Chapter 1 Introduction W elcome to t he professional color printer from Kyo cera Mita. Using the Ecosys Col or Printer , you can now pri nt top quality docum ents at 30 pages per minute for monochrome and 8 pages per minute for color in A4, Letter, and A5 paper sizes.
1.1 Features 1-2 1.1 Features This section outlines t he common major printe r features of the FS-8000C, FS-8000CD, and the FS-8000CN Ecosys Color printers. 1.1.1 General Components with an ul tra-long product life The main printer components su ch as the imaging drum, development units, and fuser unit have an ultra-long product life.
1.1 Features 1-3 T wo expansion slots for hardwa re interfaces The printer is equipped with two expansion slots for plugging in opti onal network interface cards and a hard disk. The expansion slot fo r network interface cards accommodates two cards at the same time.
1.1 Features 1-4 KPDL3 (Kyocera Printer Desc ription Language 3) The printer uses KPDL3, Ky ocera’ s implementation of the PostScript page descri ption language Level 3. The printer has 136 fonts that are compatible with Adobe Po stScript fonts. (The printer also has 80 PCL fonts.
1.2 Parts and Functio ns 1-5 1.2 Parts and Functions This section provides explanations and il lustrations for you to determine the parts and their functions. T ry to be familiar with the names and fun ctions of these parts for correct use and optimal performance.
1.2 Parts and Functio ns 1-6 6 MP (Multi-Purpose) Tr ay The MP tray holds up to 150 sheets of standard and non-standard sizes. T ransparencies, envelopes, etc. must be fed using this tray . Figure 1-2 7 Paper Stopper This stopper , when flipped up, prevent s the printed sheet of large size from falling.
1.2 Parts and Functio ns 1-7 1.2.2 Internal Figure 1-3 1 Black T oner Container This container holds black (K) toner . Y ou mu st replace the container when the toner run out. 2 Main Charg er Unit This is an electrical component used to tran sfer the toner onto the drum uni t.
1.2 Parts and Functio ns 1-8 8F u s e r U n i t The fuser unit fixes the toner permanently on the pap er . The fuser becomes very hot during printing. 9 Pa per Feed Unit The paper feed unit transports paper from the paper source fo r developing and fixing images.
1.2 Parts and Functio ns 1-9 4 Serial Interface Con nector This connector is for D-sub 25-pin RS-232C cable from the computer . Connect this connector to the computer ’ s serial printer port with a serial cable. 5 Memory Card Slo t This slot receives a memory card.
1.3 Clearance 1-10 1.3 Clearance Allow the following clearance on all sides of the printer . Caution Prolonged use without suff icient clearance may cause heat to build up with in the printer , resulting in fire.
Chapter 2 Handling P aper The printer can use a variety of media in variou s sizes. However, any media you will choose to use with the printer must be in ac cordance w ith the guid elines and specifications in this chapter .
2.1 General 2-2 2.1 General The Ecosys Color FS-8000 C Series printers are designed for high-g rade bond (copy) paper, like those widely used for ordinary xerographic copiers. The printers wi ll also support other types of paper as long as they meet the standards explained in this chapter .
2.1 General 2-3 2.1.3 Minimum and Maximum Paper Sizes The minimum and maximum paper sizes are as fo llows. For non standard paper such as cut- sheet, the MP (multi-purpose) tray must be used. Figure 2-1 2.1.4 Recommended Paper The following products are reco mmended for us e with the printer for optimum performance.
2.2 Selecting the Righ t Paper 2-4 2.2 Selecting the Right Paper T o get clean, crisp printou ts from laser printers all the time, select high-qualit y printer paper that meets the printer ’ s requirements. Laser prin ters use laser beams, el ectrostatic discharge, toner , and heat, all of which af fect the paper .
2.2 Selecting the Right Paper 2-5 2.2.2 Paper properties Smoothness Paper should have a smooth, uncoated surface. Paper with a rough or sandy surface can cause gaps in printouts. However , paper with surfaces that are too smooth ma y cause multiple-she et feeding and fogging problems (fogging is a gray background effect).
2.2 Selecting the Righ t Paper 2-6 sheet feed, or too light printing prob lems, the paper may be too thin. If you enco unter paper jam or too heavy printing problems, the pa per may be too thick. The recommende d thickness of a sheet for this printer is between 0.
2.2 Selecting the Right Paper 2-7 2.2.3 Other properties of paper Porosity The density of paper st ructure, which indicates the compactness of the fiber b onding. It is also the characteristic that allo ws air to pass through paper (i.e., air permeability ).
2.3 Special Paper 2-8 2.3 Special Paper Besides plain paper , this printer can use the follow ing types of special paper: • T ransparencies • Pre-printed • Labels •B o n d • Recycled • V e.
2.3 Special Paper 2-9 T ransp arency T ransparencies for overhead pr ojectors m ust withstand the heat of fusing during the printing process. The recommended transpar ency product is as follows: 3M CG3700 (Letter, A4) T ransparencies must be placed on the MP (multi -purpose) tray with the lon g edge towards the printer .
2.3 Special Paper 2-10 When selecting labels, make sure to use only those meeting th e following requirements: Envelopes Envelopes must be fed manually . Since the composition of an envelope is more compl ex than that of ordinary paper , it is not always possible to ensure consistent prin ting quality over the entire envelope surface.
