EN Chapter 2: Printing T asks 25 2 Printing T asks Overview This chapter presents basic printing tasks , such as: • Selecting the output bin. • Loading the trays. • Printing on both sides of paper with the optional duplexer. • Printing on special paper, such as letterhead and envelopes.
26 Chapter 2: Printing T asks EN Selecting the Output Bin The printer has two output locations: the rear output bin and the top output bin. T o use the top output bin, be sure the rear output bin is closed. T o use the rear output bin, open it. The f ollowing tab le shows the minimum and maximum siz es of paper suppor ted in the output bins.
EN Chapter 2: Printing T asks 27 Printing to the T op Output Bin The top output bin collects paper f ace-down, in correct order . The top output bin should be used f or most print jobs and is recommen.
28 Chapter 2: Printing T asks EN Printing to the Rear Output Bin The printer alwa ys prints to the rear output bin if it is open. P aper comes out of the printer face-up , with the last page on top . T o open the rear output bin, grasp the handle at the top of the bin and pull the bin down.
EN Chapter 2: Printing T asks 29 Adjust the Paper Stop F or printing stacks of large paper only , the paper stop on the top output bin pre v ents long paper from being pushed ov er the edge of the pr inter . 1 Push in the center of the paper stop to release it.

32 Chapter 2: Printing T asks EN 5 Align the rear guide with the desired paper size . With the guide angled slightly tow ard the front of the tra y , inser t the two front tabs (A) into the appropriate holes. Push the guide upright, snapping the center tab (B) into place.

36 Chapter 2: Printing T asks EN Guidelines for Printing Both Sides of Paper Caution Do not print on both sides of labels, transparencies , en v elopes, vellum, or paper hea vier than 28 lb (105 g/m 2 ). Damage to the printer and paper jamming might result.

38 Chapter 2: Printing T asks EN Paper Orientation for Printing Both Sides of Paper The duple x er prints the second side of paper first, so paper such as letterhead, prepunched, and preprinted paper need to be or iented as shown in Figure 10.

These options can be selected from the printer dr iv er or from the printer’ s control panel (set BINDING from the P aper Handling Menu and ORIENTATION from the Pr inting Menu).
40 Chapter 2: Printing T asks EN Printing Special P aper Special paper includes letterhead, prepunched (including 3-hole punched), env elopes, labels, transparencies , full-bleed images, rotated paper , index cards , postcards , custom-size , and hea vy paper .

42 Chapter 2: Printing T asks EN Printing En velopes Many types of en velopes can be printed from T ra y 1. (Up to 10 can be stack ed in the tray .) Printing performance depends on the construction of the env elope . Alwa ys test a fe w sample envelopes bef ore purchasing a large quantity .
EN Chapter 2: Printing T asks 43 Loading Envelopes in Tray 1 1 Open T ra y 1 and pull out the tray e xtension. If the en velopes are longer than 9 inches (229 mm), flip open the second tra y extension. 2 Open the rear output bin and pull out the tra y extension.
44 Chapter 2: Printing T asks EN Printing Labels Use only labels recommended f or use in laser printers. Multi-thickness labels and labels that do not stac k flat might print better rotated. T o print rotated paper, see page 47. Make sure that labels meet the specifications f or the input tra y you use (page A-9).
EN Chapter 2: Printing T asks 45 Do not: Caution F ailure to follo w these instructions can damage the printer . • Do not load the trays to capacity because labels are heavier than paper. • Do not use labels that are separating from the backing sheet, wrinkled, or damaged in any way.
46 Chapter 2: Printing T asks EN Printing T ransparencies Use only transparencies recommended f or use in laser pr inters. F or transparency specifications, see page A-9. • Load transparencies in Tray 1 with the side-to-be printed facing up and the top edge toward the right.
EN Chapter 2: Printing T asks 47 Printing Rotated P aper The printer can pr int letter , A4, A5, Executiv e, and B5 (JIS) in a rotated orientation (shor t-edge first) from T ra y 1. The pr inter can print letter and A4 in a rotated or ientation from a 500-sheet tra y .
48 Chapter 2: Printing T asks EN 500-Sheet T ray: 1 Rotate the dial inside the front of the tra y to the correct paper size. 2 F rom the P aper Handling Menu in the printer’ s control panel, select LTR-R or A4-R as the paper size . 3 Load paper with the side-to-be printed facing do wn, and the top , shor t-edge toward the front of the tr ay .
EN Chapter 2: Printing T asks 49 Printing Full-Bleed Images Full-bleed images e xtend from edge to edge of the page. T o achie ve this eff ect, use larger paper , then trim its edges to the desired size. Caution Ne v er print directly to the edge of paper .
50 Chapter 2: Printing T asks EN Printing Car ds, Custom-Size and Heavy P aper Custom-size paper can be printed from T ra y 1 or the optional 500-sheet tra y . For paper specifications, see page A -2. The maximum paper weight is 53 lb (199 g/m 2 ) from T ray 1 and 28 lb (105 g/m 2 ) from the 500-sheet tra y .

EN Chapter 2: Printing T asks 55 Printing V ellum V ellum is special lightweight paper similar to parchment. Print v ellum from T ray 1 only , and open the rear output bin. Do not pr int on both sides of v ellum. 1 Load v ellum with the side-to-be-printed facing up and the top , shor t edge toward the right.
56 Chapter 2: Printing T asks EN Adv anced Printing T asks This section will help you tak e full advantage of the printer’ s features . These tasks are “adv anced” because they require y ou to change settings from the printer’ s control panel or the printer driver .
EN Chapter 2: Printing T asks 57 Printing the First Page on Different Paper F rom the PCL 6 printer dr iver , you can choose to print the first page of a document on diff erent paper than the rest of the pages. Look f or “Use diff erent paper f or first page” in the pr inter driver .
58 Chapter 2: Printing T asks EN Customizing T ray 1 Operation Customize T ray 1 to fit your printing needs. The printer can be set to pr int from T ra y 1 as long as it is loaded, or to print only from T ray 1 if the type of paper loaded is specifically requested.
EN Chapter 2: Printing T asks 59 Manually Feeding Paper from Tray 1 The Manual F eed f eature allows y ou to print on special paper from T ra y 1, such as envelopes or letterhead. If Man ual F eed is selected, the printer will pr int only from T ra y 1.
60 Chapter 2: Printing T asks EN Printing by T ype and Siz e of P aper Y ou can configure the pr inter to select paper by type (such as plain or letterhead) and size (such as letter or A4), as opposed to source (a paper tra y).

EN Chapter 3: Printer Maintenance 63 3 Printer Maintenance Overview This chapter e xplains basic printer maintenance. • Managing the toner cartridge. • Cleaning the printer. 64 Chapter 3: Printer Maintenance EN Managing the T oner Car tridg e HP P olicy on Non-HP T oner Car tridges Hewlett-P ac kard Company cannot recommend use of non-HP toner car tridges, either new or remanuf a ctured. Because the y are not HP products, HP cannot influence their design or control their quality .
EN Chapter 3: Printer Maintenance 65 Continue Printing When T oner is Low When toner is low , the pr inter’ s control panel displays the TONER LOW message. • If the TONER LOW message displa ys, but the printer continues printing, TONER LOW is set to CONTINUE (the default setting).

Clear paper jams: Occasionally , paper can jam dur ing printing. This section will help you to locate paper jams , properly clear them from the printer , and solv e repeated paper jams.
72 Chapter 4: Prob lem Solving EN Clearing P aper Jams If the printer’ s control panel displays a paper jam message , look f or paper in the locations indicated in Figure 22, then see the procedure f or clearing the paper jam. Y ou might need to look f or paper in other locations than indicated in the paper jam message.
EN Chapter 4: Problem Solving 73 Clearing Jams fr om the Input T ray Areas Note T o remov e paper from the T ra y 1 area, slowly pull the paper out of the printer . F or all other tra ys, follo w the steps below . 1 Slide the tra y out of the printer , and remov e any damaged paper from the tra y .
74 Chapter 4: Prob lem Solving EN Clearing Jams fr om the T op Cover Area 1 Open the top cov er and remov e the toner car tridge. Caution T o pre vent damage to the toner car tridge, do not expose it to light f or more than a f ew min utes. 2 Use the green handles to lift the paper access plates.
EN Chapter 4: Problem Solving 75 Clearing Jams fr om the Output Areas Note If paper is jammed in the top output area, but most of the paper is still inside the pr inter , it is best to remov e it through the rear door . 1 Push in the two gr a y latches to release the rear door .

Check the doors and paper guides . CHOSEN LANGUAGE NOT AVAILABLE A print job requested a pr inter language that does not e xist in the printer .
EN Chapter 4: Problem Solving 81 FLASH IS WRITE PROTECTED The flash disk DIMM is protected, and no ne w files can be written to it. Disable the write protection through HP JetAdmin. INPUT DEVICE CONDITION xx.yy An input paper handling device has a condition that needs attention bef ore printing can resume.
82 Chapter 4: Prob lem Solving EN MEMORY SETTINGS CHANGED The printer changed its memor y settings because it did not have enough memor y to use the pre vious settings f or I/O Buff ering and Resource Saving. This usually occurs after remo ving memor y from the printer , adding a duplex er , or adding a printer language.
EN Chapter 4: Problem Solving 83 RAM DISK FILE SYSTEM IS FULL Delete files and then try again, or tur n the printer off, and then turn the printer on to delete all files on the device. (Delete files using HP JetAdmin, HP FontSmar t, or another software utility .
84 Chapter 4: Prob lem Solving EN 13.x PAPER JAM [LOCATION] Remov e jammed paper from the specified location (page 72). Open and close the top cov er to clear the message. If the message persists after all jams hav e been cleared, a sensor might be stuck or brok en.
EN Chapter 4: Problem Solving 85 22 SERIAL I/O BUFFER OVERFLOW altern ates with PRESS GO TO CONTINUE T oo much data was sent to the serial por t. Make sure the correct serial pacing option is selected from the I/O Menu in the printer’ s control panel (page B-18).
86 Chapter 4: Prob lem Solving EN 41.x PRINTER ERROR alternates with PRESS GO TO CONTINUE A temporary pr inting error occurred. Press [Go] . The page containing the error will automatically be reprinted. If this message persists, contact an HP-authorized service or suppor t provider .
