9 1 Printing Without a Computer Y our EPSON S tylus P hoto 785EPX lets you print your photos qu ickly and easily without a computer . J ust insert your digital c amera ’ s memory card in th e print er (wit h the ap propri ate ad apter), c hoose s ettin gs from th e control panel, and press the Print button.
10 Getting Photos into the Prin ter Before you can print, you need to take the memo ry c ard out of your digital camera, inser t it in to the adapter , and then inser t the adapter into the printer .
11 2. Insert the adapter into the p rinter ’ s card slo t. . Make sure th e card is str aigh t and goes in as fa r as i t can . If your computer is connected to your printer and turned on, you will see a message on yo ur screen the first time y ou insert a memory card.
12 If yo u d on ’ t change th e default se ttings, this is what w ill happen whenever you inse rt a memor y card: ■ Pho to Start er will co py y our pic tu res to th e Pho tos fold er on you r desktop. ■ The pictures will be sto red by date. ■ F ilm F actor y will op en automatically .
13 Using EP SON Paper When you print withou t a computer , you can use letter-size plain paper , or the followi n g type s of EPSON sp ecial pap er: These papers are designed to give you professional-quality photo s directly from y our printer . Many mo re paper type s and sizes ar e available when you pri nt from your co mput er .

15 Using th e Contr ol Pane l Y ou can use the control panel to print ever ythin g from a quick snap shot to an 8 × 10 enlargement. Y o u can print a variety of layouts and even enhance your photo s — all without turning on your computer . Y ou use the arrow buttons to select most settings for printing.
16 Select ing P rint Se ttings Always check the sett ings before you start to p rint. Print Mode The Pr int Mode determines wh ich pho tos are printed. P rint a sh eet with s mall, numbered copies of all photos . U nles s you have the optional P revie w Mo nitor , always start by printing an index of all the photos on the memory card.
17 Page Layout Pr i n t b o rd e r l e s s p h o t o s — eithe r on roll pape r or one on eac h sheet of the selected p aper . Photos will be sli ghtly crop ped around th e edges and printing will be a bi t slower (especially near the edges). P rint photos with stand ard mar gins — one on each sheet of the select ed pap er .
18 PhotoEnhance U se this setting if your ca mera suppor ts PRINT Image Matching. If not, you can still use PhotoEnhance to print wi th optimized contra st, saturatio n, and color balance . P rint wi thout PRINT Image Matching and wi thout enhancement.
19 Printing Yo ur Photos W h e n e v e r y o u p r i n t , y o u n e e d t o i n s e r t y o u r m e m o r y c a r d a n d l o a d p a p e r, as describ e d on pages 10 and 14. M ake sure your printe r is set up , plugged in, and turned on, as described on the Sta r t He re sh eet.
20 Printing Sn apshots F irst pr int an index to identify the photo s on the memo ry c ard (as described on page 19). Then choose the pictures you want to print. F ollo w these steps to print snapsh ots on 4 × 6 paper without cutting or trimming. If you want to print a series of snapshots on rol l paper , see page 25.
21 Y ou can press the or button to scroll through your picture numbers and check that the correct setting appears on the Copies menu. 7. I n the PhotoEnhance menu, select On (i f your came ra support s PRINT Image Matching o r to impro ve brightness and contrast) or Off .
22 3. At the P aper T y pe menu, selec t either Glossy or Matte , depending on the type of p aper you ’ re u s in g . ■ If yo u ’ re using E PSON Photo P aper , press the button and hold it until PP flashes on the Select P hoto menu.
23 Printing Mult iple Photos on a Shee t Y ou can p rint 2, 3, 4, or 20 photos on one she et of pape r . The prin ter automatically sizes your photos to fit th e layout you choose o n any size paper — from let ter-si ze to 4 × 6. See page 24 f o r a list of photo sizes on various pape r si zes.

25 Printing Sn apshots on Roll Paper Y ou can print up to 52 bo rderl ess snapsh ots at a time on roll p aper . Fi rst print an index to id entify the photos on the memor y card (as de scribe d on page 19). Then follow the instructions b e low to load ro ll paper and print.
26 5. Insert the tabs on the roll paper ho lders in to the slots at the back of the printer as shown. 6. F eed the end o f the paper i nto the pr inter as far as it will go , then slide the left edge guide against t he paper . 7. Hold the paper in pl ace whi le you press th e z roll paper b utton.
27 Printing Yo ur Pict ures on Ro ll Paper 1. I n the P rint M ode menu, se lect Set . (If you want to print all the pictures on the card, select All .) 2. In the P aper T y pe menu, sel ect Glossy . 3. I n the P aper Size menu, select 4" Roll . P age Layout is automatically set to for borderless prints.
28 9. D o one of the fol lowing: ■ If you want to continue printing on roll paper , press the z roll paper button. The pa per feeds back into the printer . F ollow the steps on page 2 7 to continu e pri nting. ■ If yo u ’ re finished printing on r o ll paper , press the z roll paper button and hold it down for about three se conds.
29 Enhancing Photos and U sing Filters The EPSON S tylus Photo 7 85EP X lets you enhance y our photos even without a computer . Several different types of enhancement are avail able: ■ If yo ur camera supports P RINT Image Matc h ing, you can use the PhotoEnhance sett ing to automatically match your captured images.
30 3. P ress the button to make your pictures 1 level lighter ( 1 is displayed). P ress the button again to make your pictures 2 levels ligh ter ( 2 is display ed). P ress the button o nce or twic e to make them 1 or 2 levels darker ( -1 or -2 is di splay ed).
31 Printing Stickers Y ou can turn y o ur favori te picture into photo stic kers, and even a dd a fun frame around each one. First print an index to iden tify the photo s on the memory card (as described on page 19). M ake sure you have a package of EPSON P hoto St ickers 16 (S041144).
32 5. Go bac k up to the P age Layout menu. P ress and hold the button until the layout icons disappe ar and SE flashes on the Sele ct Photo menu. 6. P ress the large green Print button to print your stic kers. Adding F un Fram es to Your Sticke rs Y ou can print ph oto sti ckers with any of these 5 fr ames.
33 2 Printing With Windows When you p rint from your computer , your EPSON S tylus Photo 7 85EP X works like any other printer . Y ou can edit and en hance y our photos, cr eate photo greeting cards or calendars, and then print the m out. Before you start, make sur e your printer softw are is installed as descri bed on the Sta r t He re sheet.
34 Loading Paper Make sure your printer and computer are turned on. Place your paper against the right ed ge of the sheet feed er and slide the left edge guide against the paper . Don ’ t push the pap er deeper i nto the feeder . F o llow these guideline s when loadi ng paper: ■ Load the pr int able side face up.
35 Load ing En velo pes Y ou can load up to 10 envelo p es at a time, top edge first and printable side up . Place the envelopes agains t the right edge of the sheet feede r and slide the left edge guide against t hem. Set the thickness lever to the + position.
36 Basic Printing Here ’ s w hat to do to pr int a basic document — such as a newsletter or school project. After you cr eat e your document in a software program, follow these s teps to p rint. 1. F rom the F ile menu, click Print . Y o u see a P rin t win dow (your window ma y look slight ly d ifferent) : 2.
37 Y ou see your print er P ro perties window . The most imp ortant thing to remember is to set the correct Media T ype for the p aper you ’ re using.
38 5. Click the Paper tab at the top of the window if you need to change the paper si ze, number of copies, pag e orie ntation, or pri ntable area. 6. Click the Layout tab if you want to reduce or enlarge your pri nted image, print multiple lay outs, or add a watermark.
39 After a moment, this window appears and shows the progress of your print job. Y ou can use the button s to cancel, pause, or restar t printing. Y ou can also see how much ink you have left.

43 Printing Bo rderless Photos Y ou can print your photo s with no margins, extend ing the image all the way to the ed ges of the page. Although BorderF ree printi ng is a bit sl ower (especiall y near the edges) , you get perfect snap shots or e nlargements , without trimming.

48 Printing Yo ur Photos After you select your me dia type and oth er prin t settings, you need to select the paper si ze and numbe r of prints . 1. Click the Paper tab . 2. Click the No M a rgins box. When you see the war ning message, click OK. 3. Select your pape r size.

65 4 Maintaining Your Printer This ch apter de scribe s maintenance p rocedure s to keep y our printer workin g at its b e st, and pr eparation step s for mo ving your pr inter .
66 Cleaning th e Print Head If your printouts are unexp ectedly light or faint, or dots or lines are missing f rom the image, y ou may need to clean the p rint head. This unclogs the nozzles so they can delive r ink properly . P rint head cleaning uses in k, so clea n it only if qua lity d ecli nes.
67 6. If the noz zle check patt ern has no gaps in its dots, click Finish . If the pattern is missing d ots, click Clean to clean the print head again. If you d on ’ t see any improvement after cleaning three or fo ur times, check the so lut ions b egin ning on pag e 82.
68 Replaci ng an Ink Cartridg e When t he red b error li ght fla shes, an i nk car tri dge i s low on in k. T his is a g o o d t i m e t o m a k e s u r e y o u h a v e a n e w c a r t r i d g e . W h e n t h e r e d b light stays on , a cartridg e is empty and you need to replace it.
69 Removing and Instal ling Ink Cartr idges 1. Make sure t he printer i s turned o n and not p rinting (the Processing light should be on, but not flashi ng), then open the pr inter cover . 2. P ress the e ink car tridge replacement b utton. The p rint head moves to the center and the Processing light fl ash es.
70 5. U nwrap th e new ink cartri dge. The n remove only the yellow tape seal on top. 6. T i lt the ne w cart ridge toward you slightly as you in sert it. Lower the cartr idge so that the tabs rest on the hooks as shown: You mu st re move t he yellow tap e from the top of the cartri dge or yo u will perm anen tly da ma ge it .
71 7. P ress down firm ly o n the in k ca rtr idge c lamp unt il it sn aps in p lac e. . 8. If you need to replace the other ink car tridge, repeat steps 3 t hrough 7 befo re co nt inui ng w it h ste p 9. 9. P ress the e ink cartrid ge replacement button and clos e the printer cover .
72 Aligning the Print Head If you r printouts contain misaligned vertic al lines, you may need to align the print head. Y our printer must b e connected t o a local p o rt, not on a network, to use the Print H ead Alignment ut ility . 1. Make sure the printe r is turned o n, but not printing, and letter -size paper is loaded .
73 6. Click R e alignment to print ano ther test page. Make sure the pat tern numbered 8 in each row is the best ali gned. If not, repeat steps 5 and 6. 7. When you ’ re fi nished , cl ick Fi nish . Cleaning th e Printer T o kee p your prin ter workin g at its be st, you should cl ean it s everal tim es a year .
74 Transporting the Printer If y ou mo ve yo ur print er some d istanc e, you n eed to pr epar e it fo r transporta tion in it s original box or one of a similar siz e. Fo llow these steps: 1. T urn on the printe r , wai t until the print head locks in th e far right positio n, then turn of f the printer .

77 Diagnosing Printer Prob lems F irst, c heck the print er ’ s lights and messages as describ e d belo w: Lights Message Explanation Green Processi ng light flashes The printer is receiving a print job, reading a memory card, printing, or performing maintenance procedures.
78 Running a Pr inter Check Y ou can run a pri nter check to de termine whether a problem comes from the pr inter its elf or some other source. The pr inter check als o show s how much black and co lor ink you have left. 1. Make sure both the printer and compute r are turned off.
79 Solving Pro blems Setting Up the Printer or Installing Software The printer makes noise after ink cartridge installat ion. ■ The fir st time yo u install ink cartridg es, the print er must charge its print head f or about two minutes.
80 ■ In W indows 2000, d o n ’ t sele ct Block under Control Panel> System> Hardware> Driver Signing ; s elect Ignore or War n instead . ■ Make sur e Windows 98, M e, or 2000 was preinstalled on your system.
81 Printing is too slow . Mak e sur e your system meets t he requir ements lis t ed in “ No t i c e s . ” If you ’ re printin g a high-resolution image, you need more than the minimum r equirements li sted. Y ou may also need to: ■ Clear space on your har d drive or run a defragmentation utility .
82 Solving Prin t Quality P roblem s You see banding (lig ht lines). ■ The print head nozzles may need cleaning; see page 66 for inst ru ctio ns . ■ Make sure the M ed ia T ype se tting matches the paper you loaded; se e page 4 2 for g uide line s.
83 Your printout is bl urry or smeared. ■ Mak e s u re y ou r p ap e r is n ’ t damp or curled, or loaded face do w n ( t h e p ri n t a b l e s id e s h o u l d b e fa c e u p ) . I f it ’ s dam p or curled, reload a new stack of paper . ■ U s e a support sheet wi th special pape r , or tr y loadin g your paper one sh eet at a time.
84 You see wrong or missing colors. ■ Mak e sur e the I nk se tting is set to Color fo r color ima ges and y our softw ar e is se t for c olor pr inting. ■ The print head nozzles may need cleaning; see page 66 for instr uc tio ns. ■ Always use genuine EP SON ink ca rtridges and do not refill th em.
85 Solvin g Prob lem s with Pa pe r Feeding Too many copies are printi ng. Make sure that the Copies op tion in your pri nter softw are or program is not set for mult iple copies. Paper doesn ’ t eject ful ly or is wrin kled. ■ If the paper d oesn ’ t eje ct fully , you may have set the wrong pap er size.
86 Roll pape r doesn ’ t feed correctly. ■ T o load paper correctly , ge ntly ho ld t he pape r in place wi th your hand while y ou press the z button. Don ’ t force the p aper to f eed into the printer . Allow the paper to feed automatic ally .
87 Solving M iscellaneous Printout Prob lems The image is invert ed. Tu r n o f f Flip Horizontal in the Advanced window or the mi rror settin g in you r p ro gra m . (If yo u ’ re pr inti ng on EP SON Ir on-On Cool P eel T ransfe r Pa p e r, t h e i m a g e should be inverted.
88 The wrong photo is printe d. The photo number ing in the printe r may not match the numbe ring in you r c am era . If yo u ’ re printing w ithout a comput er , firs t print an index to identi fy you r photos . The wrong pa ge size or num b er of co pies pri nts (Window s).
