4. Slide the media guide in the t ray to adjust it for th e media size that you have lo aded, and then lowe r the output tray . 5. Pull out the exte nsion on the output tra y. Change print settings You can change print setti ngs (such as paper size or type) from an ap plication or the printer driver.
To change defa ult settings for all future jobs (Windows ) 1. Click Start , then click Printers or Printers and Faxes . - Or - Click Start , click Control Panel , and t hen double-click Printers . NOTE: If prompted, en ter the computer a dministrator's p assword.
To print on special or custom -sized medi a (Mac OS X) 1. Load the appropriat e media. For more inf ormation, see Load media . 2. On the File menu, click Page Setup . NOTE: Some Mac OS X 10.5 applicat ions do not have a Page Setup m enu, it is included in th e Print menu.
3. From the applicat ion, open the printer driver: a . Click File , and then click Print . b . Click Properti es, Setup , or Pr eference s . 4. Select the print set tings shortcut you w ant to use. 5. Change any other prin t settings, and the n click OK .
To print a Web page 1. Make sure that you have paper loaded in the in put tray. 2. On the File menu in your Web bro wser, click Print . TIP: For best resu lts, select HP Smart Web Printing from the File menu. A check mark appears when it is selected. The Print dialog box appears.

NOTE: For a list of system requirements for the embedded Web server, see Embedded Web serve r specificati ons . Some settings migh t be restricted by the requirement for a p assword. You can open and use t he embedded Web server w ithout being conn ected to the Internet; however, some features will not be availa ble.
You can open the embedd ed Web server by using these methods: • Web browser: In a supp orted Web browse r on your computer, type t he IP address or hostname that has bee n assigned to the device. For example, if the IP ad dress is 123.123.123.12 3, type the fol lowing address int o the Web browse r: http://123.

If you need to call HP, it i s often useful t o print the Printer Stat us page before calling. 1. Printer Information: Shows device info rmation (such as the p roduct name, mode l number, serial number, and firmware version n umber), and the num ber of pages printed from t he trays.
Understand the network configuration status r eport The network confi guration status report sho ws the network setti ngs for the devic e. 1. General Info rmation: Shows info rmation abo ut the curren.
Configure the device (Windows) You can connect the devi ce directly to a compu ter, or you can share the device among other users on a network. NOTE: Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 or hi gher must be inst alled on the co mputer system to run the installation program.
1. In the Found New Hardware dialog box that displays methods for locating the printer driver, sele ct the Advanced option, and th en click Next . NOTE: Do not allow the Found New Ha rdware wizard to perform an automatic search for the prin ter driver.
Choose the installatio n option for the type of network you have: • Client/s erver networ k: If your network has a comput er acting as a dedicated pri nt server, install the device software on the server, and then install the device software on the client computers.
Install th e printer dr iver using A dd Printer 1. Click Start , then click Printers or Printers and Faxes . - Or - Click Start , click Control Panel , and then doubl e-click Printers . 2. Double-click Add Printer , and then click Next . 3. Select Network Printer or Network Printer Server .
Basic requirement s for sharing in Mac OS X envi ronment include the following it ems: • The Macintosh computers must be communicating on the network using TCP/IP , and they must have IP addresse s. (AppleTalk is not supported.) • The device that i s being shared must be connect ed to a built-in US B port on the h ost Macintosh computer.
(and you know the HP device is on the network), o r you have already successfully installed HP soft ware and experience problems, try the following: 1. If you are using a comput er running Windows, in the firewall configurati on utility, look for an option to trust compu ters on the local subnet (sometimes called the “scope“ or “zone“).

9. After the softwa re is installed, connect t he device to your comput er. 10. Press the Power button t o turn the device on. After connecting an d turning on the device, you might have to wait several minutes for all of the Plug and Play even ts to complete.

• Turn off the HP Printer b y pressing the Power butto n located on the pro duct. Wait until the Power light turns off bef ore unplugging the powe r cord or turning off a power strip.
Replace the ink cartr idges NOTE: For information on recycling used ink supplies, see HP inkjet supplies recycling program . If you do not already have replacement ink cartridges for the HP Printer, see Order print ing supplies on line . NOTE: At this time, some portions of the HP Web site are available in En glish only.
5. Twist the oran ge cap to snap it o ff. NOTE: Make sure the plastic tab is enti rely removed and that the label is slig htly torn, revealing the vent chann el. 6. Using the colore d shaped icons for help , slide the ink cartridg e into the empty sl ot until it clicks i nto place and is se ated firmly in t he slot.
Make sure that you insert the ink cartridge into th e slot that has t he same shaped i con and color as the one you are inst alling. 7. Repeat steps 3 th rough 6 for each ink ca rtridge you are rep lacing.
If you are concerned ab out providing thi s anonymous informat ion, you can make this information inaccessi ble by turning off t he memory chip's a bility to collect t he product's usage inf.
To evaluate the Print Qu ality Diagnostic Page This section include s the follow ing topics: • Ink Levels • Good color bars • Ragged, irregularly streake d, or faded bars • Regular white stre .
▲ Look at the Ink Leve l indicators in Li ne 21. If any of the bar level indicators are low, you may need to replace th at ink cartridge. NOTE: Ink level warnings and indicato rs provide estimates for plan ning purposes only.
Example of Bad Color Bars The top black bar is ragged on one end. If any of the bars are rag ged, irregularly strea ked, or faded, foll ow these steps: 1. Make sure the ink cartridges have ink. 2. Remove the cartridge corresponding to the strea ked bar and make sure i t is properly vented.
Regular white streaks in the bars If any of the color bars show regula r white streaks, follow these steps: White streaks The print quality bars have white streaks in them. 1. If the Print Qual ity Diagnostic report reads PHA TTOE = 0 , align the printer.
Large Black Font Te xt Look at the large- font text above the color blocks. I ABCDEFG abcdefg The type should be sharp and clear. If the type is jagged, try alignin g the printer. If there are strea ks or smears of ink, clean the printhead. Example of good Large-Font Type The letters are sharp and clear - the p rinter is operating correctly.
Examples of a bad alignment pattern The lines are jagged - align the printer. If tha t does not work, contact HP. If you see no defe cts If you do not see any de fects on the print quality report, th en the printing system is working correctly.
• The device is set as the curren t or default printer. Fo r Windows, set it as t he default in the Pri nters folder . For Mac O S X, set it as th e default in the Printer Set up Utility (Mac OS X (v10.4). For Mac OS X (v10.5) open System Preferences , select Pr int & Fax , and then select the device from the Default Printer drop-down list.
Blank or partial page printed Check the ink leve ls The ink cartridges may be runn ing low on ink. Clean the printhead Complete the prin thead cleaning pr ocedure. For more inf ormation, see C lean the printh ead . The print head may need to be clean ed if the print er was turned off improperly.
Placement of the te xt or graphics is wrong Check how the media i s loaded Make sure the media width and length guides fit snug ly against the edges of the stack of media, and make sure the tray is not overloaded. For mo re information, see Loa d media .
Envelopes prin t incorrectly Try the following so lutions to resolve the issue. Solutions are l isted in order, with the most likely solution f irst. If the first so lution does not solve th e problem, conti nue trying the remaining soluti ons until the issue is resolved.
• Solution 4: Check the printer driver sta tus • Solution 5: Wait un til the product co mpletes the current o peration • Solution 6: Re move all cancelled pri nt jobs from t he queue • Solutio.
If this did not so lve the issue, try the next solution. Solution 5: Wait unti l the product completes the cur rent operation Solution: If t he product is performin g another task your pri nt job will be d elayed until the produ ct comp letes the current task.
Cause: The print carriage had stal led. If this did not solve th e issue, try the next solu tion. Solution 9: Check the co nnection from the produ ct to your computer Solution: Check the connection fr om the product to your com puter. Verify t hat the USB cable is s ecurely plugge d into the USB port on the back of the pr oduct.
Nothing happe ns when I try to print Try the following so lutions to resolve the issue. Solutions are l isted in order, with the most likely solution f irst. If the first so lution does not solve th e problem, conti nue trying the remaining soluti ons until the issue is resolved.
Solution 4: Check the pr inter driver status Solution: The printer driv er status might have change d to either offline or stop printing . To check the printe r driver status ▲ In the HP S olution Ce nter, click th e Status tab. Cause: The status o f the printer driver had changed .
Solution 8: Ma ke sure the p rint carriage ca n move freely Solution: Unplu g the power cable if it is not already unpl ugged. Check to se e if the print carriage will move freely from one side of the printer t o the other. Do not try to force it to move if it is hung up on somet hing.
The margins are no t printing as exp ected Try the following sol utions to resolve th e issue. Solutions are listed in order, wi th the most likely solution first. If the first solutio n does not solve the proble m, continue trying the remaining solut ions until the i ssue is resolved.
Text or graphics are cut off at the edge of the page Try the following so lutions to resolve the issue. Solutions are l isted in order, with the most likely solution f irst. If the first so lution does not solve th e problem, conti nue trying the remaining soluti ons until the issue is resolved.
If this did not solve th e issue, try the next solu tion. Solution 3: Load the sta ck of papers corr ectly Solution: If the paper is mi sfeeding, it cou ld cause parts of the d ocument to cut off . Remove the stack of paper fro m the input tray, an d then reload the pape r.
Solution 2: Load paper in the i nput tray Solution: If the pro duct has only a few sheets rem aining, load more pap er in the input tray. If there is plenty of paper in the input tray, remove the paper, tap th e stack of paper against a flat surface, and rel oad the paper into the input tray.
Wrong, inaccurate, or b leeding colors If your printout has one of t he following pri nt quality proble ms, try the solutio ns in this section for help. • Colors look w rong For example, green w as replaced wi th blue in your p rintout. • Colors run into ea ch other, or look like th ey are smeared on the page.
If this did not so lve the issue, try the next solution. Solution 3: Check the pap er type Solution: HP recommend s that you use HP papers or any other paper type that is appropriate for t he product. Always make sure the paper you are printing o n is flat.
Solution 5: Check the print settings Solution: Check the print settings. • Check the print setting s to see if the color setti n gs are incorrect. For example, check to see if the document is set to pr int in grayscale.
After cleaning th e printhead, print a pri nt quality repo rt. Evaluate the print quality report to see if the print quality p roblem still e xists. For more information, see: • Clean the printhe ad • Print and evaluat e a print quality re port Cause: The printhead needed to be cleaned.
Solution 2: Check the in k levels Solution: Check the estima te d ink levels in the ink cartridges. NOTE: Ink level alerts and indicators provide estimates for pl anning purposes only. When you receive a l ow-ink alerts, co nsider having a replace ment cartridge available to avoi d possible printin g delays.
After cleaning th e printhead, print a pri nt quality repo rt. Evaluate the print quality report to see if the print quality p roblem still e xists. For more information, see: • Clean the printhe ad • Print and evaluat e a print quality re port Cause: The printhead needed to be cleaned.
Solution 2: Use a higher pri nt quality setting Solution: Check the print quality set ting and make sure it is not set too low. Print the image with a high print quality sett ing, such as Best or Maximu m dpi . Cause: The print qu ality setting was se t too low.
If this did not so lve the issue, try the next solution. Solution 3: Check th e ink levels Solution: Check the estimated ink leve ls in the ink cartr idges.
If prompted, choose your count ry/region, and then click Contact HP for information on calling for techni cal support. Cause: There was a problem with the printhead. Printouts are fa ded or have dull colors Try the followin g solutions if the colo rs in your printout are not as bright a nd intense as you expected.
NOTE: Ink level alerts an d indicators provide es timates for planni ng purposes only. When you receive a low- ink alert, consid er having a replaceme nt cartridge available to avoid possi ble printing de lays. You do not need to replace the ink cartridges until print quality becomes un acceptable.
• Solution 3: Print the i mage in a smaller size • Solution 4: Al ign the printh ead Solution 1: Check the print settings Solution: Check the print settings. • Check t he paper type setting to ma ke sure it m atches the ty pe of paper loa ded in the input t ray.
Printouts h ave vert ical streaks Vertical Streaks are streaks th at are parallel to t he direction that t he paper moved through the de vice. Solution: HP recommend s that you use HP papers or any other paper type that is appropriate for t he product.
If you removed the rear do or to clear a paper jam, replace it. Gent ly push the door forward until it sn aps into place. Cause: The rear doo r was not securel y installed. Ink streaks on the back of the paper Try the following sol utions if there is sme ared ink on the back of you r printout.
Solution 1: Restart the pr oduct Solution: Turn off the product, and then u nplug the power cord. Plug th e power cord back in, and then p ress the Power button to turn on t he product. Cause: The product experienced an error. If this did not so lve the issue, try the next solution.
If this did not solve th e issue, try the next solu tion. Solution 5: Check for a paper jam Solution: Check for paper debris in the front of the devi ce. Remove any debris yo u find. CAUTION: Trying to clear a paper jam from the front of the device can damage the print mechanism.
Solution 2: Use TrueTy pe or OpenType fonts Solution: Use TrueT ype or OpenType fonts t o ensure that the prod uct is able to print smooth f onts. When selectin g a font, look f or the TrueType or OpenType icon. TrueType icon OpenType icon Cause: The font was a custom size.
The product prin ts slowly Try the following sol utions if the product i s printing very slowly. • Solution 1: Use a lower print qualit y setting • Solution 2: Check the ink levels • Solution 3: Conta ct HP support Solution 1: Use a lower print quality setting Solution: Check the print quality setting.

To clean the printhead from the Too lbox (Mac OS X) 1. Click the HP Utility icon in the Dock. NOTE: If HP Utilit y is not in the Dock, click the Spotlight icon on the right side of the menu bar, type HP Util ity in the box, and then cli ck the HP Utility entry.
To align th e printhead f rom the embedd ed Web serv er 1. Load letter, A4, or legal unused plain w hite paper into the main input tray. 2. Click the Settings tab, click Device Serv ices in the left pan e, select Align Printer from the drop-do wn list in the Print Qual ity section, and then click Run Diagnostic .
Pages are skewing • Make sure the m edia loaded in t he trays is align ed to the paper gui des. If need ed, pull out the trays from the device and reload the me dia properly, makin g sure that the paper guides are properly aligned. • Load media i nto the device on ly when it is not pr inting.
Check the d evice IP ad dress • To check the IP address of th e device from th e control panel, print the network configuration page. For more information, see Understand the n etwork configuration status report . • Ping the device using the IP address from t he command prompt.
Problems c onnecting to a wired network • If the Networ k light on the device control pa nel does not turn on, ma ke sure that all of the “General n etwork troubl eshooting” con ditions are met .
Make sure the ink cartridges are prope rly install ed 1. Make sure the product is turned on. 2. Open the ink car tridge access do or by lifting from the front right of the prod uct, until the door locks into place. NOTE: Wait until the p rint carriage stop s moving before proceeding.
Software installation suggestions Check the comp uter system • Make sure that your computer is runni ng one of the suppor ted operating systems. • Make sure that the computer meets at least the minimum system requirements. • In the Windows d evice manager, make sure t hat the USB drivers ha ve not been disabled .
◦ Compare the IP address listed in the dialo g box and make sure it matches the IP address listed on the network confi guration page. If the IP addresses are different, change the IP addre ss in the dialog box t o match the address on th e network configuratio n page.
Clear a jam in the device To clear a jam 1. Remove all media from the output tray. CAUTION: Trying to clear a paper jam from the front of the device can damage the print mechanism. Always access and clear paper jams throug h the rear access panel. 2. Check the rear acce ss panel.
• Make sure the outp ut tray is not overly full . • Make sure the media guide are adjusted snug ly against the media, but do not crinkle or bend the med ia.
Printhead problem - The fo llowing printhe ad has a problem Use the followin g to correct the error: • Advanced printhead m aintenance • Supplies Advanced printhead maintenan ce WARNING! Only reinstall t he printhead as part of the proced ure for Prin thead Problem error messages To reinst all the pri nthead 1.
4. Lift the latch h andle on the pri nt carriage. 5. Remove the pr inthead by lifti ng it straight up . Chapter 4 98 Maintain and troubleshoot.
6. Clean the print head. There are three areas of t he printhead that need to be cleaned: the plastic ramps on both sides of th e ink nozzles, the edg e between the nozzl es and the elec trical contacts, and t he electrical con tacts.
b . Use a fresh, lightl y dampened, lin t-free cloth to wi pe any accumulated ink and debris from the edge between the n ozzles and the conta cts. c . Use a fresh, lightl y dampened, lint-f ree cloth to wipe t he plastic ramps on bo th sides of the no zzles.
7. Clean the electrical contacts insid e the product. To clean the elec trical contacts i n the product a . Lightly dampen a clean, lint-f ree cloth with bo ttled or di stilled water. b . Clean the elect rical contacts in th e pro duct by wipi ng with the clot h from top to bottom.
9. Carefully lower the latch handle. NOTE: Make sure you lower the lat ch handle before reinserting the ink cartridges. Lea ving the latch h andle raised can result in in correctly seated i nk cartridges and problems print ing. The latch must remain down in order to correctly install the ink cartridges.
Ink Alert Choose you r error • HP recommends you h ave a replacement avai lable for when pr int quality become s no longer accept able. • The amount of in k in the followi ng cartridge may be l ow enough to cause poor print quality and ca rtridge changes ma y be required soon .
Go to: www.hp.com/support . If prompted, choose your country/regio n, and then click Contact HP for in formation on calling for tech nical support. Ink system fai lure Use the followi ng to correct the error: Turn off the product , unplug the po wer cord, and wait 10 se conds.
