1 USB port Power button and light Use the Power button to turn the printer on a nd off. It can take a few seconds fo r the printer to turn on after you press th e Power button. 1 Power button and light The Power light flashes w hen the printer is proce ssing.
Unfold the paper tray To unfold the paper tra y 1. Raise the printer cover. 2. Lower the paper tray. 3. Fold out the tra y extension. 4. Lower the printer cover.
Use the p aper tray Print on different sizes of media by sliding the pa per guide to the right or to the left. The printer deposits pri nted pages on the top of th e paper tray.
You can find the selecti on number in three places: • Selection numbe r label: Look at the lab el on the print cartri dge that you are re placing. 1 Selection number label • Printer documentat ion: For a list of pr int cartridge selectio n numbers, see the reference guide that came with the printer.
To remove plastic tape from a p rint cartridge ▲ Hold the print cartri dge so that the copp er strips are on the bottom and facing toward the printer, and the n carefully remove the plastic tape . 1 Remove plastic tape CAUTION: Do not touch the print cartridge in k nozzles or copper contacts.
4 Connect the printer • USB USB The printer connect s to the computer with a univer sal serial bus (USB) cable. NOTE: For best printing perf ormance, use a USB 2.0 compatible cab le. For instructions ab out connecting the prin ter with a USB cable, see the Setup G uide that came with the printe r.
5 Print photos The printer software o ffers several features that make printing digital phot os easier and improve phot o quality. Learn ho w to print ph otos Print borderless photos .
3. Place the phot o paper in the right side of the tray. The side t o be printed on shou ld face down and the sho rt edge should point tow ards the printer. If you are using photo paper that has a tear-off tab , verify that the tab is pointing away from the pri nter.
5. If necessary, change the HP Real Lif e Technologies ph oto fix setting. 6. Select any other print set tings that you want, and then click OK . If you printed on photo paper wit h a tear-off tab, remove the ta b to make the document completely borderless.
4. Push the paper into the printer until it stops. 5. Slide the paper gu ide firmly against the edge of the paper. 1 Small photos 2 Large photos Print NOTE: If your softw are program includes a phot o printing feature, follow the instructions that ar e provided with the software program.
HP Real Life Technologies photo fix HP Real Lif e Technologies enhance the quality of your printed pho tos. In most cases, you do not need t o change the Basic default print setting. The Basi c setting sharpens the im ages that you print, and i mproves the quality an d clarity of lo w resolution images, such as tho se downloaded from th e Internet.
5. In the Print Quality drop-down list, click Normal or Best . NOTE: For maximum dpi quality, go to the Advanced tab, and then select Enabled from the Maximum dpi drop-down list. For more informatio n, see Maximu m dpi . 6. Select any other print sett ings that you want, and th en click OK .

Print labels Guidelines • Use only paper, plastic, or clear labels that are desig ned specifically for inkjet printers. • Use only full sh eets of labels. • Avoid using labels that ar e sticky, wrinkled, or pullin g away from the protective backing.
Print transparencies Guidelin es • For great results, use H P Premium Inkjet Transparency Film. • Do not exceed the paper tray capacity: 20 transparenci es. Prepare to print 1. Slide the paper guide all the way to the left. 2. Place the tra nsparencies in the right side of the tray.
3. Push the pa per into the pri nter until it stops. 4. Slide the paper guide firmly against the edge of the paper. Print 1. Open the Printer Properties dialog bo x . 2. Click the Features tab. 3. Specify the fo llowing print setti ngs: • Print Quality : Best • Paper Type : Click More , and then select an a ppropriate HP i nkjet paper.
4. Push the cards in to the printer unti l they stop. 5. Slide the paper gu ide firmly against the edg e of the cards. Print NOTE: If your software program includes a greeting card printing feature, f ollow the instructions that ar e provided with the software program.
Prepare to print 1. Slide the paper g uide all the way to t he left. 2. Place plain paper i n the right side of the tr ay. The side to be printed on sh ould face down. 3. Push the pa per into the pri nter until it stops. 4. Slide the paper guide firmly against the edge of the paper.
Print posters Guidelin es • For poster print ing, sections of the po ster are automatical ly arranged on indivi dual sheets that can be t aped together. After th e sections of a poster have bee n printed, trim the edges of the sheets and tape the sheets to gether.
6. Check that the number of t iles that are selected matc hes the number of sheets for the poster, and th en click OK . 7. Select any other print set tings that you want, and then click OK . Use the What's This? he lp to learn about the f eatures that appea r in the Printer Propertie s dialog box.

NOTE: When you select a p rinting shortcut the ap propriate printing opti ons are automatically displayed . You can leave them as is or chang e them. Use printing sho rtcuts Use the Printing Sh ortcut.
NOTE: Only the shortcut s that you have created can be deleted. The original HP shortcuts cannot be deleted. Set the page order The page order dete rmines the order in which your m ultipage document s print. To set the page order 1. Open the Printer Properties dialog bo x .
Print multiple pages on a single sheet of paper You can print up t o 16 pages on a single sheet of paper. To print multiple pages on a sing le sheet of paper 1. Open the Printer Properties di alog box . 2. Click the Features tab. 3. In the Pages Per Sheet drop-down list, select the number of page s that you want to appear on each sh eet of paper.
Two-sided printing Use two-sided print ing, also called duplexing, to print on both sides of the paper. Printing on both sides of th e paper is not only econom ical, but environment ally conscious as well . To print a two-s ided document 1. Open the Printer Properties dialog bo x .
4. Select any other print sett ings that you want, and th en click OK . Before the documen t prints, a preview is displayed. 5. Do one of t he following: • Click OK to print the docume nt. • Click Cancel to cancel the print job. Adjust the print se ttings as need ed before printing the docu ment.
Print quality settings • Fast Draft produc es draft-quality output a t the fastest printi ng speed, while using the least amount of i nk. • Normal provides the best balance betwe en print quality an d speed and is appropriat e for most documents.
3. In the Printer Features area, select En abled from t he Maximum dpi drop -down list. NOTE: To disable maxi mum dpi mode, select Disabled from the drop-d own list. 4. Click the Features tab. 5. In the Pape r Type drop-down list, click More , and then select t he appropriate pap er type.
4. Select the foll ow ing check boxes: • Flip Pages Up • Preserve L ayout 5. Select any other print set tings that you want, and then click OK . The printer prints the odd-numbered pages first.
3. Make sure the product is the selected printer. 4. If your Web browser support s it, select the items on t he Web page that you wa nt to include in t he printout. For example, in Internet Explorer, click the Options tab to se lect option s such as As laid out o n screen , Only the selec ted frame , and Print all linked documents .
8 Printer software • Make the HP Deskj et the default printer . • Set the def ault print set tings for all document s. •U s e t h e Printer Properties dialog box to sel ect printing options. •U s e t h e What's This? help to learn more about sp ecific print setti ngs.
To save time when printing , set the default print set tings to options that you use oft en. That way, you do not have t o specify the options every time you use t he printer. To change th e default pri nt settings 1. Double-click the HP Dig ital Imaging Monitor ico n on the right side of the Windows taskbar.
NOTE: The path to the Printer Properties dialog bo x can vary depending on the software progr am you are using. What's This? help Use the What's This ? help to learn about the features t hat you see on the Printer Properties dialog box.

4. Slide the print ca rtridge out of the ca rriage. 1 Press the Power button 2 Open the printer cover 3 Push down on the print ca rtridge 4 Slide the print cartridge out of the carriage 5. Remove the replacement print cartri dge from its packaging and caref ully remove the plastic tape.
1 Ink nozzles 2 Copper contacts 6. Slide the print cartri dge firmly into the carriage at a slight upward angl e until you feel resistance. 7. Push the cartridge into the carriage. You hear a snap when the print cartridge is correctly positioned. 8. Close the prin ter cover.
3. Click Align the Print Cartridges . 4. Click Align , and th en follow the onscreen i nstructions. The HP Deskjet pri nts a test page, aligns t he print cartridges, and calibrates the printer.
Maintain the printer body Because the HP Deskjet eject s ink onto the paper in a fine mist, ink smudges will eventually appear. To remove smudges, stai ns, or dried ink from the exterior 1. Turn off the HP Deskjet, and then disconnect the powe r cord.
To prepare to clean 1. Open the HP Deskjet cover. 2. Wait until the p rint cartridge carriage moves to the center of the HP Deskj et and is idle and qu iet. 3. Remove the print cartridg es and place them on a piece of paper, with the copper strips facing up.
• When you remove a print cartridge from the printer, sto re it in an airtight plast ic container to prote ct your print cartridge and to prevent the ink from dryi ng out. • Keep all unused print cartridges in their origina l sealed packages until they a re needed.
10 Shop for ink supplies To find the print cartridg e reorder number, see the printe d documentation that came w ith the HP Deskjet . You can also use the software that came with the HP Deskjet t o find out the reorder number for the prin t cartridge.

To resolve the problem, follow the instructio ns in Resolving print cartridge error messages . Print cartridge p roblem message The printer cannot print if the print cartridges are faulty, or if they are not installed p roperly.
Solution 1: Make sur e you are using the co rrect print cartridges Solution: Check to make sure you are using th e correct print ca rtridges for your product. For a list of compatible print cartridges, see the printed document ation that came with the product .
NOTE: HP cannot guaran tee the qualit y or reliability of n on-HP supplies. Printer service or repairs required as a resul t of using a non-HP sup ply will not be cove red under warranty. If you believe you purchased genuine HP pri nt cartridges, go to: www.
removed from each print cartridge. When plastic tape covers the print cartri dge contacts, the print er cannot detect that the print cartridge is installed.
6. Click Cancel on the Print dialog box. 7. Print the envelope using the Envelopes and L abels feature in Micro soft Word. The envelope should prin t without any errors. NOTE: When you are finish ed printing envelopes, se t the paper size back to the default print se ttings.
Solution: To resolve the pr oblem 1. Make sure that no USB devices ot her than the printer, the ke yboard, and the mouse are connect ed to the computer . 2. Disconnect and reconne ct the USB cable. 3. Make sure that the printer i s connected directly to a USB po rt on the computer (instead of through a U SB hub).
Printer name doe s not appear Solution: If the pri nter software seems to inst all correctly, bu t the printer name does not appear in the l ist of printers when you click Print on the File menu or in the Printers folder in Control Panel, try reinstalling the printer software .
What the flashing light means The Power light can flash for several reasons: • The printer cover is open. • The printer is out of pa per. • A problem exists with t he printer, such as a paper jam or a pro blem with a print cartridge. For information a bout clearing a paper jam, see Paper jam .
Unable to print Try the following solu tions: • Solution 1: Make sure th e printer is turned on • Solution 2: Print a test page • Solution 3: Cl ear the print queue • Solution 4: C heck the pr.
Solution 3: Clear the print queue Solution: Restart your computer to clear the print queue. To clear the print qu eue 1. Restart your computer. 2. After the comput er has restarted, check t he print queue.
Solution 5: Verify th e printer driver config uration Solution: Check to ma ke sure the product is set as the default p rinter and that it i s using the correct prin ter driver.
Solution 6: Check if th e printer is p aused or offl ine Solution: Check to make su re the produ ct is not paus ed or offline . To check if the printer is paused or offline 1.
Solution 8: Restart the pr int spooler Solution: Restart the print spooler. To stop and restart the pri nt spooler 1. Depending upon your operating system, do one of the following: • Windows XP and Window s Vista: On the Windows taskbar, cli ck Start , and then click Control Panel .
If the printer still does not print 1. Select the topic below that best describes the pro blem: • Paper jam • Out of paper • Print cartridge carri age is stalled 2. If the printer sti ll does not print, shut down, and then rest art your computer.
Resolving prin t cartridge error me ssages After you install a print cartridge, the Power light begins to blink. The printer will n ot print. One of the foll owing messages may appea r on your compute.
• Check the electrical contacts for deb ris. • Make sure all the clear nozzl e protective tape has been removed. CAUTION: Do not attempt to remove the copper electrical st rip! 5. Read the selection num ber on the print cartridge label and m ake sure it is compatible wi th your printer.
Print cartridge carriag e is stalled The print cartrid ge cradle (carri age) may get stuc k on either side or in the middle of the printer. This is called a carriage stall. Wh en this happens, the erro r message Print Cartridge C radle is Stuc k may appear.
Solution 3: Move the pr inter carriage Solution: If the printer carriage i s still stuck, try moving it as described in the following pro cedure. To move the printe r carriage 1. Press the Power button to turn off the printer, and then disconnect the po wer cord from the pr inter.
If this did not so lve the issue, try the next solution. Solution 5: Remove an d reinstall the print cartri dges Solution: Improper placemen t or installati on of the prin t cartridges can cause the printer carriage to st all. Remove and reinstall the p rint cartridges.
5. Remove the pap er jam from the back of t he printer, and then repl ace the rear access door securely. 6. If the paper jam canno t be removed from the back of t he printer, raise the pr inter cover, remove the paper jam fro m the front of the printer, and t hen lower the cover.
Solution 1: Make sure the p aper tray is not empty Solution: If the pape r tray is empty, add more paper. Cause: The paper tray was empty. Solution 2: Check th e rear door of the printer Solution: If you rem oved the rear door to clear a paper jam, replace it .
9. Slide the paper-w idth and paper-length guides inward unt il they stop at the edges of the paper. NOTE: Do not overload in the paper tray. Make sure the stack of paper fits within the pa per tray. 10. Make sure the print settings, paper size and type, m atch the paper loaded in the paper tray.
Paper type Suggested paper size setting s Letterhead Letter or A4 Panorama photo paper Appropriate listed panorama size (if listed sizes are no t appropriate, you can specify a custom paper size) Photo papers 10 x 15 cm.
To clean the roll ers 1. Turn off the pr oduct and remove the power cord. 2. Remove the rear door to access the rollers. 3. Dip the lint-free cl oth into the purified or disti lled water, and squeeze any excess water from it. 4. Clean the rubber rol lers to remove any dust or dirt bu ildup.
Paper weig ht The printer might print on multiple sheets of pa per at once if the paper is unde r the recommended pape r weight. Use paper that is within the re commended specificati ons.
• Streaks appear in a lig ht portion of a photo • Fading occurs on t he edges of a photo • Photo has an un wanted border Borderless printing guidelines When printing borderless photos or brochur.
Streaks appe ar in a light portion of a photo If streaks appear i n a light portion of a photo , approximately 63 mm (2. 5 inches) from one of the long edge s of the photo, try using maxi mum dpi mode to print the photo. For more information, see Maximum dpi .
For small photo paper If the printout has an unwanted border, try the f ollowing solution s: • Align the print cartridg es . • Open the Printer Properties dialog box , click the Features tab, and .
Print quality is poor If you are having prob lems with print quality, try the solutions in this section and observe the follow ing guidelines: • Replace refille d or empty cartridges. • Check the device set tings to make sure that the print mo de and paper selection is correct for the paper an d the task.
Wrong, inaccurate, or b leeding colors If your printout has one of the foll owing print quali ty problems, try the solu tions in this section for help. • Colors look slight ly different than what you expected. For example, the colors in your graphic or photo look one way on you r computer screen, but print out differently.

Solution 5: Check the print settings Solution: Check the print settings. • Check th e print setti ngs to see if the color setti ngs are in correct. For example, check to see if th e document is set to print in graysca le. • Check the print quali ty setting and make sure it matche s the type of paper loade d in the product.

The printout ha s a horizontal band of distortion nea r the bottom of a borderles s print Try the following solutions if your borderless pr int has a blurry band or line on t he bottom of it. NOTE: For this issue, there is not a problem with your ink supp lies.
Printouts have horizontal streaks or lines Try the following soluti ons if your printout has a lines, streaks, or marks on it that run side- to-side across the wi dth of the page.
If this did not solve the issue, try the n ext solution. Solution 5: Clean the print cartridges Solution: Check the estima ted ink levels remaining in the pri nt cartridges. NOTE: Ink level warnings and indicators provide esti mates for planning purposes only.
Always make sure the paper you are printing on is fl at. For best result s when printing images, use HP Premiu m Plus Photo Paper. For more information, see: Store and handle photo paper Cause: The wrong kind of paper w as loaded in the input tra y. If this did not so lve the issue, try the next solution.
If this did not solve the issue, try the n ext solution. Solution 2: Check the resolu tion of the image Solution: Check the resolution of the imag e. If you are printing a photo or graphic, and the resolution i s too low, it will be blurry or fu zzy when printed.
Solution 2: Make sure only one type of paper is lo aded Solution: Load only one type of paper at a time. Cause: More than one type of paper w as loaded in the input tray. If this did not so lve the issue, try the next solution. Solution 3: Check the rea r door Solution: Make sure the rear door is securely instal led.
Paper is not pi cked up from the input tray Solution: Do one of the fo llowing: • If the product is out of paper or there ar e only a few sheets remaining, load mo re paper in the input tray.
Document is printed off-c enter or at an angle 1. Verify that onl y one type of paper is placed in the paper tray, and that the paper has been placed in the tray correctly. 2. Verify that the paper guide fits firmly agai nst the edge of pape r. 3. Reprint the docume nt.
