1 HP Scanjet 8300 series User Guide This user guide cove rs what you need t o know about using the HP Scanjet 8300 series scanner. Scanner hardware ● Automatic docum ent feeder (ADF) ● Transparent.

Program Purpose Supported OS includes photo sharing , projects, and backup features. 2 How to use the scanner buttons Use the buttons on the sca nner front panel to start a scan, select a destinati on for a scan, and configure some scanne r settings.
Macintosh Macintosh users can confi gure the customizable buttons on the HP Scanjet Scanner pane within System Prefe rences. With the exception of Make Copies, the custo mizable buttons operate w ith HP Scan Pro.

Copy buttons Use the Copy button ( ) to scan an original a nd send it to the default printer of th e computer. Use the Number of Copies button ( ) to specify the number of copie s that you want.

Note There is a power switch on the back of the scanner. Use the power swi tch if you need to turn the scanner comple tely off. During normal scanner us e, leave th e power switch in the On position and use t he Power Save button to put the scanner into power-save mode.
3 How to start a scan Start a scan in o ne of the followin g ways: ● Scan from the scanne r front panel buttons ● Scan from the HP scann ing software (Windows) ● Scan from the HP scann ing softw.
– On the taskbar, click Start , point to Programs or All Pro grams , p oint to HP , and then click HP Solution Center . 2. If you have installed m ore than one HP device, click the tab for th e scanner. 3. Click Scan Picture , Scan Docu ment , Scan Film or Make Copies , and then follow the onscreen instructions to comple te the scan .
Scan from HP Photosmart Studio 1. Click the HP Ph otosmart Studio icon in the Dock. 2. Browse to the folder wher e you want the scan to be sent. 3. In the toolbar, cli ck the Scan button.
4 How to scan documents The options availabl e for scanning documents vary a ccording to the software i nstalled on the computer and the computer operating system.
2. Adjust the paper guide s to center the stack. Pull out the inp ut tray extension for longer paper sizes. Scan one-si ded docu ments fro m the AD F 1.

5 How to scan pictures and film The section explai ns how scan pictures and film. ● Scan pictures ● Scan film Scan pictures HP recommends that Windows users use HP Photo smart Software to scan pictures. HP Photosmart Software provi des higher scan resolution and b etter color management for pictures than HP Smart D ocument Scan Software.
Arrange the pictures th at you want to scan on the HP scanning de vice glass. For the best results, leave at least 6 mm (0 .25 inches) of space between the edg es of the pictures. Then follow the st eps for scanning a picture. For more informa tion, see Scan a picture .
3. Remove the TMA cover by grippi ng one of the tabs on the cover and t hen pulling the cover toward you. 4. Place positives in t he appropriate template, usi ng the icons on the template t o guide your film placement. – Place slides in the slide tem plate.
7. Close the scanner lid. 8. Do one of the fo llowing: Windows Do one of the fo llowing: – From HP Solution Center, click Scan Fi lm . – Press customizable button 1 . Macintosh From the HP Device Manager, click Scan Film . 9. Follow the onscre en instructions to complete the scan.
2. Remove the film templates from the scanner storag e slot. Select the negat ive scanning templa te. 3. Remove the TMA cover by grippi ng one of the tabs on the cover and t hen pulling the cover toward you. 4. Place the negat ives into the appropriate temp late using the icons on th e template to guide your fi lm placement.
Note Use the negati ve light shield to cover the remain ing area in the negative holder if you are scanning fewer than the maximum number o f negative frames with the TMA. This ensu res that no extra light leaks into the scan. 5. Snap shut any open doors on the template.
11. Place the film temp lates in the scanner storage slot. Note The template s can be placed in the storage i n any order. The HP icon on each template should face up.
6 Other scanning functions You can use the scanner to do the following tasks: ● Make copies ● Scan to a destinat ion ● Save a document or image to a drive or CD ● Send a scan to an e-mail prog ram Make copies Use the Copy button ( ) to scan a n origin al and send it to a printer .
2. Select the copy options: – Select the numb er of copies by pressing the Numbe r of Copies button ( ). The number of copies is displ ayed on the scanner LCD panel. – Select how the origi nal is scanned by pressing the Color button ( ) or Black & White button ( ).
Scan to a destination 1. Do one of the fo llowing: – Place the original face do wn on the scanner glass, as indicated by the referen ce mark. – Load the originals in th e automatic document feeder (ADF ). For more information, see Load originals in the ADF .
Press the Select Destinatio n button until the destination you want is displaye d on the scanner LCD pane l, and then press the Scan Document To butt on. Save a document or im age to a drive or CD 1. Do one of the fo llowing: – Place the original face do wn on the scanner glass, as indicated by the referen ce mark.

7 Change scan settings You can change many scan sett ings from the HP scanning software, including: ● Scan resolution ● Color managemen t ● Scan source ● Output type Windows Program Procedure .
8 Configure the scanner customizable buttons The information in this chapter pertains to Window s users only. Note Macintosh users can ch ange the scan settings, such as scan resolution and color management , for these buttons. For more information, see Change scan settings .

9 Care and maintenance This section presents informat ion about how to care for and m aintain the scanner. ● Order maintenance an d scanning supplies ● Clean the scanner glass ● Clean the transp.
Clean the transparent ma terials adapter (TMA) Clean the TMA with a d ry, soft cloth. If necessary, lightl y spray the cloth with a mi ld glass cleaner and wipe the TMA. Clean and maintain the auto matic document feeder (ADF) The ADF requires peri odic cleaning depending on t he amount of use and the type of paper that is fed through it.
2. Locate the ADF access doo r on the underside of the ADF. 3. Press the tabs on the door, and t hen pull the door toward you u ntil it detaches from the ADF. 4. Locate the clear sca n window inside the ADF and clean it with the AD F cleaning cloth. 5.
8. Close the scanner lid. 9. Use th e ADF to sc an up to five docume nts. View the re sults. If strea ks still exist on the scanned images, call HP Customer Support. Clean the feed-roller a ssembly manually 1. Open the ADF lid. 2. Lift the gre en lever to rai se the feed-ro ller assembly to the vertical posi tion.
4. Wipe the area ar ound the small rubber pad to remove any paper dust. 5. Lower the green tab and feed-roller assembly. 6. Close the ADF top l id. Maintain the ADF If misfeeds occur freque ntly, clean the feed-roller assemb ly manually. For more information, see Clea n and maintain the au tomatic document fee der (ADF) .
10 Troubleshooting This section contai ns solutions for common problems with the sca nner, transparent materials adapter (TMA), a nd automatic document feeder (ADF).
Reinstall using the HP software CD that came with yo ur scanner. When you insert the CD, an installation dialog box l aunches automatically. Check the cables Cable type Action Power cable The power cable is connected between the scanner and a p ower outlet.
Scanner will not turn on If the scanner will not t urn on when you press the fron t panel scanner buttons, verify the following: ● The scanner power swit ch might be turned off. Be sure the power switch locate d on the back of the scanner is t urned ON.
The image is complete ly black or completely white The item might not be placed correctly on the scanner glass. Make sure tha t the item you are trying to scan is placed face d own on the glass and the lid is closed. If scannin g from the ADF, check the pap er orientation.
Buttons do not wo rk After each step, star t a scan to see if the buttons are working. I f the problem continues, proceed with the next step. ● A cable might be loos e. Ensure that the USB cable, the accessory cab le, and the power cable are se curely connecte d.
3. Click the icon for the HP Scanjet 8300 series scan ner. 4. On the menu bar, click File , and then click Properties . The scanner propert ies dialog box is displa yed. 5. Click the Events tab. 6. From the Sel ect an event drop-down list, click th e button you want to configure.
Incorrect colors p rint, or th e image is too light or dark ● The software might be setti ng the ex posure for th e entire are a instead of for o ne slide or negative. Select and drag the handle s around the selection area until you see the image area you w ant to scan.
● An item loaded in the ADF jams repeatedly ● Clear jams from the ADF ● Replace the feed-roller assem bly Paper jamming, sk ewing, misfeeds, or multiple-pag e feeds ● If the pages look skewed as they feed into the automatic do cument feeder, check the resulting sca nned images in the softw are to ensure that they are not skewed.
4. Clean the feed-roller assem bly manually. For more inform ation, see Clean the f eed- roller assemb ly manually . 5. Clean the ADF windo w. For more information, see Clean the ADF window . An item loaded in the ADF jams repeatedly ● The item does no t meet the guidelines for t he ADF.
5. Put the input tray on th e ADF. Reload the unscanned p ages in the ADF input tray. 6. Resume scanning. Clear a jam at the end of the pape r path 1. Remove an y loose page s from the ADF inpu t tray. 2. Gently pull the jamm ed page out of the ADF in the opposite direct ion from which the page fed into the ADF.
6. Resume scanning. Remove a paper jam within the ADF 1. Remove an y loose page s from the ADF inpu t tray. 2. Open the scanner l id. 3. Locate the ADF access doo r on the underside of the ADF. 4. Press the tabs on the door, and t hen pull the door toward you u ntil it detaches from the ADF.
Replace the fee d-roller assembly You can find the feed-rolle r assembly under the ADF lid. HP recommends tha t you replace the feed-roller assembly every 1 00,000 scans. Use the HP Button Se ttings Utility to keep track of the ADF scan count. For more in formation, see General info ta b .
A Scanner error messages The scanner LCD panel displays error messages under certain error conditions. For help responding to an error message, see the appro priate topic: ● Error 01 ● Error 02 .
Error 06 Check to see that the scanner lamp is turned on. If the lamp is not turned on, contact HP Support. For more information, see Contact HP Support . Error 07 Press the Power Save button to turn the scanner off, and then turn the scanner on again by pressing one of the front panel buttons.
