the printer. Install the photo print cartridge To install the photo p rint cartridg e, remove the bla ck print cartridge from the print er, and then install the photo print cartridge in th e right side of the print cartridge cradl e.
Note Use an HP premiu m photo paper when prin ting in the maximu m dpi mode to enhance colo r matching and de tail in t he photo. Advanced color settings Use the Advanced color settings dialog box to adjust how printe d colors appear in the photos.
Gray photo print cartridge The gray photo print cartridge, used in conjunction with the tri-color print cart ridge, prints high-quali ty black-and-white ph otographs. The gray photo print cartridge can be purch ased separately if it is not includ ed with the product.
5. In the Print Quality drop-down list, click Normal , Best , or Maximum dpi . 6. Select any other print set tings that you w ant, and then cli ck OK . The printer softw are automatic ally optimizes t he printed i mage. Store and handle photo paper Follow these in structions to mainta in the quality of HP brand phot o paper.

6 Print photos from a digital camera Learn how to print ph otos directly from a digital camera. ● Use a PictBridge camera ● Use a Bluetoot h camera phon e Use a PictBridge camera With a PictBridge-ena bled camera, you do no t need a comput er to print dig ital photographs.
Check the document ation that came with the camera to ensure that the camera su pports PictBridge. Follow these steps to print photos fr om a PictBridge-compa tible camera: 1. Verify t hat the prin ter is turn ed on. 2. For small photos, remove the Out tray.
Print photos from a Bluetooth came ra phone 1. Verify t hat the prin ter is turn ed on. 2. For small photos, remove the Out tray. For large photos, raise the Ou t tray. Remo ve all of the paper from th e In tray. 3. Slide the paper-w idth guide all the way to the l eft, and the n pull ou t the paper-len gth guide.

Guidelines ● Avoid using envelopes th at have the following f eatures: – Clasps or wi ndows – Thick, irregular, or curled edges – Shiny or embossed coatings – Wrinkles, tears, or ot her damage ● Align the envelope edges b efore inserting the envelopes in the In tray.
Guidelines ● Do not print borderless docum ents in ink-backup mode . Always have two pri nt cartridges install ed in the p rinter. ● Open the file in a software program an d assign the brochu re size. Ensure that the size corresponds to the paper si ze on which you want to print the brochure.
Print brochures with borders 1. Open the Printer Propert ies dialog box. 2. Click the Pri nting Shortcuts tab. 3. In the What do you wan t to do? drop-down list, cli ck Presentation Printing , and then specify the f ollowing prin t settings: – Paper Ty pe : An appropriate b rochure paper.
Print Note If the softw are program includ es a greeting card prin ting feature , follow the instructions that ar e provided with the softw are program. Otherw ise, follow the instructions below . 1. Open the Printer Propert ies dialog box. 2. Click the Paper/Quality ta b, and then speci fy the following pri nt settings.

Guidelines ● After the sections of a poster h ave been printed, t rim the edges of t he sheets and tape the shee ts together. ● Do not exceed the In tray cap acity: 150 sheet s of paper. Prepare to print 1. Verify t hat the prin ter is turn ed on.
3. Click the Fi nishing tab, and then specif y the following prin t settings: – Pages Per Sheet and Po sters : Poster 2 x 2 , Poster 3 x 3 , Poste r 4 x 4 , or Poster 5 x 5 – Orientation : Portrait or Landscape 4. Select any other print set tings that you w ant, and then cli ck OK .
Print Note If the software program incl udes an iron-o n transfer printing fe ature, follow the instructions that a re provided with the sof tware program.

Slide the paper-w idth guide all the way to the l eft, and the n pull ou t the paper-len gth guide. 4. Insert one sheet, push ing it all the way in to the printer un til it stops.
8 Printing tips Save time ● Use the Printing Shortcuts tab. ● Create print task quick sets for documents t hat you often print . ● Use the 250-She et Plain Paper Tray Accessory to reload the print er less often. ● Set the order that the pages print.
4. Specify the print sett ings that you want . 5. Click OK . Use the What's This? help to learn about t he features you see o n the Printer Properties dialog box. General everyday printing Use General everyday printing to print documents quickly.
Note Maximum dpi is availab le on the Paper/Quality tab. 4. Select any other print set tings that you w ant, and then cli ck OK . Note The print quali ty options that are available on the Printing Shor tcuts tab vary depending on th e type of document th at you are printing.
5. Do one of the fo llowing: –C l i c k File and then click Print to HP Deskjet to print the document. –C l i c k File and then click Cancel Printing t o cancel the print job. Adjust th e print settings as needed b efore trying to p rint the docu ment again.
Follow these ste ps to select a specif ic paper type: 1. Open the Printer Propert ies dialog box. 2. Click the Pri nting Shortcuts tab. 3. In the Paper Typ e drop-down list, click an approp riate paper t ype. 4. Select any other print set tings that you w ant, and then cli ck OK .
Note The printer software can save up to 25 print ta sk quick sets. Create a print task or use the specially designed print tasks that are availa ble in the Print Task Quick Sets drop -down list. Use a print task quick s et Follow these st eps to use a print task quick set: 1.
Automatic Two-Sided Print ing Accessory Auto Two-Sided Print Access ory with Small Paper Tray The two-sided pri nting accessories only support ce rtain paper t ypes. For a list o f supported paper types, see the documentatio n that came with t he accessory.
1. Open the Printer Propert ies dialog box. 2. Click the Fi nishing tab. 3. Select the Print on both si des check box. 4. Select the Use auto-dup lex unit check box. 5. Select the Preserve layout check box. 6. Select the Flip p ages up check box. 7. Select any other print set tings that you w ant, and then cli ck OK .
7. Click Continue to print t he even-numbered pages. Create a bound two-sid ed document Select the type of b inding that you want for th e two-sided docu ment, and th en follow the steps for that bind ing. Book binding Tablet binding Note Book binding is th e most common type of bi nding.
1. Open the Printer Propert ies dialog box. 2. Click the Fi nishing tab. 3. Select the follo wing check boxes: – Print On Both Sides (Manually) – Preserve Layou t – Flip Pages Up 4. Select any other print set tings that you w ant, and then cli ck OK .
Resize a document Use the printer software fo r either of these tasks: ● Print a document on a paper si ze different from th e size for which it is fo rmatted.
Apply an existing watermark Follow these steps to apply an existing wate rmark to a document: 1. Open the Printer Propert ies dialog box. 2. Click the Effects tab. 3. Click a watermark in the Watermarks drop-down list. If you do not want to u se one of the listed watermarks, create a new watermark .
9 Printer software ● Use the Prin ter Proper ties dialog box to select printing options. ● Use the What's This ? help to learn more about speci fic print set tings. ● Use the Printing Shortcuts tab to specify print settings quickly. ● View the Ink Status wind ow for the approxim ate ink level of each print cartridge.
Note The Ink Status wi ndow may not disp lay if the pri nter is operatin g over a non-Microsoft configu ration. Print cartridge info rmation and order ing For print cartridge in formation and to link to HP's Web site f or ordering print cartri dges, click the Print Ca rtridge Infor mation but ton.
10 Maintenance ● Install print ca rtridges ● Set the auto-of f feature ● Align the prin t cartridges ● Calibrate colo r ● Automatically clea n print cartridges ● Print a test page ● View.

6. Remove the replacement pri nt cartridge from its packaging and carefully remove the plastic tape. Hol d the print cartri dge so that t he copper strips a re on the bo ttom and facing tow ard the printe r. 1 Remove plastic tape Caution Do not touch the print cartri dge ink nozzles or coppe r contacts.
8. Push down on the print ca rtridge latch until it snap s closed. 9. Close the printer cover. The printer aut omaticall y prints a calibration page. For information a bout storing print cartri dges, see Maintain prin t cartridg es . For information about recycling empty print cartridges, see Print cartridge recovery .
Align the print cartridges The printer automati cally aligns the p rint cartridges aft er a new print cartridge is i nstalled. You can also align the pri nt cartridges at other tim es to ensure optimal print quality. To align print cartridges : 1. Load Letter or A4 plai n, white paper in th e In tray.
1. Open the prin ter Toolbox . 2. Click the Estimated Ink Levels tab. Note If the print cartridges were used be fore being install ed in the print er, the estimated ink levels w ill not appear on the Est imated Ink Le vels tab. The Estimated Ink Le vel tab also contains p rint cartridge ordering informa tion.
Prepare to clean 1. Open the printer cove r. 2. Wait until the print cartridge cradl e moves to the right sid e of the printer and is i dle and quiet. 3. Remove the print ca rtridges and place them o n a piece of paper, w ith the copper strips facing up.
If you store the p rint cartridge in an ai rtight plastic co ntainer, make sure that the in k nozzles are face down but are not in contact wi th the container. Insert the print cartri dge into the prin t cartridge p rotector Slide the print cart ridge at a slig ht angle into the pro tector, and snap it securely in place.
Use the Toolbox Follow these instruct ions to use the printer Toolbox: 1. Open the Printer Propert ies dialog box. 2. Click the Services tab, and then click the Service this device button.
11 Troubleshooting ● Ethernet problems ● Printer does not p rint ● Paper jam ● Paper proble ms ● Paper mismatch ● Printer is stalled ● Print cartridge problems ● Photos do not pri nt c.
State of the Link light Task Off Verify the following: ● The Ethernet cable is securely connect e d to the printer. ● The network hub , switch , or router is on and working properly. ● The printer is connected to the network. Activity light Follow the se steps if the Link light is on, but the pri nter does not print: 1.
If you still cannot access the printer's EWS, then f ollow these steps: 1. Print an HP Report page . 2. Find the printer's IP address . 3. Launch the Internet browser. Note Use Microsoft Int ernet Explorer 5. 0 or high er or Netscape 4.75 or higher.
Check the printe r cable connecti on If your printer and comput er are USB-connected and a re not communicati ng with each other, try the f ollowing: ● Make sure the power cord is f irmly connected to the printer and plugged into a power outlet. ● Check the USB cable.
3. Push the two latch handl es on the printer's rear a ccess door toward each othe r, and then remove the door. 4. Remove any paper that is inside the printer by pulling i t out from the back of t he printer. If you are printing labels, ve rify that a label did not become detached f rom the label sheet while passi ng through the pri nter.
If the Auto Two-Sided Print Acce ssory with Small Pa per Tray is attached to th e printer, f ollow these steps to clear a paper j am Auto Two-Sided Print Accessory wi th Small Paper Tray . Paper problems Printer does not feed paper Try one or more of the fo llowing solut ions: ● Reduce th e number of sheets i n the In tra y.
Paper we ight The printer might prin t on multiple shee ts of paper at once if the paper is unde r the recommended paper wei ght. Use paper that is within the recommended sp ecifications. For paper weight specifications, see the reference gu ide that came w ith the print er.
Caution First, check for any loose or broken parts in the prin ter. If you find loose or broken parts, go to www.h p.com/support or contact HP. Support ph one numbers are listed in the reference guide tha t came with the printe r or at www.hp.com/support .
c. Click the Print Cartridge Information button and view the list of print cartridge selection numbers. The reference guide that came with the print er also shows the print cartridge selection numbers. 4. Check th e warranty date on the print cartridge.
1 Remove plastic tape "Print cartridg e is in the wrong slo t" message If you receive thi s error message, the pri nt cartridge is inst alled in the w rong side of th e print cartridge cra dle. Always install the tri-colo r print cartridge in the left print cartridge cradle compartment.
Both a photo p rint cartridge and a tri-color print cartridge must b e installed for col or calibrati on. 5. Reprint the photo. 6. If colors continu e to appear tinte d or incorrect, open the Printer Properties dialog box, click the Color tab, and then click the Advanced Color Settings button.
Verify that the phot o paper is not curled. If the photo pape r is curled, place the pa per in a plastic bag and ge ntly bend it in th e opposite direct ion of the curl u ntil the pape r lies flat. If the pr oblem persists, then u se photo paper t hat is not curled.
