5-1 Maintenance 5 Maintenance Y our pr inter requires very little care. Occasional cleaning and replacement of the ribbon cartridge are all that is required. Lubrication of the printer is not usually necessary . If the print head carriage does not mov e smoothly back and forth, clean the printer in the manner descr ibed in this chapter .
5-2 Maintenance 4. Open the front cover of the printer and remove the ribbon cartridge. Using a soft vacuum brush, gently vacuum the platen, the print head carriage and shaft, and surrounding areas. Y ou can easily slide the print head to the left or right when the po wer is of f.
5-3 Maintenance 3. T o dry the platen, place a dry cloth against the platen and manually rotate the platen knob. 4. Gently wipe the paper bail rollers using the cloth moistened with alcohol or water .
5-4 Maintenance 1. T urn off the printer . 2. Open the front co ver . For easy remo v al, slide the print head carriage between the second and the third bail rollers (from left to right). W arning: The print head ma y be hot if you ha v e been printing recently .
5-5 Maintenance Replacing the Print Head If a specific dot is not printed for all characters, replace the print head. Warning: The print head may be hot if y ou hav e been pr inting recently . T o remov e the print head: 1. T urn off the printer . 2. Open the front cover and remove the ribbon cartridge.
6-1 Trouble-Shooting 6 T r ouble-Shooting Y our pr inter is extremely reliable, b ut occasional problems ma y occur . Y ou can solve many of these problems yourself, using this chapter . If you encounter problems tha t you cannot resolve, contact your dealer for assistance.
6-2 Trouble-Shooting Prob lem Solution Printing is too light or too dark. Make sure that the ri bbon cartridge is properly installed and that the ribbon feeds smoothly . Make sure tha t the paper thickness le ver is set for the thickness of your paper .
6-3 Trouble-Shooting Prob lem Solution The top margin is wrong. The top margin is the sum of the pr inter’ s top-of-form setting, the software-specified top mar gin, and the printer’ s TOP-MRGN setting. Proceed as follo ws: • Make sure that the top-of-form setting is correct.
6-4 Trouble-Shooting P aper Handling Pr oblems and Solutions The follo wing table describes common paper handling problems and suggests solutions. See Chapter 2, “P aper Handling, ” for detailed procedures on loading and using paper . Prob lem Solution Paper cannot be loaded or fed.
6-5 Trouble-Shooting Prob lem Solution Make sur e that the forms tractors are positioned correctly for the width of your paper and that the perforated holes of the paper fit directly o ver the tractor sprockets. See the section, “Using Continuous Forms, ” in Chapter 2, pa ge 2-14.
6-6 Trouble-Shooting Printer F ailures A user cannot generally resolve a pr oblem in v olving defecti ve printer har dware. On detecting a fatal error , the pr inter will: • Stop printing • Beep f.
6-7 Trouble-Shooting Checking V er tical Alignment In bidirectional printing, characters printed from left to right tend to misalign with characters printed from right to left as sho wn belo w: This example shows how printing looks when characters are vertically misaligned.
6-8 Trouble-Shooting 3. Adjust the vertical print alignment at Corr espondence and Draft quality speed. Press the button and the b utton to s witch Letter quality to Correspondence and Draft quality . Examine the parallel bars and adjust the vertical print alignment as described in step 2.
