34 Maintaining Your Printer Running the H ead Cleaning Utility 1. Make sure th e printer is turne d on but no t printing , and the red b error light is off. (If the red lig ht is flashing or on, you may need t o replace the ink cartridge; see page 35 for detai ls.

Onc e you start replacing a cartridge, yo u must comple te all th e steps i n one se ssion. 1. Make s ure th e pr inte r is turne d on ( the g reen P power light should be on, but not flashing ).

Caution: Don ’ t place the car tridg e under the h ooks; you may da mage the clamp when you c lose it. 7. Press down firmly on the i nk cartridge clamp unt il it sna ps in place.
Maintaining Your Printer 39 Aligning the Prin t Head If your printout s contain misali gned verti cal lines , or you see white or black horizon tal banding , you may nee d to al ign the p rint head. Note: Your pr inter must be co nnect ed direct ly to your comp uter (not o ver a network) to use t he Print Head Al ignment utility.
40 Maintaining Your Printer Cleaning the Printer To keep your printe r working at its best, you sho uld clean it several tim es a year. Follow th ese ste ps: 1. Turn off the printer, unpl ug the power cord, and disconnect the printer cable. 2. Remove a ll pape r, the n use a soft brus h to cl ean any du st or dirt fro m th e sh eet feeder.
