ENWW 1-3 Printer configurations This printer is available in the configurations described in this section. HP Business Inkjet 3000 The HP Business Inkjet 3000 pr int er is a four-color Inkjet print er that prints up to 21 page s per minute (ppm) in mon ochrome (black and white) and 17 ppm in color in Fa st mode.

ENWW 2-3 1 Tray 1 Note The printer comes with a single sheet manua l feed unit in the Tray 1 location. You can purcha se a multipurpose tray as an op tional accessory, which is installed in place of the single sheet manual feed unit in th e Tray 1 locatio n.
2-4 ENWW Setting up the printer To set up the printer, complete the following steps. For illustrated setup informati on, see the setup p oste r. Step 1: Set up the printer 1 Select a location for t he printer that is level, stu rdy, and can support all corners of the print er, such as a low table .
ENWW 2-5 WA R N I N G ! Be careful to keep your fingers a nd hands clea r of the bot tom of the printer . 5 Remove the tape and packin g materials from the print er. Step 2: Connect the power cord and turn on the printer 1 Connect the power co rd to the printer an d an alternat ing cur rent (AC) power re ce ptacle.
2-6 ENWW Step 4: Install the ink cartridges 1 Make sure the pr int er is turn ed on. 2 Lift the ink c artridge cove r. 3 Remove each ink cartridge from its package. 4 Align the colored a rr ows, and then insert each ink cartridge into its color-coded slo t.
ENWW 2-7 3 Lift and push the la tch toward the back of th e printer (item 3 in the graphic). 4 Remove each printhead fr om its package. 5 Remove the protect i ve tape from each print head. 6 Remove the plastic cap from each printhead by pulling down as indicated by the arrow on the cap.
2-8 ENWW Windows printer software components The printer softwar e fo r Windows includes the following compo nents: z Printer drivers Printer drivers access the printer fea tu res and allow the computer to communicate with the pr int er.

ENWW 2-1 1 Connecting the printer using a USB cable in Windows Use a USB cable to connect the printer t o the comput er if the co mpute r has a USB port and is running Window s 98, Windows Millennium Edition (Me), Windo ws 2000, or Windows XP.
2-12 ENWW 8 Follow the instructions on the screen to complete the installation. 9 Connect the USB cable t o the computer and the printer . The Found New Hardware wizard ap pears on the computer scr een, and the printer icon is created in the Printers folder .
ENWW 2-13 Connecting the printer with a USB cable in the Mac OS Note When setting up the prin ter using a USB cable, install the software first, and then connect the pr inter to the compute r. 1 Insert the Starter CD into the CD-ROM d rive. The CD m enu runs automatically.

ENWW 2-15 Connecting the printer using a network connection in Windows Note When setting up the printer using a networ k connection, conn ect the printer to the netwo rk first, and th en install the s oftware. 1 If an HP Jetdirect print server was purchased separately, install it in the printer .
2-16 ENWW Connecting the printer with a network (Ethernet) cable in the Mac OS When connecting the pr inter to a network in the Mac OS, make sure the HP Jetdirect print server is installed in the printer before you install the printer software.
ENWW 2-17 Mac OS X 10 Open the Print Center (located in the ApplicationsUtilities folder), and then click Add Printer . 11 If you are u sing an AppleT alk network, on the pop-up menu, select AppleTalk . -Or- If you are using an LPR ne twork, on the pop- up me nu, select LPR Printer using IP , and then type the IP address for the printer.
2-18 ENWW To enable optional accessories in the Mac OS Note Mac OS X automatically enables all optional a ccessories in the printer driver when you install the printer software. 1 Click the printer ’ s desktop printer icon. 2 On the Printing menu, click Change Setup .

3-2 ENWW Installing the optional multipurpose tray Note To install the multipurpose tray, you must first remove the singl e sheet manual f eed unit from the Tray 1 location at the back of the printer . 1 Grasp the handle under th e single sheet manual feed unit.
ENWW 3-3 Auto-duplex unit The printer can autom atically print on both sides of pap er with the auto-duplex un it. If yo ur prin te r do es not ha ve an au to -d u ple x uni t, one can be purchased separately. For info rmation about using th e auto-duplex un it, se e “ Printing on both sides of the page .
3-4 ENWW 6 Insert Tray 2 into the Tray 2 case and push it firmly into the printer until it locks into place. Note If the tray will not close completely when it is reinserted, pull out the tray half-way, and then push it in again until it clos es completely.
ENWW 3-5 Step 1: Install the HP Jetdirect print server CA UTION The HP Jetdirect print server cont ains electronic components tha t can be damaged by static electricity. To p revent buildup of static electricity , maintain freq uent contact wit h any bare shee t metal surface on the prin te r.

ENWW 3-7 Obtaining more information If you enco unter any pr oblems or d ifficulty printing over a net work, see “ Configuring networ k connectivity ” and t he following sources. In addition to these sources, printer information an d configuration features are available through HP Web Jetadmin.
3-8 ENWW Additional printer memory and font DIMMs If you often print complex graphics or PostScript emulation documents, or if you print with th e opt ional auto-dupl ex unit, you might want to add more memory t o the pr int er. You can also install a fo nt DIM M to pr in t languages such as Japanese or Korean.
ENWW 3-9 To install memory and font DIMMs CA UTION DIMMs contain electronic component s tha t can be damaged by static electrici ty. To prevent buildup of stat ic electricity, maintain frequent contact with an y bar e sheet me tal sur face on the p rin ter.
3-10 ENWW Note To remove a DIMM, the locks on the DIMM slot must be released by pushing them outward s. 8 Replace the cover and gently apply pr essure until the cover snaps into place. 9 Reattach the power cord and an y cables, and then tur n on the printer .
ENWW 4-1 4 Setting printer options The LCD control panel allows you to change printer settings, view printer statu s and printer message s, and diagnose printe r pr oblems. Additional me nu it ems can ap pear in th e L CD co nt rol pa nel , dep end ing on the opti ons installed in the printer.
4-2 ENWW 9 Ready light: Indicates one of t hree possible states: On — The printer is online and rea dy to accept print jobs . This state also indicates that th e printer may have buffered data that it has finished processing but is waitin g to receive more dat a .
ENWW 4-3 Changing LCD control panel menu settings The LCD control panel is one of three ways to set option s in the printer . You can also change opti ons using settings in the prin ter driver and in the applications from which you print. Printer driver and applicat ion settings override LCD control pane l settings for the current pr int job.
4-4 ENWW Retrieve Job menu This menu displays all stored jobs. You can scroll through the list to fin d and select a specific job. I f the printer has no stored jobs, the LCD control panel displays the message NO STORE D JOBS . Information menu This menu contains printer information pages that give details about the printer and its conf iguration.
ENWW 4-5 Paper Handling menu These settings contro l the default media-sele ction options. Ho wever, printer driver an d sof tware application settings ove rr ide LCD control panel setting s for the curr ent print job. PRINT PCL FONT LIST This item prints the availab le PCL fonts.

ENWW 4-9 Configure Device menu Items in this menu affect printer behav ior. Configur e the printer according to your printin g needs. The Configure Device menu contains several submenus: Printing, Print Quality, Syste m Setup, I/O, and Resets. Printing menu The items in t his menu ar e used whe n printing fro m MS-DOS ® , UNIX, and Linux.

4-12 ENWW Print Quality menu This menu allows you to adjust aspects of print quality, including calibration, printhea d alignment, and qualit y level . . Message Value or Submenu Description ALIGN PRINTHEADS N.A. This item begins the pri nthead alignment process.
ENWW 4-13 System Setup menu The System Setup men u allows y ou to ma ke change s to genera l printer def ault settings such as P owerSa v e Time, printer pe rsonality (language), and jam reco v ery .
4-14 ENWW CLEARABLE WARNINGS JOB ON This item allows you to set the length of time that a clearable warning is displayed on the LCD control pane l. If JOB is selected, warning s are displayed until the end of the curre nt job. If ON is selected, warnings are displayed until you press (select bu tt on).
ENWW 4-15 I/O menu The I/O menu allows you to make changes to p rinter interf ace settings. Message Value or Submenu Descripti on I/O TIMEOU T 5 - 300 This item sets the length of time (in seconds) that the printer w aits for remaining data for a print job.
4-16 ENWW Resets menu You may need to reset the printer In the following circumstances: z You want to restore th e printer ’ s default settings. z Communication betwee n the printer and computer has been interrup ted. CA UTION When you use the restore factor y settings option on this men u, you can lose pr inter configurat ion settings.
ENWW 4-17 Service menu This menu requir es ad m inis trator-level ac ce ss ri gh ts . Th es e item s should be used by trained service personnel only. When p rompted, press (up arrow button) and (do wn arrow butt on) to enter the PIN, and then press (select button) to select an d confirm the PIN.
4-18 ENWW EIO menu The EIO (enhanced input /output) menu ap pears only when an EIO device is installed (such as an HP Jetdirect print server). If the print er contains an HP Jetdirect print server, yo u can configure basic networking parameters u sing the EIO menu.
ENWW 4-19 Resetting the HP Jetdirect print server Resetting the HP Jetdirect print server restores the factory defau lt values of the Jetdire ct pr int se rve r . Note When you r estore the fa ctory default v alues for the HP Jetdirect print server, all previously stored EIO settin gs are lost.

6-2 ENWW * HP Everyday Ph oto Paper is a vailable in some countries/region s as HP Photo Quality Paper. HP Everyday Photo Paper and HP Photo Quality Inkjet Paper are suppor t ed by the auto-duplex unit.
ENWW 6-3 Supported media sizes The following table lists the size s of media that are compatible with th e printer and show s which sizes can be us ed with the printer ’ s paper trays and accessories. CA UTION Some media, such as envelopes and cards, ca n be used with only Tray 1.

6-6 ENWW Selecting and loading print media By default, Tra y 2 is de sig ned to supp or t st andar d m edia size s such as letter and A4, up t o 216 by 35 6 mm ( 8.5 by 14 inches). Tr ay 3 supp orts the same stan dard media sizes, e xcluding ISO B5 and smaller media.

6-10 ENWW The printer can autom atically detect some media size s. When the printer detects the media size, only one size will appear in the TR AY 2 SIZE and TRAY 3 SIZE options. If the size displaye d in t he LCD control pane l does not matc h the media you loa ded in the tray , open the tray and make sure the m ed ia sits as far in as possible.
ENWW 6-1 1 Using the printer driver Changing printer settings in Windows You can change pr inter setting s from the LCD control pane l, from the printer driver, and from a software applica tion. Note Settings in a software application always take precedence over settings in the printer driver or the LCD contr ol panel.
6-12 ENWW Changing printer settings in the Mac OS You can change pr inter setting s in the LCD control pa nel or from the Page Setup and Print dialog boxes in the Mac OS. Settings in the Mac OS override settings in the LCD contro l pane l. You can also select the defau lt printer.
ENWW 6-13 Printing using the printer drivers In most situations, you will probably print documents using the printer driver. Althou gh specific options vary depending on the so ftware application you are using , you can usually gain access to th e printer driver by clicking File , and then Print in the software application.
6-14 ENWW To print using the PCL 6 printer driver 1 On the File menu, click Print . 2 On the Name drop-down menu, select the PCL 6 printer driver, and then click Properties or Setup . (The optio ns might be differen t for your application.) 3 On the Size is drop-down menu, select t he media size on which you want to print.
ENWW 6-15 To print using the emulated PostScript printer driver Note For more in formation a bout printi ng using the emulated P ostScript printer driver, see “ Printing using PostScript emulat ion .
6-16 ENWW 5 Select a print mode for the print job: • Windows 98 and Windows Millennium Edition: On the Device Op tions tab, o n the Printer features list, select Print Quality. On the Change setting for dr op-down me nu, select the print mode . • Windows NT 4.
ENWW 6-17 Printing on envelopes and cards Use Tray 1 to print envelope s and cards. If the option al multipurpose tray is installe d in the Tr ay 1 location, you can load up to 10 en velopes or 10 cards.
6-18 ENWW Printing on transparencies When printing on tran sparencies, use th e f ollowing guidelines: z Use Tray 1 to print on tr ansparencies. If the optiona l multipurpose tray is not installed in the Tra y 1 location and you want to print multiple transpar encies, use Tray 2 or Tray 3.
ENWW 6-19 Printing on heavy media When printing on hea vy media (up to 0.52 mm or 0. 02 inch thick), use Tray 1. It provides a st raight-throug h paper path tha t allo ws the printer to handle heavy or thick med i a without bending or curling the media.
6-20 ENWW Printing on custom size medi a z Use Tray 1 when printing on paper that is 89 by 140 mm (3.5 by 5.5 inches) to 216 by 356 mm (8. 5 by 14 inches). z Use the optio nal multipurpo se tray (if in stalled) when printing on paper that is 8 9 by 140 mm (3.
ENWW 6-21 Printing on both sides of the page The printer can autom atically print on both sides of med ia with an optional auto-d up le x unit. Note Make sure the a uto-dup lex unit has bee n configur ed in th e printer driver you are using. For mor e inf ormation, see “ Enable opt ional accessories in the printer driver .
6-22 ENWW Layout options The four orientat ion options for printing on both sides of a page ar e shown below . These op tions can be selected from the printer driver or from the LCD control panel ’ s PRINTING menu. (Select the DUPLEX BINDING setting, and from the PCL menu, select ORIE NTATION .
ENWW 7-1 7 Using remote diagnostics tools Using the Toolbox The Toolbox provide s status and maintenance info rmation about your printer. In addition, t he Toolbox gives you step-by-ste p guidance fo r basic printing tasks an d pr ov ide s he lp for s olv ing proble m s.
7-2 ENWW Preferences Use the Preferences dia log box to select which Toolbox messages appear. You can specify whethe r you want to be notified by an audio alert when an error occur s, as well as the types of error messages you want to see, such as those messages about me dia and hardwa re .
ENWW 7-3 Using the embedded Web server The printer comes with an embedded Web server. When the printer is connected to a network, the embed ded Web server is automatically available. The embedded Web server allows you to view printer and network status and to manage pr int ing functions from your computer instead of from the LCD control pan el.
7-4 ENWW Gaining access to the embedded Web server You can gain access t o the embedded Web se rver in the following ways: z From the T oolbo x (Windows onl y) Launch the e mbedded Web se rver from the Information tab in th e Toolbox. The defa ult Web browser for the comput er opens and displays the embe dde d Web server informatio n.
ENWW 7-5 z Supplies This section shows the life remain ing of ink cartridges, wit h 0 percent repr esenting a supply that is e mpty. This sec tion also provides supp lies part numbers. To order new supplies, click Order Supplies on the left side of the window.
7-6 ENWW Event Log This page shows the most recent events a nd errors in the printer event log. The most rec en t item ap pe a rs at the to p of the list. Usage Page z Identifica tion This section displays t he printer serial number , product name, and service ID.
ENWW 7-7 Alerts The Alerts pages allow you to set up the pr inter to send out e-mail notifications when certain p rinter events occur. z Notification Distrib ution Lists This section allows y ou to add the e-mail addresses of the people who will receive electronic notification of printer e v ents, such as ink supplies and media path e v ent s.
7-8 ENWW AutoSend AutoSend is a feat ure that can he lp you understand you r printing patterns. Whe n you enable AutoSe nd, usage inform ation is sent to HP.
ENWW 7-9 Networking The Networ king pages of the embedd ed Web server allow the netwo rk administrato r to configur e the HP Jetd irect print ser ver for the printer. This tab will not appear if the printer is c onnected to a network using anything ot her than an HP Jetdirect prin t server card .

ENWW 8-25 Media jams Occasionally, media can jam during print ing. This section describes how to avoid media jams, and how to cle ar jams from t he printer when they do occ ur. Tips for avoiding jams If media rep eatedly jams in the printer, follow these tips to avoid media jams.
8-26 ENWW Clearing jams Because media might be jamm ed in more than one location inside the printer, check the L CD control panel for infor mation about the jam location. Then follow the proced ures that corr espond with the d isplayed message. To clear an all pages jam, co mplete all four pro cedures in the order that they appea r in this section.
