Welcome Thank you for choosing the Garmin GPS V ® . The GPS V offers true turn-by-turn navigation through the use of its auto-r outing feature. At the touch of a button, you now have access to the shortest and fastest routes, turn directions, and estimated time of arrival at your intended destination.

2 POWER (Red Lamp Symbol) – T urns the unit on and off. A momentary press while the power is on displays the backlight/contrast adjustment window . Press and hold to turn the GPS V off. P AGE – Switches between the main pages and returns the display from an option window back to a main page.
3 Reference Featur es/Data Entry Featur es/Data Entry The following features and pr ocedures are r eferred to thr oughout this manual. CURSOR – A highlighted area on the screen which can be moved up/down/left/ right with the ROCKER KEYP AD to select individual fi elds on the display .
4 Reference Battery Installation DEF AUL T – A system-selected format, built into the operating software or the unit’ s memory , that will be followed unless the user chooses a differ ent setting. For example, the default setting for speed displays is ‘miles per hour’, but can be changed to ‘kilometers per hour’.
5 Reference T urning On/Off T urning the GPS V On (and Off) Before turning the GPS V on, fi nd a suitable location for its use. If you are operat- ing the GPS V indoors, with the “Use Indoors” option, location is not critical.
6 Adjusting Screen Contr ast and Backlighting If lighting conditions make it diffi cult to see the display screen, you can adjust the contrast or turn on the backlight. T o adjust screen contrast and/or backlighting: 1. Press the red power key momentarily .
7 Unit Pages at a Glance All of the information needed to operate the GPS V is found on “pages” (i.e., display screens). If no destination is selected, there ar e three main pages: Satellite Status, Map, and T rip Information.
8 Satellite Status Page The Satellite Status Page appears when the GPS V is fi rst turned on (after the welcome screens and warning pages). This page is part of the main page sequence and may be displayed at any time by pressing P AGE (repeatedly) until it appears.
9 Receiver Status Receiver Status is indicated at the top of the Satellite Status Page, directly above the sky view . The status will be shown as one of the following conditions: Searching for Satellites —the GPS V is looking for any available satellites in view .
10 Satellite Status Page Options Many features of the GPS V are menu driven. Each of the main pages has an options menu, allowing you to custom tailor the corresponding page to your prefer - ences and/or select special features which specifi cally relate to that page.
11 New Elevation —allows you to designate your approximate altitude in or der to better refi ne a 2D position. By default, 2D positioning will attempt to use the last known altitude.
12 The Map Page The GPS V features a real-time moving map to illustrate your curr ent position and your intended route. The Map Page is one of the main operating pages of the GPS V and you’ll likely use it more than any other page.
13 Zooming, Panning and P ointing There are thr ee main actions you can perform on the Map Page: zooming, panning and pointing. The map display has map scales from 20 feet to 800 miles. The curr ent map scale is indicated on the bottom left corner of the map display .

16 Map Page Options Many features of the GPS V are menu driven. Like each of the main pages, the Map Page has an options menu, allowing you to customize the page to your preferences and/or select special features which specifi cally relate to the Map Page.
17 Setup Map —allows you to confi gure the map display to your preferences, includ- ing map detail, map orientation, automatic zooming, and color mode. The map setup options are or ganized under a series of “fi le tabs”, making individual selections easier to locate and change.
18 Reference Map P age Settings Descriptions: Map Detail—Adjusts the amount of map information, such as roads, that is dis- played. ‘Most’ shows maximum detail and ‘Least’ shows minimum detail. The high level of detail may make the map appear cluttered.
19 Change Fields —allows you to choose the data displayed on user -selectable data fi elds adjacent to the map display (to the right of the map when horizontally oriented) or to remove the data fi elds and display a full-screen map. T o change a data fi eld or change the number of on-scr een data fi elds: 1.
20 Measure Distance —allows you to measure the bearing and distance between any two points you choose on the Map Page. Also displays the latitude and longitude of the pointer . T o measure the distance between two points: 1. With the Map Page Options displayed, select ‘Measure Distance’ and press ENTER .
21 T rip Information Page The third main page is the T rip Information Page. If you are making a long trip, you will fi nd the T rip Information Page very useful. It indicates your current speed, average speed, trip odometer and many other helpful statistics about your trip.
22 The following items appear on the T rip Information Page: Current Heading—Y our current direction of travel is indicated on a compass-like display at the top of the page. Speed—Y our current vehicle speed can be indicated in miles per hour , knots or kilometers per hour .
23 T rip Information Page Options Many features of the GPS V are menu driven. Like each of the main pages, the T rip Information Page has an options menu, allowing you to customize the page to your preferences and/or select special featur es which specifi cally relate to the T rip Informa- tion Page.
24 Change Fields —allows you to choose the data displayed on six user -selectable data fi elds on the T rip Information Page (across the middle of page). T o change a data fi eld(s): 1. With the T rip Information Page Options displayed, use the ROCKER KEYP AD to highlight ‘Change Fields’ and press ENTER .
25 Reference T rip Information P age T o average position samples and save the result as a waypoint: 1. With the Map Page Options displayed, use the ROCKER KEYP AD to highlight ‘ Average Location’ and press ENTER . An Average Location window appears .
26 Reference Using Find Using the Find Menu Y ou can search for W aypoints, Cities or interstate highway Exits that are included in the GPS V basemap using the Find Menu. In addition, if you have downloaded the City Select map data, you can search for and fi nd Points of Interest, Addr esses, or Intersections.
27 Using Find Reference 5. Use the ROCKER KEYP AD and ENTER to spell the name of the desired waypoint, city or point of interest on the top line of the page (pressing ENTER after each letter/number is selected). 6. As you enter each letter/number , the list below is continuously updated to display any matches in the data.
28 Reference Using Find Finding nearby waypoints , cities or points of interest: 1. Press FIND to display the Find Menu. 2. Use the ROCKER KEYP AD to select ‘P oints of Interest’, ‘Waypoints’ or ‘Cities’. 3. A pop-up window allows you to fi nd ‘Nearest’ or ‘By Name’.
29 Using Find Reference When viewing waypoints the information window displays the waypoint name, a map symbol, the location in latitude/longitude and elevation. City information includes city name, the size by population and the distance/direction fr om your current location.
30 Reference Using Find To fi nd an exit for another nearby inter state: 1. F ollow steps 1 through 4 on the preceding page , under ‘T o fi nd an Exit’. 2. With a list of nearest exits displayed, press MENU . 3. With ‘Select Exit Road’ highlighted, press ENTER .
31 Using Find Reference Finding an Address or an Intersection Y ou must download MapSource City Select data to your GPS V to search for addresses or intersections, otherwise these options are not selectable. T o locate an address: 1. Press the FIND k ey to display the Find Menu.
32 Reference Using Find Recently Found Places Y ou can use the ‘Recently Found Places’ option to locate Points of Interest, Addresses and Intersections, Cities, and other locations you have recently r etrieved. The Recently Found Places Page uses a series or ‘fi le tabs’ at the top that identifi es each category of recently found places.
33 Goto and Routes Reference Using Goto or Routes The GPS V gives you several options to select a destination: FIND—Use the FIND key as described on pages 26-32. Once you have selected the desired location, use the on-screen ‘Goto’ button that appears on the information page for the desired location to navigate to that location.
34 Reference Goto and Routes For Automatic Routes: 5. Use the ROCKER KEYP AD to select the desired destination category (e .g., ‘Points of Interest’ or ‘Cities’) and press ENTER . 6. For points of interest, waypoints or cities , select between ‘Nearest’ or ‘By Name’ and press ENTER .
35 Goto and Routes Reference When using FIND or automatic routes, you can save the automatically-cr eated Goto or route fr om the Current Route Page. This allows you to retrieve the route again for later use. When viewing saved routes, note that a hiker symbol is used to denote manual and off-r oad routes.
36 Reference Goto and Routes W ith the list of saved routes displayed, pr ess MENU to display an options menu. Functions are available for deleting, copying and renaming saved r outes. Follow Roads —selecting this option will calculate an autoroute for a manual route, so that the r oute follows roads instead of a direct line.
37 Goto and Routes Reference 4. Press MENU to display an options menu. 5. To delete all routes , use the ROCKER KEYP AD to select ‘Delete All’ and press ENTER . 6. To delete the highlighted route (step 3), use the ROCKER KEYP AD to select ‘Delete’ and press ENTER .
38 Reference Goto and Routes 5. Press MENU to display an options menu. 6. Use the ROCKER KEYP AD to select ‘Reverse Route’ or ‘Copy Route’ and press ENTER . When copying a route, a new route is added to the route list with the same name as the original, but with a one-digit number added to the end.
39 Reference Goto and Routes Any saved manual routes can also be edited fr om the Route Information Page. Y ou can insert, remove, move or change waypoints in the r oute. T o edit a route: 1. Press the MENU k ey twice to view the Main Menu. 2. Use the ROCKER KEYP AD to highlight ‘Routes’ and press ENTER .
40 Reference Current Route P age Current Route P age When a destination is selected (when using the FIND key or an automatic route) the Current Route Page is displayed as one of four main pages—between the Map Page and the T rip Information Page.
41 Current Route P age Reference T o view the Next T urn P age from the Current Route P age: 1. With the Current Route P age displayed, press ENTER to display the Next T urn P age for the next turn. 2. Press ENTER or QUIT to exit the Next T urn Page .
42 Reference Current Route P age Recalculate —Recalculates the Goto or route starting fr om your current location. This allows you to update the route if you’ve traveled of f the current route or reselected between faster time or shorter distance calculations.
43 Current Route P age Reference Show Arrival Times (or Show Times to Go )—Switches the Current Route Page between display of arrival times at each turn and the fi nal destination, or showing time to go (in hours/minutes or minutes/seconds, as appropriate).
44 Reference Next T urn P age Next T urn P age The Next T urn Page displays a detailed map of the tur n, along with turn instruc- tions and distance to the turn. When a route is being navigated, the Next T urn Page automatically pops up for ten seconds prior to reaching the turn.
45 Direction Finder P age Reference Direction Finder P age Whenever a destination has been selected using the ‘Off Road’ r outing preference or when navigating a manual route, the Dir ection Finder Page appears in the main page sequence—in place of the Current Route Page.

Like each of the main pages, the Dir ec- tion Finder Page has an options menu, allowing you to customize the page to your prefer - ences and/or select special features which specifi cally relate to the Direction Finder Page.
47 Big Numbers (or Small Numbers )—allows you to select a differ ent Direction Finder Page layout, with a smaller graphic compass and two user -selectable, large-char - acter data fi elds. If ‘Big Numbers’ is selected, ‘Small Numbers’ will appear as an option instead.
48 Marking Y our Location as a W aypoint The GPS V allows you to capture your current location and save it as a “waypoint”. Use this feature to mark locations you may wish to return to in the future (e.g., parked car location, trailhead or fi shing spot).
49 Reference At the bottom of the Mark W aypoint Page there are three on-screen buttons: Delete —deletes the waypoint. Goto —T ells the unit that you want to navigate to that waypoint.
50 Main Menu The Main Menu provides you with a dir ectory of GPS V’ s features and unit settings. From the Main Menu you can mark new waypoints, fi nd points of interest or cities, creates r outes, save track logs, change unit settings, display a calendar , play games, and much more.
51 Main Menu: Routes The Route functions of the GPS V are described on pages 33-39 of this manual. Main Menu: T racks The GPS V draws an electronic br eadcrumb trail on the Map Page as you travel along. This breadcrumb trail is referr ed to as a “track log”.
52 T o set up the track log recording function: 1. Follow the steps on page 50 to select ‘T racks’ and display the Saved T racks P age . 2. Press the MENU k ey to display an options window . 3. Use the ROCKER KEYP AD to highlight ‘Setup T rack Log’ and press ENTER .

57 Main Menu: Setup: Guidance The Guidance Setup Page controls how the GPS V r esponds when you depart from a route, how the Next T urn Page is displayed, and whether or not the GPS V shuts off automatically upon arrival at your destination.
58 Shorter Distance—This setting uses distance as the primary criteria for route calcu- lation. The calculated route will be shorter distance, but may take mor e time. Off Road—This setting cr eates a direct-line r oute from your curr ent location to your destination.

65 The Sun and Moon Accessories Page graphically depicts the position of the sun and moon relative to Earth. Sun and moon positions can be displayed for any date and for any location on Earth. The Sun and Moon Accessories Page also displays sunrise, sunset, moonrise and moonset times for the selected time, date and location.

69 Reference The Games Accessory Page lets you play two games, Breakout and Memory Race. Breakout uses the ROCKER KEYP AD to control a paddle at the bottom of the screen. The object of the game is to defl ect the bouncing ball(s) until all bricks at the top of the screen have been removed.
70 Appendix A The GPS V can be connected to a PC, beacon receiver , marine autopilot or other compatible device using the supplied PC Interface Cable with RS-232 Serial Port Con- nector (P/N 010-10141-00).
71 Appendix B Cleaning The GPS V is constructed of high quality materials and does not require user maintenance other than cleaning. Clean the unit using a cloth dampened with a mild detergent solution and then wipe dry . A void chemical cleaners and solvents that may damage plastic components.
72 Appendix C Messages The GPS V uses an on-screen message system to alert you to unit operating characteristics. Press the ENTER key to acknowledge the message and return to the page you were viewing. Anchor Drag - Y ou have drifted beyond the specifi ed anchor drag alarm distance.
73 Appendix C Proximity Radius Overlaps - The alarm radius specifi ed overlaps the area specifi ed by another proximity waypoint. Route Memory Full - Route memory is full and no more r outes can be saved or added (from another GPS unit or a PC). Route T runcated - The route has been truncated because it was too long.
