Avoid using the T rue Color output type unless ne cessary . This output type of fers exceptional quality for colo r photos or drawings, but it also creates large file sizes.

Back to TOC 23 Scanning fr om scann er but tons The scanner buttons provide an easy way to scan items directly to destinations using settings optimized for th e destination you choose. Y ou do not view or change scanned images before they go to the destination.

At the computer , you can click Cancel to choose add itional copy settings in the HP Scanjet Copy Utility before the p ages print. Number of copies (some models only) Choose the number of copies before pressing Copy .

28 Scanning from scanner buttons Back to TOC Sendin g a scan to a website On some models, you can share images with other people by scanning directly to the W eb with the Share-to-W eb button ( ). People you know can view photos and other items by visiting yo ur website, which will have its own address.
Back to TOC Scanning from scanner buttons 29 Scannin g for photo reprints Y ou can scan photographs and prep are them for photo reprints by using the Photo Reprint button ( ). Photo reprint s optimize the use of photo p aper , allowing you to print multiple photos on one p age.

36 Scanning from scanner buttons Back to TOC Original type Choose one: Photo Document Prompt for original type each time By default, the original type is set to Prompt for o riginal type each time . If you scan a variety of orig inal types, this allows you to make the original type choice each time.

An update ensures that the scanner buttons can send to supported new destinations on your compu ter .

Back to TOC 39 Scanning fr om HP Pr ec isionscan Pr o Using the HP Precisionscan Pro softwa re, you can preview scanned images and make changes to the images before you send them to a destination or file them. Y ou start the HP Precisionscan Pro software from a scanner button or the Programs grou p in the Star t menu.

Then, you can see the scanned image and edit it, if necessary , before sending it to a destination or savin g it as a file.
42 Scanning from HP Precisionscan Pro Back to TOC Croppin g or sel ec ting an area for final scan Once a scanned ima ge appears in the HP Precisionsca n Pro software, you must select which area becomes the final scanned image by creating a selection ar ea.

46 Scanning from HP Precisionscan Pro Back to TOC Cha ng i ng re so lu t i o n Resolution determines the amount of data in a scanned image. Th e scanning software chooses the optimal resolution based on the output type. This resolution generally does not need to change.
Back to TOC Scanning from HP Precisionscan Pro 47 Rotating an ima ge Y ou can rot ate the image in 90-degree increments clockwise or counterclockwise. Y ou might need to rotate the imag e if you placed the bottom of the item at the top of the scanner glass, or if the item was sideways.
48 Scanning from HP Precisionscan Pro Back to TOC Sharpening an im ag e Increasing sharpening enhances det ail in the image. The HP Precisionscan Pro software automa tically selects the optimal sharpen level, but you can change it. Y ou might want to increase sharpening if the ima ge looks fuzzy .
Back to TOC Scanning from HP Precisionscan Pro 49 Makin g optional a dj ustm ents , ad v an ce d These optional adjustments are ones that most people generally do not use or need, but some advanced users might want them for special effect s or other needs.
50 Scanning from HP Precisionscan Pro Back to TOC C han ging mi dtones The midtone sett ing lets you lighten or darken the middle values in an image. The range for the number in the Mid tone field is 1.0 to 4.0. Moving toward 1.0 darkens the image. Moving toward 4.
Back to TOC Scanning from HP Precisionscan Pro 51 C han ging hi ghlights The highlight is the value in the image that is represented on the screen as white. All values lighter than the highlight also appear as white. The image has a default highlight setting.
52 Scanning from HP Precisionscan Pro Back to TOC Cha ng i ng sh ad o w s The shadow is the value in t he image that is represented on the screen as black. All values darker than the shadow a lso appear as black. The image has a default shadows value.
Back to TOC Scanning from HP Precisionscan Pro 53 C hec king for cl ipped areas The lightest or darkest areas of an imag e that will print without any detail in them a re known as clipped areas. The lightest areas, or highlights, will print as the color of the paper (without ink or toner) an d therefore will have no det ail.
54 Scanning from HP Precisionscan Pro Back to TOC Set tin g pix el ou tpu t lev els The output levels setting lets you create intere sting effect s for scanned pictures. When you select this command, the Black and White output levels appear . By default, white is set to 255, and black is set to 0.
Back to TOC Scanning from HP Precisionscan Pro 55 Vie win g RGB values and pix els Y ou can view the RGB values and pixel color for any spot in a color or grayscale image using the RGB meter . T o view the RGB values and pixel color for slides, negatives, or other transparent items, use "V iewing RGB values and pixel color" on page 83 .
56 Scanning from HP Precisionscan Pro Back to TOC About t he histogram The histogram is a graph of the distribution of pixels in the selection area. The magenta line represent s the current setting for shadow . The red line represents the curr ent setting for highlight.
Back to TOC Scanning from HP Precisionscan Pro 57 C han ging t h e sa turation Color in an image consist s of its hu e and the saturation. Saturation refers to the intensity of the colors. The software sets the sa turation for an image, but you can cha nge it.
58 Scanning from HP Precisionscan Pro Back to TOC C hangin g t he bl ac k an d white threshold Changing black and white threshold on ly applies to images using the Black & White Bitmap output type. The threshold is a value in the image that represent s the border between black and white.
Back to TOC Scanning from HP Precisionscan Pro 59 Setting w hich color s beco me black or w hite in blac k & white bitma ps This procedure only applies to color images that will be using the Black & White Bitmap output type. It allows yo u to create special ef fects, or to correct for originals on colored p aper .
60 Scanning from HP Precisionscan Pro Back to TOC Desc reen ing im a ges Use the Descreen command to reduce undesirable patterns in printed items you are scanning. An example of an undesirable p attern is a moiré pattern, or the circles that often appear on pictures printed in newspapers.

Often a good choice because W indows itself and most Windows programs accept the .bmp file type. FlashPix (.fpx). A FlashPix file contains a co mplete image plus several lower resolution copies of that imag e.
64 Scanning from HP Precisionscan Pro Back to TOC Printin g The selection area is the p art of the image that prints. If there is no selection border , the content s of the entire scanner bed, including blank a reas, pri nt.

92 Troubleshooting and maintaining Back to TOC The image is completely black or completely white . The item might not be placed corre ctly on the scanner glass or in the ADF . Make sure that the item you are trying to scan is placed face down on the glass, or face up in the ADF .

Press down firmly until you hear a click. 6 Restack all p ages and reload them into the ADF . 7 On the ADF prompt on the computer , reselect any se ttings you had changed and click Scan T o or Scan again.
