4 Paper basics You can load many differe nt types and sizes of paper in t he HP Photosmart, including letter or A4 pa per, photo paper, tra nsparencies, and envelopes.
NOTE: At this ti me, some porti ons of the HP W eb site are a vailable in English only. Recommended papers for printing If you want the best print quality, HP recommends u sing HP papers that are specif ically designed for t he type of project you are printing.
HP Iron-On Tra nsfers HP Iron-on Transfers (for co lor fabrics or for l ight or white fabrics ) are the ideal solutio n for creating custom T-shi rts from your digital photos. HP Premium Ink jet Transpare ncy Film HP Premium Inkjet Transparency Film makes your color presen tations vivid and even more impressive.

View the print resolution The printer softw are displays the print resolution in dots per inch (dpi). The dpi varies according to the pa per type and print quality th at you select in the printer software. To view the pr int resolution 1. Make sure you ha ve paper loaded in the input tray.

To check the ink levels from the HP Photosmart Software ▲ In the HP Sol ution Center, click th e Estimated Ink Levels icon. NOTE: You can also open t he Printer Toolbox from the Print Prop erties d ialog box. In the Prin t Properties dialog box , click the Featur es tab, and th en click the Printer Services button.

This w arranty does not cover HP ink products t hat have been refilled, remanufactured, ref urbished, misused, or tampered with.
To evaluate the pr int quality report 1. Check the ink levels shown on th e page. If a cartridge shows very low ink le vels and you find the print quality unacceptabl e, consider replacing that ink cartridge. Print quality typically det eriorates as cartridges run out of ink.

CAUTION: If the product still does not turn on, it might have a mechan ical failure. Unplug the product from the power outlet. Contact HP supp ort for service . Go to: www.hp. com/support . If prompt ed, choose your country/region, and then click Contact HP for in formation on calling for techni cal support.
Cause: The product might not have been turned on. If this did not so lve the issue, try the next solution. Solution 2: Set your prod uc t as the defa ult printer Solution: Check your com puter documentation to change your p roduct to be the default printer.

Print troubleshooting Try the following sol utions to resolve the issue. Sol utions are listed in order, wi th the most likely solution first. If the first solution does not sol ve the problem, continue tryi ng the remaining solut ions until the issue is resolve d.
Check the ink leve ls Solution: Check the esti mated ink levels in the cartridges. NOTE: Ink level warnings and indicato rs provide estimates for planning purposes only. When you receive a low-ink warning message, consider having a replacement cartrid ge available to avoid possible printin g delays.
Align the printer Solution: Aligning the pri nter can help ensure excellent print quality. To align the printer fr om the HP Photosmart Software 1. Load letter , A4, or legal unused plain w hite paper into the in put tray. 2. In the HP So lution Cen ter, click Settings .
After cleaning th e printhead, print a print qu ality report. Evaluate the print quality report to see if the print quality problem still exists. For more information, see: “ Print and eval uate a print quality re port” on page 75 Cause: The printhead needed to be clea ned.
To check your marg in settings 1. Preview your print job b efore sending i t to the produc t. In most software ap plications, click the File me nu, and then click Print Preview .
Solution 1: Insert the memory card properly Solution: Turn the memory ca rd so that the label faces up a nd the contacts are facing the produ ct, and then push the card f orward into the appropriate slot until the Photo light turns on .
Solution 1: Install th e product software Solution: Install the product softw are that came with the product. If it is installed, restart your computer. To install the p roduct software 1. Insert the product CD- ROM into your computer’s CD -ROM drive and then st art the Setup program .

Solution 2: Make sure pa per is loaded correctly in the ph oto tray Solution: Make sure you have paper loaded correctly in the photo tray. For more information, see: “ Load media” on page 13 Cause: The paper was not feedi ng properly because it was loaded incorrectly.
Photo tray cannot d isengage Solution: Push the output tray al l the way down. Cause: The output tray was not lowered all the way. Missing HP Pho tosmart Software Try the following sol utions to resolve the issue. Sol utions are listed in order, wi th the most likely solution first.
Solution 4: Check the co nnection from the product to y our computer Solution: Check the conn ection from the product to your co mputer. Verify that the USB cable is securely plugged into the U SB port on the back of the product. Make sure the other end o f the USB cable is plugged into a USB port on your computer.
try printing those fil es by using the product software. The copi es might not be damaged. Cause: Some of the files on the i nserted memory card or attached stora ge device were damaged. Photos not f ound Try the following sol utions to resolve the issue.

Solution 2: Empty the Recycle Bin on your desktop Solution: Empty the Recycle Bin on your desktop . You might also need to remove files from the hard disk; for example, delet e temporary files. Cause: For scanning, there must be at least 50 MB of space available on you r computer's hard di sk.
Use only o ne card at a time Solution: You can insert only one memory card at a t ime. If more than one m emory card is inserted, the at tention light will blink rapidly, an d an error message will appear on the computer screen. Remove the additio nal memory card to resolve the pr oblem.
Paper messages The following is a list of paper-related error messages: • Ink is drying • Paper upside down • Paper orientatio n error Ink is drying Solution: Two-sid ed printing requires the print ed sheets to be dry bef ore printing on the back side.
• Ink alert • Ink cartridge probl em • Ink service capa city warning • Ink system failure • Check ink cartridges • Install printhead and th en cartridges • Non-HP cartridge • Original .
• Solution 2: Co ntact HP support Solution 1: Reset the produc t Solution: Turn off the product, and then unplug t he power cord. Plug the power cord back in, and then p ress the On button to turn on the product . Cause: The product experienced an error.
Solution 2: Contact HP s upport Solution: Contact HP support for service. Go to: www.hp. com/support . If prompted, choose your country/reg ion, and then click Contact HP for information on calling for techni cal support. Cause: The ink ca rtridges were not intended for use i n this product.
• Solution 5: Co ntact HP support Solution 1: Insta ll the ink cartridges correctly Solution: Make sure all of the ink cartridges ar e properly installed. Refer t o the following steps t o resolve this error. To make sure the ink cartridges are properl y installed 1.
5. Press down on any cartridges that a re sticking up. They shou ld snap down into place. 6. If an ink cartridge was sti cking up and you were able to sna p it back down into place, close the ink ca rtridge access door and check if the error message has gone away.
12. Close the ink cartri dge access door, and check if the error message has gone away. 13. If you still rece ive the error message, turn the pro duct off, and then on a gain. Cause: The indicated ink cartridges were not instal led correctly. If this did not so lve the issue, try the next solution.
Solution 3: Clean the el ectrical contacts Solution: Clean the ca rtridge electrical cont acts. To clean the electrical cont acts 1. Make sure th e product is turned on. 2.
