1-2 Operating Requirements Operating Requirement s Choose a location for the printer before you unpack it. Keep the following requirement s in mind: Electrical • Use the supplied power cord.
Operating Requirements 1-3 Environment al • Make sure the room is well ventilated, with a temp erature and relative humidity within specifications (see “S pecifica- tions” on page A-2). O ptimal print ing occurs within these ranges. • The high power UV light emitted by the cur ing lamps react s with oxygen and p roduces ozone.

2-2 Configure Printing Configure Printing The printer can print in several dif ferent modes fo r the combina- tion of quality , resolut i on, an d sp ee d th at you re qu ire . “Jet replacement” is the printer ’ s ability to locate and replace ink- jets that are clo gg ed or misfiring in High Quality and Production modes.
Configure Printing 2-3 The printer can print in both d irections (bidirectional) or in one direction only (unidire ctional). Unidir ectional print ing can occur in either direction. Printing occurs at about half th e speed of the corres ponding bidi rectio n al pr int mod e.
2-4 Configure Printing The following ta ble shows the print mode and reso lution combinations supported b y each of these modes: BB=Billboard; PQ=Production Q uality; HQ=High Quality The Unsupported Setup Jo b Handling menu app ears. 5. Select an option.
Configure Printing 2-5 • If the media is wrinkling or wa rping from the heat of the lamps, lower the setting. When you select a lamp setting, the shutter aperture scree n appears. 8. Adjust the shutter aper tures, or press Press ! (Proceed) to continue.
2-6 Configure Media Configure Media Before the printer will accept a print job, it must be configured for a specific media type. The cu rren tly-configu red media type, if any , is displayed in the upper left corner o f the control panel.
Configure Media 2-7 • If you pressed a media name, a list of settings appe ars (see Fig. 2-1). From this scree n you can change the Media Settings, chan ge the Print Mode, Select Media again, or Pr oceed to lo ading the m edia.
2-8 Configure Media Observe the media as the fan speed ch anges. If the media is lif ting of f the platen, increase the fan speed. If the media adva nc e se em s imp e de d by the va cu um , decrease the fan spee d. After you save your change s by pressing the ! (Pro- ceed) key , the Leading Edge S t atic Control screen appears.

At this point you can also ad just the speed of the vacu um fans, or switch them on or of f. If the sheet is warped or not being held do wn, increase the vacuu m fans or rais e the pinch rollers.

Insert the end of the spool with the pin into the left spool holder , then insert the other end of the sp ool into the right spool holde r . 4. Unspool enough media to reach p ast the pinch rollers, and smooth out the media across the pl aten.

Loading Ink 2-19 Loading Ink The amount of ink in the ink supply box is tracked by the printer software and recor ded on its corres ponding prof iler . The control panel displays a ba r graph with the ink levels in each ink box. When the control p a nel sh ows th at the ink is low , replace the ink box with a full ink box of the same color .

Printing T ips 2-21 Printing Tip s • Rigid cut-sheet media — use only flat, unwarp ed, undam- aged sheet s, with paralle l opposite edges and 90 ° corners. Load the media fro m the back of th e printer ; loading fro m the front will cause interf erence w ith the UV blocking brus hes.
2-22 Printing Ti ps Calibrating the Moveable Fence The moveable fence is calibrated at the factory to be parallel to the top surfac e of the media , at a height just above the top of the table rollers (lower than the th ickest media that will be used on the printer).
Printing T ips 2-23 4. Using a 5 mm hex wren ch, loosen the two set screws (shown below) that secure the vertical position of the move- able fence. 5. Place a long, flat, thin metal ruler on top of one colum n of table rollers. 6. Place the mo veable fenc e arm on top of the metal ruler .
2-24 Checking Jet Health Checking Jet Health Under most conditions, AutoJet jet substitution and the printer’s automated printhead ser vice station keeps the printhe ads clean and operating without your inter vention.
Checking Jet Health 2-25 Map Out Missing Jet s If the Prime Bars reveal blank lines after a Purge, the corr e- sponding jet s should be mappe d out. When all missing jets have been substituted, pr inted output will appear as if all jets are working. Y ou can map jet s out temporar ily (“sof t bad jet s”) o r permanently (“hard bad jet s”).

3-2 Overview Overview The touch-screen co ntrol panel shows you th e printer ’s current status, and enables you to interact with the printer when chang- ing media and ink, respond to an er ror condition, or configure options.
Front Page 3-3 Front Page The Front Page is the primary contro l panel interface. Y ou can initiate the most common ope rations from this scr ee n. 1. Media information — me dia n ame, size , print area, print ab le length. Press he re to display the Media Wizard.
3-4 Front Page • Job T racking Log — list of the last ten print jobs , with diagnostic information. • Media T racking Log — the amount of sheet fed and roll fed media printed si nce the reset button on this screen was pressed. 3. Ink levels — numeric and graphic ink levels; line marks “low ink” level.

3-8 Menus • Manual Calibratio ns — allows you to calibrate the print er visually , without the pr inter ’s digit al imaging sensor . Inaccu- rate judgment s by the operator during these test s could result in substan dard output. See “Manual Calibr ations” on page 4-8 fo r instructions.
Menus 3-9 MEDIA WIZARD • Printing Delay — slows throughput (media advance speed) to allow the me dia to cool b etween passes, pr eventing war p- ing of rigid media or curling of roll-fed media.
3-10 Menus • T railing Margin — defines the margins on the trailing edge of cut-shee t me dia , be twe e n 6. 0 and 24 .0 inch es (15.3 to 61.0 cm). Tip Y ou can position an image anywhere on the media by setting the right margin (horizont al or x distance from the right edge ) and leading margin (vertical or y distance from the leading edge).

AutoJet 4-3 AutoJet AutoJet detects individ ual inkjets that are misfiring or not firing at all. During subsequent printing , the printer compensates for these jets by using other jets in their place, ensuring maximum print quality without r educing print speed.
4-4 AutoT une AutoT une AutoT une runs AutoJet mainten ance a utomatically at intervals you specify . Y ou can us e the Qu ality Check Mo de feature to handle AutoJet errors (with or without user inter vention). Auto- T une is shown on the menu only when roll-fed me dia is loaded.
AutoT une 4-5 • Attended Mode — user must press ! (Proceed ) to acknowledge the error an d print the job (if one is pend- ing), or (Cancel) to cancel printing.
4-6 Auto Calibrations Auto Calibrations The printer’s piezo printheads are aligned at th e factory . Head and bidirectional calibrations shou ld be necessary only rarely (for example, when the heads have been mo ved within the car- riage or r eplaced).

4-8 Manual Calibrations Manual Calibrations When you run the calibrations from this menu , you evaluate the calibration t est patterns visually and enter the calibration values via the control panel.
Manual Calibrations 4-9 Media Feed Calibration This calibration allows you to ca librat e the accuracy of the med ia advance. Inaccurate media advance can result in blank spaces between print swaths (too mu ch advance ) or overlapping swaths (too little advance).
4-10 Manual Calibrations sure and adjust the media advance as neede d until the pat- tern is exactly 34 inch es (9 0 0 mm) lon g . 10-inch (250 mm) calibration — prints a 10-inch (or 250 mm) test pattern so you can verify its length with a n accurate metal ruler .
Manual Calibrations 4-1 1 Ti p T o avoid cutt ing the 10- inch (250 mm) pattern f rom the media web, copy the mar ks from the print ed pat- tern to the long edge of a letter-size ( or A4) she et of paper . Then measure the transferred m arks and adjust the media advance as neede d until the marks are exact ly 10 inches (250 mm ) apart.
4-12 Manual Calibrations Manual BiDi Registration Bidirectional registration is a method to align each of the print- heads so that d ot pla cemen t is ac curate in both d ire ctions alo ng the X axis (along the direc tio n of printhead trave l). The bidirectional registration p atter n consist s of a series of verti- cal lines.
Manual Calibrations 4-13 Use a printer ’s loupe to select the pattern, since the lines in the patterns may be di fficult to see. 5. Press the , or ) control panel keys repeatedly until the number next to the p attern that is closest to aligned pe rfectly is displayed.

Manual Calibrations 4-15 Manual X Head Registration Precise positioning of each drop of ink is essential for optimal print quality . This is possible only if you register all printheads in the printhead assembly to each other in the X (along the length of the platen) direction.

4-18 Manual Calibrations Manual Jet Mapping Jets that are missing or misfiring are usually detecte d by the AutoJet calibration. Alternatively , you can map out je t s manually using the Manual Jet Mapping functio n. Y ou may want to manu- ally map weak or misdirected je t s that AutoJet does not substi- tute.

4-20 Manual Calibrations • Report individual hard bad jet s — enables you to report a “hard” bad jet, which will not be checked or reen- abled by AutoJet. • View c urrent bad jet s — lists the bad jets on a given printhead. • Clear individual bad jet s — enables you to clear (mark as good) a jet.

4-24 Linearization Linearization As the density of an image var ies from h ighlight s to shadows, or from lighter tint s to darker tints, the pr inter should accurately reproduce these areas in a predictable, or linear , fashion.
Service Calibrations 4-25 Service Calibrations This section shows you how to perform the following service calibrations. For best results, yo u should perform all thre e ca li- brations in this order: • Head Height • Media Thickness Sensor • Service S tation Calibrating the Head Height 1.
4-26 Service Calibrations 4. Press the m iddle butt on (indicate d by the te xt “Both Ends ”) to lower the rail just until the gaug e cannot be pulled out. 5. Press the Lef t End “slow” or “fast” Up button to lower the rail until the gauge can move in and out with slight friction between the car riage and platen.
Service Calibrations 4-27 The control p anel asks whether to acce pt the current head heights. 12. Press " to save the cal ibration. The control p anel prompts you to re move the head height gauge and ensure that the pl aten is cle ar of all obstructions.
4-28 Service Calibrations Calibrating the Media Thickness Sensor 1. V e rify the carriage hea d height and calibra te the head height if needed. 2. From the Front Page, select Calibrations > Service Cali- brations > Media Thickness Sensor Calibration.
Service Calibrations 4-29 7. T urn the sensor clockwise o ne-half turn to achieve a smaller range reading, or co unterclockwise to achieve a larger sen- sor range reading. 8. T ighten the two nuts that secure the media thickness sensor . 9. Press ! (Proceed) to run the sensor ’s height test again (see step 2 on page 4-28 for instructio ns) .
4-30 Service Calibrations Calibrating the Service St ation 1. From the Front Page, select Calibrations > Service Cali- brations > Service S t ation Calibration. • If you alrea dy entered t his calibrati on from the previous calibration, skip this step and go to the next step.
Service Calibrations 4-31 4. Press the Carriage L eft and Right keys to center the car- riage over the wiper s. 5. Press Service S tation Up and Down keys to lower the ser- vice station so that the wipers are tou ching and slightly deflecting against the printheads.
4-32 Service Calibrations 7. When you are finished calibrating the service station posi- tion, press ! (Proce ed). The control panel asks whether to accept the current align- ment.
