Installing the Ink Cartridg e w Warning: The in k cartridge is a self-con tained uni t. Under ordin ary use, ink will not leak from a cartridge. I f ink does get on yo ur hands, wash t hem thoro ughly with soa p and w ater. If in k gets into y our eyes, flush t hem immediat ely with water.

4. Li ft up the in k ca r tr idge c lamp as fa r as it will go. R emove t he prot ective mat er i al from t he cartrid ge hold er. 5. O pen the ink cartridg e package. Next, rem ove onl y the yell ow tap e seal from t he top o f the car tridge as shown below.
6. Low er the ink cartrid ge into t he holder w ith the label f ace up and th e arrow ma r k p ointi ng to th e rear. Do not pus h down on the ink ca rtridg e. 7. P ress the ink ca rt ridge cl amp down unt il it lock s in place . c Ca utio n: Once y ou install the in k c artridge, do not open the c lamp again until you repla ce the ink cartridge.
8. P ress the T c leani ng butto n. The p ri nter mo ves the pr int he ad t o i ts h om e (f ar r igh t ) pos it ion . Note: Even if you do n ot press t he T clea ning bu tton, the printer moves the print h ead unit ba ck to its ho me positio n about 60 seconds a fter you in stall the ink ca rtridge.
Conn ecting t he Prin ter to Your PC To connec t the pr inter to your comp uter usin g the built-i n parall el in terface, y ou need a shiel ded, tw isted- pair p arallel cabl e. Conne ct the printer to the co mputer as follows : 1. Ma ke sure both the p rinter a nd comp uter are turned o ff.
Installing the Printer Softwar e After c onnectin g the prin ter to your co mputer , insta ll the prin t er s oftware. It is i ncluded in the “ Printer Sof tware for EPSON Stylus COLOR 300” CD- ROM shipped w ith you r print er.
Installing the software for Windows 95 If y ou are u sing Windo ws 3. 1, see pag e 2-19 for inst ruction s. 1. Ma ke sure Window s 95 i s runnin g and t he printer is o ff. 2. For CD -R OM user s: Ins ert the p rinter s oftware CD sh ipped with your printe r in the CD-RO M dri ve.

Setting the adjust lever When you prin t on thi ck paper such as envelop es or i f ink smears on your docum ents, set th e adjus t lever to the “+” pos ition. To ch ange th e setti ng, open the pri nte r cover an d pos ition the le ver as sh own below.

Howev er, coat ed papers and gloss y paper/ film g ive you be tter resul ts because they redu ce the amou nt of ink that i s absorbed . When the i nk cartrid ge is empty, the prin ter st ops automatica lly and the V ink o ut li gh t is lit c onti nu ou sl y.

Cleani ng the P rint He ad If y ou fin d that the pri nted imag e is unex pected ly fain t or d ots in th e printed imag e are mis sing, you may be able to solve these pr oblems by clean ing the pr int head, w hich ensures that the noz zles ar e de liver ing in k p roperl y.
Note: If the V in k out light is flashing or on, you ca n no t clean the head, and this op eration will sta rt the ink cartridge rep lacement procedure. If you d o not wan t to replace an ink ca rtridge at this moment, press the T clea ning button to return the print h ead to its home po sition.

Diagnosin g the Problem If you fi nd so methin g wron g with your pr in ter, yo u may be ab le to solv e t h e pr oble m by : ❑ Chec king the “E rror indica tors” (see below) ❑ Perform ing a .
Printer operation check Per form ing a prin ter ope rati on chec k can he lp you det e rmine whether th e problem comes f rom th e printer or th e compu ter. To perform a printer operatio n ch eck, follo w these s teps: 1. M ake sure b oth the pr inter a nd compu ter ar e turned o ff.
4. Hold d own th e E load/eje ct button an d turn on the printer ; then relea se the button. The p rinter pr ints an operat ion ch eck pag e incl udin g the versi on of your pr in ter’s ROM, t he ink coun ter co de, and a nozzl e check patt ern.
5. Turn off the prin ter after it fin ishes p rinti ng one pag e. ❑ If the operati on check page r esults ap pear as shown in step 4 , this means that the printer itself is al l right an d that the problem probabl y lies in t he printer softwar e set t in gs , ap pl ic at ion s e tti ngs , the in te rf ac e ca ble , or t he com puter its elf.
Power supply The light s co me on b riefly bu t t hen g o o ff and st ay o ff. Cause What to d o The printer’s voltage rating doe s no t matc h t he v olta ge o f your electrical outlet. Check the printer and outlet voltage rat ings. I f th e vo lt ages do n ot m atch , unplug the pr inter immediately and contact your dealer.
Operation Th e P p ower lig ht is on but nothing prints. Cause What to do The interface ca ble is not plugged in securely. Confirm that the cable is securely fa ste ned t o th e p rin ter an d the computer. If the cable is connected co rr ec tly , pe rf o rm a p r int er o p e r at ion check as des cribed on page 6- 3.
The printer sounds like it is printing, but nothing prints. Cause What to d o The print hea d nozz les are clogged. C lean the pr int head . See page 5- 6. If thi s do es n o t w ork a f te r a f e w tr ia l s , contact your dealer. T he i nk ca rt rid g e i s o l d er th an six month s or beyo nd th e date on th e p acka ging .
Fo r Win d ows 95 , cho o se a l ow e r resolution setting as the Color Palette set ti n g . To ac c ess th e Col o r Pa l et te, click St a rt , poin t t o Settings , and ch oos e Con tro l P a nel . The n double-clic k the Di sp la y icon and click the Settings tab.
Printing sta rts too high or too low o n the page. Cause What to d o Margins are set incorrectly in your application. Check that the mar g ins are set correctl y in your pro gram. See “Prin table area” in the Appen d ix. The size of the paper load ed in th e p ri n ter do es n ot ma tc h the paper size settin g w ithin your application.
The New Hard ware Found screen appears ev en though the printer software has a lready been install ed. Cause What to do Thi s erro r may oc c u r in th e Wind ow s 95 operat ing sys tem . In th e Ne w H ard w are F o u n d sc ree n , click Do n ot install a driver [Wind ows wi ll not pro mpt y ou aga in] , then c lick OK .
Paper handling Paper do es not fee d pro perly from the sheet feede r. Cause What to d o The paper may have been loaded too deeply into the printer. Remove the paper and gent ly reinsert it straight up and down into the printer. Too man y sheet s ar e load ed in the sheet feeder.
The printer loads mor e than one sheet at a time . Cause What to do The paper may have been loaded too deeply into the printer . Remove the paper and gently r einsert it straight up and down into the printer . Too many sheets are loa ded in th e sheet feeder.
Paper do es not fully eject. Cause What to d o The paper is too long. Press the E load /ejec t button to eject the paper. Use paper that meets the paper requirements for t his printer. See “Pa per” in the Appendix. Paper fe ed or paper jam p roblems o ccur freq uently.
Printing quality The printed im age has gaps or faint ar eas. Cause What to do The paper th ickness lever or t he a dju st leve r po sit io n m ay not be s et c or rec tly. Make sure the pa per thickness lever and adj ust l e ver po si t ions ar e set correctly.
Pr inte d im age is sm e a r e d. Cause What to d o The paper thickness lever or the adj u st lever posi tio n ma y no t be s e t c orr e c tly . Make sure the paper th ickness lever and ad ju s t lever posit i on s ar e set correctly. See page 4-2 . Special paper was loaded without the s upport sheet or a regu lar s heet of pap er under it .
White ho ri zon ta l lines appe ar in th e pri nted i mag e. Cause What to do The print head n ozzles are clogged. Clea n the print head. See page 5-6 . The ink cartridge is low on ink. Ch e c k th e co ntro l pa ne l t o co nfi rm tha t th e V in k out light is flashing, and replace the ink cartridge.
Printing quality is not what you expect. Cause What to d o The paper loaded is not the paper selected in your application or the printer dr iver . Make sure you load the c orrect paper in the printer and th at you select the same media type in your applicat ion and/o r th e prin ter dr iver .
